UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson wins ‘no-confidence’ vote

(LONDON) — U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson won a “no-confidence” vote on Monday evening, with Conservative lawmakers voting in favor of his leadership by a margin of 211-148.

The vote could have forced his resignation after the prime minister became embroiled in a series of scandals.

Held by Johnson’s Conservative Party, the vote was the latest challenge aimed at ending the political career of the United Kingdom’s controversial leader.

“Conservative MPs made their choice tonight,” Keir Starmer, leader of the opposing Labour Party, said in a speech following the results. “They have ignored the British public and hitched themselves and their party firmly to Boris Johnson, and everything that he represents.”

Graham Brady, a Conservative MP, announced the vote on Monday morning, saying it had been triggered on Sunday when a 15% threshold of Conservative lawmakers in the House of Commons had decided they no longer trusted Johnson to lead.

“The PM welcomes the opportunity to make his case to MPs and will remind them that when they’re united and focused on the issues that matter to voters there is no more formidable political force,” No. 10 Downing St., Johnson’s office, said in a statement.

Brady told BBC News that he had informed Johnson on Sunday. Members who filed no-confidence letters with Brady had dated them to coincide with the end of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday, so as not to interrupt the celebration, he said.

The prime minister required a simple majority to survive. The Conservative Party holds 359 seats in the U.K. Parliament, meaning he required 180 MPs to back him in order to stay in office.

Despite living to fight another day, the scale of victory could still prove to be a problem. With a close vote, observers say, he could still be pressured to resign at a later date. Under the current rules, however, he will be immune from a similar challenge to his leadership for a year.

Theresa May, Johnson’s predecessor, won a confidence vote 200-117 in December 2018, but would still resign five months later. Johnson received an even lower percentage of support.

The no-confidence vote comes after months of pressure building on Johnson’s leadership, and this is the first vote of its kind since Johnson became prime minister in July 2019.

A much publicized investigation by a top civil servant, Sue Gray, into over a dozen gatherings held at key government residences attending by Downing Street staff concluded in May.

The prime minister himself was personally issued a fine by the Metropolitan Police in April for attending an illegal gathering during COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, becoming the first sitting prime minister in British history to receive a sanction for breaking the law.

Johnson apologized, but has since faced a chorus of calls to resign from opposition lawmakers and, now, members of his own party.

The report included a photo of the prime minister making a toast at a gathering held in No. 10 to mark the departure of one of his special advisers, at a time when the nation was under a strict lockdown. There were also a number of damning details in the report, including “multiple examples of a lack of respect and poor treatment of security and cleaning staff” and instances of “excessive alcohol consumption.”

“Many will be dismayed that behaviour of this kind took place on this scale at the heart of Government,” Gray wrote in the conclusion of the report. “The public have a right to expect the very highest standards of behaviour in such places and clearly what happened fell well short of this.”

While the government has received praise at home and abroad for their support for Ukraine, the scandal over “Partygate” and growing concern about the cost of living has overshadowed Johnson’s recent premiership.

On Friday, Johnson was booed by spectators at St. Paul’s Cathedral as he arrived for the National Service of Thanksgiving.

He has received public backing from several key lawmakers ahead of the no-confidence vote, which is a secret ballot, and Johnson will reportedly address his own MPs in order to make the case for his leadership ahead of the final vote on Monday evening.

“The process of making this album has been the most fulfilling yet, and I’m grateful to my fans and collaborators for being on this journey with me,” they said in a statement. “Never have I been more sure of myself and my music, and this record speaks that for itself.”

Demi continued, “To my Lovatics who have been rocking out with me since the beginning and those who are just now coming along for the ride, thank you. This record is for you.”

They also released the official teaser of the album and its promotional artwork, which shows Demi all tied up and striking a seductive pose while lying down on a bed shaped like a cross. The teaser, which also previews some new music, shows some behind-the-scenes videos of Demi making their album before jump-cutting to them silently sitting in their bathtub.

Country fans will get to take a walk down memory lane in a new series about Austin City Limits.

Circle Network is partnering with ACL to present the 12-episode series Austin City Limits: Country, going back into the ACL vault to air episodes from decades prior.

Circle has acquired the licensing to several episodes featuring country music greats, including Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, Reba McEntire and George Jones, which will air throughout the course of the series this summer.

Narrated by Rodney Crowell, the show will offer insight into each artist’s career at the time, as well the remastered ACL performances that haven’t aired since their original broadcast and never-before-scene interviews.

