‘Pinocchio’s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth dishes on recreating the beloved puppet

Courtesy of Disney+

There’s a new Pinocchio in town. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays the puppet who becomes a boy in the new Disney+ movie, streaming now.

Ainsworth didn’t want to give too much of the film away, but told ABC Audio some of what’s new this time around, like “new characters…new songs [and] new bits here and there that are really exciting…so you’ve got to tune in to Disney+ to see it.”

What Benjamin didn’t tinker too much with was the voice Dickie Jones created in the 1940 animated Disney film, explaining, “That original is in so many hearts today and that voice is so like iconic, that I think it would be a shame to let it go.” He did, however, “put a little bit of my own energy in there to make it my own, too.”

Pinocchio also stars Tom Hanks as Gepetto, and the 13-year-old British actor says it was awesome working with “such a legend.”

“… One of the first days on set, he came around and said, ‘Hey, Ben, you want to run lines?’ I was like, oh, my gosh, Tom Hanks wants to run lines with me,” he recalls. “So it was one of those moments where it’s just kind of like, Oh, okay, yeah, cool face, yeah, let’s run some lines. And he gave me the nickname Benocchio, and it was his idea to get me this Pinocchio hat to wear on set. And it’s really fun. Really fun moments with him on set.”

“We need a ship,” Riker responds.

“I can’t ask you to put yourself in danger,” Picard tells his former first officer. “Since when?” Riker laughs.

Olivia Wilde addresses Shia LaBeouf controversy, rumors she dumped Jason Sudeikis for Harry Styles

ABC — Gabe Ginsberg/WireImage

(Note Language) The amount of drama surrounding Olivia Wilde‘s Don’t Worry Darling doesn’t seem to be abating, with weeks to go until its September 23 theatrical bow.

In a Vanity Fair cover story, Wilde again insisted she fired Shia LaBeouf from the film, in a role that eventually went to Harry Styles.

As reported, LaBeouf provided Variety with texts and video messages between him and the director, showing she was apparently eager to continue with him in the part, despite rumored tensions with co-star Florence Pugh.

Wilde insisted to VF the messages were “released out of context.”

“All I’ll say is he was replaced, and there was no going forward with him,” Wilde said.

Further, Wilde addressed reported tensions that story brought about with Pugh, whose apparent concerns about LaBeouf were seemingly dismissed in the communications with Shia. In one message, Wilde told the actor, “I think this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo.”

Some pointed to the fact that Pugh has skipped press events discussing the movie as proof there’s bad blood between her and Wilde.

“Florence did the job I hired her to do, and she did it exquisitely,” Wilde offered, explaining Pugh’s absence was due to her shooting the Dune sequel.

Wilde described the swirling attention and reported tension with the lead actress “ironic,” noting the movie explores “how easy it is to strip a woman of power by using other women to judge and shame them.”

Wilde also called rumors she split with Ted Lasso Emmy winner Jason Sudeikis to get with Styles “complete horse****.”

“Our relationship was over long before I met Harry,” Olivia insisted in part. “Like any relationship that ends, it doesn’t end overnight.”

The pair co-parent their children, Otis, 8, and Daisy, 6.

‘The Good Fight’ says goodbye after six seasons

Paramount+/Elizabeth Fisher

It’s the beginning of the end for The Good Fight. The Paramount+ legal drama debuts its final season today.

Christine Baranski has been in this universe for over a decade — first with The Good Wife, and then in all six seasons of The Good Fight, playing the fierce and talented lawyer Diane Lockhart.

Baranski says her time on The Good Fight — which consistently satirized American politics, starting with Donald Trump‘s presidential win — was amazing, explaining to ABC Audio, “What we did was something very original and sometimes outrageous and then sometimes so nuanced…I think it will go down as the best show of our times in terms of reflecting what was going on in these crazy six years.”

The show’s co-creator, Robert King, agrees, noting that he and his wife, Michelle, poured all of their feelings about politics into the show, and with the show ending there will be a void in his life.

