Russell Crowe has been tapped to star in The Pope’s Exorcist, a supernatural thriller from Overlord director Julius Avery, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Crowe will play real-life figure Father Gabriele Amorth, a priest who served as the Vatican’s chief exorcist with some 100,000-plus alleged exorcisms under his belt. Deadline reports Emma Roberts has joined the ensemble cast of Sony Pictures’ Madame Web, joining Dakota Johnson, who will star as the titular Marvel character, first introduced in the comics back in 1980. Mary Mara, the actor best known for her recurring roles as patient Loretta Sweet in ER and inspector Bryn Carson in Nash Bridges, died in Cape Vincent, New York on Sunday in an apparent drowning. She was 61. Mara was discovered in the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent around 8:10 p.m. police confirmed in a report obtained by Variety. A rep for Mara tells the outlet that she was staying at the summer home of her sister, Martha. Mara’s other notable TV credits include NYPD Blue, Ally McBeal, Law & Order, The West Wing, Monk, Shameless, Ray Donovan, Dexter and Criminal Minds. They’re back, to solve another murder! Only Murders in the Building returns Tuesday on Hulu for season 2, with stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez on the case again. 

Last season ended with the Arconia Board president being murdered, and Martin tells ABC Audio that’s exactly where things pick up. 

“We’re set on solving the crime that ended last season,” he shares. “But one of the biggest changes is, you know, in terms of story is now that our podcast has hit big, we’re all three getting a little bit of notoriety that we didn’t have before.”

“So we will walk down the street and maybe get noticed by people. And we have to set about solving a crime while being kind of famous. Not really famous. Just kind of famous. Like we are now,” Martin laughs. 

More specifically, the season begins with the trio’s characters being interrogated by police. So, who would be the first to flip on the others in real life?

“Me!” Gomez quickly admits, before Martin calls out Short.

“I think Marty would sell us out at a second,” he says — and Short doesn’t deny it.

“I think definitely I would in one second, to survive in one second,” he says. “But I think before I could get the words out, Selena would have sold us out.”

Despite the first season being a huge hit, Short reveals he didn’t feel a lot of pressure going into season two because “a sequel is actually easier because you now know the characters.”

“Well, you have to understand one thing, Marty has never done a second season,” Martin teases, to which Short rebuttals with their movie Father of the Bride 2.

“Oh, that’s true,” Martin acknowledges, “But I’m talking about television.”

“Oh, touché,” Short responds.

On Monday afternoon, Tom Cruise took to Twitter as his Top Gun: Maverick surpassed the $1 billion mark at the box office.

Cruise, the producer and star of the blockbuster, was adamant that his film avoid debuting on streaming, choosing instead with Paramount Pictures to delay the movie multiple times during the pandemic, with the goal of getting the film on the big screen.

His message didn’t specifically mention Top Gun‘s bottom line — it is now his biggest movie ever — but instead thanked everybody who fought to preserve the theatrical experience.

Cruise noted, “To all the films in release, to all the studios, and to all the exhibitors: congratulations. To the audience: thank you for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you.”

He added, “See you at the movies.”

With the release of a photo of the show’s “clapper,” HBO announced Monday that shooting on the fourth season of the Emmy-winning series Succession has begun.

The show, which has earned 23 Emmy nominations and nine wins, as well as trophies from the Screen Actors Guild and others, will have a 10-episode fourth season, HBO revealed.

The series centers on the powerful Roy family, led by patriarch Logan Roy — played by Emmy winner Brian Cox — and the family drama surrounding the members serving in his media empire, including fellow Emmy winner Jeremy Strong‘s Kendall, Kieran Culkin‘s Roman, Sarah Snook‘s Siobhan and Alan Ruck‘s Connor.

The network teases of the upcoming season: “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”

The season is expected to debut next year.

Jodie Sweetin guest hosted E!’s Daily Pop show on Monday and addressed getting shoved by Los Angeles police officers on Saturday while she was protesting the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The actress recalled, “We were there protesting, and they were walking us back where we were, and one of the officers just snatched my bag and tossed me forward.”

Sweetin said she had no plans to press charges. “We took care of the situation. We didn’t use that as an excuse to do anything further. We continued our march, and we were out there probably another four or five hours marching downtown,” she said.

The Full House star was keen to shift the spotlight away from the highly publicized incident. “Above all, I want to continue to not make this about me.”

