Vincent D’Onofrio on returning as Kingpin in Marvel Studios’ new ‘Echo’, and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Marvel Studios

All five episodes of Marvel Studios’ Echo have debuted on Disney+.

The show, Marvel’s first mature-rated series, spins off Hawkeye‘s Maya Lopez/Echo, played by Alaqua Cox. Also returning is Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, who as is established in Hawkeye, acted as an uncle to young Maya.

Deaf and an amputee, like Cox, Maya rises through his criminal ranks as an assassin, until she ultimately finds out he was the one to blame for her father’s death at the climax of Hawkeye, and gets even with Fisk at the end of a gun.

Echo both fleshes out their relationship before and after her final confrontation with Fisk.

D’Onofrio’s brutal portrayal of the classic Marvel villain is universally praised by fans, who are normally a fickle bunch. “I am aware of it and very happy about it,” he tells ABC Audio of fans’ reaction.

He teases of Fisk and Maya, “It’s just an amazing relationship … just a intense father/daughter kind of story when there’s good and evil involved and all this kind of intensity, very kind of emotionally violent [and] the series can be physically violent at times as well.”

D’Onofrio is currently working on Daredevil: Born Again, which reunites him with Fisk’s Hell’s Kitchen nemesis from the Netflix days, Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock/Daredevil. The actor teases the show has the same R-rated “vibe” as that and Echo.

“I’m having a ball,” D’Onofrio says. “Not only is it a great character to play,” but Marvel is “giving Charlie Cox and I a lot of freedom.” He adds that Born Again is “really intense stuff.”

“It hurts”: Jo Koy talks Golden Globes monologue criticism, “flat” Taylor Swift joke

Sonja Flemming/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Golden Globes host Jo Koy is explaining himself after a joke about Taylor Swift appeared to fall flat during the broadcast.

Critics pointed out it wasn’t the only joke of the night that didn’t land.

“I’d be lying [if I said] it doesn’t hurt,” he said to GMA3 on Monday. “I hit a moment there when I was like, ‘Ahh!'”

He continued, “Hosting is a tough gig,” and noted he had “an off night.”

Swift appeared unamused when Koy joked the camera would cut away more sparingly to Swift during the 81st Golden Globe Awards than it does during NFL games.

The first-time host and comedian later downplayed the joke, which has now gone viral.

“It’s a tough room and it was a hard job. I’m not gonna lie. Getting that gig and then having the amount of time that we had to prepare was a crash course,” Koy said.

“The Taylor one was just a little flat and you know, it was a weird joke, I guess, but it was more on the NFL. You know what I mean?” Koy continued.

“I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. And so it was more of a jab towards the NFL but it just didn’t come out that way,” he insisted.

During the live broadcast, when the camera panned to Swift, who was nominated for cinematic and box office achievement for her Eras Tour film, she seemed to purse her lips and then take a sip from a champagne glass.

Christopher Nolan’s staying off his Peloton “for a little while” after ‘Tenet’ diss

CBS/Sonja Flemming

After his Oppenheimer became the big winner in Sunday night’s Golden Globes telecast, Christopher Nolan was asked the question many people really wanted the answer to: has he taken another Peloton class?

As reported, Nolan recently revealed he saddled up for a class back in 2020 only to hear the instructor — later outed by the internet as Jenn Sherman — take shots at his film Tenet, without knowing he was watching.

She described the time-slipping movie as “two and a half hours I’ll never get back.”

The story blew up so big that Sherman took to Instagram to apologize, calling the filmmaker “one of the leading filmmakers of the 21st century,” and noting of her criticism, “It was 2020. It was a dark time.”

She also invited Nolan to sit in for another one of her classes, which she promised would be “insult free.” She added he could sit up front. “You can critique my class. We’ll have a great time. You’ll sit in the front row. And I promise you it’ll be insult-free.”

She also expressed that while Tenet may have “gone right over my head,” she has seen Oppenheimer twice. “And that’s six hours that I don’t ever want to give back.”

To the assembled press backstage at the Globes, however, Nolan said Sunday, “Nothing but love for Peloton, but I did not climb on it today.” He added, “I might just skip it for a little while, but thank you for your concern.”

Jodie Foster can’t even with Gen Z workers

MICHAEL TRAN/AFP via Getty Images

Jodie Foster has been working on camera since she was 3 years old — and maybe that’s why, at 61, the two-time Oscar winner has a bone to pick with the work ethic of today’s young people.

To The Guardian, the True Detective: Night Country star huffed of Gen Zers, “They’re really annoying, especially in the workplace. They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10:30 a.m.'”

She continues, “Or, like, in emails, I’ll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling? And they’re like, ‘Why would I do that, isn’t that kind of limiting?'”

That said, there’s one particular member of that demographic that Jodie can’t say enough good things about, and that’s The Last of Us Golden Globe nominee and Game of Thrones alumna Bella Ramsey.

Foster made it a point to meet Ramsey at Elle magazine’s Women in Hollywood celebration. “I reached out to Bella, because we’d never met, and said, ‘I want you to introduce me at this thing,'” the actor and director says.

