(NEW YORK) — As the COVID-19 pandemic has swept the globe, more than 5 million people have died from the disease worldwide, including over 763,000 Americans, according to real-time data compiled by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

Just 68.8% of Americans ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Consider rapid testing before Thanksgiving, experts say

Former Baltimore health commissioner Dr. Leana Wen said in an interview Monday hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center that her family is rapid-testing on Thanksgiving because they’re gathering indoors with multiple families and have young, unvaccinated children.

She said it was reasonable for families with immunocompromised members to continue to take precautions, like rapid test and gather outdoors.

“A family in which everybody is generally healthy and fully vaccinated might take very different types of risks than a family with unvaccinated young kids or elderly, immunocompromised family members,” she said.

Dr. Jerome Adams, former Surgeon General under President Donald Trump, said to make sure all relatives are vaccinated and that no one has cold symptoms.

“Even if you’re vaccinated, if you’re coughing, if you’re sneezing, if you’ve got symptoms, you still could be spreading the virus,” he said.

Looking to the future, Dr. Anthony Fauci said, “If we can get most of the people who are eligible to be boosted, boostered, we can go a long way to make in 2022 much more of a normal year than what we’ve seen in 2021.”

Long-term study of kids with COVID begins

The National Institutes of Health is starting a study to track the impact of COVID-19 infections in children, enrolling its first participant at the NIH’s Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The idea of “long COVID,” or long-term health impacts, is of concern in children, and is one of the reasons doctors strongly encourage pediatric vaccination. Six million children in the U.S. have had COVID-19, and many “experienced significant acute and long-term effects,” the NIH said.

The study will track up to 1,000 children and young adults between 3 and 21 years old who previously tested positive for COVID-19 and evaluate the impact on their physical and mental health over three years.

The study will also try to determine risk factors for complications. It will evaluate the long-term immune responses to the disease, screen for genetic factors that may affect how children respond to COVID-19 infection and determine whether immunological factors influence long-term outcomes.

Fauci says fully vaccinated families should ‘feel good’ about gathering for holidays

Dr. Anthony Fauci said vaccinated family members “can feel good about enjoying a typical Thanksgiving, Christmas,” in an interview Monday hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center.

But Fauci warned that cases are still high, so people should wear masks when they’re in groups of people in indoor settings.

“We are not going to be going through this indefinitely,” Fauci said. “How quickly we get to the end depends on us: how well we vaccinate, how well we get boosted and how well we do the kinds of things to protect ourselves.”

Andy Grammer explains why the recipe for success is “putting yourself out there and having no one care”

Andy Grammer explains why the recipe for success is “putting yourself out there and having no one care”
Alex Harper

A decade ago, Andy Grammer first caught lightning a bottle with his eponymous debut album, which featured the hit singles “Keep Your Head Up” and “Fine by Me.”  A few years later, three million copies of his 2014 feel-good anthem “Honey I’m Good” flew off the shelves.

Grammer has released several top-charting singles since, including 2016’s “Fresh Eyes” and 2019’s “Don’t Give Up on Me,” and he credits his success to the lessons he learned busking on the streets of Santa Monica, California.

Talking to the Sprout podcast recently, the 37-year-old opened up about the impact those formative years had on his career.

“The whole game is can you get over putting yourself out there and having no one care,” posed Grammer, stressing that success comes after one masters the art of “putting yourself out there, failing, and getting back up.”

While Grammer no longer has to sing for his supper, he isn’t opposed to the idea of busking on the city streets and going completely unrecognized.  In fact, he has a playlist ready to go, starting with “85,” a song he released in 2017.

He said he also would play “Don’t Give Up on Me,” because it “seems to have this effect where it makes people not want to give up on themselves, and I really love that.”

Lastly, he’d play “Damn It Feels Good to Be Me,” since it goes back to his earlier point about self reliance.

“Life gets better when you are genuinely able to stop caring how you’re perceived. We waste so much time worrying about how others are perceiving us,” Grammer remarked, noting that once he accepted his own “quirks and my uniqueness,” it took him “down a very certain path that is probably made for me.”

New History Channel series offers ‘Star Trek’ fans a ‘Center Seat’ to the phenomenon

The History Channel recently unveiled its new documentary series The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek, which airs Friday nights and can also be streamed any time on demand.

Directed by Brian Volk-Weiss, the series takes a deep dive into the iconic universe of Star Trek, which, the documentary explains, began thanks to another icon, Lucille Ball

Ball’s Desilu Productions produced the sci-fi series, and she also created the concept of a network “put pilot,” which helped launch Star Trek.

Normally, there’s “like a one-in-20 chance the pilot gets shot,” explains Volk-Weiss. “So Lucy invented the put pilot, where they were guaranteed two pilots. Her two picks? Star Trek [and] Mission: Impossible. So two for two, she picked things that are still in production 50, 60 years later. It’s crazy.”

Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, narrates and also produces the series, which features interviews with Trek stars and behind-the-scenes talent.

