Robots and AI, friend or foe? That’s one of the issues at the heart of the new Apple TV+ series Sunny, which stars Rashida Jones as a woman who loses her husband and son in a plane crash, though everything is not as it seems.

The darkly comedic series, which debuts Wednesday, is set in Japan in the near future, when everyone has robot helpers in their homes. But Jones tells ABC Audio that it delves into the human condition, as well.

“We’re having this, like, very large, global conversation about AI and what it means,” she says. “But it’s really a conversation about humanity. … What do we mean to each other? … Like, is there some giant existential threat to, like, how we deal with each other? And is that all wrapped up in, like, this robot?”

Jones says the show will leave viewers conflicted: “Why would we invite something into our world that … we still kind of question, you know, whether or not it’s good for us and is, like, ultimately dangerous and maybe violent? But that’s maybe true with people, too.”

Sunny, the helper in the series, was an actual robot, which Rashida says was hard to not think of being real.

“All of a sudden you’re, like, relating to something and it’s very easy to see that thing as something real and sentient when it’s, like, smiling or it’s looking at you, you know, with its sad eyes or wanting eyes or whatever it is like. It just changes the whole thing.”

Sunny is set in Japan, where Jones lived for six months while filming, and there was one custom she brought back with her to the U.S.

“Definitely do not wear shoes in my house anymore. Ever again.”

Her character, Meredith Grey, may have left Grey Sloan Memorial for a research job in Boston, but neither she nor Ellen Pompeo have strayed too far: ABC Audio has confirmed that Pompeo will return to Grey’s Anatomy for at least seven episodes of the ABC medical drama’s 21st season.

This comes after she appeared in five episodes in season 20, despite her character’s emotional send-off in the season prior.

It was revealed ahead of season 19’s premiere that Pompeo would be limiting her role on the show, appearing in only eight episodes while staying on as executive producer and continuing to provide voice-over narration for the program.

In 2019, Grey‘s became the longest-running primetime medical drama in TV history. The Shonda Rhimes-produced program is the longest running prime-time series in ABC history.

Netflix just announced that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the fourth film in Eddie Murphy‘s franchise, arrested some 41 million views worldwide in its first week on the streaming service.

The action comedy, which also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kevin Bacon and Taylour Paige, debuted at the top spot for English language movies worldwide, with 80 million hours viewed globally.

Axel F is also in the top 10 for English movies in 93 countries.

In the English TV category, while the third season of Netflix’s Bridgerton might have slipped to #4 after eight weeks on the streamer, the Regency-era hit’s third year is steadily climbing the charts of Netflix’s Most Popular TV top-10 list.

For the week of July 1 through July 7, the third season scored an additional 4 million views, bringing its total to 95,800,000 — good enough for #8 on the ranking, two slots above Bridgerton: Season 2

The first season of Shonda Rhimes‘ romantic hit, which was released in December 2020, remains the fourth most-viewed show in the streamer’s history, with 113,300,000 views.

Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Conversation, a 1974 film that arguably would have been the pinnacle of many filmmakers’ careers, but which Coppola just happened to sandwich between his Oscar-winning epics The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, is returning to theaters.

The filmmaker announced on Tuesday that he’s undertaken an all-new 4K restoration of the Oscar-nominated movie starring Gene Hackman, Cindy Williams, Teri Garr, Robert Duvall and Harrison Ford.

A new trailer promotes the restoration that will screen at New York’s IFC Center and Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles on Aug. 9, the 50th anniversary of Richard Nixon‘s resignation.

The date is apropos considering the so-called Watergate tapes led to Nixon’s downfall, and Hackman plays a surveillance expert whose bugging of a seemingly innocuous conversation accidentally exposes a deadly conspiracy.

Coppola explained in the announcement, “I have never offered a new version of The Conversation, which is a film I have always been proud of, I’ve never felt the need to improve.” He hailed his “wonderful collaboration with its editor … and sound designer, Walter Murch, which reinforces my belief that cinema is a collaborative effort.”

Another editor, Richard Chew, who went on to win an Oscar for editing Star Wars, was also mentioned, as he and Murch were nominated for The Conversation. “I am gratified to have made a film that has lived for 50 years,” Coppola concluded.

There will still be a movie made about the diminutive doll Polly Pocket from Mattel Films, but after three years working on it and writing a script, Lena Dunham tells The New Yorker it won’t be her who is making it after all.

Part of her reasoning for backing out of the project, which still has Lily Collins attached as a star and co-producer, apparently was the success Greta Gerwig had in turning another Mattel toy, Barbie, into an Oscar-contending blockbuster.

“I think Greta managed this incredible feat, which was to make this thing that was literally candy to so many different kinds of people and was perfectly and divinely Greta,” the Girls alumna said, adding, “unless I can do it that way, I’m not going to do it.”

Lena admitted, “I don’t think I have that in me.”

She added, “I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make Polly Pocket.”

For the record, there’s apparently no ill will between Mattel and Dunham, with the former telling Entertainment Weekly, “We look forward to sharing updates on the project soon. Lena is a remarkable writer and creator and we wish her all the best!”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is expecting her first child.

Blanchard announced her pregnancy in an Instagram post Tuesday, featuring a photo collage of her alongside her boyfriend, Ken Urker, and holding an ultrasound picture.

