Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell has been busy this year touring with his own band The Dirty Knobs, whose second album, External Combustion, was released in March.

Since Tom Petty‘s unexpected death at age 67 in October 2017, Campbell hasn’t played with most of his Heartbreakers band mates, but would he consider eventually doing a reunion project or tour with the guys? In a recent interview with ABC Audio, the 72-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer admitted that he had mixed feelings about that.

“I go back and forth. I’m not really feeling it right now,” Campbell said. “I’m still grieving, and I still feel uncomfortable with the idea of getting all the guys in a room…and starting a song and Tom’s not there. I don’t know if I want to feel that grief at this moment.”

Mike also noted that he was busy with The Dirty Knobs now and he “wouldn’t want to distract from [that].”

Campbell added that he wouldn’t absolutely say “no” to some kind of reunion, “but right now it doesn’t look like it.”

He continued, “I don’t want to mess with the past…I’m really proud of our legacy, and I don’t want to cheapen it by going out with some…homogenized version of what it was. And without Tom, I don’t care who’s singing, it wouldn’t be the same.”

Campbell also pointed out that The Dirty Knobs have been honoring Petty by playing several of Tom’s songs at their concerts this year.

“[T]hat’s where I get that out of my system,” he maintained.

The Dirty Knobs’ upcoming 2022 tour schedule includes a bunch of headlining shows, some festivals, four gigs opening for Gov’t Mule in early October, and seven concerts in October and November supporting The Who.

Anthrax officially turned 40 in 2021, but the thrash metallers are finally getting to properly celebrate the milestone on a tour kicking off Tuesday in Phoenix.

As guitarist Scott Ian tells ABC Audio, he and his bandmates had plans to mark the big 4-0 with a tour last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way.

“We knew we would get to do a tour eventually and go out and blow up our 40th like it needs to be, it just so happens we’re doing it in our 41st year,” Ian shares. “But we very much consider it our 40th anniversary celebration.”

That celebration will include a set list with “some surprises,” as well as the “biggest production” in Anthrax’s history as a headliner.

“Even bigger than when we were out on Persistence of Time, which was pretty big production for 1990, ’91,” Ian says.

Most of all, though, Ian’s pumped for the tour’s bill, which also includes Black Label Society and Hatebreed.

“I think us and Black Label and Hatebreed is a super exciting night out,” Ian says. “That gets me excited as a fan. I see the poster and I see the names and the logos and I’m, like, ‘F***, this is awesome!'”

The tour also marks the first time Anthrax and BLS have toured together, though Ian and company did open for Ozzy Osbourne during a fresh-faced Zakk Wylde‘s first tour as the guitarist for the Prince of Darkness back in 1988.

In those last 34 years, both Ian and Wylde have been cranking out the heaviest of riffs while also growing two of metal’s most famous beards.

“I don’t know that [Wylde] had any idea he was gonna become the guy that eventually I would have beard envy of,” Ian laughs.

Collective Soul’s Ed Roland calls ‘Twilight’ soundtrack inclusion a “blessing”: “It was really cool”

Before Stranger Things, there was another pop culture phenomenon that helped introduce rock and alternative music to younger audiences. We’re, of course, talking about Twilight.

The soundtracks for the hit vampire romance franchise, which helped launch the careers of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, became an unlikely haven for alternative artists in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The first film’s soundtrack, released in 2008, featured Muse, Linkin Park, Paramore and Perry Farrell as well as the Collective Soul song “Tremble for My Beloved.”

Speaking with ABC Audio, Collective Soul frontman Ed Roland said he and his bandmates had “no concept” at the time of what Twilight was or what it would become.

“We started hearing about it, it wasn’t a book that I read,” Roland recalls. “I saw the movie, of course.”

While many of the songs on the Twilight soundtrack had been recently released or were recorded specifically for the film, “Tremble for My Beloved” was nine years old at that point, having originally appeared on Collective Soul’s 1999 album, Dosage. That Twilight was able to give “Tremble for My Beloved” a second life nearly a decade later, Roland thinks, was a “blessing.”

