Thirteen states on alert for strong winds, heavy snow as major storm heads east

(NEW YORK) — Thirteen states are on alert for strong winds and heavy snow as a major storm moves east.

A major storm hitting the California coast brought damaging winds, heavy rain and heavy snow. The western storm will bring rounds of showers and thunderstorms from the Bay Area to Los Angeles Wednesday.

The rain will arrive in LA in the morning, with thunderstorms possible in the evening and overnight. Some of the thunderstorms could produce gusty winds and small hail.

Wind gusts at the Mammoth Mountain Ski resort reached 98 miles per hour. In Oakland, wind gusts reached 52 miles per hour and at the San Francisco airport, they reached 44 miles per hour.

Northern Bay area and extreme northern California got the most rain, with some areas reporting more than 3 inches. The highest snowfall total so far was near Mount Shasta, California, where 25 inches fell.

The snow was so heavy on I-80 over Donner Pass, California, that the interstate was temporarily shut down. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible in parts of California through Wednesday night.

Additional 1 to 2 feet of snow is expected in the California mountains in the next 24 to 36 hours. Up to 18 inches of snow are expected in southern California mountains outside of LA and San Diego.

This storm will then cross the Rockies on Thursday and Thursday night with 1 to 2 feet of snow possible there.

On Friday, 47 million people could face severe storms, with damaging winds, tornadoes and huge hail.

On Friday afternoon and evening, the storm system will reemerge over the Plains and will bring a new severe weather outbreak from Iowa and Wisconsin, all the way to Mississippi and Alabama, which were hit with deadly tornadoes last weekend. Cities in the bullseye this Friday will be Des Moines, Iowa; Chicago St. Louis; Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee; Little Rock, Arkansas; and just north of Jackson, Mississippi.

Will Butler releases new song “Willows” with Sister Squares band

Former Arcade Fire member Will Butler has released a new song in collaboration with his frequent live band, Sister Squares.

The track is called “Willows” and is available now via digital outlets.

“‘Willows’ is about leaving the past in the past,” Butler says. “Nostalgia is sweet, but it’s a poison. The scene of the song is someone driving off into the wilderness to meet an old woman — one of the Fates, like in a folk tale. And maybe he wants to be young again, or wants things back the way they used to be. And she says: Anything can happen, for a price.”

Butler announced last March that he’d left Arcade Fire, which he’d played in since 2003 alongside his older brother, frontman Win Butler. Last May, Will released two new solo songs, “A Stranger’s House” and “Nearer to Thee.”

Demi Lovato reportedly “living a very healthy lifestyle” after committing to sobriety

Demi Lovato is reportedly focusing on living a healthy and sober lifestyle following their overdose in 2018.

A source claiming to be close to the singer tells Entertainment Tonight, “Demi is doing great. She’s sober and living a very healthy lifestyle. She’s surrounding herself with like-minded people that want her to stay that way and continue to support her positive choices.”

“Demi goes to therapy, works out, eats clean, and does things that make her happy,” the insider spilled. “She hikes, writes music, and is very in tune with herself in general.”

Demi has made “herself a priority and has a very close-knit support system that she leans on,” per the spy.

Part of the singer’s pack is their boyfriend, Canadian musician Jordan Lutes, aka Jute$. The two have been an item since August 2022. The insider assured, “They’re very in love and just enjoying their time together … Her friends and family think Demi and Jute$ make a good match and couple.”

Jute$ reportedly “wants what’s best for her and everyone sees that.”

Demi sweetly celebrated their boyfriend’s birthday on Tuesday, writing in part, “I couldn’t be more in love with your gorgeous, funny, sexy, talented self. I’ve waited my whole life to find you and I can’t wait to celebrate so many more birthdays together.. you’re a literal dream come true.”

Prior to committing to total sobriety, Demi had been living the “California sober” lifestyle, as explained in their March 2021 documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil.

The singer said back then they cut out everything except alcohol and marijuana, which they’d have in moderation — but they changed their mind a few months later. Demi announced on their Instagram Story that December, “sober sober is the only way to be.”