Blanchard wrote in part in the caption, “We are proud to announce we are expecting our first child in January 2025.”

Blanchard revealed in her YouTube video that she is 11 weeks along in her pregnancy.

“This was not planned at all. It was completely unexpected but we’re both very excited to take on this new journey of parenthood,” Blanchard said.

Blanchard went on to share that she has experienced various pregnancy symptoms, from craving orange juice to mood swings and tiredness, but doesn’t have significant morning sickness.

“So far, pregnancy has been a breeze as far as symptoms. I find the tiredness is starting to wear off a little bit. That was the biggest symptom that I had,” the 32-year-old said.

“The baby looks healthy, happy. I know it’s still going to be a long journey ahead but I’m up for it,” she added.

Blanchard, a controversial figure, also went on to reference critics in her video message. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for plotting to have her mother, Clauddinnea “Dee Dee” Blanchard, killed and served more than eight years in prison before she was released in December 2023. She was also previously married to Ryan Scott Anderson, but they divorced earlier this year.

“I know that there are going to be people that feel like I’m not ready to be a mother and … I don’t know if anyone’s really ready to become a mother. … I think, in my experience, everybody that I’ve ever talked to, they’re like, it just happened,” Blanchard said.

“Warriors! Come out and (press) playyy…” Hamilton creator and everything-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is reportedly looking to the 1979 cult classic The Warriors as inspiration for his latest musical project.

Bloomberg is reporting the EGOT-winner will be creating a musical concept album based on Walter Hill‘s film, which centered on various clashing themed street gangs in New York City, including the titular one, as well as others including The Gramercy Riffs, The Baseball Furies, and The Orphans.

Playwright Eisa Davis is co-writing the album with Miranda, according to the publication, possibly putting the project on the track of other concept albums-turned-stage musicals like Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Who‘s Tommy.

The popularity of The Warriors continues to this day, through merchandising and cosplay, and comic con autograph signings with the cast, which included Michael Beck, James Remar, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh.

In 2015, Rolling Stone gathered some of the onscreen gang members for a short film The Warriors: The Last Subway Ride Home.

Fans of ABC’s Bachelor franchise can now see the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine for all the right reasons.

In a new themed spot, Hugh Jackman appears in his full superhero costume, reclining on a sofa, before he protests, “No, no, no, what the hell am I even doing?”

Ryan Reynolds then scoots into frame in character, explaining, “You’re explaining to Bachelor Nation how our movie is the perfect date movie, while holding this,” before sniffing a rose.

“I’m not doing either of those,” Jackman says, standing.

“Yes you are because you are a confident, powerful person and 18-49 year-old women are a super-important demo to us, no cap.”

Jackman turns around, and Reynolds then addresses the Nation, signaling the cameraman to zoom in on Jackman’s super-butt without him knowing.

Meanwhile, Deadpool explains, “Our movie has everything you love: You can really ZOOM IN on complex relationship dynamics. There’s ample amounts of cheeky humor, and I’m not gonna lie, it was quite a payday for us.”

Turns out, Wolverine was only there because Deadpool promised him a chance to meet the newest Bachelorette, Jenn Tran — but DP was lying.

Reynolds posted the spot to social media, captioning it with, “Can I steal HUGH for a second,” mirroring the oft-repeated phrase from the romance reality show.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26 from Marvel Studios, which shares a parent company with ABC News in Disney.

Netflix has premiered a new trailer for the upcoming fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy.

The clip nods to both the show’s impending conclusion and its origins with a soundtrack provided by the My Chemical Romance song “The End.” The Umbrella Academy, of course, is based on the comic book series of the same name created by MCR frontman Gerard Way.

The Umbrella Academy, which premiered in 2019, follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes who reunite after the death of their father, only to find out that the world is soon ending. In attempts to stop the apocalypse, they get involved in time travel, resulting in them losing their powers at the end of season 3 just as the world begins to face its greatest threat yet.

The trailer for the final season hints at the particular importance of Justin H. Min‘s character Ben, who has the ability to summon tentacled monsters.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 premieres August 8 on Netflix. It stars returning cast members Min, Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher and Ritu Arya, along with new additions including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and David Cross.

Box office icon Tom Cruise lent some of his superstar shine to his fellow Top Gun: Maverick veteran Glen Powell‘s forthcoming movie Twisters.

Cruise made an appearance at the movie’s European premiere on Monday night at London’s iconic Leicester Square venue, posting a photo on X with he and Powell, both grinning with popcorn in hand. “Fun night with friends, watching a movie!!” Cruise enthused in the post, which got nearly 7 million views in a matter of hours.

For his part, Powell reposted the pic to Instagram, saying, “When your wingman follows you into the storm.”

Apart from being one of the remaining global box office draws, Cruise is an avowed movie fan, and a die-hard supporter of the theatrical experience. As reported in 2023, he proudly boosted his Mission: Impossible box office competition Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, with another viral movie theater tweet.

Twisters, which also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kiernan Shipka, and Anthony Ramos, opens in theaters July 19. The action movie was based on a story from Cruise and Powell’s Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, and co-produced by Cruise’s old friend and War of the Worlds director Steven Spielberg.
