Josh Gad is opening up about the public response to his portrayal of LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast film.
In the actor’s new memoir, In Gad We Trust: A Tell-Some, he writes about the public backlash he received after his character danced with a man during a musical number in the 2017 film.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Gad wrote he “never once” played LeFou as a gay character, and a “sweet and innocuous moment” of dance choreography was taken out of context.
“I for one certainly didn’t exactly feel like LeFou was who the queer community had been wistfully waiting for,” Gad wrote. “I can’t quite imagine a Pride celebration in honor of the ‘cinematic watershed moment’ involving a quasi-villainous Disney sidekick dancing with a man for half a second. I mean, if I were gay, I’m sure I’d be pissed.”
Gad said he had discussions with director Bill Condon, as well as screenwriters Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos, about the specific nature of LeFou’s feelings for Gaston. Ultimately, Gad wrote, they decided that LeFou was simply in awe of Gaston, “and that was not driven by any sexual desire whatsoever but rather a deep-seated love, appreciation, and belief in this person he had served alongside in battle for many years.”
He also wrote that the team never discussed focusing on LeFou’s sexuality, which “frankly was not a thing to really explore in a random comedic character in the film … or so I thought.”
Through all of this, Gad wrote he would have loved to have played an explicitly gay version of LeFou, but that “never once was the moment in this film described to me as something that we were going to hang a lantern on and pat ourselves on the back for. … It was both too little and not enough to be anything more than it was.”
In Gad We Trust: A Tell-Some is available now. In a Tuesday morning appearance on The View, Gad said he plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from his book to those affected by the wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
There’s double the Robert De Niro in the new trailer for The Alto Knights.
The Oscar winner plays two roles — Vito Genovese and Frank Costello — in the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures film. It arrives in theaters on March 21.
Helmed by Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson, the film follows two of New York City’s most notorious organized crime bosses “as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever,” according to the film’s official logline.
“Where do I start?” De Niro’s Frank Costello asks in the trailer. “You’re going down a very dangerous road.”
“And we ain’t been down dangerous roads before? That’s the risk you take. Me, I take that risk,” the Vito Genovese De Niro responds.
The film was inspired by the true story of the mob boss who brought about the downfall of the American mafia, according to the trailer. It was written by Goodfellas screenwriter and Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi, and produced by Oscar winner IrwinWinkler, who also produced Rocky and Goodfellas.
Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, Katherine Narducci, Michael Rispoli, Michael Adler, Ed Amatrudo, Joe Bacino, Anthony J.Gallo, Wallace Langham, Louis Mustillo, Frank Piccirillo, Matt Serviet and Robert Uricola also star.
Jimmy Kimmel delivered an emotional monologue during the Jan. 13 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! about the “nightmare” situation of the Southern California fires.
“As you know, it has been a very scary, very stressful, very strange week here in LA, where we work, where we live, where our kids go to school,” Kimmel said, getting choked up. “We are back at our studio, which we had to evacuate on Wednesday.”
Video footage then showed a fire close to the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, where the talk show is filmed.
“Many of us had to leave our homes in a hurry. Some of our co-workers lost their homes,” Kimmel said. “It’s been terrible. It’s been terrible. Everyone who lives in the city knows someone, most of us multiple people — families, friends, colleagues, neighbors — whose houses burned down. And the truth is, we don’t even know if it’s over.”
Kimmel continued, “I think I speak for all of us when I say it has been a sickening, shocking, awful experience. But it has also been, in a lot of ways, a beautiful experience, because once again, we see our fellow men and women coming together to support each other. People who lost their own homes were out volunteering in parking lots helping others who lost theirs.”
The host then went on to thank all of the LA firefighters who were “the first on the scene.”
“Without hesitation, they were out there putting out the fires as best they could,” he said, also shouting out firefighters from other states — and countries — for lending a helping hand in the face of the tragedy.
“To our police, our National Guard, our rescue workers, the doctors, the nurses, EMTs, the pilots working 12-hour shifts, thank God for all of you,” Kimmel added. “I also want to thank our local news reporters who reminded us how important local television and radio and newspapers are.”