“I already knew Gates because we produce her podcast,” Volk-Weiss explains. “So when I called her up, I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re doing this Ken Burns deep dive…’ She’s like, ‘I’m in, I love it!’ And then her agent calls me and her agent’s like, ‘Brian, how did you get Ken Burns to direct your Star Trek documentary?’

Brian laughs, “I was like, ‘Miscommunication!'”

Still, he allows, “That’s what we tried to do. Like what Ken Burns did for Gettysburg, that’s what we tried to do for Star Trek.”

For the record, the producer of Movies That Made Us and The Toys That Made Us has been a lifelong Star Trek fan. “[E]verything we’ve done was kind of training us for this,” Volk-Weiss says. “I wish there was…a word more powerful than surreal. I mean, beyond surreal.”

Chris Janson is “Halfway to Crazy” on his upcoming 2022 tour.

The “Buy Me a Boat” singer has locked in three months of headlining that sees him performing in theaters around the country, including a stop at the famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

The tour launches on February 10 at the Five Flags Arena in Dubuque, Iowa and visits several towns including Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Canton, Ohio, Johnson City, Tennessee and more. The tour is currently scheduled through April 16, with more dates to be announced.

Opening for Janson will be Shane Profitt, and hit songwriter Ray Fulcher, who’s co-penned several chart-topping singles with Luke Combs, including “Even Though I’m Leaving” and “Does to Me.”

Chris teases that he will be sharing new music on the road, as he’s expected to release a new album in 2022. It’s lead single, “Bye Mom,” is currently climbing the charts.

“I’m super excited to hit the road in early 2022. It’s been incredible to be back in front of an audience again this year, with crowds more hungry and grateful for live music than ever before,” Chris shares in a statement. “Whether you’re a fan or an artist, there’s nothing like a seeing a live show. I can’t wait to see everyone on the ‘Halfway to Crazy’ Tour and to maybe play y’all some new music that I’ve got coming real soon…”

Tickets go on sale to the public on November 19 at 10 a.m. local time.

Lil Nas X says he feels bad for DaBaby, hopes he “grows from” the controversy

Lil Nas X offered his honest thoughts about embattled rapper DaBaby, who’s repeatedly apologized for the seemingly homophobic comments he made about HIV/AIDS at Miami’s Rolling Loud festival earlier this year.

DaBaby’s remarks nearly derailed his career. Numerous festivals — including Lollapalooza and New York’s Governors Ball — gave him the boot, and he was lambasted by fellow artists such as Megan Thee Stallion and his “Levitating”collaborator, Dua Lipa.

Lil Nas X, who is openly gay, spoke to GQ about the controversy and said he’s more focused on why DaBaby said what he said. While the remarks may have been upsetting, the “Montero” rapper feels the controversy exposes a problem within his industry.

“I’m not going to lie, I feel bad for DaBaby. I hope he grows from it. I hope he’s able to,” said LNX. “I try to remember: Sometimes we’re raised in ways that really shape how we see people. I’m always trying to be forgiving of people and understand that they treat people a certain way because they think they’re doing the right thing.”

The Grammy winner also offered his assessment of hip-hop, remarking that “the whole landscape is very hypermasculine.”

However, he doesn’t see this being the status quo for much longer, telling GQ, “It’s so great and so amazing that all these female rappers are breaking through. And, in a way, female rappers are the biggest rappers right now.”

He continued, “I do feel like this newer generation of rappers who are coming in, and the ones who are here, are going to have to reshape their thoughts. Because change is happening.”

That change, he says, will open the door to more trans and gay rappers — and, he predicts, “Ten years from now, everything that I’m doing won’t even seem like it was shocking.”

Golden Robot Records

Vanilla Fudge has announced plans to release a remastered version its 2007 cover of Led Zeppelin‘s “Ramble On” as a digital download and via streaming services on November 30.

The song is the third advance track from a remastered edition of a full Led Zeppelin covers album called Out Through the In Door that the band originally put out in 2007, and which will be released with a new title, Vanilla Zeppelin, and updated packaging at an as-yet-unannounced date.

You can pre-save the track now on Spotify and Apple Music, and also check out a 30-second clip of the tune, which features Vanilla Fudge putting their own keyboard-driven spin on the hard-rocking Led Zeppelin song. The other remastered Zeppelin cover that the band released in advance of the Vanilla Zeppelin album were “The Immigrant Song” and “Rock and Roll,” which arrived in September 2020 and March 2021, respectively.

Vanilla Fudge’s most recent release was a new cover of the classic 1965 Supremes hit “Stop in the Name of Love,” which the band issued in September. The track featured the final recording of original Fudge bassist Tim Bogert, who died of cancer in January of this year.

In other news, Vanilla Fudge has three concerts lined up this week that will feature the band supporting Doors guitarist Robby Krieger and his solo group. They take place in New York City at Sony Hall tonight and on Tuesday, November 16, and in Ridgefield, Connecticut, at the Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday, November 17.
