Danielle Spencer, a former child actor best known for her role as Dee in the 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, has died, a publicist for her family confirmed to ABC News.
Spencer died Aug. 11, due to gastric cancer and cardiac arrest. She was 60, according to Sandra Jones, a family friend who is serving as the family’s spokesperson.
“This untimely death is really hard to process right now,” Jones told ABC News Tuesday. “She is a sweet and gentle soul and she is going to be missed very, very much.”
In 1977, Spencer survived a fatal car crash that killed her stepfather and manager, Tim Pelt, according to her biography on her website.
After recovering from her injuries, Spencer went on to earn a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine in 1993.
Spencer starred in 65 episodes of What’s Happening!!, an ABC sitcom about three teenage boys growing up in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts, according to IMDb.
Spencer played Dee Thomas, the boys’ younger sister. She also appeared in 16 episodes of the show’s sequel, What’s Happening Now!
She moved from California to the Richmond, Virginia, area in 2014.
At the time of her death, Spencer, who previously battled breast cancer, lived with her mom in an area outside of Richmond, according to Jones.
In addition to her mom, Cheryl Pelt, Spencer is survived by her younger brother, jazz musician Jeremy Pelt.
In an email Tuesday, Jeremy Pelt told ABC News that Spencer was “a very loving spirit who fought courageously until the very end.”
Jeremy Pelt also shared a tribute to his sister on Instagram Tuesday, writing, “Many of you knew her as ‘Dee,’ but she was more than a child actress.”
“She was a friend, an auntie to my three children who adored her, she was a daughter- and in many ways, my mother’s best friend, she was a veterinarian, she was someone who always remained positive even during her darkest days fighting this disease,” he continued. “And she was MY sister and protector.”
He added that he was “thankful” to be with his sister when she took her last breath and was “gutted” by her death, writing, “I love you, forever.”

Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, Demi Lovato, and Kevin Jonas perform onstage August 10, 2025 at MetLife Stadium (Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Live Nation)
For many fans, the highlight of the Jonas Brothers‘ tour kickoff Sunday in New Jersey was when the brothers’ old pal — and Joe Jonas‘ ex — Demi Lovato came out onstage to sing two Camp Rock classics: “This is Me” and “Wouldn’t Change a Thing.” But Demi says the moment meant a lot to her as well.
Appearing on the Chicks in the Office podcast, Demi said Joe asked her “last week” if she was free to perform that date and told her, “You’ve been, like, a huge part of our journey … this show is really important to us and we would love have you there.”
Demi said, “It was so healing for me, too. We’ve been through so much together, all of us, the Jonas Brothers and I. And it was really, really great to spend time with them. It was really cool. They came to my room, all three of them, and, like, spent time getting to know my husband … which was really meaningful to me.”
“They just, you know, thanked me profusely for flying across the country to perform with them, and it was just so thoughtful,” she added. “I felt so appreciated. And it was really healing for us and I loved it, you know, every second of it was so great.”
She admitted to being very nervous during the performance, having not performed those two songs in at least 10 years. However, she said the fans’ reaction “filled my soul with warmth and love. It was incredible.”
Demi, who just dropped a new single, “Fast,” noted that the performance was part of her recent embrace of the nostalgia of her past, including her “internet viral moments.” She noted, “This era for me is — I’m not taking myself too seriously.”

In what’s perhaps the clearest indication that Billy Joel will be spending most of his time in Florida in the future, his motorcycle shop in Oyster Bay, Long Island, is closing down.
Newsdayreports that 20th Century Cycles, which opened in 2010 and housed the Piano Man’s collection of more than 75 vintage motorcycles, will not be renewing its lease when it expires at the end of September. Billy will be auctioning the bike collection later in 2025, his publicist tells Newsday, due to his “recent medical issue.”
The store remains open on Saturdays and Sundays in August, and is currently selling off its collection of motorcycle parts. All the actual bikes, which were always free for the public to view, have been removed from the location.
When he first opened 20th Century Cycles, Billy told Newsday that he wanted to create a “focus point” for people “aimlessly riding around on weekends.” In 2023, part of the street where the shop is located was renamed Billy Joel Way.
Billy also has his nearby Long Island mansion on the market for just under $30 million, but told fans at his concert on Dec. 31, 2023, that he’s keeping his other home in the upscale village of Sag Harbor, Long Island. He added, “I’m just gonna spend a little more time in Florida, like old Jewish guys from Long Island do.”
In other Billy Joel news, his daughter Della Rose Joel turns 10 on Tuesday. A note on Instagram reads, “We are so proud of your sweet nature, empathy for others and endless love. You see everything through caring eyes. We could not ask for anything more. We all love you beyond measure. How did we get to 10 years already?”

Stone Temple Pilots drummer Eric Kretz has dropped out of touring with The Joe Perry Project.
The Aerosmith guitarist shares in an Instagram post that Kretz is dealing with a family emergency and thus is “unable to participate in the upcoming Joe Perry Project tour dates.”
“Eric looks forward to rejoining the tour as soon as he is able,” Perry adds.
The Joe Perry Project tour begins Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, and wraps Aug. 23 in Port Chester, New York. The group’s live lineup also includes STP bassist Robert DeLeo, The Black Crowes vocalist Chris Robinson and Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford.
Stone Temple Pilots have a run of tour dates scheduled beginning Aug. 29.
You can check out his reaction on Instagram, where a video captured the moment he found out prior to playing Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena with Jason Aldean on Aug. 7.
“In case you guys didn’t know the impact of what sharing a song can make on an artist and his career… yall are changing not only my life but everyone around me,” he writes in the post, which shows him bursting into tears at the news.
“Sorry for the waterworks but I couldn’t control it. I’m too overwhelmed with thankfulness and relief,” he adds.
“Fix What You Didn’t Break” follows his previous chart-toppers “Whiskey on You,” “World on Fire” and “Bulletproof.”
Nate continues on tour with Jason through the fall.
He’s also currently on the cover of People Health‘s summer issue, where he talks about his recent 55-pound weight loss.
