New Music Friday: Latto, Chris Brown, Tyga, Lil Durk and more

Need some new songs to add to your rotation? Here’s some of the latest in the culture for this week’s New Music Friday.

Lil Durk, Loyal Bros 2 — The 23-track album is a compilation of songs featuring artists from his Only the Family collective. OTF signees Doodie Lo, Booka600, Chief Wuk, Noza Jordan and the late King Von appear on the project, as well as Kodak Black, Future and Trippie Redd. It’s the fourth OTF compilation to drop.

Ab-Soul, Herbert — The TDE rapper makes his return with his first album in six years. He hopes the project will help others know they’re not alone in this world. “We’re all going through things, all of us,” he told Rolling Stone. “Me sharing my testimony—if it doesn’t help, it might let you know you’re not the only one going through it. That’s what ultimately gives me the courage to put it out there.”

Young Dolph, Paper Route Frank — The posthumous album marks his first full-length release following his death last year. The 13-song album sees collaborations with Gucci Mane, Key Glock, 2 Chainz, Moochie Grape and Snap Bandz, and production from Dun Deal, Drumma Boy, Bandplay Sosa808 and more.

Jacquees, Sincerely for You — The follow-up to 2019’s King of R&B sees features from 21 Savage andTory Lanez, as well as Summer Walker and 6LACK, who’s on his newly released single “Tell Me It’s Over.”

Jim Jones, 12 Days of Xmas — The Harlem native is back with another Christmas album. This one features skits from comedian Rayy Rayy.

Garth Brooks to headline the Mack, Jack & McConaughey 2023 gala for charity

Garth Brooks is putting a headlining event for a charitable cause on the books for 2023.

The global superstar will be next year’s headliner for the Mack, Jack & McConaughey gala, an annual two-day event that raises funds for the charity’s mission of empowering children. The organization is a partnership between actor Matthew McConaughey, artist and songwriter Jack Ingram and legendary college football coach Mack Brown.

CureDuchenne, Dell Children’s Medical Center, HeartGift, just keep livin Foundation and The Rise School of Austin are this year’s beneficiaries. Their missions range from curing Duchenne muscular dystrophy to helping children of all learning styles and developmental backgrounds succeed at school.

The Mack, Jack & McConaughey fundraiser features a golf tournament, a fashion show and special in-the-round-style singer-songwriter show called Jack & Friends. The centerpiece of the event is the gala, which includes a red carpet, auction and, of course, a headlining performance from Garth.

The 2023 event will be held April 27-28 in Austin, Texas.

Megadeth premieres video for ’The Sick, the Dying…and the Dead!’ track “Killing Time”

Megadeth has premiered the video for “Killing Time,” a track off the band’s new album, The Sick, the Dying…and the Dead!

The clip is the fifth chapter in Dave Mustaine and company’s ongoing video saga, which tells the origin story of Megadeth’s Vic Rattlehead mascot, who apparently is a pretty good sword fighter. You can watch it now streaming on YouTube.

Previous installments in the series are accompanied by the songs “We’ll Be Back,” the Ice-T-featuring “Night Stalkers,” “Life in Hell” and The Sick title track.

Megadeth released The Sick, the Dying…and the Dead! in September. The thrashers supported the record on a tour with Five Finger Death Punch.

Meanwhile, “We’ll Be Back” is nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 2023 Grammys.

New Music Friday: Lewis Capaldi, Niall Horan, Ellie Goulding, Cardi B, Måneskin, Carly Rae Jepsen and more

It’s Friday! Let’s see who’s out with new tunes …

Lewis Capaldi released the music video for “Pointless.” The video stars a mother and a son, showing all the ways they make each other feel loved through the years. Lewis’ second album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, arrives May 19.

Speaking of Lewis, he teamed up with Niall Horan for a cover of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” They recorded the song for the documentary Niall Horan’s Homecoming: The Road to Mullingar With Lewis Capaldi.

Ellie Goulding teamed up with Alok and Sigala for “All By Myself,” a dance song about self-love and independence.

Måneskin is out with their latest single, “LA FINE,” which features them singing in their native Italian over grunge-like elements.

Cardi B teamed up with Latin singer Rosalía for a “DESPECHÁ” remix, where she spits bars about making her haters green with envy.

Carly Rae Jepsen released the music video for “Surrender My Heart,” which sees her starring in a Broadway musical alongside 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski.

Latto released the visualizer for “Another Nasty Song,” where she parades around in leather outfits for the ultra suggestive single.

Silversun Pickups share cover of Low’s “Just Like Christmas” in honor of Mimi Parker

Silversun Pickups have released a cover of the Low song “Just Like Christmas.”

Proceeds from the recording will benefit the Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities charity in honor of late Low drummer Mimi Parker, who passed away in November following a two-year battle with ovarian cancer.

“We’ve been fans of Low’s beautiful music for a long time now,” SSPU says. “When we heard the news about Mimi’s passing, we were incredibly sad.”

The band adds that they’re releasing the cover with the “blessing” of Low co-founder and Parker’s husband, Alan Sparhawk.

Other artists who’ve paid tribute to Parker over the last month include Led Zeppelin‘s Robert Plant and Tool‘s Maynard James Keenan.

Mary McCartney got “chills” from Kate Bush’s Abbey Road doc contribution

While Abbey Road Studios is most associated with the Beatles, plenty of other artists recorded there, and that was an important point director Mary McCartney wanted to get across in her new documentary, If These Walls Could Sing, which debuts Friday on Disney+.

Believe it or not, Mary says her first memory of the studio has nothing to do with her famous dad, Paul McCartney, but with another artist entirely.