Kimmel was also critical of some remarks President-elect Donald Trump has made in the wake of the fires, saying he had spread “vile and irresponsible and stupid things … during our darkest and most terrifying hour.”
The Southern California fires began on Jan. 7 and have ravaged thousands of acres throughout the Los Angeles area.
At least 24 people have died, more than a dozen others remain unaccounted for and tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate amid multiple wildfires, which have been fueled by severe drought conditions and strong winds.

Lisa Kudrow has an update on the upcoming Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion sequel.
While guesting on a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Kudrow talked about how the project is coming along.
“We’re as close as we’ve ever been,” Kudrow said. “There’s a script that’s really good, [by] Robin Schiff.”
Barrymore, a big fan of the original film, told Kudrow, “Oh my God, I just got chills. I really did.”
“So it’ll happen, I mean, we’ll see,” Kudrow said in response.
Kudrow played Michele Weinberger in the 1997 comedy film, starring opposite Mia Sorvino‘s Romy White. Elsewhere in the interview, Barrymore said the movie is “so much more than a film” to her.
“It’s a world and I tend to live in it on a daily basis and I certainly quote it every day of my life,” Barrymore said.
Kudrow went on to explain that the film originally came from an “equity waiver play in LA” written by Schiff, who wrote the original film.
“So they had to do a backers audition for the play to see if they could even mount the play,” Kudrow said. “And they went to all the [acting] teachers, ‘Who do you recommend to audition?’ So, you know, I went.”
She said that was her first-ever audition.
“For ‘Airhead No. 2,’ Michele,” Kudrow said. “We were these minor characters. We were onstage a total of seven minutes, in and out, for the whole play.”
Berry announced on Instagram on Jan. 9 that she was donating her entire wardrobe to those in need.
The Oscar winner is collaborating with fellow actress Sharon Stone and +COOP, a home goods store in Beverly Hills, to promote donation efforts, collecting gently used clothing for men, women and children displaced by the fires.
+COOP was founded by real estate agent Jenna Cooper and turned its shop into a temporary fire relief donation collection center amid the deadly wildfires.
“I’m packing up my entire closet and heading over to the COOP! If you live in the Southern California area, I urge you to do the same,” Berry wrote in the caption. “This is something we can do right now today to help all of the displaced families that are in need of the basics today!”
She added, “Thank you @sharonstone for your leadership. Love you Lady.”
The post included a video clip originally shared on Stone’s Instagram account, in which Stone is heard promoting the donation effort.
“We’re at the COOP at 7282 Beverly Blvd., collecting gently used clothing for kids, men, women, children, people that have been displaced and affected by the fire,” she says. “We have beautiful cashmere sweaters, jeans, new socks, shoes, clothes, blankets … you can come and shop, you can also come and donate.”
The LA wildfires have caused significant destruction, resulting in thousands of residents being displaced.
At least 24 people have died and more than a dozen others remain unaccounted for. Firefighters continue to battle the flames, which remain only partially contained, and have been fueled by severe drought conditions and strong winds.
Brooke Shields is sharing the message she hopes readers take away from her new memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.
In an interview with Good Morning America, the actress and model said the book’s message for women is “that this period of their time over 40 is a wonderful time, and it’s all about you.”
“You’ve earned it, and it’s your turn to feel really, really supported by yourself and good about yourself,” she added.
Shields said the biggest misconception about aging as a woman, in her opinion, is that “we’ve had a good run” and that they’re “sort of put out to pasture.”
“Every single woman I know who’s over 40 is absolutely fabulous,” she said. “They are doing new things and they’re empowered in a way that they weren’t ever before.”
Shields also detailed what she has planned for her milestone 60th birthday in May, revealing it might be more low-key than many would expect.
“I’m most looking forward to being able to be in this age with my girls, watching them sort of really come into their own lives,” she said of daughters Rowan and Grier.
Shields said her birthday plans are more likely to include “spending time with my girlfriends” and doing activities like going to the spa or other fun activities “rather than have a big party.”
Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman is out Jan. 14.
