See just-discovered photos of The Beatles playing The Cavern Club in 1961

Wednesday marks the 60th anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ debut single, “Love Me Do.” But the Beatles-themed Liverpool attraction The Beatles Story has just posted newly discovered photos of the band playing at Liverpool’s The Cavern Club more than a year before that single came out.

The two photographs were taken in July 1961, when George Harrison, Paul McCartney and John Lennon were 18, 19 and 20, respectively. Their drummer at the time was Pete Best, who was also 19.

Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn says the photos show the band right after they’d returned from performing for 90 days in Hamburg, Germany. He notes that they all look very thin, likely due to an insane schedule that saw them spend 500 hours onstage over those three months. They’re also wearing leather trousers and cotton shirts, a combo Lewisohn says never showed up in previous photos.

Four months after the photo was taken, Brian Epstein saw the Beatles for the first time at The Cavern Club and soon after offered to manage them.

In honor of the single’s 60th birthday, fans are invited to bring their Beatles or Beatles-era memorabilia to The Beatles Story attraction Wednesday, where it’ll be appraised for free, Antiques Roadshow-style, by a specialist Beatles auction house.

Shaken and stirred: Monday night is “James Bond Night” on ‘Dancing with the Stars’

The 14 remaining couples will be shaken and stirred — more than usual — on Monday night’s installment of Dancing with the Stars on Disney+ as the iconic music of the James Bond films takes center stage.

The special theme celebrates the 60th birthday of the spy series’ first film, Dr. No, starring Sean Connery as Bond, but the music will span the movies of everyone who has worn the tux, up to and including Daniel Craig‘s just-wrapped run.

The show airs live beginning at 8 p.m. and can also be watched on demand.

‘The Good Doctor’ returns to ABC Monday night

ABC’s acclaimed medical drama The Good Doctor finally returns at 10 p.m. Monday for fans eager to learn what comes from the show’s cliffhanger season finale.

In the closing moments of the previous season, things were rosy at a rooftop wedding ceremony for Freddie Highmore‘s Dr. Shaun Murphy and Paige Spara‘s Lea Diallo.

However, fans were left wondering what happened to Christina Chang‘s Dr. Lim and Elfina Luk‘s nurse Villenueva after the latter’s abusive ex stabbed them, leaving them in a pool of blood floors below the party.

“We’ll sort of pick up in the immediate aftermath,” Highmore says without divulging any spoilers.

The actor, whose character is on the autism spectrum, says Shaun brings out the best of him. “I feel like playing Shaun sometimes makes me a better person,” he admits. “I think because I’m a Brit, I’m naturally quite cynical, and Shaun being the opposite of that probably rubs off on me in a good way.”

He also reckons Shaun is what keeps people tuning in as they mount their sixth season. “I think initially it was, you know, the fact that Shaun was such a hopeful character and in a time where the hope was maybe hard to come by, and that probably remains true to some extent today,” Highmore says.

“And so I think, you know, having a character like Shaun was refreshing and hopefully remains so.”

John Waite excited that “Missing You” is featured on ‘The Goldbergs’ this week

John Waite‘s smash “Missing You” is going to pop up in an unexpected place this week.

The track, which hit #1 in 1984, is the featured song on Wednesday night’s episode of ABC’s The Goldbergs. The sitcom, set in the ’80s, features one hit from that decade in each episode. In a statement, Waite says the inclusion of “Missing You” is “rad.”

Waite, who also had success as a member of The Babys and Bad English, and has been part of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band in the past, will kick off a tour October 28 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He’s set to be on the road through November 20, when he’ll wrap things up in Cincinnati.

Ex-Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman is putting his entire visual history online — for a price

Since streaming seems to have made DVDs and Blu-rays all but extinct, former Yes keyboard whiz Rick Wakeman has come up with a unique way to share his visual history with his fans.

Wakeman has launched Wakeman Web TV, a one-stop shop for onstage and TV appearances. From episodes of Gastank, the early ’80s British TV show he hosted, to his appearances on various British and European programs, to live concerts and performances, this online portal has it all.

And in a unique twist, you don’t have to pay a subscription fee to access the material: It’s set up as a Pay-Per-View model, where you can just pay for the things you want to see. Live performances are around 10 bucks to stream for a week, or $20 to download anytime.

Wakeman says in a statement that he wants to “give fans old and new the best way to view and listen to the music,” and feels that Wakeman Web TV is “a very sensible alternative to those platforms that already exist.”

Odessa A’zion says it wasn’t hard to act scared in ‘Hellraiser’ reboot

On October 4, a reboot of the classic horror franchise Hellraiser comes to haunt Hulu.

Odessa A’zion, the real-life daughter of Better Things‘ Pamela Adlon, plays Riley, who comes to learn it isn’t advisable to mess around with mysterious black magic boxes.

Doing so brings other-dimensional creatures called cenobites to Riley’s world, led by the iconic and aptly named Pinhead, played this time around by trans actress Jamie Clayton.

A’zion tells ABC Audio it wasn’t hard to look scared around the pale-faced, sadomasochistic creatures, because unlike other movies, they weren’t computer-generated.

