It’s almost showtime for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. The Oscars air live Sunday on ABC, and the producers are putting the final touches on the show.

At a news conference Wednesday, executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor said “connection” is the theme of the night.

“I want them to feel connected to some of the films. I want them to feel connected to some of the performances, and to all these human stories that we’re telling throughout the evening,” he explains.

This year’s ceremony marks the fourth go-round for executive producer Molly McNearney and her host/husband Jimmy Kimmel, which she said makes Jimmy “more and more comfortable,” while she’s “more and more nervous.”

“It’s kind of our dynamic. I think that Jimmy just has really become very relaxed as a host,” she shared. “He knows the room really well. He has a lot of respect for the room and likes to have fun with them.”

“He will obsess now over every joke,” she adds. “He has a rough outline of the monologue that I read this morning that I think is brilliant. I know it will change six more times before Sunday.”

As for McNearney, she’s focused on making sure everyone in the room feels comfortable.

“I think some of the best moments in these shows are the acceptance speeches,” she says. “Last year I cried at almost every one of them, and I think that making people feel like … we’re all celebrating each other [allows] people to be themselves and be authentic onstage.”

“Everybody loves reunions, so there might be some of those,” notes executive producer Katy Mullan. “Movies are so nostalgic and there’s so much history making around the Oscars. So there’ll be moments of that … and then some surprise cameos, as well.”

‘Rust’ armorer found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in on-set shooting

Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The jury deliberated for more than two hours on Wednesday before reaching a verdict.

The judge ordered that Gutierrez be remanded into custody following the verdict. She faces up to 18 months in prison with the conviction.

Jurors found her not guilty of tampering with evidence in the case.

Prosecutors told jurors that Gutierrez “repeatedly” failed to maintain proper firearm safety and that her negligence led to the death of Hutchins, while the defense countered that the 26-year-old is a “convenient scapegoat” during closing arguments in the trial on Wednesday.

During the two-week trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, prosecutors presented evidence they said shows Gutierrez was responsible for bringing six live rounds onto the set — and did not discover them for 12 days before the deadly shooting by failing to perform industry standard safety practices.

Actor Alec Baldwin was practicing a cross-draw in a church on the set of the Western film on Oct. 21, 2021, when the Colt .45 revolver fired a live round, striking Hutchins and director Joel Souza, who suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

Baldwin has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death. His trial is scheduled to start in July.

Emmy-winning Rothaniel comedian Jerrod Carmichael is back — and he’s not holding back — in the trailer to the HBO Original comedy docuseries Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show

“I’m trying to self-Truman Show myself,” the comic states in the snippet for the eight-episode half-hour show, which the network calls “a darkly funny documentary series about Jerrod’s tumultuous quest for love, sex, and truth.”

To that end, Jerrod is shown speaking to his dad about when he revealed his sexuality to his parents. “When I came out, y’all acted like someone died,” Jerrod says. “It hurt my feelings.”

He adds, “Mom basically said I was going to hell.”

The scene cuts to his mom saying, “I didn’t write The Bible.”

Mother and son later pray together, holding hands, with his mother attempting to pray the gay away for Jerrod.

“Being honest is cool until you have a reason to lie,” Jerrod says elsewhere in the clip, which also shows him speaking with a masked man whose voice is distorted.

Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show debuts on HBO Friday, March 29, at 11 p.m. ET. It will also be available for streaming on Max.

Oscar winner Helen Mirren served as the narrator for the blockbuster Barbie, and now in a full-circle moment, she has become a Barbie herself.

Ahead of Friday’s International Women’s Day, Mattel just unveiled its Role Models line.

The figures of the famous women were made to introduce “girls to remarkable women’s stories to show them you can be anything.”

EGOT winner Viola Davis was also celebrated, as were recording artists Shania Twain and Kylie Minogue; Mexican writer-director Lila Avilés; Japanese model and TV personality Nicole Fujita; German comedian Enissa Amani; and Indigenous content creator Maira Gomez.

Mirren was singled out not only for her acting work, but as a “patron of a number of organisations supporting women and children” and as an “advocate for embracing and celebrating self-expression, aging and fashion.”

Mirren said she was “absolutely blown away” by her Barbie, adding in part, “To be chosen … as a Role Model is a huge compliment, and something I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams happening to me at this stage in my life. “

She enthused, “The cherry on top of the cake is my doll having a miniature Oscar. It is an absolutely perfect reproduction.”

Davis, too, was hailed for her day job as a performer and also her philanthropy; her commitment to fighting childhood hunger and supporting social justice was highlighted, as was her JuVee Productions company’s “focus on giving a voice to the voiceless through strong, impactful narratives.”

“Honestly, I wanted this Barbie to make little 6-year-old Viola squeal,” the star commented. “It is my biggest gift to her … my lifelong mission and legacy to make her feel pretty, seen, and worthy. No words … just joy.”

On his Instagram, Jake Gyllenhaal confirmed that he and Oscar winner Denzel Washington will be taking to the stage in a production of William Shakespeare‘s classic Othello on Broadway.

“Can’t wait,” Jake wrote of the project, which will be directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon, who called the shots for Denzel’s Tony-winning performance of Fences in 2010. Leon also directed Washington in a 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

The curtain will go up sometime in 2025, with Washington in the title role of the jealous soldier, and Gyllenhaal as the scheming Iago, who sets in motion the tragic downfall of the decorated veteran.

