(NEW YORK) — From Snoopy and Power Rangers to Hot Wheels and Pokemon, McDonald’s has long provided a jolt of joy with its kid-friendly toys inside the iconic Happy Meal. Now, the Golden Arches is making an earth-friendly move toward using sustainable materials in an effort to reduce plastic.

In the midst of Climate Week 2021, McDonald’s announced its goal that by the end of 2025, every toy in every Happy Meal sold around the world will be more sustainable and reduce conventional plastic by 90%, thus lowering demand on fossil fuel plastic production.

“Our next generation of customers care deeply about protecting the planet and what we can do to help make our business more sustainable,” Jenny McColloch, McDonald’s chief sustainability officer said in a statement. “With this transition for our toys, we’re working closely with suppliers, families and play experts and engineers to introduce more sustainable, innovative designs and help drive demand for recycled materials, to keep McDonald’s communities and beyond smiling for generations to come.”

McDonald’s said some of its toys such as “fan-favorite movie characters that used to be plastic figurines may reappear as 3D figures that can be built and decorated.” Other products such as mini board games with virgin fossil fuel-based plastic game pieces “may be swapped out in favor of accessories made from certified plant-derived or recycled materials.”

The transition to making toys with more renewable, recycled or certified materials will result in an approximately 90% reduction in virgin fossil fuel-based plastic use, which is nearly equal to the population of Washington, D.C., eliminating plastics from their lives for a year.

The fast food chain’s Happy Meal toy innovation efforts have been in motion since 2018 in other global markets including the U.K., Ireland and France, which McDonald’s said has reduced virgin fossil fuel-based plastic by 30%.

“Sustainable material sourcing is a necessary strategy for mitigating the impact of supply chains on our ecosystems and climate, including the plastic waste crisis,” said Sheila Bonini, the senior vice president of private sector engagement at World Wildlife Fund.

The lower demand for fossil fuel plastic will “instead create new markets for responsibly sourced renewable and recycled content,” Bonini said. “McDonald’s can engage its millions of daily customers around the world in the transition to a more sustainable, circular future.”

The company will continue to work with other industry partners to innovate renewable materials that meet both play and safety standards and can help remove the remaining conventional plastics within the toy portfolio.

McDonald’s was the first global restaurant company to set a science-based target to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Today, McDonald’s said it is on track to meet its 2030 targets, achieving an 8.5% reduction in the absolute emissions of restaurants and offices and a nearly 6% reduction in supply chain emissions intensity, compared to 2015.

The California-founded fast food restaurant also noted in Tuesday’s press release that “by the end of 2020, McDonald’s was approximately 80% of the way to its goal to source all guest packaging from renewable, recyclable or certified sources by 2025.”

McDonald’s credited the achievements this year to cross-industry collaboration from suppliers, producers and franchisees as well as investments in renewable energy and its 2020 Responsible Sourcing Goals across beef, soy, coffee, fish, palm oil, packaging fiber and forests.

(NEW YORK) — President Joe Biden found videos of tactics used by Border Patrol agents on horseback against Haitian migrants at the Texas border “horrific and horrible,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

“I don’t know anyone who could watch that video and not have that emotion,” Psaki said on “CBS Mornings.”

The videos from outlets including Reuters and Al Jazeera appear to show a mounted Border Patrol agent snap his horse’s reins in the direction of a migrant who then stumbles back into the Rio Grande near Del Rio, Texas.

Academy Award-winning Fargo co-writer-director Joel Coen has raised the curtain on his upcoming take on Shakespeare‘s The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Featuring multiple Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, Coen’s wife and frequent collaborator, the teaser is brief, but creepy and stark. Shot in black and white, it shows Washington as the title character and McDormand as his Machiavellian wife, who eyes Scotland’s throne for her husband.

The teaser features no dialog from the acclaimed actors, only The Witch’s haunting line, “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”

The project is a return to The Bard for Denzel, who has performed Shakespeare both on stage and on the big screen, the latter in Kenneth Branagh‘s 1993 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing.

