75th Emmys: Memorable moments

Monday night’s 75th Emmy Awards had its share of must-see TV moments, from reunions and tributes to classic shows, to speeches and presenters who rose above. Here are some of the moments that got people talking:

Pedro Pascal earned the only bleep of the night. Before he presented the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy, the actor, who was sporting a sling, decided to “make the moment about me.” He explained people have been asking about his arm, and he clarified the injury was to his shoulder, and occurred when “Kieran Culkin beat the s*** out of me.” The comment, which was censored, led to a cut of Culkin staring daggers at Pedro, until the Succession star finally broke, laughing.

It was an apparent callback to Culkin’s Golden Globe win, where he mentioned to his fellow nominee, “Suck it, Pedro.”

Christina Applegate received a standing ovation when she walked to the mic, with a cane, and with some assistance. The Dead to Me and Married with Children vet — who has MS — was emotional, and joked to the crowd that they were “totally shaming me [and my] disability by standing up.” She also quipped of herself, “Body not by Ozempic.”

— Surprisingly, the only mention of Jo Koy‘s drubbed hosting stint of the Golden Globes came during a riff from presenters and Community vets Joel McHale and Ken Jeong. McHale claimed — falsely — that Jeong’s medical license had been revoked because he “killed a guy” by “leaving instruments” in the patient.

Jeong countered saying those instruments were left by the nurses, and his instruments saved the patient — an oblique reference to Koy’s claim that the Globes jokes he wrote were getting laughs, but those his writers penned fell flat.

Kieran Culkin took off his jacket as he accepted the Lead Actor in a Drama Series trophy for Succession — and evidently he should keep it off: He shouted out his wife Jazz Charton and their two kids, saying “I want more!” He added, “You said maybe, if I won!”

— The night’s most talked about on-stage kiss came not from a celebrity couple, but between real-life chef Matty Matheson, who plays fix-it man Neil on The Bear, and one of the show’s previous Emmy winners, Ebon Moss-Bachrach. After The Bear was named Outstanding Comedy Series, Moss-Bachrach surprised Matheson from behind, and their extended comedic snog brought the house down.

Succession and The Bear were both top Emmy winners on Monday, January 15: Each show won six trophies, including Succession‘s win for Outstanding Drama and The Bear‘s win for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Succession’s win was its third Emmy for Outstanding Drama. “This is a show about family, but it’s also about when partisan news coverage gets intertwined with divisive right-wing politics,” creator Jesse Armstrong shared in his speech.

He then joked, “After four seasons of satire, as I understand it, that’s a problem we have now fixed, so we can now depart the stage.”

Meanwhile, The Bear took home the Outstanding Comedy award for its debut season.

“I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole,” cast member and chef Matty Matheson said during his speech. He was then cut off by his co-star and the night’s Supporting Actor winner, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who planted a big, fat kiss on his lips.

Following the smooch, Matheson, who plays Neil Fak on show, continued, “I just love restaurants so much: the good, the bad. It’s rough. We’re all broken inside and every single day, we’ve got to show up and cook and make people feel good by eating something … and it’s really beautiful.”

“And all of us here get to make a show together and we get to make people feel good or filled with anxiety or triggered,” he added, and then noted excitedly, “I’ve never acted before! I love all these people so much!”

Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won the Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, respectively, at Monday’s 75th annual Emmy Awards.

The pair won for playing siblings Roman and Siobhan Roy in the fourth and final season of HBO’s Succession.

Nominated alongside Culkin were his Succession co-stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. Jeff Bridges, Bob Odenkirk and Pedro Pascal were also up for the award. After his name was called, Culkin shared a celebratory kiss with his wife, Jazz Charton, before giving Cox a big smooch right on the lips.

As Culkin took the stage to accept the prize, he removed his suit jacket and threw it on the ground. “Don’t pick it up, I couldn’t do the button,” he told presenter Calista Flockhart.  During his speech, he enthusiastically thanked his wife for their children, and proposed expanding their family.

“Jazz, I want more,” Kieran told her. “You said maybe, if I win!”

Nominated alongside Snook were Sharon Horgan, Melanie Lynskey, Elisabeth Moss, Bella Ramsey and Keri Russell.

After accepting her award, Snook thanked her daughter, with whom she was pregnant while filming the final season of Succession.