Fans can sign up for ticket information here.

The play will be staged at a New York City Shubert Organization theater. The exact venue and further casting will be revealed at a later date.

While Denzel’s last Broadway stand was in 2018, in the revival of the classic The Iceman Cometh, Jake was last on the boards in 2019’s Sea Wall/A Life, earning a Tony nomination.

Washington last danced with the Bard in an acclaimed rendition of The Tragedy of Macbeth, which was in theaters and Apple TV+ in 2022, and which earned him his 10th Oscar nomination; he first played Othello as a college student at New York’s Fordham University.

Netflix may have just canceled its Michelle Yeoh-led series The Brothers Sun after just one season, but on Wednesday, it gave a huge vote of confidence to another big show.

The streamer just renewed its live-action series based on the beloved anime Avatar: The Last Airbender for seasons 2 and 3.

The live-action reimagining of the animated hit follows Gordon Cormier‘s Aang, “the young Avatar, who must master the four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) to restore balance to a world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation,” per the producers.

Since the show’s Netflix debut on February 22, Netflix says Avatar: The Last Airbender was its top English TV show, with 41.1 million views in just the first 11 days. The series ranked #1 in 76 countries and placed in the top 10 on its global rankings in 92.

Additionally, the streamer says the show was a huge hit online: User-generated content drew 1 billion impressions on TikTok’s #AvatarTheLastAirbender hashtag alone in the first week of release.

Incidentally, cast member Daniel Dae Kim broke the good news in a “cruel” prank on his fellow stars during a Zoom call.

He first told them, “Netflix told me they are not able to announce a season 2 for our show,” hinting the show was canceled.

As the disappointment washed over his co-stars’ faces, he then revealed, “They are able to announce a season 2 and 3.”

At that, they rejoiced, with Comier stating of the prank, “That is EVIL, man!”

Prime Video has just dropped the trailer to the Anne Hathaway romantic film The Idea of You

Based on Robinne Lee‘s bestselling 2017 novel, co-producer and star Hathaway plays Solène, a divorced, 40-year-old single mom who finds herself in a relationship with Hayes (Nicholas Galitzine), the 24-year-old star of the biggest boy band in the world, August Moon.

The trailer shows their meet-cute at the Coachella festival when she accidentally ends up in Hayes’ trailer, and the chance meeting inspires him to serenade her onstage.

He later meets up with her at her art gallery with paparazzi shooting every moment from across the street.

“I’m too old for you,” Solène says during a romantic moment between the two, to which Hayes declares, “No you’re not” and gives her a tender kiss that takes her breath away.

As the pair gets closer, she finds herself caught in the media frenzy of a civilian dating a pop star. “I had no idea my being happy would p*** so many people off,” Solène confides to a friend. “Did I not warn you? People hate happy women,” her pal replies sarcastically.

The film will close the SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 16 and will drop on the streaming service on May 2.

Apple TV+ dropped the trailer to STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces on Wednesday, about the long and influential career of Steve Martin.

The coming attraction shows Steve’s early stand-up days when he became “a cultural phenomenon.”

Jerry Seinfeld describes him as “the most idolized comedian ever,” while another interviewee credited Martin with “reinventing stand-up.”

“All comedy was political, and I felt it was time to change that,” Martin said of his Wild and Crazy Guy days.

Punctuated by the accomplished banjo player’s music, the trailer also shows Martin launching “into the stratosphere” as the star of big-screen hits like The Jerk, Parenthood, Father of the Bride and the Cheaper by the Dozen films.

“I was scared out of my mind,” Martin admits.

As the title suggests, the movie pivots to his later-in-life reinvention, thanks to hits like Only Murders in the Building. “My whole life is backwards,” Steve states. “How did I go from being riddled with anxiety in my 30s, to being 75 and really happy?” he asks rhetorically.

Featuring appearances by Tina Fey, Martin’s pal and Only Murders co-star Martin Short and more, STEVE streams on Apple TV+ on March 29.

James Gunn finds “solitude” for Superman in Norway

Warner Bros. Discovery

Some of the first shots of James Gunn‘s anticipated Superman film were shot in Norway.

The snowy vistas of Svalbard’s Advent Valley on the island of Spitsbergen were chosen as the location of the Fortress of Solitude, the secret hideaway of David Corenswet‘s Man of Steel, Gunn tells the local publication Svalbardposten.

“We’ve filmed the first scenes, which are when Superman flees to the ice fortress,” he explained to the Norwegian language publication. “We wanted a place that was beautiful and that felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, and therefore looked at more places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us rather than the other places.”

He added, “First, there is the natural beauty. But also the fact that you will find a varied landscape here that you will not find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

Gunn hinted at the first location days ago, with an Instagram shot of Superman’s chest emblem dusted with snow.

He explained the locals have been “curious” about Hollywood’s visit to the area. “We’ve had some people who have been curious, yes, who have stood by and watched, but that’s okay,” he said, noting it’s “completely different than when you have people trying to sneak into the set to take pictures that they can monetize by selling online.”

Gunn may have to deal with that when the shooting transitions back to the States, including a stop in Ohio. The director reportedly flew back to the U.S. on Tuesday to work on other scenes while shooting wrapped in Norway.

Superman is set for release July 11, 2025.