“It was really cool that…you could something that’s dated 10 years back but still could relate to teenagers at that time, and someone thought it cool enough to put in the movie,” Roland says.

Collective Soul will release a new album, Vibrating, on August 12. It includes the single “All Our Pieces.”

DaBaby’s credit was removed from the track following his Rolling Loud rant in 2021 that critics deemed homophobic.

The singer shared a photo to her Instagram and fans say the “Sex Goddess” ink on her bum looks like a temporary tattoo — or a sticker. Speaking of Doja, Post Malone released the “I Like You (A Happier Song)” music video. He winds up getting sucked into his painting and meets Doja in a grassy field.

Keke Palmer addressed a tweet over the weekend that compared her to fellow actress Zendaya, and ignited a discussion over her career and popularity.

On Saturday, Aiyana N. Ishmael, an editorial assistant at Teen Vogue, tweeted her confusion over remarks about Palmer’s “breakout” success in Nope, Jordan Peele‘s latest directorial venture.

“It’s so interesting seeing the conversation around Keke Palmer having her breakout or superstar moment and it’s wild we live in different worlds because in my household Keke been a star for forever,” Ishmael wrote. “Akeelah & The Bee was my dad’s favorite movie it went triple platinum in my home.”

Another Twitter user then quoted Ishmael’s tweet, writing, “I’d like someone to do a deep-drive [sic] on the similarities and differences between Keke Palmer and Zendaya’s careers. This may be one of the clearest examples of how colorism plays out in Hollywood. They were both child-stars, but their mainstream popularity is very different.”

On Sunday, Palmer addressed the latter tweet on Twitter.

Without mentioning Euphoria and Spider-Man star Zendaya, Palmer gave a brief summary of her own numerous film credits and career achievements, adding that she had “been a leading lady” since childhood.

“A great example of colorism is to believe I can be compared to anyone,” she wrote. “I’m the youngest talk show host ever. The first Black woman to star in her own show on Nickelodeon, & the youngest & first Black Cinderella on broadway. I’m an incomparable talent. Baby, THIS, is Keke Palmer.”

“I’ve been a leading lady since I was 11 years old,” she continued. “I have 100+ credits, and currently starring in an original screenplay that’s the number one film at the box office #NOPE. I’ve had a blessed career thus far, I couldn’t ask for more but God continues to surprise me.”

Bob Rafelson, the director, producer and writer best known for co-creating The Monkees TV series and helming the 1970 film Five Easy Pieces, “died peacefully, surrounded by his family” Saturday evening at his home in Aspen, Colorado, his former personal assistant, Jolene Wolff, tells Variety.

In 1965, Rafelson teamed up with fellow aspiring filmmaker Bert Schneider — who died in 2011 — to form the Raybert Productions company, whose first project was a comedy show that followed a fabricated rock group seemingly modeled on The Beatles. The series, which ran from 1966 to 1968, was initially a huge success, as were several of the albums that the band created for the show released.

In 1968, Rafelson directed and co-wrote, with Jack Nicholson, the movie Head, which starred The Monkees. Raybert Productions also produced the classic 1969 counterculture film Easy Rider.

Rafelson directed, co-wrote and co-produced Five Easy Pieces, which starred Nicholson and scored four Oscar nominations.

Rafelson also co-wrote and/or directed a number of other films starring Nicholson, including 1972’s The King of Marvin Gardens and 1981’s The Postman Always Rings Twice.

In addition, he directed the music video for Lionel Richie‘s 1983 hit “All Night Long (All Night).”

Monkees member Micky Dolenz paid homage to Rafelson in a Facebook post that reads in part, “One day in the spring of 1966, I cut my classes in architecture at LA Trade Tech to take an audition for a new TV show called, The Monkees … Needless-to-say, I got the part and it completely altered my life…Regrettably, Bob passed away last night after a long illness but I did get a chance to send him a message telling him how eternally grateful I was that he saw something in me.”
