Lee Brice‘s latest single “Soul” finds him experimenting with a pop-leaning sound, and he admits he was a bit hesitant to release it.

“It’s funny, I was worried a little bit. I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to put it out as a single because I don’t know if my country music listeners are going to dive into it,'” he explains of his mindset about the catchy tune that boasts steamy lyrics like “Your body’s got me weak/You’re Mozart in the sheets/You make a sinner out of me/Imma need a priest.”

Despite his hesitancy, Lee took the leap of faith and released the single to country radio. It’s clear his instincts were correct, as he got approval from an unlikely source – his Uncle Al, who lives in a small rural town in South Carolina.

“I get a call from my Uncle Al from New Zion, South Carolina, ‘hey Lee, it’s your Uncle Al.’ I’m like, ‘Well hey Uncle Al,’ [he] never call me for anything ever in his whole life. ‘Man, I heard ‘Soul’…I’m telling you right now…it’s going to be your bad, biggest number one bud,'” the singer recalls of his uncle’s positive reaction. “I’m like, well, if he’s into it, I think I’m OK with the country music listeners.'”

“Soul” follows Lee’s latest #1 hit, “Memory I Don’t Mess With,” which topped the charts in 2021.

Students attending the University of Missouri’s School of Music will now be able to gather in Sheryl Crow Hall.

The university, which is Sheryl’s alma mater, has named a choral performance and rehearsal hall located inside the school’s Music Center after the Grammy winner, according to a Facebook post.

As the Columbia Missourian reports, Sheryl graduated from the University of Missouri in 1984 with a degree in music education, and later received an honorary doctorate from the school in 2011.  The Hall was named in her honor because of her support for the building’s fundraising campaign, and the benefit concert she did for the cause in 2015.

Julia Gaines, the School of Music’s director, tells the publication that Sheryl Crow Hall will be used as a performance space, and also will host history lectures, and classes in conducting, chorus and more.  It’s also the main space used by the public after performances and events, which is another reason they named the space after Sheryl.

The school had hoped to unveil the hall in September when Sheryl headlined the local Roots N Blues Festival, but COVID-19 policies prevented her from visiting.

Sheryl is one of many performers set to perform at Brandi Carlile‘s Girls Just Wanna Weekend destination festival in Mexico’s Riviera Maya early next month, and so far, the event appears to be proceeding as scheduled.  On February 11, she’ll celebrate her 60th birthday.

Like many who grew up in the ’80s, Back to the Future was the film that made people very excited about the years ahead.  For Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, he says the movie did way more than that — it’s the reason his band exists.

He appeared Tuesday on The Kelly Clarkson Show and said it was a life changing moment when he watched Michael J. Fox — who played Marty McFly in the franchise — jump on stage to perform a Chuck Berry song.

“That’s what made me want to be in a band, you know? That scene,” Chris revealed before poking fun at his seemingly old age.  When gesturing to those in the audience, he noted a good handful of those watching are “probably too young to remember that bit.”

“I grew up in real farmland of England, before the internet,” the British singer explained, adding he would glom onto any movie or TV show that played a catchy tune.  “The first thing I ever recorded was — there was a show called The A-Team — and I had a cassette recorder and held it against the TV to record the theme tune.”

The conversation was initially sparked by him and Kelly bonding over their love of covering other artists’ songs.  He then revealed one of his favorite memories is playing a cover — because of who joined him on stage.

“Michael J. Fox came [on stage] and played two songs from Back to the Future with us in MetLife Stadium,” he grinned of the 2016 memory. “Him coming to play ‘Johnny B. Goode’ and stuff was wonderful.”

Kane’s fellow country stars and Bulldogs fans including Thomas Rhett, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean were among those who took to social media to celebrate the team’s win. “Taking a break from my break from social media to say GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Thomas writes. “Wow. Cardi B goes to trial in lawsuit against blogger who accused her of contracting an STD

Cardi B‘s libel lawsuit against a blogger who accused her of contracting a sexually transmitted disease began Monday in federal court in Atlanta.

The “Up” rapper claims that Latasha Kebe produced dozens of YouTube videos and social media posts that spread false claims about her, including that she contracted herpes, according to Billboard. Her attorneys say that Kebe created a “malicious campaign” to damage her reputation by spreading rumors of sexually transmitted diseases and other falsehoods.

Kebe has denied the accusations, and countersued, claiming that Cardi B encouraged her fans to harass her on social media. A judge tossed out Kebe’s counter lawsuit last year, saying there was “no evidence” that the rapper had harassed her. Kebe, who goes by the name Tasha K, publishes videos on her YouTube channel, “unWinewithTashaK.”

Cardi filed the lawsuit in 2019, saying that Kebe uploaded more than 38 videos and numerous social media post that referenced her. Court documents claim that in one post, Kebe stated that the 29-year-old entertainer “f***** herself with beer bottles on f****** stripper stages.”

The trial is expected to run for at least two weeks, and it is not known if Cardi will take the witness stand.

Elvis Costello won’t perform “Oliver’s Army” live anymore; asks radio stations to stop playing song

Elvis Costello won’t perform “Oliver’s Army” live anymore; asks radio stations to stop playing song
Tabatha Fireman/Redferns

Elvis Costello has announced that he’ll no longer perform his biggest U.K. hit, 1979’s “Oliver’s Army,” because the song contains a racial slur, and he’s also asking radio stations to stop playing the track.

Costello wrote “Oliver’s Army” about the historic violent conflicts in Northern Ireland, and the song includes the lyric, “Only takes one itchy trigger/ One more widow, one less white [n-word],” a reference to what British soldiers were called by some who opposed U.K. rule in the area.

“That’s what my grandfather was called in the British army — it’s historically a fact,” Elvis tells U.K. newspaper The Telegraph. “But people hear that word…and accuse me of something that I didn’t intend.”

While it wasn’t a hit in the U.S., “Oliver’s Army” is Costello’s highest-charting song in his home country, peaking at #2 on the U.K. singles tally. It appeared on Armed Forces, Elvis Costello’s 1979 studio album with his then-backing group The Attractions.

The tune was played unedited for many years on the radio, but eventually many stations began bleeping the slur.

Costello told The Telegraph that he feels that radio stations that bleep the word are “making it worse…[b]ecause they’re highlighting it then.” He adds, “Just don’t play the record!”

News of Costello retiring “Oliver’s Army” comes a few months after reports that The Rolling Stones had decided to stop performing their chart-topping 1971 hit “Brown Sugar” because of the song’s potentially racially and culturally insensitive subject matter and lyrics.

Costello and his longtime backing band The Imposters will be releasing a new studio album called The Boy Named If this Friday.
