Angela Bassett accepted an Honorary Oscar at the 14th Governors Awards Tuesday night.

During her speech, she shouted out “trailblazing” Black actresses that paved the way for her, including Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Rosalind Cash.

“They were my North Star, my guiding light, proof that while the road may not be without curves and bumps, there was a way to fulfill what I believed deep in my soul was my destiny,” she said.

“It was standing on their strong, spiritually fortified shoulders that I often was sustained, and I thank them for every sacrifice, every doubt, every disappointment, every rejection, every triumph that I know they experienced along the way,” she continued.

Angela also spotlighted each of the 10 Black actresses who have won an Oscar, calling them “beacons of possibility and hope for little Black and brown girls who aspire to one day pursue the dream of becoming an actor.”

“This honor isn’t just for or about me,” she added. “What I hope this moment means is that we are taking the necessary steps toward a future in which it is the norm, not the exception, to see and embrace one another’s full humanity, stories and perspectives. This must be our goal, and to always remember that there is room for us all. When we stand together, we win together.”

Lucasfilm on Tuesday, January 9, confirmed that season 2 of the Disney+ series Star Wars: Ahsoka is in development with creator Dave Filoni.

The news was part of a larger announcement that noted The Mandalorian‘s next adventure would be on the big screen, after three seasons on Disney+. The Mandalorian & Grogu will be directed by the Emmy-winning small screen show’s creator Jon Favreau, and get underway later this year.

Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson as the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano, who, after the fall of the Empire, investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. Its first season wrapped in October.

Season 1 of Ahsoka also starred Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ivanna Sakhno, Diana Lee Inosanto, David Tennant, Lars MikkelsenEman Esfandi, and the late Ray Stevenson.

The press release also explained Filoni would be directing another big screen project centering on Star Wars characters who came to life on the streaming service, and that two other movies were also headed to theaters: One directed by Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘s James Mangold, and another from Oscar winning documentarian and Ms. Marvel veteran Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that will center on the Sequel Trilogy character Rey, played by Daisy Ridley.

Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.

Badabing: ‘The Sopranos’ turns 25

HBO’s Emmy-winning mafia series The Sopranos launched on the premium cable network on this date back in 1999.

The winner of 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, the David Chase-created show starred the late Emmy winner James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, an anxiety-riddled family man who is also the head of a criminal enterprise in New Jersey.

Arguably, The Sopranos paved the way for a so-called new golden age of television, featuring such hits as Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Wire.

Gandolfini died in 2013 while on vacation. He was 51.

The series starred Edie Falco as Tony’s wife, Carmela; Robert Iler as his son, A.J.; Jamie-Lynn Sigler as daughter Meadow; Lorraine Bracco as Tony’s therapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi; the late Dominic Chianese as Tony’s Uncle Junior; Michael Imperioli as Tony’s hothead nephew Christopher Moltisanti; and Drea de Matteo as Christopher’s eventual fiancée Adriana.

Tony’s gang included Vincent Pastore as Big Pussy, Steve Schirripa as Bobby Baccalieri, the late Tony Sirico as “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri and E Street Band member turned actor Steven Van Zandt as Silvio Dante.

Across 86 episodes — and wrapping up with a still-divisive finale that aired June 10, 2007 — the series earned more than 300 award nominations, including 111 Emmy noms.

The cast and creators reunited in person in 2019, and virtually in 2020, to benefit Friends of Firefighters.

That same year, prequel film The Many Saints of Newark debuted in limited theaters because of the pandemic and also on the streaming service now called Max, with Gandolfini’s real-life son, Michael, playing the future mob leader in his youth.

Every episode of the show and the prequel are available to stream on Max. Check out Max’s Anniversary site for more goodies.

And here’s how HBO is celebrating the milestone:

  • Launching an official Sopranos TikTok account that gives 25-second tastes of every episode
  • Dropping never-before-seen footage within the new, in-app Sopranos 25th Anniversary collection.
  • Opening pop-up versions of Tony’s butcher shop Satriale January 10 in New York and Los Angeles.
  • Offering themed menu items on Postmates.
  • Screening the show’s pilot at Alamo Drafthouse locations in New York and Los Angeles.

Tom Cruise‘s Mission: Impossible and Top Gun franchises live at Paramount Pictures, but the global superstar has just inked a huge deal with rival Warner Bros. Pictures.

The “excited” star took to Instagram to share the news, noting, “I look forward to making great movies together!”

Cruise has made movies with WB before, including his first huge hit, 1983’s Risky Business.

In the statement posted by the producer and actor, co-CEOS of the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy said, “We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back — we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business — and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!”

They added, “Today, that becomes a reality and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition.”

Neither Tom nor the statement from the studio mentioned any projects in the pipeline as of yet.