Also starring Brendon Gleeson and The Queen’s Gambit co-star Moses IngramThe Tragedy of Macbeth — Coen’s first movie without his filmmaking partner and brother, Joel — hits theaters December 25, and Apple TV+ on January 14.

Carlos Santana has teamed up with Steve Winwood for the third single from the legendary guitarist’s upcoming album, Blessings and Miracles: a cover of Procol Harum‘s 1967 classic “A Whiter Shade of Pale.”

The idea for the two to record the song together came from Santana, who suggested it to Winwood when they were both performing in London’s Hyde Park. “I said, ‘You and I have to do it, but we’re going to do it very sexy, like a Hare Krishna but with congas,’” Santana recalls. “I played the components in his ear, and he said, ‘I hear it, Carlos. You’re right.’”

“So that’s what we did — it’s Santana, Cuban, Puerto Rican in an African way. And man, you talk about sexy,” adds Carlos. “Steve’s voice is so sexy and beautiful.”

Winwood adds, “Carlos has been doing what I’ve been trying to do for the last fifty years, namely combining elements of rock, jazz, folk, and Latin Afro-Caribbean music.”

“Carlos’ genius comes in large part from a wonderful combination of rock music with Latin-Cuban rhythms,” Winwood adds. “I’ve played with Carlos on numerous occasions over the past fifty years and I’m very excited to be working with him again still.”

Blessings and Miracles will be released October 15.  Santana has also released the Rob Thomas collaboration “Move” and the Diane Warren/G-Eazy collaboration “She’s Fire” from the album.

‘Dear White People’: Justin Simien explains the purpose of ’90s music & why the series will never be “over”

Justin Simien had a lot to unpack for the final season of his critically-acclaimed Netflix series, Dear White People

Unlike previous seasons, where the creator went in focused on topical issues centered on race and culture, Simien says he “started the season from a heart place.”

“I went in going like, ‘What am I feeling right now?’ And ‘How do I turn that into something that is honest but also exciting enough that warrants a final season?'” Simien tells ABC Audio. “And that’s where I landed first.”

Simien notes that once he “mentally… caught up” to what his feelings showed him, he noticed that there was a strong tie-in for music.

“I realized that there was this really interesting echo between the ’90s and the sort of Black renaissance that you really feel in the music of the ’90s,” he says.

Unfortunately, not every nostalgic ballad was able to make the cut. Writer Jaclyn Moore jokes that for every “great” ’90s song they considered, they were reminded that you had to pay for it.

“We love Lauryn Hill. We had some [of her] numbers — but that’s expensive,” Moore laughs.

Aside from the musically themed season, Justin says the fourth season leaves plenty of room for continuation since racism doesn’t officially have an end date.

“The reckoning has not completed itself,” he shares. “So that was always the tricky part. It’s like, how do we tell the truth about this experience and also tell a satisfying story, but at the same time not bum everybody out?”

He continues, “And I think by nature, Dear White People always has to feel a little incomplete…We are so far from the mountaintop… that there’s no other way to ‘end it.'”

The final season of Dear White People launches on Netflix September 22.

Ewan McGregor was all smiles backstage at the Emmy Awards Sunday night, and he had a reason to: he had just picked up his first TV trophy, for portraying mercurial designer Halston in the Netflix limited series of the same name.

He also gave fans a quick update about his next anticipated project, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that will debut on Disney+ next year.  But as usual, McGregor was careful about spoilers.

“Not really,” the Scot said when asked if he could give any details.

However, his lack of facial hair, unlike the titular Jedi master’s, was one giveaway that he confirmed by explaining that shooting on the series has wrapped.

“It was really, really good fun,” McGregor said. “I really enjoyed working with [director] Deborah Chow,” who won acclaim for directing two episodes of The Mandalorian

“I think it will not disappoint,” McGregor explained. “I think it’s going to be good. I had a really good time making it and worked with some really wonderful people, lovely people.”

