The first teaser trailer for the Amy Winehouse biopic,Back to Black, has arrived.
In the film, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, actress Marisa Abela plays the late British star, who died in 2011 at the age of 27 after years of struggling with substance abuse. Set to the Winehouse hit that gives the film its name, Abela as Amy states, “I don’t write songs to be famous, I write songs because I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t.”
We also see her getting her hair styled into her now-iconic beehive, getting one of her many tattoos, singing onstage and in the studio, winning awards, being chased by the paparazzi, exchanging glances with then-husband Blake Fielder-Civil and telling someone on the phone, “You gotta remember: I ain’t no Spice Girl.”
“I want people to hear my voice and just forget their troubles,” says Abela as Amy. “I wanna be remembered for just being me.”
The trailer description says the film “honors Amy’s artistry, wit, and honesty, as well as trying to understand her demons.” It also gives us “an unflinching look at the modern celebrity machine and a powerful tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent.”
Abela has recorded and will perform many of Winehouse’s hits in the film, which is being made with the blessing and support of the late singer’s record label and publishing company.
Back to Black will open in U.K. theaters on April 12 and then will debut internationally.

With a smiling photo of himself on location Wednesday, Jeremy Renner told his fans he’s back at work on the gritty drama Mayor of Kingstown — nearly a year to the day he was almost killed in a snowplow accident.
“Day one on set … nervous today,” the two-time Oscar nominee said. “Hope this works out that I can ACTUALLY pull this off for our production and more importantly the fans.” He tagged both the show’s Instagram and that of Paramount+.
For its part, the streaming service replied by teasing, “It’s going to be the best season yet.”
Renner plays bruising town fixer Mike McLusky on the show, which was co-created by Yellowstone‘s Taylor Sheridan.
The series centers on Mike and his family, “power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry.”
The second season of the acclaimed drama is one of the top performing original dramas on the streaming service overall — third, in fact, behind hitmaker Sheridan’s own 1923 and Tulsa King.
Renner was gravely injured when he was pulled under a snowplow outside of his Nevada home on January 1, 2023. He suffered dozens of broken bones and other injuries, and has tracked his miraculous recovery over the year on social media.
Even in the earliest days of Renner’s recovery, he was also on socials promoting Mayor of Kingstown‘s second season premiere, which was weeks after his accident, on January 15 of last year.
Bachelor franchise host Jesse Palmer welcomed his first child — a girl — with his wife Emily Fardo on Wednesday.
“Our worlds have been forever changed… She’s finally here… ELLA REINE PALMER,” the couple shared in a joint Instagram post, along with a photo of Jesse and Emily, who’s cradling their daughter. “Our hearts are overflowing with love and gratitude.”
Bachelor Nation stars past and present shared well-wishes in the comments section, including Bachelor in Paradise season 9’s Kylee Russell, who wrote, “Congrats Jesse!! Such a beautiful family!”
The newest Bachelor star,Joey Graziadei, added, “Congratulations Jesse! So happy for you guys!”
Susie Evans, Blake Horstmann, Mercedes Northup, and more, also expressed their excitement over the news.
Jesse, 45, and Emily, 34, started dating in 2017. They got engaged in Paris in 2019 and tied the knot 2020 a year later.
Beef actor Young Mazino has been tapped for a role in season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, according to Variety. Mazino will play Jessie, “a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost,” per the outlet. Mazino is the latest season 2 addition, following Kaitlyn Dever. The Last of Us‘ second season is said to be adapted from the second game — set five years after the original, which saw Joel taking a back seat as gamers played both Ellie and Abby, who is in the middle of a fight between her militia members and members of a cult …
Licorice Pizza filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson has locked in Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn for his as-yet-untitled upcoming film, set to begin production this year, joining previously announced Regina Hall, according to Variety. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the outlet has learned that the project “has a contemporary setting and will be an ensemble piece” …
AMC has dropped the first trailer for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, the sixth Walking Dead spinoff. The Ones Who Live is set after the conclusion of the original The Walking Dead series, with Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira and Pollyanna McIntosh reprising their roles as Rick Grimes, Michonne and Jadis Stokes, respectively. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live premieres February 25 on AMC and AMC+ …
All five episodes of Marvel Studios’ new series Echo are now available for streaming on Disney+.
The show spins off Alaqua Cox‘s deaf assassin Maya Lopez/Echo from Disney+’s Hawkeye, but many fans were surprised to learn the new show would be released under the new, more mature Marvel Spotlight banner.
Director and executive producer Sydney Freeland tells ABC Audio, “We saw the trailer launch and, for myself, just because I’ve been living with this for so long, you don’t think about how different that impact might be, you know?”
She adds with a laugh, “And then … I was texting with my producer and we were like, ‘The comments! The comments!'”
Freeland expresses, “When we initially came on board the project, I think one of the most interesting aspects about the character to me was the fact that she was a villain, you know?”
“And then having the conversations with Marvel … the response was … ‘Let’s see how far we can push the envelope,'” because Maya’s story is “more grounded” and “a little on the grittier side.”