Right before he shot the part that earned him his first Oscar nomination, Barry Keoghan survived a life-threatening infection.

In a recent cover story for GQ, Keoghan revealed that he had a case of necrotizing fasciitis – a rare, rapidly spreading, flesh-eating bacterial infection – right before he started filming The Banshees of Inisherin.

The infection was on his arm, and Keoghan said it was so bad doctors considered amputation. When he asked if he was going to die, his doctors simply responded, “Well, we don’t know.”

Banshees director Martin McDonagh visited Keoghan in the hospital days before the film was set to begin shooting.

“I went to the hospital thinking, s*** is he going to die? Let alone, is he going to make the movie?” McDonagh said. Even still, McDonagh said Keoghan powered through.

“I’m not sure if he was on a lot of meds, but he seemed to shrug it off,” McDonagh said. “We were only about four days out from shooting, and his arm was puffed up. But he was like, ‘Yeah, no, I’m going to be fine—I’ll see you on Tuesday.’”

The director’s hospital visit proved to be prophetic. Keoghan said that McDonagh had faith he’d pull through, telling him, “Just remember this when you’ve been nominated for an Oscar.”

Also in the GQ article, Keoghan opened up about his flirtatious relationship with his Saltburn costar Jacob Elordi.

“I’m really flirtin’,” Keoghan said. “It ain’t just for the cameras and the premiere[s] … We’ve just done a movie where we had to kiss, man. Look at the scenes we’ve done. You have to be comfortable with yourself.”

HBO’s The Last of Us just cast a major character for the Emmy-winning show’s second season.

Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever will be playing Abby, familiar to players of The Last of Us Part II, the follow-up to the blockbuster video game on which the show is based.

HBO calls Abby “a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved.”

In the announcement, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the acclaimed show’s co-creators as well as co-writers/directors, said, “Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material.”

Druckmann is the co-creator of the hit Naughty Dog game series.

Perhaps referring to the physical differences between Dever and the muscular Abby in the game, they add, “Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro [Pascal], Bella [Ramsey] and the rest of our family.”

Pascal plays Joel, who’s charged with ferrying Ramsey’s Ellie across a United States that has been ravaged by a veritable zombie apocalypse.

The Last of Us‘ second season is said to be adapted from the second game: Set five years after the original, that installment saw Joel taking a back seat as gamers played both Ellie and Abby, who is in the middle of a fight between her militia members and members of a cult.

It’s not known how closely the second season will hew to the game’s sequel, though viewers of The Last of Us know the show’s heralded first season included Ellie taking bloody and fiery revenge against a religious cannibal cult in Wyoming.

George Orwell‘s dystopian classic will be reaching a new audience, with Audible’s star-studded adaptation of 1984.

Oscar nominees Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy and Cynthia Erivo lend their voices to the project, which will also star the voices of What We Do in the ShadowsNatasia Demetriou and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Chukwudi Iwuji.

Garfield voices the main character Winston in Audible’s version, with Erivo as Julia and Fleabag‘s Andrew Scott as O’Brien. Demetriou voices Mrs. Parsons, and Iwuji portrays Charrington.

For his part, Hardy will lend his unmistakable pipes to Big Brother.

Muse‘s Matt Bellamy will score the project with Ghost of Tsushima award winner Ilan Eshkeri; BAFTA award winner and Ted Lasso veteran Destiny Ekaragha will direct.

The adaptation has the blessing of the Orwell estate, with the legendary author’s son, Richard Blair, calling it “sensational” and the cast “brilliant.”

1984 will debut on Audible on April 4, 2024 — exactly 40 years after the date of Winston’s first diary entry.

This is the way…to the movies: Lucasfilm announces ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ feature film
Luscasfilm

In a surprise announcement on Tuesday, Lucasfilm confirmed the rumors that the next chapter of the Emmy-winning Star Wars series The Mandalorian will indeed unfold on the big screen, not Disney+.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will begin production in 2024, directed by Mando creator, writer and executive producer Jon Favreau and produced by the show’s executive producer Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

For the uninitiated, Grogu is the canonical name of the character still referred to as Baby Yoda.

In a statement, Favreau enthused, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

There hasn’t been a Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019’s Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which drew to a close the financially successful but divisive sequel trilogy.

Last year, Lucasfilm announced Star Wars projects that were to get the franchise back on the big screen instead of Disney+, which is home to Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, the celebrated and Emmy-nominated Andor and the recently-wrapped Ahsoka.

On tap — as of now — is a film directed by Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘s James Mangold and one from Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s starring the sequel trilogy’s Daisy Ridley. Also, there’s a rumored movie helmed by Ahsoka creator Filoni himself that will feature characters seen in Ahsoka and the other Disney+ Star Wars shows he helped create.
