Explosive secrets and adolescent angst burn brightly in the new series City on Fire, which drops Friday on Apple TV+.

The show centers around the mysterious shooting of Chase Sui Wonders’ Samantha, a complicated NYU student with many secrets of her own.

“You think, ‘Oh, she’s this confident, cool, downtown New York girl. But under the surface, there’s a fire raging,” Wonders tells ABC Audio. “That’s my favorite kind of character to play. It’s like, ‘What are you concealing underneath the mask, and how are you presenting versus the inner turmoil?’”

Wyatt Oleff’s Charlie – or, as Sam affectionately calls him, Charles – is “sort of home for her,” Wonders says. “What she finds is that Charles takes care of her as much as she takes care of him.”

This dynamic is not necessarily romantic, however. “It’s that type of situation where it’s like the love is almost right. It’s almost perfect for her,” Wonders says. “That’s why it’s so tragic.”

Nico Tortorella’s William, an artist who discovers many unforeseen connections to Sam, becomes obsessed with solving her mystery.

“The case of Sam in so many ways is an extension of what William is going through,” Tortorella says. “He starts to discover himself along the way and to discover his past.”

Along for the journey is William’s boyfriend, Mercer, played by Xavier Clyde in his first-ever TV role.

Tortorella acknowledges they’ve had many on-screen relationships over the years, but emphasized “the love, and heart, and dedication” Clyde put into establishing their dynamic together.

“I needed it,” Tortorella says. “It reminded me why I do what I do and why I love to do what I do and how special of a job this is that we get to bring these characters to life.”

Recently, Rocky IV and Creed 2 star Dolph Lundgren revealed he has been secretly battling cancer for eight years. The 65-year-old Swedish actor opened up to the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast, telling the host that doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his kidney in 2015 which they were able to successfully remove.

However, other tumors sprung up, and at one point, he was losing the fight. He asked his doctor, “‘How long do you think I’ve got left?’ And I think he said two or three years, but I could tell in his voice that he probably thought it was less,” he recalled.

The news came as a shock to his pal Sylvester Stallone, he told ABC Audio Thursday, explaining he just called his pal, who incidentally appears on Sly’s upcoming reality show The Family Stallone.

“I did,” Stallone said. “I didn’t know about it until I read about it yesterday. And I was shocked because we’ve been dealing with each other for years, including in the last couple of years. And I never knew that he was undergoing this incredible pain.”

He added, “It’s, you know, just the fact that he’s living in fear never brought it up. He then, you’ll see in other episodes, he is just outgoing and happy. He’s one tough guy.”

Stallone explained he called him Wednesday, expressing, “I felt really sad. Yeah, I really do. But he says it’s gotten better. And I’m going, ‘Okay.'”

Lundgren also revealed that he had some of the tumors around his kidneys surgically removed, and after getting a second opinion and a new course of treatment, others shrank by 90%.

Imagine going on an Italian holiday with several of your best friends, for work! That’s what Jane FondaMary Steenburgen, and Candice Bergen got to do for their new film Book Club: The Next Chapter, and filming was just as fun for the trio as you think it would be.

“It never felt like work to me. It was pure pleasure,” Bergen tells ABC Audio.

Fonda echoed the same sentiment adding, “We went out for meals together. We ate pasta and gelato all the time. It was a blast.”

“Our Italian crew was amazing,” Steenburgen adds. “And then I have my dream team I get to work with. So it was just, it was heaven.”

In the new sequel, the trio’s characters go on an exciting Italian holiday, and in the process discover a lot about themselves and why they are where they are in life. A central question in the film is “Are we where we are because of fate, or do we make our own fate?”

“We have to steer our own way, deciding where we want to go. That’s what I believe,” Fonda shares.

Steenburgen believes she’s in control, but once in a while leaves things up to a higher power.

“I don’t leave much of anything up to fate,” she begins. “I believe it’s important to have your eyes open and try to listen to the universe. I believe it’s important to have your eyes open and try to listen to the universe. But listen to your own soul. I do believe in angels. So I kind of occasionally ask for a little guidance.”

Meanwhile, Bergen says she has one guiding philosophy in her career when it comes to the roles she picks: “I don’t work with schmucks.”

The ongoing Writers Guild of America strike has no shortage of famous faces and funny picket signs — hey, the strikers are writers, after all — but a photo from Thursday’s protests in New York City had both.

Emmy and Tony winner Mandy Patinkin tweeted a pic of him and Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk, with the caption reading, “Sauls unite!” a reference to Odenkirk’s alter ego and Patinkin’s Homeland character, Saul Berenson. He also wrote the message, “Support our writers!”

The actor is seen hugging Odenkirk, who is flashing a thumbs-up, while holding a picket sign reading, “You killed residuals: Prepare to pay!”

The handwritten text was a nod to his swordsman character Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride, who vowed he’d one day face off with the 11-fingered man who killed his dad and say, “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

One of the issues the writers are striking about are those residuals, payments they receive when shows are rerun. But in the days of streaming, the writers say they’re not being adequately compensated.