The first episode in the series is the late Charlie Daniels‘ performance on ACL in 1976, where he performed his signature hits “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Long Haired Country Boy.” In a re-airing of Reba’s episode from 1987, fans will get to see her sing “Whoever’s in New England,” while the Johnny Cash episode sees him teaming up with his wife June and The Cash Family in 1987 in his only appearance on ACL, where they sang his legendary hits “Ring of Fire,” “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues.”

Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams Jr. and more are also featured in the series, which will air Wednesday nights on the Circle Network beginning June 8 at 10 p.m. ET.

(PHILADELPHIA) — At least two suspects in a mass shooting Saturday night in Philadelphia are expected to be charged as early as Monday afternoon as police continue to work to identify other gunmen in the rampage that left three people dead and 11 injured, according to prosecutors.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said at a news conference Monday morning that he expects to approve charges soon against two suspects “in connection to what we anticipate are non-fatal shootings.”

Krasner, who did not name the suspects, said he expects to sign off on the charges stemming from the gun violence by the end of Monday.

He said that based on the caliber of shell casings found at the crime scene, at least four guns were involved in the shooting on Second Street, a popular nightlife area full of bars and restaurants.

Philadelphia police officials said officers recovered two guns from the scene, including one with an extended magazine, authorities said.

“Hour by hour we are finding out more information,” Kramer said.

Krasner described witnessing a “chilling” scene when he visited the site of the shooting just hours after it occurred.

“It is no less chilling that it happened in no less than 10 places around the country in a space of a few days,” said Krasner, referring to mass shootings that occurred over the weekend in nine different states that left a total of at least 17 people dead and 62 injured.

The Philadelphia shooting erupted just before midnight Saturday at the busy intersection of Third and South streets.

Inspector D.F. Pace of the Philadelphia Police Department said hundreds of people were milling about the area when the shooting caused a panic and sent people running in all directions, some diving behind cars for cover.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a press conference Sunday afternoon that a police officer responding to gunshots in the area witnessed a man firing a gun into a crowd and attempted to detain him. Outlaw said the officer fired at the armed man three times before losing the assailant in the crowd.

Outlaw said investigators believe the officer shot the gunman, who is still being sought.

Investigators are combing through security video to identify the suspects and determine a motive for the shooting.

Outlaw said the shooting possibly started during a physical confrontation between two people, including one of the people killed in the incident.

“These individuals eventually began firing at one another with both being struck, one fatally,” Outlaw said.

Outlaw said two of the slain victims were innocent bystanders as well as many of those who were wounded.

One of those killed was identified as Kris Minners, a resident adviser at Girard College in Philadelphia, the Girard College Federation of Teachers union said in a statement. Two more victims were identified by the Philadelphia Police Department Sunday afternoon as 34-year-old Gregory Jackson and 27-year-old Alexis Quinn.

“The loss of Kris reminds us that gun violence can and will touch everyone in our nation as long as our elected officials allow it to continue,” the teachers’ union statement read.

It’s due-date month for Luke Combs and his wife, Nicole: The country star couple is expecting their first child — a boy — and Nicole confirmed during a recent social media fan Q&A that they’re expecting their bundle of joy in June.

Though he isn’t even here yet, baby boy Combs got a warm welcome in the form of an adorable baby shower, and Nicole shared pictures of the event on Instagram.

Hosted by Nicole’s sister Jenna Hocking, the shower was “Cutie”-themed: Cutie tangerines were a major decor theme, with custom cookies decorated in orange, white and green that read, “A little cutie is on the way.”

“Thank you to everyone that came and made this day so special,” Nicole wrote, sharing a slideshow of snapshots from the event. Among them were two pics of her and Luke posing on a rooftop, with Luke cradling her belly.

Over on Jenna’s social media, she also shared photos of the event, including a decorate-your-own-onesie station. One of the hand-drawn onesie designs was a crocodile, a fitting choice for Luke and Nicole’s baby. Luke is famously a fan of Crocs footwear and he even has his own, currently sold out, custom limited-edition Crocs shoe.

Luke and Nicole first announced Nicole’s pregnancy in January. The couple have been married since August 2020.

Vampires are immortal, and so far, so is the mockumentary series about them, What We Do In The Shadows. FX has renewed the show for season 5 and 6, before its fourth season premieres in July.