Cody Johnson + Carrie Underwood have recorded a duet

Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood have just recorded a duet. That’s right, two powerhouse vocalists are going to be on a song together.

This news was casually shared by Cody on the CMT Music Awards Nominee Special on March 27.

“I actually just recorded a duet with her yesterday for my new album coming out,” the “‘Til You Can’t” hitmaker revealed.

“Getting to know her, man, she’s such a pro,” he added. “Everybody that she surrounds herself with are all very professional, as well. I don’t mean this to sound bad, but it’s kind of hard to compete with that.”

Cody, of course, is competing with Carrie for the Video of the Year award at the 2023 CMT Music Awards. The six finalists are Cody’s “Human,” Carrie’s “Hate My Heart,” Blake Shelton‘s “No Body,” HARDY and Lainey Wilson‘s “wait in the truck,” Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown‘s “Thank God,” and Morgan Wallen‘s “You Proof.”

Wham!’s “Careless Whisper” joins YouTube’s billion views club

Wham!‘s massive 1984 hit “Careless Whisper” continues to dominate the music landscape — especially when it comes to YouTube.

That song is now the latest offering to join YouTube’s prestigious billion-views club. Variety reports in 2023 alone its music video was watched 400,000 times on average, every day.

“Careless Whisper,” which was uploaded to the video-sharing platform in October 2009, is now the eighth song from the 1980s to earn over 1 billion views.

The song now joins other hits “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, Cyndi Lauper‘s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” Guns N’ Roses‘ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson, “Every Breath You Take” by the Police, Europe‘s “The Final Countdown” and A-ha‘s “Take on Me.”

“Careless Whisper,” which was written by Andrew Ridgeley and the late George Michael, was released in July 1984 and was featured on Wham!’s Make It Big album. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and is RIAA-certified Platinum.

The duo shot the song’s music video in Miami and tapped Duncan Gibbins as its director. Gibbins also helmed the video for Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

Tom Petty’s family pays tribute to the late Tom Leadon

Tom Petty’s family has paid tribute to the rocker’s former Mudcrutch bandmate Tom Leadon, who passed away March 22 at the age of 71.

Sharing a collage of pictures featuring Petty, Leadon and the rest of the band, Petty’s daughter Adria Petty writes on Instagram, “We are devastated to hear of the passing of Tom Leadon. He was a dear friend of Tom and the fellas in the band and our entire family. He was part of the brotherhood. He was an excellent and accomplished musician and was the reason Tom reformed Mudcrutch, so that the band could enjoy more time and more music together. Tom loved him deeply.”

Petty’s wife, Dana Petty, added, “I am deeply saddened and surprised by this. Tom spent a lot of time staying in our home. He was very sweet with the best memory we’d ever witnessed. He was a unique man. I’m so shocked that he’s gone.”

Will Kelly Clarkson debut new music on ’The Voice’?

With a new album on the horizon, fans want to know when they’ll first get to hear Kelly Clarkson‘s new music. The singer has suggested that might happen sooner than they think.

Kelly recently announced her next album, Chemistry, which she only said will be out “soon.” Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the singer flirted with previewing some new content on The Voice.

“My hope is that yes, we are going to be debuting some new stuff on The Voice,” she said. “I’ve been working on the record for a bit, but I’m now ready to release it.”

She didn’t reveal any potential song titles or when she might perform some of her new material.

The album is rumored to be arriving when Kelly kicks off her chemistry…an intimate night with Kelly Clarkson residency in Las Vegas. The 10-show run starts July 28 at Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Kelly’s last album of all-new material was 2017’s The Meaning of Life. She also released When Christmas Comes Around in 2021 and her Kellyoke EP in 2022.

Speaking of The Voice, Kelly had some kind words for outgoing coach Blake Shelton, who’s been a bastion of the show since its inception. “I kind of want to be the one to kick him out the door, but also I want to hug him while he’s going,” she said.

Kelly also assessed new coach Niall Horan and how he may have forced her back to the drawing board when it comes to winning. “Usually my strategy is, like, I can relate, I’ve been through a show, too,” she said.

Niall also got his start on a reality singing competition as a member of One Direction; Kelly says losing that edge stinks.

