Metallica unveils “Rough Mix” & covers of “The Unforgiven” from upcoming ‘Black Album’ reissue & tribute record

Blackened Recordings

Metallica is spotlighting “The Unforgiven” this week as the celebration of The Black Album‘s upcoming 30th anniversary continues.

The metal legends have unearthed a “Rough Mix” of the Western-themed power ballad, which was released as the second single from The Black Album. The recording is one of many bonus tracks included on the upcoming 30th anniversary Black Album reissue, due out September 10.

Additionally, Metallica has released three covers of “The Unforgiven,” recorded by the artists Ha*Ash, Diet Cig, and Vishal Dadlani, DIVINE and Shor Police. Those will all appear on The Metallica Blacklist, a 53-track tribute to The Black Album, which will also arrive September 10.

In previous weeks, Metallica has focused on the Black Album tracks “Sad but True” and “Holier than Thou.” They’ve also shared an all-star cover of “Nothing Else Matters” featuring Miley Cyrus, Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Elton John, guitarist/producer Andrew Watt and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The broadcast will be filmed across six continents, with a goal of uniting the world in order to defeat poverty and defend the planet.  It’ll air on ABC, ABC News Live, FX, Hulu, YouTube, Twitter and more.  The musical performances will take place at “iconic locations” in New York, Paris, London, Seoul, Los Angeles, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro.

Other artists on the bill include Adam Lambert, Alessia Cara, Andrea Bocelli, Billie Eilish, BTS, Coldplay, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, Keith Urban, Lorde, Metallica, Ricky Martin, Usher and The Weeknd.

The broadcast is part of Global Citizen’s Recovery Plan for the World in the wake of the pandemic. It calls on governments, the private sector and philanthropists to donate one billion COVID-19 vaccine, contribute $6 billion to famine relief efforts, donate $400 million to education, give $250 million to support COVID-19 response efforts for marginalized communities, and get the world’s biggest companies to commit to reaching net zero emissions to fight climate change.

“COVID-19 has drastically reversed the progress toward achieving the United Nations’ Global Goals, pushing upwards of 160 million people back into extreme poverty,” said Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans. “There are now more than 40 million people on the brink of famine. Progress on climate change has halted, as the majority of the Fortune 500 fail to set science-based carbon reduction targets. We must rectify the damage done and hold world leaders and businesses accountable for ensuring that the entire world recovers from this pandemic together.”

Listen to Thom Yorke’s “Very 2021” remix of Radiohead’s “Creep”

Credit: Jun Takahashi

Thom Yorke is giving Radiohead‘s “Creep” a makeover for the times.

The newly released, nine-minute “Very 2021” remix of the alt-rock staple slows the tempo considerably, while also adding electronic elements and vocal effects to make the song even more, well, creepy. You can download it now via digital outlets.

Yorke had recorded the “Very 2021” remix of “Creep” earlier this year for designer Jun Takahashi‘s new clothing collection. Takahashi also created the artwork for the remix’s cover.

The original “Creep,” of course, was the breakout single off Radiohead’s 1993 debut album, Pablo Honey.

Dierks Bentley’s Seven Peaks Festival 2021 is cancelled due to local capacity restrictions

ABC/Chris Hollo

Just weeks after announcing the lineup for his 2021 Seven Peaks Festival, Dierks Bentley has had to cancel this year’s event. The change comes as a result of capacity restrictions from local health officials in Chaffee County, where the Buena Vista, Colorado festival was scheduled to take place.

“I am so sorry to announce that we are going to have to cancel 7P for this year. I really could not be more bummed about it,” explained Dierks on social media.

“It cannot be overstated how much time, thought, effort and energy has gone into gearing up for the festival this year,” Dierks continued, going on to thank his team members, the artists who signed on to play the event and the fans who bought tickets. “Together we built something really special and it’s going to be a big celebration when our 7P family is together again. We will be back!”

2021 passes that have been purchased will be automatically refunded within 30 days. Also, a post from the festival indicates that a new location for 2022 will be announced in the months ahead.

Per a tweet from Denver-based reporter Marshall Zelinger, 6,000 tickets to Seven Peaks Festival were sold before the event obtained its permit from Chaffee County. Local guidelines from the county currently cap outdoor events at 5,000 people due to COVID-19 protocol.