In a statement, Nick Grad, FX’s president of original programming, said, “There’s a lot of life left in our favorite vampires from Staten Island and FX couldn’t be more thrilled to commit to two additional seasons of this phenomenal series.”

He added, the show “excels on every level, from the brilliant cast and surprising guest stars to the producers, writers, directors and crew. We can’t wait for everyone to enjoy season four, knowing that the next two are on the way.”

Based on the cult hit feature film by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the series stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Mark Proksch and Harvey Guillén. In two seasons the show has received 10 Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Its guest stars have included Marvel movie star Benedict Wong, Hayley Joel Osment, Star WarsMark Hamill and Nick Kroll.

Prosksch told ABC Audio the guest stars are the cherry on top of the show’s success. “You kind of catch yourself in that moment where you say to yourself, ‘If 10 years ago I had all of a sudden landed right here in this moment, I wouldn’t believe it.’ I’m standing in front of Mark Hamill, my childhood hero … and I’m getting to act with him. That’s something that you really pinch yourself about.”

He also says he’s been tickled seeing fans cosplaying as the show’s cast. “[S]eeing stuff like that and people really responding to your character is special. I mean, that doesn’t happen too often anymore.” (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)

The show’s fourth season premiere debuts July 12 at 10 p.m. Eastern time on FX.

Kate Bush didn’t need a deal with God to finally notch a top-10 hit, just a placement on Stranger Things.

The English singer’s song “Running Up That Hill,” which has seen a resurgence over the past week after being featured in the newly premiered fourth season of Netflix’s ever-popular sci-fi series, reenters the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 this week at #8. It had previously peaked at #30 following its original release in 1985.

All told, “Running Up That Hill” waited 36 years, nine months and one week to hit the top 10 after it first appeared on the Hot 100. That’s the longest gap between Hot 100 debut and top-10 placement since Chuck Berry‘s “Run Rudolph Run” took 62 years and two weeks to reach the mark in 2020.

The renewed interest in “Running Up That Hill” even led the notoriously press-shy Bush to issue a public statement.

“It’s all really exciting!” Bush wrote, adding that she’s a big Stranger Things fan. “Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song.”

Christina Aguilera is juggling many hats these days — she’s raising two kids, working on new music and is about to headline LA Pride — so how does she cool off after a super busy day?

The Grammy winner will “wine down,” she told People, and described what that looks like. “It’s by the pool. Just relaxing, you don’t have to go in, you can lounge around. I really like it at night. I love a night swim. It just has a sexy vibe to it,” she revealed.

Christina also spoke about her swanky pool, adding, “I literally have it where it lights up in multiple moody colors. So it can be purple, red, green … I’m all about a mood, and all about an ambiance and an aesthetic.”

“I don’t always need to go out or be seen,” she continued. “When you do, that’s great, too. But I love entertaining in the backyard for my friends and my family and bringing everyone in and feeling the togetherness.”

Speaking of the LA Pride Festival, where the “Beautiful” singer will take the stage as this year’s headliner on Saturday, she remarked, “Performing at Pride is so special, because it is unique within the fact that there is such a strong sense of community, and oneness and support and equality where everyone’s just there to have a good time.”

“They don’t try to conform to a rulebook and they want to live colorfully and out loud, and whatever that means to them,” Christina said. “It’s such a crowd of creativity and expression.”

Last year, Perry Farrell and his Kind Heaven Orchestra project performed a rooftop concert at the Pendry Chicago hotel to celebrate the return of Lollapalooza, which had been canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That unique show is now set to stream online next month.

The streaming platform Veeps is set to premiere the performance on July 22. A press release describes the concert as an “audio sensory journey of artistic fusion set against the glistening skylines of Chicago,” featuring renditions of songs by Farrell’s bands Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros, as well as original Kind Heaven Orchestra material.

“At that point there were no festivals happening; for almost 2 years,” Farrell recalls. “We needed to come back. Lolla went for it. Listened to the science, worked with the doctors and the mayor. Suddenly there we were, the Kind Heaven Orchestra set on high, surrounded by Chicago skyscrapers. Our hearts were released.”

Tickets to watch the stream are on sale now via PerryFarrell.Veeps.com.

Farrell, meanwhile, has been busy reuniting Porno for Pyros, which played their first show in 26 years during May’s Welcome to Rockville festival. The group has also announced shows in Chicago and Los Angeles for July.
