The new movie You Hurt My Feelings is about all the little white lies we tell the people we love, in order to not hurt their feelings. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays an author married to a therapist, played by Tobias Menzies. They’re a perfectly happy couple, until she realizes he doesn’t like her new novel and has been lying to her about it.

Nicole Holofcener, who wrote and directed the film, which is out this weekend, tells ABC Audio it came from a personal place.

“I think it initially came from a fear that people are lying to me or that somebody really close to me doesn’t like my films, and yet they like me. And can they like me if they don’t like my films? And, you know, feeling way too connected to my career, like my career is me,” she explains.

Adds Holofcener, “I hope that couples turn around to each other and start asking questions. And I’m sure there are plenty of lies in the answers. You know, it’s like, does my a** look fat in this? I mean, it’s really opening up a can of worms.”

When it comes to her work, Louis-Dreyfus says she “would like to have the truth, please.” However, she’d like to have the truth “delivered kindly. Yeah, Kindness, I think, is the mitigating factor.”

Menzies agrees, noting that “Even though it can be very uncomfortable, ultimately, I would rather have the truth and then kind of, yeah, try and work it out from there.”

Margot Robbie teases what’s to come in the upcoming Barbie movie in Vogue‘s new summer issue.

The actress, who stars as the titular doll and is also producing the film through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, told the outlet that recognizing the iconic brand’s impact was important, along with recognizing those who aren’t fans of it.

“We of course would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has,” she said in the cover story. “But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren’t fans of Barbie.”

She continued, “And in fact, aren’t just indifferent to Barbie. They actively hate Barbie. And have a real issue with Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that.”

The actress said that after reading the script from Greta Gerwig, who directed the film, and Noah Baumbach, she thought it was “genius.”

Speaking to the outlet about transforming into her character, Robbie said she struggled at first to devise methods to immerse herself into her role.

She said Gerwig then gave her a podcast recommendation that honed in on a woman without an inner monologue, which was helpful in her process.

Robbie also worked to examine the hypersexualization of the doll.

“I’m like, Okay, she’s a doll. She’s a plastic doll,” she told Vogue. “She doesn’t have organs. If she doesn’t have organs, she doesn’t have reproductive organs. If she doesn’t have reproductive organs, would she even feel sexual desire? No, I don’t think she could.”

“She is sexualized. But she should never be sexy,” Robbie continued.

Along with Robbie, the other Barbies in the film include Ritu Arya, Nicola Coughlan, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae and Alexandra Shipp.

The movie, also starring Ryan Gosling as Ken, arrives in theaters July 21.

Drew Barrymore made headlines last month when she abruptly dropped out of hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards in solidarity with striking Hollywood writers, promising to return next year instead.

She tells ABC Audio, “We put, you know, six months of real blood, sweat and tears into building what was going to be an extraordinary show. So it was a very tough decision for everyone. But I think there just came a moment where I realized that I had to make a choice … like, what in my core did I feel was the correct thing to do, not even by committee, just inside of myself,” Drew explains.

Barrymore says she was delighted MTV backed her decision, saying, “It was an all hands in, ‘Let’s announce this together.'” She also happily explained viewership for the show, which used pre-taped segments they prepared, jumped 24% from last year.

With her eponymous talk show flying high, Barrymore also went viral this year with Jennifer Aniston, thanks to honoring their friend — and former co-star — Adam Sandler at the Kennedy Center Honors. The pair pretended to joust over who was closer to the SNL vet.

“She’s someone I really trust because she is so pro writers,” Drew says. “And we worked on it until the last minute … We did not go out there and wing anything. We meticulously worked for two weeks with numerous writers on how to pull this off.”

She added of the “wonderful” experience, “It gave us a taste of what it’s like to work together with Sandler. And like, now I just want more.”

So will the three appear in a movie together? “I might have just texted them some pictures the other day of some inspiration, as in, like, I did. I think it’s possible. I certainly would be game.”

Netflix

At the Cannes International Film Festival, a showcase for celebrities and big-name “prestige” pictures, a sequel to a pulpy Liam Neeson movie called The Ice Road just set a record.

Behind the famous red carpets, the festival is where moviemakers, both famous and not, try to sell their movies, both celebrated and not, to a distributor. Deadline reports Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky just sold for around $17 million to Amazon Prime Video.

The 2021 original, which had a brief run in theaters before taking off on Netflix, has Neeson playing Mike McCann, another guy with a particular set of skills — this one driving trucks on, well, icy roads. He later undertakes a rescue mission of a group of trapped miners whose accident may not have been an accident.

According to the trade, the sequel sees McCann trading in the tundras for Nepal, plying his skills as a tour bus driver on the treacherous mountain roads in the Asian country. There, he must save his passengers from a group of mercenaries.

Taylor Lautner calls out hateful comments about his appearance, talks mental health

Taylor Lautner is opening up about hateful comments he’s received about his appearance and shared an important message on mental health.

The Twilight alum, 31, posted a video to Instagram Monday sharing some of the remarks people have made, including ones that said he “did not age well.”

