311 promises “best-looking and best-sounding tour ever” for return to live stage

311 is bursting from the Hive and returning to the road.

After keeping fans entertained with their Live from the Hive streaming series over the past year, the “Down” rockers are launching a real-life tour this Saturday in Camden, New Jersey. As frontman Nick Hexum tells ABC Audio, he reckons the outing will be 311’s “best-looking and best-sounding tour ever.”

“We keep evolving our live production to have really cool visuals and keep making the sound better,” Hexum says. “There’s just always little ways where you can tweak and evolve.”

While they were sidelined from the road, 311’s streaming shows allowed Hexum to rediscover a few deep cuts in the band’s catalog. Between that and not having a new album to promote, Hexum predicts some set list experimentation on this tour.

“The best way to keep the shows fresh is to rotate more different songs, special things that people will be really excited and glad they were there for, and more variation from night-to-night,” he says.

311 will also be taking an in-person/virtual hybrid approach to the tour, as select shows will stream live online, as well.

“There’s plenty of people who for whatever reason can’t travel, can’t go to a show,” Hexum says. “So to be able to actively include them in our community, that feels really good.”

Hexum gives a special shout-out to the 311 road crew, which was able to master the technology needed for streaming.

“It was like telling them, ‘OK, quick, learn a new language,'” Hexum says. “They did it very well, so now we see that this is just something that can be a regular part of what we do.”

Waiting on Some News: Rolling Stones hint at ‘Tattoo You’ reissue announcement

UMe

Last month, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood told The Times of London that he and Mick Jagger had been working on tracks that will be featured on an upcoming reissue of the band’s 1981 album, Tattoo You, and now it appears that details of that release will be announced on Thursday.

The Rolling Stones have posted a somewhat cryptic message on their social media sites that features a poster with cartoonish drawings labeled with various songs titles from the album, along with a note that reads, “‘Tattoo You’ 2021 Flash Sale…August 19th, 2PM BST/9AM EST…RSVP Now!…Get Ready to Be ReInked.”

The message is captioned, “Which would you get? Thursday 2pm BST/9am EST,” and includes a link to a webpage that let’s fans sign up for The Stones’ mailing list “to be the first for all future news & updates!” and asks for a first name and an email address.

So, judging by the posts, it looks like The Rolling Stones plan to announce official information about a 40th anniversary Tattoo You reissue at 9 a.m. ET tomorrow.

Tattoo You was released on August 24, 1981, and featured such hits as “Start Me Up,” “Waiting on a Friend” and “Hang Fire.” It spent nine straight weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and went on to sell over 4 million copies in the U.S.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine reflects on his Metallica exit: “I don’t know that we could’ve survived”

Chiaki Nozu/WireImage

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine discusses his exit from Metallica in a new trailer for his upcoming episode of Gibson TV’s Icons series.

Mustaine, of course, was the original lead guitarist of Metallica before he was fired from the band in 1983 and replaced by Kirk Hammett.

In the Icons trailer, which is streaming now on YouTube, Mustaine shares that he was “destined” to leave Metallica.

“The fact that there was just so much talent and so much personality between the four of us, I don’t know that we could’ve survived,” Mustaine says. “There was destined to be some kind of an explosion at some point.”

Things would work out alright for Mustaine, as he went on to create Megadeth after his dismissal from Metallica. Still, he recalls going through a lot of “soul-searching” on his long bus ride home after getting sacked.

“Did I want to play guitar, did I want to keep doing this, what am I gonna go?” Mustaine recalls thinking. “I got it! I’m gonna make a band that’s more metal than Metallica.”

Mustaine’s Icons episode premieres this Thursday, August 19, at 1 p.m. ET via the Gibson TV YouTube channel.

Earlier this year, Mustaine announced a new line of signature guitars with Gibson.

