“It’s amazing!”: Tenoch Huerta and Mabel Cadena celebrate indigenous representation in ‘Wakanda Forever’

While the original Black Panther was hailed for bringing Black heroes to the forefront, its hit sequel, Wakanda Foreveris earning praise for a change of its antagonist’s origin to highlight Meso-American heritage.

Namor was one of Marvel Comics’ first characters back in 1939, and although he predated DC Comics’ Aquaman, Namor’s reign as the King of Atlantis was preceded in theaters by Jason Momoa‘s movie of the same name.

So director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios’ producer Nate Moore and president Kevin Feige reimagined Namor for Wakanda Forever as being the ruler of the Aztec-themed underwater world of Talokan. This meant more representation for actors of color, specifically Mexican-born Tenoch Huerta and Mabel Cadena, who respectively played Namor and his cousin and advisor, Namora.

Cadena gushed at a recent press event, “As a Mexican woman, a Latin American woman it’s like, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing!’ I’m very proud to be part of something like this, because it’s not just a superhero movie, you know?” She added, “Before, I never thought I could be a superhero. And now thanks Black Panther, thanks Ryan, Thanks Kevin, Nate. Lupita [Nyong’o], Letitia [Wright], Danai [Gurira], Chadwick [Boseman], I have this new opportunity to believe in me…!”

Huerta said changing Namor’s origins was “a fantastic move,” adding, “I hope this helps the people to embrace who they are, who we are. You know? [Everybody can] look at the mirror and see what is in the mirror is okay.”

The actor explains, “You know…almost everybody in Mexico is has indigenous or African roots. It’s about culture. You know, so culturally we are a part of indigenous roots. So [we now can] embrace those roots, and honor these two main sources.”

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.

The Weeknd is flirting with the idea of taking his compilation album Trilogy — which contains his first three mixtapes — off of streaming platforms. He said the reason would be to prevent confusion.

The singer took to Twitter on Sunday to explain, “if y’all wanna hear the trilogy how it’s supposed to be listened to … listen to House of BalloonsThursday and Echoes of Silence individually.”

Last year, The Weeknd announced he released his debut mixtape House of Balloons onto streaming services “in its original incarnation” in celebration of its 10th anniversary. It contained “the original mixes and samples” that aren’t available on the Trilogy album.

He gave his next two mixtapes the same treatment on their respective anniversaries.

Now that fans can stream his first three individual mixtapes, The Weeknd wants to remove his compilation album from streaming platforms. He explained, “Not all samples are on trilogy and the mix isn’t the original mix. But shout out trilogy but fyi, for the new fans, it isn’t an album.”

“I might get rid of the compilation just so there’s no more confusion, now that ALL the samples are finally cleared since December 17, 2021,” the singer continued in a follow-up tweet

He later clarified, “But I also know there are fans of the compilation so I might not get rid of it.”

Fans reacted to the announcement with confusion, with some pushing back against the move.

When one fan argued Trilogy is “better” than the individual mixtapes, the singer fired back, “yeah but for example [“The Birds (Part 2)”] on original is wayyyy better sounding than on trilogy … my personal opinion.”

At this time, Trilogy is still available on streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora and Apple Music.

Earlier this year, Joni Mitchell was a surprise guest at the Newport Folk Festival, where she performed her first full set of songs in concert in more than 20 years. Fans may soon be able to relive that performance in the form of a live album.

Mitchell sat down with Elton John last weekend for his Rocket Hour radio show on Apple Music 1, and during the chat, Elton mentioned that there’s going to be an album coming out documenting that performance. Mitchell confirmed the news, responding, “We’re trying to put that out.”

During the concert, Mitchell joined superfan Brandi Carlile onstage and sang along with her for most of the 13-song set, which included classics like “Both Sides Now,” “Big Yellow Taxi” and “The Circle Game.”

“It’s extraordinary how good it is,” Elton added. “And you didn’t have much rehearsal, did you?”

“Didn’t have any,” the legendary singer/songwriter replied. She then noted that she was unable to sing in her original key, since she’s now an alto, not a soprano. However, “I thought people might feel slighted if I just played the guitar part … so it was very well received, much to my delight.”

Mitchell also spoke with Elton about getting a lot of flak for her now-classic albums like Blue, Court and Spark, Ladies of the Canyon and The Hissing of Summer Lawns.

“People thought that it was too intimate,” she explained. “It was almost like Dylan going electric. I think it upset the male singer-songwriters. They’d go, ‘Oh, no. Do we have to bear our souls like this now?’ I think it made people nervous … It took to this generation, they seem to be able to face those emotions more easily than my generation.”

Aerosmith has teamed up with the Red Cross to help support relief efforts in Florida following the recent Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole storms.

The “Dream On” rockers are donating two emergency vehicles to be used by the Red Cross of Central Florida. The trucks will debut in 2023 and will be branded with Aerosmith’s logo.

“Aerosmith and I were devastated by the disastrous impact of Hurricane Ian,” says guitarist Joe Perry, who also lives in Florida. “Too often we are seeing these disasters increase in frequency and intensity due to climate change, having a strong Red Cross is more critical than ever before.”

Perry adds, “We’re proud to support the Red Cross and we know these vehicles will be an important tool helping people in need for years to come.”

Aerosmith is also preparing for the return of the band’s Las Vegas residency, which picks up November 19 for another eight-show engagement at the Dolby Live theater at the Park MGM resort.

Publisher delays release of Aaron Carter’s posthumous memoir “out of respect for the Carter family”

Gabe Ginsberg/Getty Images

After being met with backlash from Aaron Carter‘s family, management team and friends like Hilary Duff, the publisher who was going to release the late singer’s memoir decided to shelf the project “out of respect.”

As previously reported, Ballast Books announced shortly after Aaron’s untimely death that it would release Aaron Carter: An Incomplete Story of an Incomplete Life. The decision was criticized by fans, friends and colleagues of the late singer.

In response to the backlash, Ballast Books delayed the release. Company’s attorney Scott Atherton and author Andy Symonds said in a joint statement to Page Six, “Out of respect for the Carter family, my client has decided to defer the further release of the book at this time.”

The statement continued, “Mr. Carter was not just a celebrity but also a father, a brother, a son, and a friend to many still grieving for him.”

“The more important story is about Mr. Carter’s life and what people can learn from his professional success, personal struggles, and tragic passing,” it added.

Atherton noted Carter “wanted his story told,” while author Symonds expressed, “In addition to being cathartic for him, Aaron hoped this book would help others struggling with addiction and mental illness.”

Despite these claims, the singer’s publicist condemned the memoir and alleged the singer didn’t approve it.

“Aaron, in the midst of [working on the book], said, ‘I want nothing to do with this’ and stopped,” his publicist told the outlet, adding that releasing the memoir goes “against Aaron’s wishes.”

Aaron, who was 34, died November 5. The cause of death is currently unknown.
