The Year in Entertainment 2023: “Barbenheimer” shakes up the box office

Warner Bros. Pictures – Universal

It was a movie date night nobody could have predicted that proved that opposites attract.

On July 21, moviegoers had a choice: On one hand, there was Greta Gerwig‘s cotton candy-colored comedy Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as America’s most famous doll come to life, and on the other, acclaimed director Christopher Nolan‘s R-rated nuclear-age drama Oppenheimer.

In the end, movie fans chose both and “Barbenheimer” was born.

Barbie, which also starred Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as a host of other Barbies and Kens — including Issa Rae and Dua Lipa, and Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir became the biggest movie of the year, raking in more than $1.4 billion worldwide and spawning a hit soundtrack to boot.

Oppenheimer went on to gross more than $951 million worldwide — making it the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, after only 2019’s Oscar-winning Joker.

The study of the father of the atomic bomb, Robert J. Oppenheimer, also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time and the biggest moneymaker about World War II.

What’s more, Oppenheimer‘s star-filled cast, including Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. as his political foe Lewis Strauss, are likely a lock come Oscar nominations.

Robbie, who also produced Barbie, recently looked back at the phenomenon that became known as “Barbenheimer,” describing what happened behind the scenes as the movies were set on a release day collision course.

In an Actors on Actors interview for Variety, she revealed one of the producers for Nolan’s nuclear age drama suggested she shift Barbie‘s theatrical release plans. “If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date … We’re not moving,'” she recalled with a smile, adding she thought the movies were “a perfect double billing.”

And the rest, as they say, was history.

Kevin Spacey appears in ‘House of Cards’ character in viral post with Tucker Carlson

Netflix/David Giesbrecht

In a post he dropped online on Christmas Eve, conservative commentator Tucker Carlson spoke about a potential “dark horse” presidential candidate who could shake up the 2024 election.

He then introduced that “dark horse:” Frank Underwood, the character Kevin Spacey played on House of Cards. Spacey didn’t break character in the appearance, but referenced his real-life alter-ego’s career when he told former Fox News host Carlson, “We both got canned by our networks.”

You may recall that Spacey’s run as Underwood on the Netflix show ended when he became was accused of sexual assault, though he has appeared as the character online a few times since then. He was subsequently exonerated.

In Carlson’s post, Spacey-as-Underwood went on to say, “I think I have a long and very solid relationship with the public and that is a bond that has never been broken.”

Carlson then asked Underwood, “Do you watch Netflix anymore?” to which he replied, “Probably as much as you watch Fox.” “Fair!” Carlson said with a laugh.

Tucker also said he’d “sleep on” a decision to be Underwood’s “running mate” for the next election.

Whatever the motivation for the unlikely team-up, it was an undeniably viral one: It’s received more than 37 million views on X, formerly Twitter, since it was first posted on December 24.

The Rock flashes back to the ’90s with Christmas post

ABC/Randy Holmes

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson busted out some ’90s Rock to wish his Instagram followers a Merry Christmas on Monday. No, not rock music from the ’90s, but a full-on cosplay of himself from an infamous 1990s photo.

Sporting a fanny pack, a mullet wig on his normally smooth head, a black turtleneck and a gold chain, Johnson crooned “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),” occasionally changing the lyrics to fit his fit.

He even took the time to pause the song and pat his fanny pack — in case you missed it — before finishing the tune and blowing a kiss to the camera.

‘Aquaman’ sequel sinks with weak $40 million opening

Warner Bros. Pictures

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom debuted at #1 over the four-day holiday weekend. However, its $40 million opening wasn’t superheroic.

Its 2018 original, also starring Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis, opened with $67 million on its way to more than $1.1 billion. But the sequel, which cost more than $200 million to make, won’t come close to that high water mark, most prognosticators agree. It’s Warner Bros. Discovery’s fourth under-performing superhero movie of the year, following The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Blue Beetle.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom makrs the studio’s last superhero flick before the much-anticipated James Gunn/Peter Safran reboot of the studios’ comic properties.

However, Warner Bros. had sweeter news from Wonka, which came in second for the weekend with $28 million. The prequel, starring Timothée Chalamet as the magical chocolate maker, has made nearly $255 million to date.

The animated film Migration took third place with $17.5 million, while Sony’s romantic comedy Anyone but You debuted in fourth place, collecting $8 million. The Indian action film Salaar Part 1 managed to snag fifth place, with $6.9 million over the four-day span, according to Deadline.

