Power still out for around 850,000 customers in Puerto Rico amid massive outage

(NEW YORK) — Power is still out for around 850,000 customers in Puerto Rico on Friday, after a massive outage left 1.5 million customers without power, according to LUMA Energy, the company that took over transmission and distribution from the island’s power authority.

As of 12 p.m. on Friday, power was restored for around 660,000 customers. LUMA said most of the island should have power by Friday night and it expects to restore power to “more than 1 million customers during tonight.”

The power outage came after a fire erupted at one of the island’s four main power plants. The exact cause of the interruption of service is under investigation, LUMA said.

“The extent of the outage has impacted each generating facility in Puerto Rico and a significant effort to restore service is underway,” LUMA said in a statement.

Given how widespread the outage is, the government and the energy company said there is no timetable for full restoration.

“We are continuing to make progress in restoration but due to extensive damage at Costa Sur substation, we are not in position to provide an estimate of full restoration at this time,” LUMA said.

Public schools were closed to students on Thursday and Friday due to the outage, according to the island’s governor, Pedro Pierluisi.

Around 100,000 customers were also without water on Thursday due to the power outage, according to president of the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, Doriel Pagán Crespo.

The outage also affected some traffic intersections by shutting off traffic lights, officials warned.

Only essential personnel are being summoned to central government agencies on Friday, Pierluisi said, in another tweet.

Addressing the upcoming hurricane season, Josue Colon, the executive director of the power company, said the electrical grid still needs to be reconstructed and that it would not be responsible for them to say that the island’s grid could withstand a hurricane like 2017’s category 5 Maria.

Måneskin teases new song in support of Ukraine

Måneskin is teasing a new song while expressing support for Ukraine as it continues to fight Russia’s invasion.

In an Instagram post, the Italian rockers share a minute-long clip of the track, which seems to take on a darker tone than past Måneskin tunes like “Beggin'” and “MAMMAMIA.”

“How are you sleeping at night/how do you close both your eyes/living with all of those lives/on your hands?” frontman Damiano David asks in the lyrics.

The clip is accompanied by a caption expressing support for Global Citizen’s Stand Up for Ukraine campaign, which calls on “governments, institutions, corporations, and individuals to donate to humanitarian efforts for Ukraine and refugees from conflicts worldwide, such as Yemen, South Sudan, and Afghanistan.”

“Refugees in Ukraine and around the world need urgent humanitarian aid,” Måneskin writes. “We’re using our voice to demand action, and you can, too.”

Olivia Rodrigo recreates ‘Twilight’ scene with Conan Gray

Olivia Rodrigo is currently on her sold-out SOUR world tour — so what does she do between stops? A new TikTok featuring the Grammy winner explains just that.

Teaming with singer Conan Gray, who made a surprise appearance during her Thursday night show, the “drivers license” singer recreated a now-viral line from the 2008 movie Twilight. The hilarious video was taken at Vancouver’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Olivia and Conan dramatically recreate the scene where Rob Pattinson‘s Edward Cullen reveals to Kristen Stewart‘s Bella Swan that he’s a vampire.

Wearing a crop top and maxi skirt, Olivia twirls around before pretending to scream the line, “As if you can outrun me!” The scene changes to a sped-up clip of her laughing as she half-heartedly runs around the arena in her elevated combat boots — all to the movie’s whooshing sound effects.

Then Conan jumps forward and lip-syncs “As if you can fight me off” before he charges toward a poster of Olivia’s face and pretends to pummel at it, again set to the movie’s dramatic sound effects.

The video was on its way to amassing three million likes as of Friday afternoon and has been viewed more than eight million times since it was posted earlier Friday.

Olivia previously revealed she’s a fan of the Twilight saga. In 2020, she created an original song from Bella’s perspective, and also announced on Twitter around the same time, “My favorite album is the twilight soundtrack and nobody can change my mind.”

While performing in Vancouver, Olivia and Conan jumped on stage together to perform Katy Perry‘s hit “The One That Got Away,” according to videos taken by fans. Olivia is next set to play in Salt Lake City’s UCCU Center on Saturday.

Report: Dead & Company plan to discontinue touring after 2022

Grateful Dead spin-off group Dead & Company are planning to stop touring after 2022, unspecified sources have confirmed to Rolling Stone.

The band, which includes three core Grateful Dead members — Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart — as well as singer/guitarist John Mayer, recently announced a U.S. summer trek running from June 11 through July 16. Tickets for the shows are available now at the group’s official website.

Last year, Kreutzmann missed some Dead & Company concerts because of heart-related issues, which also led him withdraw from his planned appearances at the group’s Playing in the Sand destination festival in Mexico this past January. The festival wound up being canceled because COVID-related issues. It’s not known if Kreutzmann’s heath is a factor in the band retiring from touring.

Dead & Company formed in 2015 and have been a very popular touring act ever since. The band’s other members are ex-Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge, and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti.

Rolling Stone says the band’s management declined to comment on the reports of the group’s plans to stop touring.