“It is going to be very frustrating to not be able, because your instinct, when you see something that outrages you, or ‘Oh my God, that is the stupidest thing, let’s satirize it,'” he says. “Your first instinct is write it. Now we’ll be like, okay, let’s tell our daughter, let’s get her on the phone. We’ll do a little one-act for her of this.”

Michelle seconds that, sharing, “We will react. We just won’t have a TV show to react with.”

As for what can we expect from The Good Fight‘s final season, Robert says, “I think our sense was always that this was going to end with some kind of explosion, because our main title is about explosions…So to honor that does not mean everybody lives on a farm somewhere and starts growing alfalfa.”

‘Barbarian’ director Zach Cregger calls stand-out reviews “a dream”

20th Century Studios and New Regency

Zach Cregger, veteran of The Whitest Kids You Know, stepped behind the camera for the first time as the writer and director for the new horror film Barbarian, and he tells ABC Audio the response to the nightmare-inducing film has been “a dream.”

In the movie, which debuts in theaters Friday, Georgina Campbell plays a young woman who finds her rental home has been doubled booked — and the red flags keep piling up from there.

Bill Skarsgård, who played Pennywise the Clown in the It movies, and Justin Long also star.

The movie is already being hailed as a “horror classic” and “brilliant” by critics, scoring a 94% from the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Moviegoers who caught a sneak peek two weeks ago were similarly blown away but vowed online not to spoil the film.

“It’s a dream,” Cregger enthuses. “I mean, it has been universally positive. People are talking about the movie in the way that I maybe in my heart of hearts hoped that they would. And I’m just I’m so excited for the world to be able to watch it.”

Cregger directed the movie but left the creepy coming attraction to the folks at 20th Century Studios, which was for the best, he jokes: “The trailer I would have cut together would not have been as good.”

The filmmaker teases, “It doesn’t spoil the movie. A lot of people think it does.”

“I can promise you it does not … you just can’t predict it from the trailer, I promise!” Cregger vows.

He also adds, “This is the perfect movie for a theater. It’s a roller-coaster ride. And you don’t want to watch a roller-coaster ride on your phone. You want to go to the theme park, and you want to get on the ride, you know?”

Queen Elizabeth II, a life onscreen

Olivia Colman in “The Crown”/Netflix

In a brief announcement on the Royal Family’s official Twitter, it was confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II has died at age 96.

The longest-reigning monarch in British history, “died peacefully” Thursday at her summer home, Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

In her 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II had a ringside seat to history, and as such, has been portrayed on the big and small screen many times during her reign.

In fact, since taking the throne at age 27, the monarch had been immortalized onscreen countless times, according to IMDB, and has appeared as herself in more than 270 productions.

Queen Elizabeth II was portrayed by performers in projects ranging from serious based-on-real life dramas like the Oscar-winning 2010 film The King’s Speech, and 2006’s The Queen, but she’s also been played for laughs, with appearances in 1988’s The Naked Gun and 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Freya Wilson played a fiery young queen-to-be in The King’s Speech.

Helen Mirren won an Oscar for playing the monarch in The Queen.

In the two comedies, the queen was portrayed by lookalike Jeannette Charles.

That said, the queen, herself, had shown a sense of humor over her reign, like when she took part in a skit at the open of the 2012 Olympics in London, alongside Daniel Craig in character as 007. A stand-in for the queen parachuted out of a helicopter along with the super spy to kick off the games.

Elizabeth II was also portrayed in her teen years in 2015’s A Royal Night Out. That film dramatized a legendary true story of the queen-to-be, who had been a truck mechanic and driver for a women’s branch of the British Army during WWII, secretly partying amongst the commoners on VE Day. Sarah Gadon played the celebrating royal in that production.

Most recently, Netflix’s Emmy-winning royal family drama The Crown has seen Elizabeth taking the spotlight, portrayed respectively by actresses Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.