AC/DC, Tool share Power Trip teasers; Guns N’ Roses also rumored

The lineup for the apparent Power Trip festival is getting even more stacked.

As previously reported, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica and Iron Maiden all shared videos Tuesday leading to the website PowerTrip.live, which seems to be teasing a new festival from Coachella producers Goldenvoice. Since then, AC/DC and Tool have shared the same videos.

Additionally, Variety reports that Guns N’ Roses will be on the bill. According to Variety, Power Trip will be held in October at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, the same site as Coachella and Goldenvoice’s similarly high-profile Desert Trip festival in 2016, which featured The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters and The Who.

If the teasers hold true, Power Trip will mark Ozzy’s first announced show since he revealed he was retiring from touring earlier this year, as well as AC/DC’s first live performance since 2016. It will also mark the “Back in Black” group’s first show back with vocalist Brian Johnson since the beginning of 2016, when he was forced to leave the tour due to health issues. GN’R’s Axl Rose stepped in for Johnson to finish out the run.

According to the Power Trip website, all will be revealed this Thursday, March 30.

Starbucks’ former CEO denies breaking law after Sen. Sanders accuses company of ‘union busting’

(WASHINGTON) — Starbucks’ former CEO Howard Schultz on Wednesday denied breaking the law in response to sharp criticism from Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who accused the company of “the most aggressive and illegal union busting campaign in the modern history of our country.”

In response to questions from Sanders during a Senate hearing, Schultz affirmed the right of workers to choose whether to unionize and defended the company’s actions.

Starbucks “has not broken the law,” Schultz said. “Let me set the tone for this very early on.”

Schultz, who served as Starbucks CEO for over 20 years across three stints, said Starbucks has negotiated in “good faith” with employees as they’ve sought to unionize and obtain collective benefits.

More than a dozen decisions from federal officials have found that the company violated labor law in its response to a wave of union campaigns at its stores, according to the National Labor Relations Board, a federal agency.

Roughly 290 of almost 9,000 company-owned stores in the U.S. have voted to unionize. However, workers have yet to sign a union contract at a single location.

Earlier this month, an administrative judge ruled that Starbucks had committed “egregious and widespread misconduct” in its effort to prevent unionization at some of its stores.

The judge, Michael A. Rosas, mandated the company reinstate several workers and Schultz read a notice to employees, among other remedies.

More than 500 formal allegations of labor law violations have been filed against Starbucks with regional offices of the NLRB, the agency said this month.

In all, 13 decisions have ordered remedies for unfair labor practices committed by Starbucks, including the reinstatement of 22 employees, the NLRB said. Some of those decisions have been appealed, the agency added.

Schultz characterized the findings against Starbucks as “allegations,” adding that the company is “confident that those allegations will be proven false.”

Workers United, the labor organization organizing Starbucks workers, said in a statement that it welcomed the Senate hearing as a venue for Schultz to face accountability for his response to the union campaign.

“We’re hopeful for change,” a Workers United spokesperson said. “We’re hopeful that this hearing moves the needle forward for baristas and workers all across the country.”

“We look forward to Howard Schultz being held accountable for his actions and being forced to answer to his unprecedented union-busting campaign under oath,” the spokesperson added.

Starbucks workers achieved an unprecedented wave of unionization at the company last year but the pace of union victories fell significantly over the course of last year.

Over the first half of 2022, the National Labor Relations Board received union election petitions from an average of 47 Starbucks stores per month; but over five months ending in November, that election rate dwindled to 11 stores per month, according to data from the NLRB.

Tyler, the Creator says “Sorry Not Sorry” in second video this week

Tyler, the Creator is hyping the upcoming release of Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale with his new video for “Sorry Not Sorry.”

Released Wednesday, the self-directed visual finds the rapper and iterations of him from previous albums offering both honest and satirical apologies to a slew of individuals in the crowd. Tyler battles his different alter egos and ultimately ends the video beating one of them to death.

“Sorry Not Sorry” come days after the release of “Dogtooth” and its accompanying video. Both tracks will appear on Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale, which will feature songs that didn’t make it onto the original album. The project is due out Friday.