“I think my first sort of memory [of Abbey Road] is walking into the reception area when I was a little kid, probably like 6 or 7,” Mary tells Yahoo Music. “The reception area there used to have photographs of all of the musicians that had been there before, this beautiful gallery of pictures. And there was Kate Bush. … I really remember seeing that picture.”

Because of that, Mary felt it was important to have Kate in the doc — and this was before the resurgence of her song “Running Up That Hill,” thanks to Stranger Things. Mary says when she first reached out for an interview, Kate turned her down because she doesn’t do them. But Mary didn’t give up and eventually got Kate to record an audio clip for the doc.

“I heard it, and I got chills. … I literally couldn’t believe my luck,” Mary says. “It is one of the highlights of my life, getting to know Kate and being able to speak to her about her history there.”

More dates have been added to Janet Jackson’s Together Again tour

Janet Jackson‘s upcoming tour is in high demand, so she’s added a few more dates to the trek.

Fans in New York, Atlanta and Hollywood, Florida, will have another opportunity to secure their seats for the Together Again tour, as an additional show will take place in each city. The singer will also make a stop in Allentown, Pennsylvania, while on the road; she’ll perform in 37 cities over the course of two months.

Produced by Live Nation, Janet’s outing is meant to bring people “together again,” this time in celebration of her 50th anniversary in entertainment, as well as the anniversaries of her albums The Velvet Rope (25 years) and janet (30 years).

Special guest Ludacris will join Janet on all dates. Tickets are currently on sale at LiveNation.com.

RCA Records drops soundtrack for upcoming Whitney Houston biopic

As we near the date of the upcoming Whitney Houston biopic, a soundtrack for the movie has been released.

RCA Records dropped I Wanna Dance With Somebody (The Movie: Whitney New, Classic and Reimagined) on Friday, featuring 35 songs spanning 20 years of the singer’s career. The nearly two-hour project — a mixture of remixed and original versions of Houston songs — is meant to serve “as a musical memoir of the cinematic voyage,” according to a press release.

“We are thrilled to be releasing the amazing 35-song soundtrack to the Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody film with RCA Records,” Pat Houston, president of Whitney’s estate, said in a statement. “We think the fans will be excited to hear some incredible music they know and love, as well as some new never-before-released tracks, including ‘Far Enough’ and the incredible ‘Don’t Cry For Me,’ which ends the film.”

“This totally unique soundtrack album brings many of Whitney’s classics into 2023 and beyond,” added Houston’s longtime mentor Clive Davis. “Contemporary, current and often scorching, if you love Whitney’s music, you must own this album!”

The I Wanna Dance With Somebody soundtrack includes collaborations with Lucky Daye, BeBe Winans, Clean Bandit, Kygo, SG Lewis, Samaria, Jax Jones, Leikeli47, P2J, Oxlade and Pheelz, with production from Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Sam Felt.

The biopic premieres on December 23.

Dionne Warwick calls out Pete Davidson for not asking her out on a date

Dionne Warwick is well aware of comedian Pete Davidson‘s impressive list of girlfriends and wants to know why she hasn’t made the cut.

The legendary singer appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where she called out Davidson for not giving her a passing glance. Warwick, who is 82, predicted in November that she would be dating the Saturday Night Live alum after he parted ways with reality star Kim Kardashian.

When asked if she’s heard from Davidson, the singer lamented, “No, I haven’t.”

“I’m thinking he’s dating everybody else, why not me?” she cracked.

In addition to Kardashian, Davidson famously dated singer Ariana Grande and is now linked to model Emily Ratajkowski.

Dionne also expressed interest in cozying up with Leonardo DiCaprio because “he’s a cutie.”

She also jokingly referenced the rumor claiming DiCaprio only dates women under 25 years of age. She recalled an event where the two crossed paths and noted, “But he didn’t have eyes on me, he had eyes on my granddaughter [26-year-old Cheyenne Elliott].”

Dionne then quipped while wagging a finger, “So I had to get him to understand.” She didn’t say when that run-in took place.

Tense new ‘Oppenheimer’ trailer screens ahead of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’

Audiences who raced to see Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters got the first real peek of another anticipated film, Christopher Nolan‘s star-studded Oppenheimer.

As reported, frequent Nolan player Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in the drama based on the Pulitzer-winning 2005 book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The trailer shows Matt Damon as Leslie Richard Groves Jr., a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who directed the Manhattan Project, which gave birth to The Bomb. “You’re a dilettante, a womanizer, unstable, theatrical, neurotic,” he tells Oppenheimer.

“Brilliance makes up for a lot,” the scientist quips back.

The trailer shows the bomb’s construction, which is cited as the “one hope” to stop World War II. It also delves into the danger of theoretical physics becoming real: Some of the scientists thought testing the bomb would incinerate the Earth’s atmosphere.

“Are we saying there’s a chance when we push that button, we destroy the world?” Damon’s character asks, incredulous.

Oppenheimer answers flatly, “Chances are near zero.”

As military men and scientists brace for the test, the tension amps up, until detonation.

“Well, we all know what happened later,” Robert Downey Jr. understates as eventual U.S. Atomic Energy Commission head Lewis Strauss in a Capitol Hill meeting.

“What happened later” was two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, one on Hiroshima and another on Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of people and leading to Japan’s surrender.

Oppenheimer also stars Oscar winner Gary Oldman as President Harry Truman and Emily Blunt, playing Oppenheimer’s botanist wife, Kitty, as well as Oscar winner Rami Malek, Jack Quaid, Florence Pugh, Matthew Modine, Kenneth Branagh and James Remar, among others.

The trailer has yet to be posted online.

Oppenheimer debuts in theaters July 21, 2023.