Foster continued, expressing that the organizers of the event “are very proud of themselves because they’ve got every ethnicity, and I’m like, yeah, but all the attendees are still wearing heels and eyelashes. There are other ways of being a woman, and it’s really important for people to see that. And Bella, who gave the best speech, was wearing the most perfect suit, beautifully tailored, and a middle parting and no makeup.”

“I do a lot of reaching out to young actresses,” Foster explained. “I’m compelled. Because it was hard growing up.”

Foster also lamented not having the “freedom” to express her sexuality in her early years, as Bella did, declaring to British Vogue recently that she’s “not 100% straight.”

‘Suits’ co-stars reunite at Golden Globes

L-R: Torres, Adams, Macht, Rafferty — CBS/Sonja Flemming

The unexpected streaming dominance of Suits led to one of the more fan-appreciated moments of an otherwise bumpy Golden Globes telecast Sunday night.

Stars Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht, who respectively played Mike Ross and Harvey Specter on the legal drama that ended in 2019, took to the stage to present the final TV award of the night, Outstanding Drama Series.

“There’s nothing more dramatic or anxiety-inducing than waiting all night to hear that your category is finally arrived,” Macht said on stage.

Referencing their show’s newfound attention, Adams replied to laughs, “Yes, that’s true. It’s hard to imagine having to wait so long to see your show get that kind of recognition.”

They were then joined onstage by their Suits costars Gina Torres and Sarah Rafferty, who played, respectively, Jessica Pearson and Donna Paulsen.

Before the show, Adams and Macht spoke to Variety on the red carpet, and the topic of the in-development Suits spin-off came up.

Adams mentioned the project is “all in early stages,” describing it “like a Suits L.A.” He continued, “our fearless showrunner Aaron [Korsh is] working on that,” but admitted, “If I got the phone call, I’d be ready to suit up again. I loved the show, I loved the character and I loved working with all these people.”

Adams, who played the love interest — and eventual husband — of Meghan Markle‘s Rachel Zane, even hinted at the possibility of their characters’ potential to leave their eventual home base of Seattle to “come down to L.A. and fix some stuff.”

The spin-off will reportedly center on new characters, but Korsh has spoken of the possibility of having Suits veterans make appearances.

Jonathan Majors speaks out for 1st time after conviction in domestic violence trial

ABC News/Michael Le Brecht II

In his first interview since a jury found him guilty of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend, Jonathan Majors said he was “shocked and afraid” upon hearing the verdict.

“I say, ‘How is that possible based off the evidence, based off the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence?'” the actor said to ABC News Live’s Linsey Davis in an exclusive sit-down interview.

Majors was found guilty of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment, but acquitted of two other counts of assault and aggravated harassment.

As he awaits sentencing, he told Davis he plans to appeal.

Majors, 34, was arrested and charged following a March 2023 altercation with his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, in a for-hire SUV in New York City.

The mixed verdict signaled the jury believed Majors recklessly assaulted his ex-girlfriend, but did not intentionally do so.

Majors said picking Jabbari up was “one of the biggest mistakes of my life.”

“I pick her up, I put her back in the car. I’m trying to get rid of her. I’m trying to get away from her, as the video shows, you know?” he said. “Second biggest mistake of my life, I try to keep her in the car.”

The altercation began in the SUV, after Jabbari saw a flirty text message from another woman on Majors’ phone. Jabbari testified that she tried to grab his phone after seeing the message.

“It just felt like he was twisting my arm and my hand and trying to make me feel pain,” she said in court.

Majors said he is confident he didn’t cause any injuries.

“She went to grab the phone. I held the phone. I pulled the phone back. She came on top of me, squeezed my face, slapped me. That’s all I remember,” he said.

He said he “wish[ed] to God” he knew how the injuries occurred.

“That would give clarity. That would give me some type of peace about it,” he said.

The extended interview airs on ABC News Live’s Prime with Linsey Davis Monday at 7 p.m. ET.

Deadpool accepts Creative Arts Emmy award for ‘Welcome to Wrexham’

20th Century Studios

On social media Sunday night, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds acknowledged their FX show Welcome to Wrexham‘s Emmy win, which came during the Creative Arts Emmys held over the weekend.

Well, Ryan was a no-show, so his alter ego Deadpool did the honors — hijacking McElhenney’s heartfelt acceptance speech from home just as it was getting started.

Wearing a business suit, topped with his Deadpool mask, and holding a broken trophy, Deadpool referred to Ryan and his better half Blake Lively by saying, “Mr. Lively couldn’t be here to accept this broken Emmy, so he sent me on his behalf.”

After thanking the city of Wrexham, on whose beloved soccer team the show centers — and the club Reynolds and McElhenney own — Deadpool added, “I’d also like to thank the Academy for this honor and for not asking us to attend the televised awards show with the real celebrities. I’d also like to thank FX and Disney for their support, and in exchange, Mr. Lively promises not to f*** up my next movie.”

Deadpool 3 comes out this summer, starring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

And to that end, the Merc with a mouth noted, “Lastly The Oscars: You’re on notice, motherf******. Maybe we can get a token VFX nod next year. The amount of work on Hugh and Ryan’s face alone [is] worth at least a nod.”