Lautner began the video saying he’d just gotten back from a run and was “feeling really good about myself, trying to stay healthy both physically and mentally,” which made him want to address the comments head-on.

Some of the remarks were about his hairline; another that he “aged like a raisin.”

Lautner said in the past, comments like this “really would have got under my skin, and it would have caused me to want to just go in a hole and not go outside.”

However, he’s “in a different place” these days and has worked on himself to stop putting “value in the wrong things.”

“You find value where you put it,” he explained. “And if you put your value in what other people think of you, that’s how you’re going to feel. But if you put your value in you knowing who you are, what’s important to you, what you love, that kind of stuff won’t get to you.”

Lautner continued, “I’m just so thankful I’m in the place I am today where I can see that. I’m not gonna lie and say it doesn’t bug me, but it doesn’t make me question who I am, and it doesn’t take anything away from me.”

The actor ended his video asking his followers to “just think about and remember where you put your value in life.”

“And also, just be nice,” he added. “It’s not that difficult. Let’s be nice to each other. Let’s spread love and positivity. It’s that simple.”

Pedro Pascal confirms he only voiced his character in ‘The Mandalorian”s third season

Pedro Pascal confirms he only voiced his character in ‘The Mandalorian”s third season
Lucasfilm

As hardcore Star Wars fans already know, it takes at least three people to make The Mandalorian‘s Din Djarin the man he is.

Of course, Pedro Pascal has been billed as the man under the shiny beskar helmet since the first season of the Disney+ show, but things were very different for season 3, he tells The Hollywood Reporter.

When Din’s bucket is on, Brendan Wayne — grandson of icon John Wayne — was underneath, providing Din with his gunslinger swagger. If there’s any fistfighting or Darksaber dueling to be done, that goes to martial artist Lateef Crowder wearing the costume.

There were scenes in seasons 1 and 2 when Din had to remove his helmet, revealing Pascal’s face — a no-no to the character’s code — but that didn’t happen in season 3, and it wasn’t because of Din’s beliefs.

It was because Pascal wasn’t there, he tells the trade.

The actor was busy filming HBO’s The Last of Us when Mando‘s third season was underway, which means he only provided Din’s gravelly voice.

Pascal says of the first two seasons, “There was an extended amount of experimentation, being in the suit for a lot of it, and frankly, my body wasn’t up for the task as far as, like, the four months of it. But I was in it. I was in it a significant amount, an elastic amount.”

He adds, “But now we’ve figured it out, which is super cool, and amazingly, it gave me the opportunity to be able to go and do something else.”

Pedro says he wouldn’t change either of the other actors’ performances as his stand-ins, who were given top billing in the show’s credits for the first time this season.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ second season trailer teases live-action ‘Lower Decks’ crossover

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ second season trailer teases live-action ‘Lower Decks’ crossover
Paramount+/Michael Gibson

On Wednesday, Paramount+ dropped a trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In a twist, it shows a live-action crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks, the streaming service’s offbeat, comedic animated series set in the same universe.

Strange New World‘s cast, including Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley and Ethan Peck as Spock, are all back on board the Starship Enterprise.

“Our job puts us up against death,” Captain Pike tells a crew member. “We don’t have to like it. But we do have to face it.”

But amid the action, interstellar intrigue and romance, there’s a tension breaker: The action-packed preview also reveals The Boys‘ Jack Quaid as Brad Boimler and Brockmire‘s Tawny Newsome as Beckett Mariner — the same characters they voice on Star Trek: Lower Decks — but in the flesh.

“Surprise!” Mariner says, hinting that the quirky characters won’t be changing their stripes in live-action form.

At the trailer’s close, Spock sends off Quaid’s character with the other crew members in the ship’s transporter room. “Live long and prosper,” Spock tells the jittery Starfleet officer, as he’s about to be beamed off the ship. “Ah, you, uh, also live and …” Quaid stammers in reply, trying his best to mimic the Vulcan salute.

The second season debuts June 15.

A week after the reality show premiered, Paramount+ announced it has renewed The Family Stallone for a second season.

The series follows Sylvester Stallone, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughters SistineScarlet and Sophia, as they navigate life as one of Hollywood’s most famous families.

For 26-year-old Sistine, Sly and Jennifer’s eldest, watching the show back had its share of surprises. “Obviously we’ve seen him on TV and film our entire life, but seeing him play the role of Girl Dad was so strange,” she tells ABC Audio.

Sly interrupted, “I thought you were going to say, ‘He looks shorter in person.'”

Sistine laughed, “That too, that too. But it’s, you know, we’re used to seeing this macho, tough actor play this role. And now we’re seeing you petting a little Cavapoo and eating cookies.” Sky’s youngest, 20-year-old Scarlet, adds, “And also giving the best wisdom.”

The Rocky creator and Tulsa King star added sarcastically, “There goes my audience … next, I have a cooking show,” miming mixing in a bowl. “Like, ‘Hey, how are ya? Donuts with Sly.'”

Paramount+ says The Family Stallone‘s debut on May 17 broke records, becoming the #1 original reality series premiere on the service.