Judith Light opens up about multi-dimensional ‘Shining Vale’ character

Horror and comedy collide in the Starz series Shining Vale, airing Sundays. Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear star as Patricia “Pat” Phelps and her husband Terry — a couple that moves their whole family into an old home that turns out to be haunted.

Judith Light plays Pat’s mother, Joan and tells ABC Audio she loves how the show combines genres.

“I think what [show creators] Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan have done has this really combination of comedy and drama and horror that is so deftly connected and complicated and funny,” she shares.

Not only did she love the combination of genres, when it comes to her role, Light says she was drawn to it because she found it “compelling” how Astrof and Horgan packed so many topics into the character.

“I saw with his character… I wanted to talk about women as they age and women and mental illness and the paranormal and relationships with your spouse and relationships with your children, it has everything,” the actress explains. “I don’t know how they did it. So I found it very I found it very compelling.”

At the end of the day, Shining Vale is a completely fictional series, however Light shares that she does believe in the paranormal.

“I do believe that there is something else, and I don’t know how it manifests itself, but I know that there are people that hear those things, see those things,” she says. “I do believe that there is paranormal activity that we are not necessarily prone to see or know.”

“I know that there is paranormal beyond what we know in this body, this tactile connection, that there is something else,” Light adds.

Harry Styles’ “As It Was” debuts at number one in the UK as fastest-selling single of 2022

Unsurprisingly, Harry Styles‘ new single “As It Was” has scored a huge debut on the singles chart in his native U.K.

“As It Was” debuts at number one on the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart with the biggest opening week of any single in 2022 to day. It sold 94,000 copies in its first week and racked up 10.5 million streams — that’s more U.K. streams than any other 2022 song has earned in its first week.

“As It Was” is Harry’s second number-one single back home, following “Sign of the Times,” which was released five years ago this week.

As MusicWeek notes, Harry is now the One Direction member with the most U.K. number ones, and the most U.K. solo hits: He’s had 12, while Zayn Malik has had 11. Niall Horan and Liam Payne have each had eight hits, while Louis Tomlinson‘s had four.

“As It Was” is from Harry’s upcoming third solo album, Harry’s House. We won’t know where the song will land chart-wise in the U.S. for a few days.

Motion Picture Academy bans Will Smith from attending any Academy event for 10 years

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has determined that Will Smith will be banned from attending any of its events — including the Academy Awards — for a decade.

In a statement, the Academy noted Friday, “The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage.”

It continued, “During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.”

“Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”

The statement also expressed its, “deep gratitude to Chris [Rock] for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances,” and thanked “our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.”

Smith resigned from the Academy last week, prior to the decision, saying, “I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions…were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.”

A “heartbroken” Smith, who also posted an apology to the Academy and Rock the Monday after the Oscars, apologized to the “long list” of “those I have hurt,” including Rock…”his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.”

Smith added, “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

Sting releases duet version of his Spanish-language tune “Por Su Amor,” featuring Mexican singer KURT

Sting has just released an updated duet version of “Por Su Amor,” the recent Spanish-language adaptation of his 2021 song, “For Her Love.”

The new recording features the former Police frontman joined by Mexican singer/songwriter KURT, an emerging Latin pop star.

The song is available now via streaming services and as a digital download, while a music video featuring Sting and KURT performing the tune together has premiered on YouTube.

“KURT is a wonderful singer who performs with great authority, sensitivity, and passion,” Sting says in a statement. “I thoroughly enjoyed working together with him on this song.”

Adds Kurt, who used to perform Sting’s songs when he would perform in bars early in his career, “For me, collaborating with Sting has been like getting to know one of my music superheroes…it’s a dream come true, and a true honor.”

As previously reported, “For Your Love” was featured on Sting’s most recent studio album, 2021’s The Bridge, and he was inspired to create a Spanish version during a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where he was captivated by the scenery of Baja, California, and the views of the Gulf of California. The original version of “Por Su Amor” was released in February.

The Spanish lyrics for the tune were written by musician, songwriter and producer Martin Kierszenbaum, who is also Sting’s manager. Martin also co-wrote of “For Her Love” and co-produced The Bridge album with Sting, as well as contributing keyboards to “Por Su Amor” and The Bridge.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ cha-chas to Disney+

The long-running ABC reality competition series Dancing with the Stars is sashaying to Disney+.

“Dancing with the Stars has entertained fans for 16 years on ABC, and we are excited to bring this beloved show exclusively to Disney+ as the platform’s first-ever live series, noted Kareem Daniel, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution chairman, in a surprise announcement.

Season 31 and 32 will run live on the streaming service starting this fall.

“The show’s broad appeal, as well as the overwhelming popularity of its Disney-themed competition nights, make Disney+ the perfect home for DWTS,” Daniel added.

An Instagram post announcing the move was liked by tens of thousands of fans, and earned “praise hands” from dancer Witney Carson, who said, “Huge!” Other dancing pros also replied with their support.

Over the show’s 30 seasons on ABC, the BBC Studios-produced show earned multiple Emmys, and its fall 2021 run, hosted by co-executive producer Tyra Banks, ranked among the top five unscripted series in the 18-49 demographic.

Network execs are reportedly aiming to fill DWTS‘ traditional Monday night slot with NFL football.
