Florence + The Machine have released “One of the Greats” from their new album, Everybody Scream. That’s not subjective — that’s the actual name of the song.

Florence Welch explains in a statement that the song is “sort of a long poem about the cost of greatness: Who gets to decide what that is? Why do I even want it?”

In the song, Welch sings about literally coming back from the dead to “show you what it takes/ To become one of the greats.” She also describes her ambivalence about fame, singing, “Got everything I thought I wanted and cried hungover in a hotel closet.”

Welch says in the statement, “I feel like I die a little bit every time I make a record. … Yet I always dig myself up to try again, always trying to please that one person who doesn’t like it, or finally feel like I made something perfect and I can rest.”

She notes, “Early in my career, I was consistently ridiculed and derided for the bigness of my expression. I was thrust into the spotlight but also told again and again I didn’t deserve it, or that because it wasn’t to their taste it wasn’t good. So maybe this is a 15-year outpouring of frustration. But also, a lot of the lines I just left in because I thought they were funny.”

Among those funny lines: “It must be nice to be a man and make boring music just because you can.”

Welch co-wrote the song with Mark Bowen of fellow U.K. rockers IDLES; it was produced by Aaron Dessner. Welch says, “I wanted it to feel like you were disintegrating into nothing at the end. Which is sometimes what the creative process feels to me.”

Everybody Scream is out Oct. 31.

Darius Rucker is joining forces with R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and The Black Crowes‘ former drummer Steve Gorman for a new supergroup, Howl Owl Howl.

The group formed in 2021 out of a casual jam session between the three longtime friends, with a press release noting that session turned into “something unique.” As for the sound, Howl Owl Howl “fuses organic roots rock with an open-minded alternative flair, matching a fluid, feel-oriented rhythm section to the barrel-chested vocal rasp of an iconic frontman.”

“It feels great to be singing with a rock band again. It’s like buddies getting together, but also getting to play with your idols,” Darius shares. “The stuff we’re writing is so different than anything I’ve tried to do before.”

Mills adds, “You never can explain band chemistry. We all like each other. And we all admire each other musically. All those things come together and if it weren’t fun, we wouldn’t be doing it.”

Music fans will get their first experience of Howl Owl Howl when they release their debut track, “My Cologne,” on Oct. 31.

They are also planning to hit the road for the nine-date Howl Owl Howl tour starting Nov. 3 in Indianapolis. The tour wraps Nov. 15 in Athens, Georgia, which is the birthplace of R.E.M. A complete list of dates can be found at howlowlhowl.com.

Of course, Darius’ band, Hootie & the Blowfish, currently has a #3 country hit with Scotty McCreery and “Bottle Rockets,” which features the band singing their 1994 smash “Hold My Hand.”

Clipse have been tapped as headliners for the 2025 Pepsi Philly Eats Fest, an event celebrating the city’s best bites. They will take the stage as part of a lineup featuring Ari Lennox and Philly’s own Freeway, as well as appearances from members of the Eagles franchise.

Pepsi Philly Eats Fest is slated to take place at Eakins Oval on Oct. 4 and serves as Clipse’s thank-you to Philly, one of the cities that has supported them since the start of their career.

“Philly was one of the first cities outside our own to show us real love when we were coming up, and we’ve never forgotten that,” Pusha T and No Malice said in a press release. “The energy is unmatched, from the music to the food to the people. That’s why we’re excited to be part of Pepsi Philly Eats Fest, celebrating the flavors and fans that make this city special.”

The event will follow Clipse’s history-making moment at the Vatican for the Grace of the World concert, where they became the first rappers to perform at the location. They took the stage alongside John Legend and an orchestra for a live rendition of “The Birds Don’t Sing” off their latest album, Let God Sort Em Out.

Rolling Stone is marking the 50th anniversary of Queen’s iconic song “Bohemian Rhapsody” with a special interview with the band’s Brian May and Roger Taylor. The duo talk about the beginnings of the song, and even touch on what, if anything, Freddie Mercury is singing about.

Regarding their first impressions of the song, Taylor notes, “We thought, ‘Well, this is kind of ridiculous, so let’s go.’ We really enjoyed the silliness of it.” He adds that Mercury wrote “a fairly intense, ruminative song. And then we put all these amazingly daft bits in the middle.”

“So many people have been wondering, ‘What’s the secret meaning?'” he shares. “I’m not sure there is one.”

But the band’s manager, John Reid, doesn’t agree and seems to think Mercury was singing about his sexuality.

“I think that’s the key to it,” Reid says, “and a little bit of self-doubt, and the fact that he could never be that open to his parents.”

Elsewhere in the article, May and Taylor discuss Queen’s future, revealing they’ve tried to make music with current frontman Adam Lambert.

“Nothing really materialized so far,” May tells Rolling Stone. “Some things are meant to be and some things are not.”

But even without new music, Taylor says, “I don’t think we’re done.” He insists they won’t do a farewell tour “’cause it never is, is it?”

And it sounds like Queen’s future may include a Las Vegas residency some day.

“ I’m very keen on the Sphere. It’s got my mind working,” May says. “I sat there watching the Eagles, thinking, ‘We should do this. The stuff that we could bring to this would be stupendous.’ So, yeah, I would like to do it. We’re having conversations.”

Madonna is a big David Bowie fan. In fact, when Bowie was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, she accepted the honor on his behalf and gave a speech about how seeing Bowie in concert when she was 15 years old changed her life.

That’s why Madonna says she got emotional when she visited the branch of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum where Bowie’s archives are housed. The Queen of Pop writes on her Instagram Story, “The first concert I ever saw was in high school. David Bowie was playing in Detroit. He blew my mind.”

She goes on to note that while at the museum, “They brought out the very costume he wore onstage when I first saw him perform. It was such a life-changing experience. I almost started crying.”

She included a photo of the outfit, which Bowie wore on his Diamond Dogs tour: a white suit, blue-and-white sweater, red shoes, yellow socks and red suspenders.

Madonna also posted photos of herself visiting the museum and looking at additional Bowie items, along with her manager, Guy Oseary, and her boyfriend, Akeem Morris.