Meadow Walker, the daughter of the late Paul Walker, has revealed on Instagram that she’ll be seen in the upcoming 10th Fast and Furious movie.

The actress and model, 24, posted a snap of her image on a video preview monitor, showing her evidently on an airplane in the movie. “A preview of my cameo in Fast X,” she captioned the snap.

“The first fast was released when I was one year old! I grew up on set watching my father, Vin [Diesel], Jordana [Brewster], Michelle [Rodriguez], Chris [“Ludacris” Bridges] and more on the monitors. Thanks to my dad, I was born into the fast family.”

She continued, “I can’t believe now I get to be up there too. With those who have been around to see me grow up.”

She went on to thank director Louis Leterrier for his “kindness, patience and support,” saying, “It feels like you’ve been part of the family since we started, I’m happy it’s just the beginning.”

Leterrier stepped into Fast X when it was in production and will direct the 11th installment.

Meadow closed by saying, “I am so blessed to be able to honor my father’s legacy and share this with him forever x. I love you all so much.”

Fast franchise star Paul Walker died at 40 as a passenger in a fiery high-speed car accident along with his friend, the vehicle’s driver, Roger Rodas, on November 30, 2013. Thanks to his brothers Caleb and Cody acting as stand-ins, as well as some digital magic, Walker’s Brian O’Conner was able to drive into the sunset at the close of Fast 7.

Fast X opens May 19.

Rocky IV star Dolph Lundgren is revealing a private cancer battle he has gone through for the past eight years.

The 65-year-old Swedish actor opened up about his health scare during an interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, telling the host that doctors successfully removed a cancerous tumor in his kidney in 2015.

Lundgren said routine scans were “fine” for five years until doctors found “a few more tumors around the area” after doing an MRI in 2020.

Six more tumors were surgically removed, but doctors later told him that one tumor had grown to “the size of a small lemon.” Side effects from therapy for it started taking a toll on his body.

Lundgren said his doctor told him to “take a break and spend more time with family … So I kind of asked him, ‘How long do you think I’ve got left?’ And I think he said two or three years, but I could tell in his voice that he probably thought it was less,” he recalled. “I thought it was it for sure.”

The Creed II star said he wasn’t “bitter” after hearing this news, as he’s had “a frickin’ great life” and has “lived like five lifetimes in one already with everything I’ve done,” but he did feel bad for his loved ones, including his two daughters, Ida and Greta, and his fiancée, Emma Krokdal.

Happily, Lundgren sought a second opinion, and his new doctor discovered a mutation in one of the tumors that opened the door to additional treatments, which started working within months.

By 2022 the tumors had shrunk by about “90 percent,” he said.

Lundgren will be seen in two big movies later this year: September’s Expendables 4, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, out December 20.

Netflix

Before season 2 of Netflix’s hit teen romance Heartstopper debuts this summer, fans in the U.S. can see where the story of Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson first began.

Solitaire, the 2014 debut novel from Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman, has a brand new edition now available in the U.S. for the first time.

“Now that Hearstopper has found such a huge audience and it’s done so well, I know there are so many people who want to know more about Tori Spring, Charlie’s older sister, who is the protagonist of Solitaire,” the British author tells ABC Audio. “So yeah, I’m really excited for people to get to experience that.”

The novel introduced the Nick and Charlie characters, played by Kit Connor and Joe Locke in the show. Jenny Walser plays Tori in the series and also voices the Solitaire audiobook.

Heartstopper fans will have even more to look forward to, with season 2 premiering on August 3, and volumes 5 and 6 of the graphic novels on the way. Oseman says there are “so many things” she’s excited for in season 2, but teases one thing in particular.

“So we’re going to Paris,” she says. “And I feel like lots of people know that in Volume 3 of the books, the characters all go to Paris. So that’s what we’ll be doing in season 2, seeing the sights of Paris, drama in Paris … We got to film in Paris, as well, so it looks stunning and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Break out the Windex: New trailer to ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’
Focus Features

The Portokalos family is back in the new trailer to My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.

Nia Vardalos, who was nominated for an Oscar for her screenplay for the blockbuster film, writes, directs and stars in the threequel.

This time around, her character, Toula, and the rest of her big family travel to Greece to fulfill her father’s dying wish for her to retrace his roots. Actor Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s father, Gus, died in 2021.

Toula and her husband, Ian (John Corbett), take along returning cast members Andrea Martin, Gia Carides, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Maria Vacratsis, Joey Fatone and Lainie Kazan on the trip, which will culminate with a big fat Greek family reunion.

Once again, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson produce the movie, spun from Vardalos’ hit one-woman play.

The 2002 original became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, earning a total of $368 million. It led to a short-lived TV show, My Big Fat Greek Life, starring the movie’s main players, in 2003. A big-screen sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, hit theaters in 2016.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 opens in theaters on September 8.