Vincent D’Onofrio reprises as the brutal crime lord Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, who acted as an uncle to Maya in her youth. Freeland says, “You had two actors on opposite ends of the experience spectrum, right? You had Alaqua … this is her first real production, aside from a few days in Hawkeye. And then you’ve got Vincent, who has … worked with Stanley Kubrick and he’s done hundreds of episodes of television.”
She adds, “You put the two of them in … a room together. And they just they just click and they just vibe.”
Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, the directors who brought us “Barbenheimer” — that is, the two blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer — were recognized Wednesday with nominations for the 76th annual Directors Guild Awards.
This year’s list also included Martin Scorsese for his period crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon, Alexander Payne for The Holdovers and Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things.
As the Oscars race gains steam, all five films were also recognized at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, with acting trophies going to Oppenheimer‘s Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. Nolan won for Best Director, while his movie also took the night’s prize for Best Film (Drama).
Emma Stone was given a Best Actress award for Poor Things, which also took the top prize for film in the Musical or Comedy category. Paul Giamatti won Best Actor in a Comedy and Da’Vine Joy Randolph Best Supporting Actress for their work in The Holdovers.
Lily Gladstone, meanwhile, took the Golden Globes’ only trophy for Flower Moon.
The DGA also recognized this year’s crop of filmmakers in the running for the Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film:
Cord Jefferson – American Fiction
Manuela Martelli – Chile ‘76
Noora Niasari – Shayda
Celine Song – Past Lives
A.V. Rockwell – A Thousand and One
The winners will be announced at the 76th annual DGA Awards on Saturday, February 10, at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
In a statement, Directors Guild of America President Lesli Linka Glatter praised the “incredible group of gifted storytellers,” whose films “fused technical prowess with unique artistic visions that captured the depth of the human experience and left an indelible impact on audiences around the world.”
While walking the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday evening, Jennifer Lopez was caught on camera meeting a very enthusiastic fan — who happened to be “overwhelmed” Oscar winner Brie Larson.
In the meeting caught by Entertainment Tonight, Larson was in tears, telling the recording artist and actress that seeing her in Selena “made me want to be an actor.”
“Don’t make me cry!” Lopez said as the pair embraced.
To Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Lopez talked about the viral moment, saying, “It brings tears to my eyes now because it’s very moving.”
“You give your heart and soul to this when you’re an artist,” Lopez continued. “I remember being a little girl and watching West Side Story and seeing Rita Moreno and knowing what that meant for me.”
JLo said of the random meeting, “When I was looking at Brie and I saw her and I was just staring in her eyes because she was so locked in with me and just like, ‘I have wanted to tell you this for so long.’ I saw myself, I saw myself and I saw the little girl, and to think that I did that for somebody was really, really overwhelming.”
Lopez added, “I don’t think I ever imagined that I would have an experience like that with somebody who is so talented, and who I watch their movies, and who … is kind of in a way, my contemporary, even to feel that way and … to be so kind to express it, too.”
Jennifer said the moment meant “probably even more [to me] than it did to her.”
Ahead of the next week’s announcement of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards nominees, the organization has revealed the hopefuls for this year’s Rising Star award.
This year’s nominees are newly-minted The Bear Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri, Bridgerton alumna Phoebe Dynevor, Saltburn heartthrob Jacob Elordi, Talk to Me‘s Sophie Wilde and English actress Mia McKenna-Bruce from the film Persuasion.
Now in its 19th year, the honor, technically named the EE Rising Star Award, is the only award from the annual BAFTA event where the public gets to vote on the winner.
The five nominees were chosen by an entertainment industry jury comprised of actors, directors, producers and casting directors.
Steve Martin has come out to defend fellow comedian — and awards show host — Jo Koy after his shaky stint as host of Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards.
“I tip my hat to anyone who steps out on stage to host a live awards show,” Martin wrote on Threads Tuesday.
Martin, referring to the last time he hosted the Academy Awards alongside Alec Baldwin, added, “It’s a very difficult job and not for the squeamish. I know because I’m still throwing up from the last time I did it in 2010.”
He continued, “So, Congratulations to Jo Koy who took on the toughest gig in show business, hit, missed, was light on his feet, and now has twenty minutes of new material for his stand up!”
That said, the Only Murders in the Building star’s chin-up post struck a sour note with some online — likely because the joke Koy admitted went “flat” was a benign jab at Taylor Swift.
“Don’t treat him like a 5 year old boy who just had his first theatre play,” one reply to Martin read. “We’re talking about a grown a** man … If in 10 days all you can come up with are mysoginistic [sic] and sexist remarks maybe you chose the wrong profession.”
But Whoopi Goldberg, who hosted the Oscars multiple times, agreed with Martin’s take, explaining on The View Tuesday, “Hosting gigs are just brutal…You’re sort of thrust out there, it’s hit or miss.”
For his part, Koy told GMA 3 on Monday that he had an “off night,” saying of the criticism, “I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt.”
He expressed that despite it all, he will “always remember” having the chance to host the show.
