Denzel Washington made an appearance on Good Morning America Tuesday, where he discussed his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest. He stars in the movie alongside A$AP Rocky, but he admits he didn’t “spend that much time with him” on set.

“I wanted to stay away from him,” Denzel says. “That’s kinda how I work. We meet when we meet.”

“But I’ve spent the last couple of days with him,” he notes. “Amazing young man. Intelligent. I was like, ‘Oh, OK. Rihanna. I see. This kid is something.’”

Fellow co-star Jeffrey Wright also praised Rocky during a Monday appearance on GMA, noting they’d previously worked together in the movie Monster.

“Rocky just killed it. He was dynamic. He’s got his whole vibe,” he says of Rocky’s performance in the 2023 film. “He was fantastic, and he brings that same energy and dynamism to this [film].”

He adds that Rocky and Denzel make “a wonderful pairing” and “go toe to toe” in the upcoming movie.

Directed by Spike Lee and inspired by Akira Kurosawa‘s High and LowHighest 2 Lowest follows the story of Rocky’s Yung Felon, an aspiring rapper who kidnaps the son of Denzel’s character, music mogul David King.

Rocky says he was “not at all” afraid of playing opposite Denzel: “It was actually fun. I was in awe. I was fanning out.”

“Being with these guys. They’re big hitters and very inspirational to me,” he added of working alongside Denzel and Jeffrey. “You know, it was crazy. It was a dream come true.”

Mastodon vocalist/drummer Brann Dailor has released a new song with his synth-driven side project, Arcadea.

The track is called “Lake of Rust” and will appear on the upcoming Arcadea album, Exodus of Gravity.

“This is where our hero is crossing this giant lake of lava with floating icebergs in it,” says band member Core Atoms of “Lake of Rust.” “They’re heading towards the galactic lighthouse where New Arcadea’s mysterious source of light originates. This is everything they see on their adventure.”

“In terms of human emotion, it’s power, anger and revenge,” Atoms continues. “It’s about getting there and saving the day no matter what.”

Exodus of Gravity is due out Aug. 22. It marks the sophomore Arcadea album, following 2017’s self-titled debut.

In other Mastodon-related news, the band’s former guitarist Brent Hinds has once again hit out against his Mastodon bandmates. Hinds, who parted ways with the “Blood and Thunder” metallers in March, took to the comments of an Instagram post featuring video of a 2012 Mastodon performance to write, “They kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am.”

“I’ve never met three people that were so full of themselves,” Hinds added. “It’s disgusting.”

In announcing Hinds’ departure, Mastodon said they’d “mutually decided to part ways.”

John Fogerty ‘really proud’ of Bruce Springsteen for calling out Donald Trump

John Fogerty is sticking up for Bruce Springsteen.

During an appearance on Rolling Stone’s Music Now podcast, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer expressed his support for Bruce calling out President Donald Trump during his concerts in Europe.

“I’m really proud of Bruce for just sticking up for his values [and] not being afraid to voice them,” Fogerty says.

Trump responded to Springsteen’s comments on Truth Social, calling him “Highly Overrated.”

Fogerty says that even though he thinks Trump is “very similar” to President Richard Nixon, Nixon would have known better than to call out Springsteen for what he said.

“President Nixon would’ve realized not to give the other side publicity by acknowledging and talking about it,” he tells the podcast. “Cause you just make it more famous when you do that.”

Fogerty is set to release his new album, Legacy: the Creedence Clearwater Revival years, on Aug. 22, featuring rerecorded versions of his CCR classics. While Fogerty had a rocky relationship with his bandmates following their acrimonious split in 1972, he still recognizes that what they had was something special.

“Those are the four people that made those records,” he says on the podcast, talking about his bandmates Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. “And that didn’t particularly happen again in history. So obviously those four human beings are unique human beings.”

He adds, “I still give a lot of credit to the way something like ‘Proud Mary’ feels or ‘Born on the Bayou.’ And there is mystery in that — there’s a mysterious aura or ingredient that I’m not gonna sit here and say was in my pocket.”

Carly Pearce had the chance to get back to her Kentucky roots during the first week of August.

The “truck on fire” hitmaker recapped her visit to Taylor Mill on Instagram, complete with a photo of her standing beneath the road sign that says “Hometown of Country Music Star Carly Pearce,” as well as one sitting onstage at her elementary school.

“I won my first talent show in the fourth grade on this stage!” she shared. “I got to go back to my hometown this week and reminisce on many moments from middle school and hug teachers that now are influencing the next generation in the same halls that I went to.”

“Last year my elementary school contacted me because they were in need of new curtains for their gymnasium, and I got to purchase them and see them for the first time,” she continued. “It was such a joy to go back and remember where all my dreams started.”

You won’t want to miss the final photo of what seems to be a young Carly in a blue cowboy hat and vest, presumably competing in the talent contest she mentioned.

On Thursday, Carly plays the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California, her last show before she co-hosts the ACM Honors with Russell Dickerson in Nashville Aug. 20.

Patti Smith has unveiled the cover of her next memoir, Bread of Angels.

The “People Have the Power” singer revealed the cover on Instagram, writing that it features a “graceful photograph” taken by artist Robert Mapplethorpe in 1979.

She adds that the photo was taken “in the same room where he shot the Horses cover,” referring to her 1975 debut album.

“This cover is a beautiful way to continue our lifelong collaboration,” she adds.

“Robert Mapplethorpe took this photograph at a deeply transitional moment. It was between the end of my public life as a performer and the beginning of my time in Detroit with my one true love, Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith,” she tells Vanity Fair. “Robert had taken an image with doves for the cover of the (1979) album Wave. Afterwards, I asked him to take another that would reflect the sentiment of the song ‘Dancing Barefoot,’ a love song for Fred and a farewell to the people. This is the photograph he took.”

Smith is set to release Bread of Angels on Nov. 4. It is available for preorder now.

Bread of Angels comes 15 years after the release of Smith’s first memoir, Just Kids, which documented her time in Manhattan in the ’70s and her relationship Mapplethorpe. It won the National Book Award in 2010.

According to the description, Bread of Angels is “the most intimate” of Smith’s memoirs, following the musician through her childhood in Philadelphia and South Jersey, her teenage years “when the first glimmers of art and romance take hold,” her marriage to Fred “Sonic” Smith and their family life, and more.