Some of those “lovely people” include Eternals‘ Kumail NanjianiO’Shea Jackson Jr., and Ewan’s Star Wars prequel co-stars including Joel EdgertonBonnie Piesse and Hayden Christensen. The first two performers reprise, respectively, Luke Skywalker’s adoptive Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. The latter, of course, will once again play Darth Vader, Kenobi’s fallen apprentice who was once Anakin Skywalker.

The series takes place after the events of Star Wars: Episode III- – Revenge of the Sith but before Star Wars: A New Hope, at a time when Kenobi watches over a young Skywalker from afar on Tatooine.

Sarah Dash, who co-founded “Lady Marmalade” group Labelle, died on Monday, Billboard reports. She was 76.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Labelle co-founder Patti LaBelle said that she and Dash were “just onstage together on Saturday,” adding, “It was such a powerful and special moment.”

“Sarah Dash was an awesomely talented, beautiful and loving soul who blessed my life and the lives of so many others in more ways than I can say. I could always count on her to have my back,” Patti continued. “That’s who Sarah was…a loyal friend and a voice for those who didn’t have one. She was a true giver, always serving and sharing her talent and time.”

“I am heartbroken, as I know all of her loved ones and fans are,” she added. “But I know that Sarah’s spirit and all that she has given to the world live on. And I pray that her precious memory brings us peace and comfort. Rest in power my dear sister. I love you always!”

LaBelle also posted footage of her and Dash onstage on Saturday, as well as a montage of photos of Dash and the group over  the years.

In the ’60s, Dash teamed up with Nona Hendryx and Patti LaBelle in Philadelphia to form a group called The Ordettes. After Cindy Birdsong joined, they renamed themselves The Bluebelles, and then Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. In 1971, a few years after Birdsong left to join The Supremes, they reimagined themselves as the trio Labelle, with a funkier and futuristic visual style and more politically and socially conscious songs.

In 1974, Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade” — with its unforgettable chorus of “Voulez-vous couchez avec moi” — hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s parent album Nightbirds, was a top-10 hit and made them the first Black vocal group to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone. After two more albums, Labelle split and all three launched solo careers; in 2008, they reunited for an album and tour.

In addition to releasing a number of solo albums and singles, Dash wrote her autobiography, Dash of Diva, performed sporadically, and sang with the Rolling Stones, as well as with Stones guitarist Keith Richards on his solo album and tour.

No cause of death was provided.

Britney Spears makes triumphant return to Instagram, but some fans think someone else is running the account

Britney Spears makes triumphant return to Instagram, but some fans think someone else is running the account

After suddenly going dark on Instagram last week, Britney Spears made her triumphant return to the social media service on Monday.

The “Toxic” singer admitted that she found it hard to “stay away” from the app, but revealed that she temporarily deactivated her Instagram in order to enjoy a small getaway with Sam Asghari, her soon-to-be husband.

Spears, 39, also let it slip that she’s still having a tough time wrapping her mind around the fact that she’s engaged.

“Some shots from my weekend getaway to celebrate my engagement with my … holy s*** … FIANCÉ,” she captioned the post. “I still can’t believe it !!!!”

The Grammy winner continued, “I couldn’t stay away from the gram too long so I’m back already.”

Despite her celebratory return, some fans aren’t exactly buying the story and believe that someone else reactivated the account. Fans have begun pointing out that the photos and videos that have been uploaded since Monday don’t show Britney wearing her sparkler, nor the dark cherry-red highlights she had in her hair during last week’s engagement reveal

In a later video update, Spears explained in the caption that the “red dye came out in the shower and it looked like a crime scene.”

The admission only fueled fans’ concerns that Britney may no longer in control of her Instagram, with some hairstylists offering their expertise with red hair dye.

“Uh red hair dye doesn’t rinse out in a few days… cosmetologist/barber here,” one user remarked, while others shared similar insights.

Neither Britney nor Asghari have addressed the speculation.