Keith Urban had previously been announced as a headliner for Seven Peaks, on a bill also including acts such as Kip Moore, Travis Denning and Ingrid Andress.

Beach vacation? Selena Gomez has you covered

Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Global Citizen VAX LIVE

Selena Gomez is a lot of things — an actress, singer, beauty mogul — and now she can add designer to the list with the launch of her swimwear collection with La’Mariette.

The 28-year-old “Lose You To Love” singer recently dropped a six-style swimsuit collection with the brand after being approached by its founders, Theresa Mingus and Morgan Brutocao, OK! Magazine reports.

Speaking about the design process, Selena explained, “I wanted to stay away from colors I’m used to, like red and white,” before sharing that she landed on purple.

“Purple felt different for me,” she said. “And we added pops of color like green and neons here and there; it really becomes your own suit, however you wear it.”

The tie-dye print they came up with, called “Aura,” is featured on all six pieces of Selena’s collection, which includes a cross-back one-piece, a wrap halter top, a bralette top, a sarong and two different bottoms.

“The Aura print is inspired by Selena, her aura shines through in everything she does and we want everyone else to feel that sort of transformative feeling of being their most authentic self,” said Brutocao. “Selena’s confidence is unmatched and being able to design a print with her which embodies that is so rewarding.”

The collection is available exclusively on la-mariette.com. Prices range from $49 to $119.

Gloria Estefan, Camila Cabello and other Cuban artists react to country’s crisis

Celebrities with ties to Cuba, such as Gloria Estefan and Camila Cabello, are raising awareness about the ongoing crisis impacting the country.

Thousands of Cubans are actively protesting the government over rising prices and shortages of food and medicine amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as blackouts plaguing the island.  The turnout is among the largest anti-government demonstrations in Cuba’s recent history. Amid the already growing tensions, Cuba’s government denounced the protests and deployed armed forces, further provoking an already volatile situation.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Cabello informed her millions of followers about what’s happening in Cuba and pleaded for their assistance.

“Hey guys, there is a major crisis right now in Cuba and we need your help to spread awareness. Deaths from COVID are rising rapidly and because of the lack of medicine, resources, basic necessities and even, food many people are dying,” she explained, urging her fans to use the #SOSCuba hashtag on social media.

In a follow up, the “Havana” singer continued, “There are simultaneous protests in more than 5 cities in Cuba. Our brave people took the streets to protest for this humanitarian crisis & they need our help.”

Gloria Estefan also rallied her followers on Sunday by sharing footage of a recent protest taking place in the country.

“The Cuban people are reaching their breaking point! I stand with them as I always have!,” she wrote, while also sharing the message in Spanish.  In other social media posts, she called for the country’s freedom.

Other celebrities rallying for the country include J Balvin and Becky G

Cuba is going through its worst economic crisis in decades.  In tandem with the economic crisis, the country is grappling with a new and deadly surge of COVID-19.

Deborah Cox says her new music is about “spontaneity and living in the moment”

Ivan Guajardo

Veteran R&B singer Deborah Cox turns 47 today. The Canadian vocalist, who previously sang backup for Celine Dion, says the new music she’s making reflects her spontaneous attitude toward life.

“It’s really just about the spontaneity and living in the moment. I’m very much that kind of person that’s very grounded and very present,” Cox tells ABC Audio. “So a lot of the projects that I choose to do are birthed out of the moment that I’m in.”

Cox’s next moment involves preparing her seventh album, which will feature production assistance from Rico Love and D-Town.

“We were in the studio coming up with ideas for this next project, the seventh album, and that’s literally what I was working on at the time,” Cox explains, noting that the pandemic impacted her motivation to create more R&B classics.

“But the idea is really to accentuate and get back to my soul roots, the genre of music that got me to do ‘Sentimental‘ and ‘Where Do We Go from Here,’ ‘Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here‘ and ‘We Can’t Be Friends,'” she says. “It’s really to just continue that path.”

Cox admits that she’s “still in the process” of mixing, mastering and recording vocals for the album, reflecting on her new perspective on life.

“y life has changed dramatically [because of the pandemic]. I’m not able to really connect with people and do live shows and do all the things that were my life before,” she explains. “I’m going to have to be able to express that in this album. So, yeah, we’re not done. We’re just taking a bit of a pause until we can figure out how and when we can get back to finishing up some more.”
