Halyna Hutchins’ widower slams investigators for release of information in ‘Rust’ shooting

In a strongly-worded letter to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, lawyers representing Halyna Hutchins‘ widower, Matthew, and young son Andros slammed Mendoza’s office for its release Monday of information related to the Rust investigation.

As reported Monday, the office released a trove of materials related to the fatal shooting of the cinematographer on the film’s set in October, including interviews with Alec Baldwin, who fired the fatal shot, as well as graphic footage of the attempts to save Hutchins’ life.

“Your office trampled on the constitutional rights over the Hutchins [family],” the attorneys’ letter reads, in part. “Your office promised to allow Mr. Hutchins to review the materials being publicly released in advance of their dissemination to the press…It failed to give the Hutchins [family] the dignity and privacy the New Mexico constitution affords them.”

Further, the letter asserts “The first time Mr. Hutchins saw the disturbing and unsettling video footage of his dying wife laying on the church floor was on Radar Online, an Internet website. A greater respect for the Hutchins’ constitutional rights would not have allowed this video footage to be released.”

“The potential consequences are disturbing given how information is misused on social media,” the attorneys argue. “We fear for example that this shocking footage of Andros’ mother dying may be material used by bullies to emotionally abuse him in the future.”

The attorneys also claim what’s “most troubling” is that the release of the material wasn’t legally required, they say.

The letter concludes with a demand that the sheriff’s office respects the Hutchins family’s “constitutional rights of dignity, privacy, respect, and fairness going forward,” as well as remove the video footage of Halyna.

“While the damage of publishing that video is irreparable, taking down the video will end your office’s complicity in causing further harm,” reads the letter.

The annual movie industry expo CinemaCon in Las Vegas always promises surprises, but one was very personal for actress and director Olivia Wilde on Tuesday night: She was served with custody papers while onstage.

Wilde, who has two children with her ex, Ted Lasso Emmy winner Jason Sudeikis: 8-year-old son Otis, and a 5-year-old daughter, Daisy.

Wilde was onstage about to talk up Don’t Worry Darling, her new thriller starring boyfriend Harry Styles, when she was handed a manila envelope by an unknown individual, before continuing her presentation.

A source confirmed the incident to ABC News, noting, Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis.”

That said, the former SNL star was apparently not thrilled about how the whole thing went down.

“Mr. Sudeikis had no prior knowledge of the time or place that the envelope would have been delivered as this would solely be up to the process service company involved,” the source said, adding, “he would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner.

Indeed, it’s not known how the process server even got into the event, let alone got close enough to Wilde at that high-profile moment to hand her the material. The Hollywood Reporter says organizers of the event, which wraps up today, are rethinking their security.

Go behind the scenes of the making of The Godfather starting today, with the new Paramount+ series The Offer. It focuses on the obstacles producer Al Ruddy faced in trying to get the film made.

Series showrunner Nikki Toscano tells ABC Audio those obstacles involved battling not budgets and casting, “but the real life mafia in order to get this movie made.”

“I think that there’s a lot of the sort of life and death stakes of trying to get your film made, while also contending with the Mafia is a pretty, pretty big one,” she continues.

“Every movie goes through the problems of, oh, can we raise enough money? Can we come in on budget? Who’s against us? Who’s trying to kill the movie?” adds Russell RothbergThe Offer‘s executive producer. “But when it comes to who’s trying to kill the movie and it’s the Mafia, that’s kind of a very unique story with big stakes.”

Juno Temple, who plays producer Al Ruddy’s assistant Bettye McCartt in the film says a lot of details about The Godfather surprised her, but the revelation she found most shocking? “That Al Pacino almost got fired — that was shocking. Like what? On what planet? You know what I mean?”

Adds Temple, “Can you imagine if Al Pacino had been fired? We wouldn’t be sitting here talking about it.”

Miles Teller, who plays Ruddy in the movie, was more fascinated to learn how the sausage was made.

“People say they don’t want to know how the sausage is made, they just know they like sausage. For this it’s the opposite,” he explains. “Now that I know how it’s made, it even makes me like sausage even more. I love sausage. Can’t get enough of it.”

A Walking Dead spin-off series centering on fan favorites Daryl and Carol — played by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride — suffered a surprising setback, with McBride suddenly exiting the project.

It seems that the split was amicable, as AMC noted in a press release, “Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff…which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year.”

The statement continued, “Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time,” adding, “We know fans will be disappointed by this news.”

There are still multiple spin-offs in the works from the apocalyptic show, including Isle of the Dead, a New York City-set project featuring Lauren Cohan‘s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan‘s Negan, who canonically murdered Maggie’s husband Glenn.

The critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series Pachinko wraps up this week. Based on the best-selling book, it tells the story of four generations of a Korean family who moves to Japan and lives through war, peace, and 80 years of joy and struggle.

Showrunner Soo Hugh tells ABC Audio that despite the theme, it’s a global show.

“I want the biggest audience for this show because I think it’s a story that’s worth telling,” she explains. “And hopefully one day, I truly hope that we can get rid of those terms, that we can get rid of terms like domestic, international, that we will just have one global marketplace, stories that speak to everyone and connect us together.”

“These are just basic human emotions that we’re investigating,” Hugh adds. “You know, a mother’s hopes and dreams, loss, homesickness. No one people own those feelings.”

The project was personal for Hugh, who shares, “You grow up with stories of how hard the war was, how hard the post war years are. But…I think no child wants to hear how difficult things are for his or her family, right? And it’s only through age and through experience that you understand just how hard it is to live. And I think that kind of empathy as you age just makes you understand these stories better.”

Hugh notes the series — set in South Korea, Japan, and the United States — wasn’t easy to make because of the “scope…ambitions, multiple countries, long shoots, long post process [and] very complicated structure, ” but it was definitely worth the struggle.

“And also, I talk about tears of being genuinely moved so many times by the actor’s performances, by the music, by so many things,” she continues.