Watch ‘A Christmas Story’ star Peter Billingsley make the case that ‘Die Hard’ is a Christmas movie

Warner Bros. Pictures/Eric Charbonneau

Peter Billingsley knows a little something about holiday movies — after all, he appeared in the holiday classic Elf and played Ralphie in the timeless A Christmas Story

So when he makes the case that Die Hard is definitively a Christmas movie, people should listen — and that’s just what Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont did as Billingsley made his case in an interview with the Speed director that was posted to Instagram.

“It opens with RUN-DMC‘s ‘Christmas in Hollis’, a great Christmas song, in the limousine,” Billingsley begins, to which de Bont agrees.

“You have the iconic ‘Ho-Ho-Ho’ moment when he [Bruce Willis‘ John McClane] decorates the dead body, puts it in an elevator,” the actor and Iron Man co-producer continues.

“Production design put Santas everywhere. Its central location is a Christmas party … The film ends with the song ‘Let It Snow,’ it’s the end credits song,” Billingsley adds.

He closes by saying, “But I’ll leave you with this: I think it embodies the themes of Christmas: of acceptance, forgiveness, love and family.”

At this point, de Bont smiles and agrees: “Okay, I’m sold now.”

For the record, millions of fans may disagree, but back in 2018, during his Comedy Central roast, Willis, emphatically joked, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie! It’s a g****** Bruce Willis movie!”

Charlie Sheen allegedly assaulted by female neighbor

Amanda Edwards/Getty Images

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept confirmed to ABC News Friday that there was an arrest made on December 20, after Charlie Sheen was allegedly assaulted by his neighbor.

The department is offering limited details, but sources confirm that deputies responded to Sheen’s home after he claimed his neighbor, identified by LASD as Electra Shrock, forced her way inside his home and allegedly attacked him.

TMZ was the first to report details of the incident, saying the suspect tried to “strangle” the former Two and a Half Men star.

The department did confirm there was a struggle of some kind, and deputies identified Sheen as a victim of assault, adding that medical aid was called, but there were no serious injuries.

The two neighbors allegedly have a history of disagreements.

Shrock was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, force likely to create great bodily injury, and residential burglary. She is due in court later on December 22.

Eric Stonestreet says if asked, he’d succeed Tim Allen as Santa Claus

Disney+

Modern Family veteran Eric Stonestreet can be seen as the Mad Santa in the second season of the Disney+ series The Santa Clauses. And while Tim Allen has played Scott Calvin/Santa Claus for more than 30 years, Stonestreet tells ABC Audio he’d grab the bag if offered.

Well, listen, I love playing in this world. And Tim Allen is Santa Claus for so many of us and will always be Santa Claus,” the actor says.

“But if [showrunner] Jack [Burditt], Disney and Tim or anyone asked if I was interested, my answer will always be yes to be in this world some way or somehow.”

Both seasons of The Santa Clauses are now streaming on Disney+, as are Allen’s three Santa Clause films.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Mark Wahlberg action comedy ‘The Family Plan’ births record for Apple TV+, and more

Apple TV+

The December 15 premiere of Apple TV+’s The Family Plan, starring Mark Wahlberg, debuted with the most views for a movie on the streaming service and now stands as the most-viewed movie in Apple TV+ history, the streamer has announced.

The film has Wahlberg playing an assassin-turned suburban dad’s past catching up with him, so he takes his wife (Mission: Impossible player Michelle Monaghan) and their kids on the run, under the guise of a family road trip to Vegas.

As Apple TV+ closes out the year, its Jennifer Aniston/Reese Witherspoon-led The Morning Show, which kicked off a third season in September, saw a 20% audience increase over season 2.

The streamer’s Godzilla-co-starring series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters debuted as the #1 first season drama on Apple TV in November, while Lessons in Chemistry, starring Brie Larson, became the #1 limited series on Apple TV+, and Oscar winner Larson recently was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work.

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse are engaged, a source tells People.

“They are engaged. They both want to be married. It’s important for them,” says the insider.

The Daisy Jones and the Six actress, 31, revealed in November that she and the 37-year-old The Batman star were expecting their first child together.

“I decided to wear something particularly sparkly today ’cause I thought it might distract you from something else that’s going on,” a fan video captured her saying at the Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City, gesturing to her belly.

“I’m not sure if it’s working,” she joked.

It is the first child for both.

The pair have been together for five years, but the private couple only made their pairing official in December of 2022, at a fashion show in Egypt for Dior, for which Twilight veteran Pattinson models.