The star explained, “People are shocked when they see Stephanie Tanner, something happened to her, and all of a sudden it makes it more real, and I hate that it takes people knowing someone, being someone that they recognize, for people to be outraged or take action.”

The 40-year-old former child star also added, “If people are disturbed by what they saw, let me tell you: I’ve spent a lot of time protesting out in the streets and that is a very minor incident of police brutality.”

Sweetin vowed to “continue to bring the focus back to women’s rights and also to police brutality.”

Mishael Morgan made history Friday night as she became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama: Actress.


She was previously nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2018 and 2019 for her role as Hilary Curtis in The Young and the Restless. After starring in the series since 2013, this year, Morgan won for her current role as Amanda Sinclair.


“I was born on a tiny island in the Caribbean, and I’m now standing on an international stage and I am being honored regardless of the color of my skin, regardless of my passport, for being the best at what I do,” the 35-year-old actress said in her acceptance speech. “Now there are little girls around the world and no matter what the industry, the vocation … they can strive to be the best.”


“I need to thank the fans and everybody sitting at home,” Morgan continued. “They embraced me when I came on this show and I am so immensely proud of our generation.”


“We are breaking glass ceilings left right and center and I am so honored to be a vessel and to experience this moment. Everybody out there today, we can do this thing called equality and unity together,” she added.


Morgan posted an Instagram photo holding her trophy, which she captioned, “It wasn’t a dream. We did this. I am so blessed to be living in a time, where this could be a part of my story.”


Other winners at the 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards included Steve Harvey, Outstanding Game Show Host for Family Feud, and Tamron Hall, Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host for her self-titled show. Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts also won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Informative Talk Show.

It was a dogfight at the box office over the weekend, but in the end, Elvis downed Maverick.

Newly revised numbers quoted by Variety show that Baz Luhrmann‘s Presley biopic beat Tom Cruise‘s sequel by around a million bucks — close, but still good enough for a first place finish.

The trade reports that Elvis made $31.1 million in its first weekend in theaters, while Top Gun: Maverick brought in $29.6 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. Earlier estimates had the movies tied at $30.5 million apiece.

That said, don’t feel bad for Tom: Maverick is the star’s biggest hit of his long career and flew past the billion-dollar mark at the global box office after just a month.

As its name suggests, the palette breaks apart — like Thor’s hammer Mjölnir did. One side bears shades emulating the new armor of Chris Hemsworth‘s character, while the other side’s colors more closely reflect the literal glow-up Natalie Portman‘s character, Jane Foster, gets when she becomes Mighty Thor.

The set retails for $25.

AMC’s acclaimed drama Better Call Saul just recruited another Emmy winner for its final season: Carol Burnett.

The network announced Monday that the iconic comedienne will guest in multiple episodes of the series’ sixth season, playing a character named “Marion.”

“I’m thrilled to be a part of my favorite show,” Burnett enthused in the announcement.

As previously reported, Breaking Bad Emmy winners Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will also appear in the spin-off’s final season, reprising their respective Breaking Bad roles of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.

The series, produced by Sony Pictures Television, returns for its final six episodes beginning Monday, July 11 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+. The series finale will air on August 15.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Marvel Studios stormed 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con, where the studio’s head Kevin Feige teased projects, including eventual Emmy nominees The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and WandaVision as well as big-screen hits, including Black Widow, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

Both 2020 and 2021’s San Diego Comic-Cons were moved to virtual events because of the pandemic. However, while promoting the Thor four-quel on Friday, Feige said Marvel Studios is coming back to San Diego’s famed Hall H this year, where big projects are announced.

“Yes, you can,” Feige said when asked if fans can expect a return in 2022.

“We’ll be at Comic-Con next month, which we’re excited about. First time since we were on stage there three years ago, talking about this movie [Love and Thunder] and many others.”

He added, “So, yes, we’re excited to go and talk about the future. We always look at five, ten years ahead –and it changes and twists and turns — but that’s usually, you know, as far out as we go, and then start to build it.”

Feige has a lot to tease come July when San Diego Comic-Con returns, including 2023’s big-screen sequels Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Marvels and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, as well as the reboot of Blade starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and Disney+ projects, including Ironheart, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Secret Invasion.

Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Oscar-winning writer-director Taika Waititi, opens July 8.