“Sometimes, you know, you do scenes with a tennis ball on a stick,” she says of what actors sometimes have to look at on set, before special effects wizards add in CG monsters. “We had none of that. This was all right in front of us, exactly like you saw in the trailer, exactly like you’ll see in the movie.”

“We were doing scenes with real cenobites,” she laughs. “It’s crazy, it was all practical, it was incredible to look at. It was insane!

She added of Josh and Sierra Russell‘s Russell FX artists, who worked with Hellraiser director David Bruckner on his horror films The Ritual and The Night House, “These guys are so talented!”

Janet Jackson to release deluxe edition of ’The Velvet Rope’

New music from the legendary Janet Jackson is on the way.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of Jackson’s sixth studio album, The Velvet Rope, the five-time Grammy winner will release a deluxe version on October 7, the same day it was released in 1997.

The two-part deluxe version will be comprised of an A side — the album’s 23 original tracks, along with two bonus tracks — and a B side of 13 remixes. Ten of the tracks will be new to streaming services.

In tandem with the release, remastered HD videos of tracks from The Velvet Rope, including “Go Deep,” “I Get Lonely,” “You,” “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” and “Together Again [Deeper Remix],” will be available on Jackson’s official YouTube page.

Originally produced by Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Jackson, The Velvet Rope debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and turned out multiple #1 hits, as well as a Grammy Award for “Got ’Til It’s Gone” ft. Q-Tip & Joni Mitchell.

The Velvet Rope: Deluxe Edition arrives October 7 and is available for presave on major streaming services.

University in Tom Petty’s hometown honoring him with Tom Petty Day, capsule collection

Tom Petty was a proud son of Gainesville, Florida, and the city’s university plans to honor the late rocker with Tom Petty Day.

The University of Florida has announced that this year’s UF/Louisiana State University game on October 15 will be the inaugural Tom Petty Day, with plans to continue celebrating it well into the future. The Tom Petty Estate is collaborating with UF on a capsule collection, with proceeds going to two local Gainesville charities: Kids Count and Family Promise. The collection is for sale on Petty’s online merch store.

Since his death in 2017, it’s been a tradition at UF games to sing Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” at the end of the third quarter.

While Petty didn’t attend UF, he did work on the school’s grounds crew. In fact, there’s a lime tree on campus called the Tom Petty tree, in honor of the fact that he supposedly planted it during his stint on the crew — although in 2011, Petty said he didn’t remember doing so.

Wolfgang Van Halen feels “closure” after performing Van Halen songs at Taylor Hawkins tribute

Among the many highlights of the Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts last month was Wolfgang Van Halen playing the riffs of his late father, Eddie Van Halen, as he ripped classic Van Halen tunes, including “Hot for Teacher” and “Panama.” However, if you thought that performance might be a catalyst toward getting that much-discussed Van Halen tribute off the ground, you probably shouldn’t hold your breath.

“I think I already did it with the Taylor Hawkins tributes,” Wolf tells Classic Rock magazine. “I feel a lot of closure because my part of the show was a tribute to my father.”

As previously reported, rumors of a Van Halen tribute to Eddie began earlier this year after ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted revealed he was approached by VH drummer Alex Van Halen and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani for a jam session that ultimately “fizzled.” Satriani then confirmed that he’d been speaking with Alex and VH vocalist David Lee Roth about a potential tribute.

Wolf later told Rolling Stone that there was an “attempt” at some kind of tribute, but it ultimately never got off the ground. “We made an attempt, and some people can be hard to work with, and made it not happen.”

Wolf reiterates as much speaking now with Classic Rock.

“When it comes to Van Halen and entities surrounding the band, it’s unfortunate, certainly compared to Foo Fighters who have their s*** together with interpersonal relationships,” Wolf says. “I don’t know what it is with some bands but certain personalities just can’t get over themselves to work collectively for one purpose — that’s been the curse of Van Halen for its entire career.”

He adds, “My playing at the Taylor shows delivered that catharsis without the stresses of dealing with the Van Halen camp, and the players involved.”

“I will look in triumph at my enemies”: Will Smith’s trailer for ‘Emancipation’ makes debut

Fans can finally get their first look at Will Smith in the new trailer to Antoine Fuqua‘s fugitive slave drama, Emancipation.

The film had its debut on Saturday, with a special Washington, D.C., screening during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Legislative Conference, but it will hit theaters nationwide on December 2 and Apple TV+ on December 9.

The streaming site teases the film is, “Inspired by the gripping true story of a man who would do anything for his family — and for freedom.”

Smith plays Peter, an enslaved man who “risks his life to escape and return to his family, he embarks on a perilous journey of love and endurance.”

That journey, a three-day trek through the unforgiving swamps of the Civil War South with captors in pursuit, will lead Peter to the Union Army’s lines and his freedom.

Shot in stark black-and-white tones, the trailer showcases Fuqua’s cinematic gifts.

The film would have been a surefire Oscar contender for Smith, but for his outburst at the Academy Awards that led to a 10-year ban from the event. In a new chat with Deadline, Fuqua insisted Apple never gave up on the movie.

“They never stopped talking about releasing the film, and when would be best strategically,” he commented. “Apple would call me often, with Will, and I have to say Apple has been amazing through this whole film.”

The Apple Originals film also stars Ben Foster, Steven Ogg, Charmaine Bingwa and Mustafa Shakir.