“I carried her with me in this last season, and really, it was her who carried me. It’s very easy to act when you’re pregnant because you’ve got hormones raging,” Snook said. “It was more that the proximity of her life growing inside me gave me the strength to do this performance.”

“I love you so much,” Snook added. “And it’s all for you from here on out. Thank you.”

It was a big night for Beef at the Emmys. The show took home the trophy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, one of five awards it won during the telecast.

The drama beat out Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Daisy Jones & The Six, Fleishman Is In Trouble and Obi-Wan Kenobi for the award.

While accepting the trophy, the show’s creator Lee Sung Jin, who earlier in the evening won Outstanding Directing and Writing for Beef, mentioned that some of the themes of the series were based on things that he and those who worked on it “have struggled with over the years.”

“So I’m really grateful and humbled by everyone who watched the show and reached out about their own personal struggles. It’s very life affirming,” he shared. “I feel like we live in a world designed to try and keep us separate. I think for some of us when we live in a world like this, you begin to think that there’s no way anyone can ever understand you or like you, or much less, even, you know, no potential at being loved.”

“The greatest joy of working on Beef has been the folks up here who love so unconditionally,” he added.

On a lighter note, he ended his speech by giving a shout out to his pooches, sharing, “Everything I do is for my three dogs. So, the Federal Drug Administration please fast track that canine anti-aging pill. That would be so lovely.”

In addition to winning Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and the Outstanding Directing and Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series awards, Beef’s stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun took home trophies for Best Actress and Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, respectively.

While reading the nominees for the Emmys Variety Special (Live) on Monday night, January 15, presenter Amy Poehler said of nominee Elton John, “EGOT to be excited about this.” That’s because a win would give the rock legend that much-coveted awards milestone — and whaddya know: It did.

Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, the live Disney+ special documenting Elton’s final North American concert, won the Emmy, making Elton an EGOT.  He now has one Emmy, two Oscars, a Tony Award and six Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

Or perhaps we should say he has a “KNEEGOT”?  At the podium, executive producer Ben Winston said that Elton wasn’t able to make it to the ceremony because he had to have a knee operation — he’s fine, though.  Winston gave a special shout-out to Elton’s husband David Furnish, crediting him for having the “creative vision” for the live special, and praised Elton as “all of our heroes.”

Elton is the 19th person ever to achieve a competitive EGOT. Others who’ve done it include John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Rita Moreno and Whoopi Goldberg.  Six additional people have won an EGOT with noncompetitive or honorary awards.

In a statement, Elton said, “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world.”

He added, “Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”

Paul Walter Hauser can add Emmy winner to his resume. The actor took home the award for Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role of convicted serial killer Larry Hall in the Apple TV+ series Black Bird.

After acknowledging the cast of Grey’s Anatomy who presented the award, telling them, “my wife loves your show,” he gave a shout out to his fellow nominees, sharing “that’s a talent pool if I ever saw one.”

Hauser then proceeded to rap his acceptance speech, which included a mention of the show’s creator Dennis Lehane and costar Taron Egerton, noting, “their talent could move boulders, if I look tall it’s cause I’m standing on both of their shoulders.”

He also gave a shout out to the late actor Ray Liotta, his Black Bird co-star who was also nominated in the category, sharing, “to the Rolex Ray Liotta, we’re down here wearing Fossils.”

Hauser certainly had some stiff competition in the category. In addition to Liotta, his fellow nominees included Murray Bartlett for Welcome to Chippendales, Richard Jenkins for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Joseph Lee for Beef, Young Mazino for Beef and Jesse Plemons for Love & Death.

“I’m a winner, baby!” she proudly declared through tears on stage, before thanking Netflix, her co-stars, her wife and the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, “for seeing me.”

“And you know who I want to thank? I want to thank me … for believing in me and doing what they said I could not do!” she added. “And I want to say to myself, in front of all you beautiful people: ‘Go on girl with your bad self — you did that!’”

She then got serious, noting, “I accept this award on behalf of every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard, yet over-policed,” mentioning her the real-life woman she portrayed in Monster, Glenda Cleveland, as well as Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor

“As an artist, my job is to speak truth to power,” she concluded. “And baby, I’m gonna do it ’til the day I die!”