Jimmie Allen teases unreleased “Big in a Small Town,” the theme song to Netflix’s upcoming ‘Titletown High’

Connie Chronuk/ABC

Jimmie Allen has a new creative project in the works. The singer will serve as executive music producer for an upcoming Netflix series, Titletown High, a sports reality show that follows the ups and downs of a high school football team.

The theme song for the show is Jimmie’s unreleased “Big in a Small Town,” a track that he says speaks to his own roots and teenage memories.

“I grew up in a small town. Whether it’s football or a dream you have, everything you do in a small town is a big thing,” Jimmie explains in a teaser clip he posted to social media this week.

“Everybody can relate to going to school. Being in a relationship. Playing football. Everything is the end of the world or the start of the world,” Jimmie goes on to reflect. “So I think people connect to the realness of it.”

Titletown High will debut on Netflix on August 27.

New illustrated Jimi Hendrix book written for young readers due out in October

Neal Porter Books/Holiday House

A new illustrated biographical book about the late Jimi Hendrix geared toward young readers aged 7 to 11 will be published on October 19.

Song for Jimi: The Story of Guitar Legend Jimi Hendrix is a 56-page book that’s described as “a lyrical account” of Hendrix’s life.

Written by author Charles R. Smith Jr., the book tells Hendrix’s story through a series of rhythmic verses, and is enhanced by the psychedelic artwork of TIME art director Edel Rodriguez. Song for Jimi includes sections focusing on Hendrix’s turbulent childhood, his historic performances at the Monterey Pop and Woodstock festival, and more, while looking at the influential musician’s struggles as he forged an uncompromising path through his life.

“I wanted to celebrate a unique individual who inspired me,” writes Smith, who became a passionate fan of Hendrix while he attending art school. As the school’s youngest and only Black student, Smith says he felt a kinship with Jimi as an outsider. The author is hoping the book inspires other young creative people, and also helps introduce Hendrix’s music to new fans.

Listen to new Bastille song, “Thelma + Louise”

Credit: Sarah Louise Bennett

Bastille has released a new song called “Thelma + Louise.”

As its title suggests, “Thelma + Louise” was inspired by the iconic 1991 film starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. It’s even accompanied by a video that begins with frontman Dan Smith sitting in the front seat of a Ford Thurderbird convertible, the same car that — spoiler alert for a 30 year-old movie — Thelma and Louise famously drive off the rim of the Grand Canyon.

You can watch the “Thelma + Louise” video streaming now on YouTube.

“Thelma + Louise” is the third new Bastille song of 2021, following “Distorted Light Beam” and “Give Me the Future.”

Meanwhile, you can catch Bastille perform on the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series, airing August 23 on ABC.

Fat Joe welcomes NBA stars Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier to the New York Knicks

Dustin Satloff/Getty Images

Lifelong New York Knicks fan Fat Joe led the NBA team’s welcoming committee Tuesday as they introduced their new free agent acquisitions: former Boston Celtics players Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier.

The Terror Squad founder wore Kemba’s number eight Knicks jersey as he appeared with them at Madison Square Garden. Native New Yorker Joe grew up loving the Knicks, and is often courtside at home games, sitting near the ultimate Knicks fans, Spike Lee. In March, he performed at halftime of a game against Drake’s favorite team, the Toronto Raptors.

The Knicks made the playoffs for the first time in eight years this season, and the “Lean Back “rapper has high expectations for next season.

“The DNA of the Knicks, with Julius [Randle], RJ [Barrett] and D. Rose [Derrick Rose] is gonna be exciting,” Joe said in a team video.

“We got Fournier to knock down some shots,” he added. “I mean, we ready.”

Joe has always felt playing for the Knicks was special.

“You can come here, to the greatest city on Earth, under the brightest lights, in the greatest arena on Earth, and kick some butt and be the man,” he told the New York Times in 2012. “It’s like Frank Sinatra sang: If you make it here, you make it anywhere, baby. If you’re the king of this team right here, you’re the biggest person on Earth; I don’t care what anyone says.”
