The 77th annual Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles Sunday, with comedian Nate Bargatze hosting the festivities.

The show opened with Bargatze and Saturday Night Live performers Mikey DayBowen Yang and James Austin Johnson resurrecting a popular sketch Bargatze has been featured in when he hosts the comedy show.

It centered around a so-called inventor of television, Filo T Farnsworth, who gave a monologue trying to encourage them to keep working on creating the TV.

“Do not get discouraged. What we create here will one day bring the world shows that inform and educate, shows that make us laugh and cry, and shows about people who when they go to work they switch to different people in their brains, who only remember what happens at work,” he said, a reference to Severance.

When Day noted, “I don’t understand that,” Bargatze joked, “People who watch it won’t either.”

Bargatze also joked about all the different networks that exist and how nobody knows what producers do, and cracked that CBS was the network for white people aka the “Caucasian Broadcasting System.”

There were also cracks about streaming, The Bear not being a comedy, a woman getting to host a talk show — but only on Hacks — and more. They also joked that the Emmy wasn’t as prestigious as an Oscar.

“We create a world where the finest artists create worlds of staggering beauty and millions of people will watch … on their phones while they’re sitting on the toilet,” he ended the monologue. “That is television and this is the Emmys.”

Later Bargatze explained a new rule to keep speeches short during the awards ceremony.

He said he will start the show with a base $100,000 donation to The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and will add or deduct $1,000 based on speeches going over or under 45 seconds.

“Forty-five seconds, that’s what you got,” he said.

Rebecca Cutter created and executive produced the series, which was based on May Cobb‘s 2021 novel. Season 2 will be a continuation of the story from an original script by Cutter.

“I’m so excited to write these amazing characters again,” Cutter told Netflix. “And I can’t wait to take the audience on another sexy, twisted, batshit crazy ride through Maple Brook.”

‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes embraces ‘change’ for ‘Grand Finale’

After six seasons on TV and two movies, Downton Abbey is saying goodbye with a third and final film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Series creator and writer Julian Fellowes says there’s a good reason he decided the story needed one more film.

He tells ABC Audio that after the last movie, where they said goodbye to Maggie Smith‘s Dowager Countess of Grantham, he felt that after 15 years fans needed a goodbye to the rest of the cast.

“I felt they were entitled to have a clearer idea of where they were all headed,” he says, “and that’s what I hope we’ve given them in this film.”

The movie is set in the 1930s, and as the times change, the family and the staff are going through some major changes themselves. Fellowes says he wanted fans to know they were all going to be OK in this new era and were going to “make a place for themselves.”

And while it may have been bittersweet saying goodbye to these characters, Fellowes believes it was the right time to do so.

“Knowing when it’s time to bring something to an end, whether it’s a romance or a TV show, it’s something that, on the whole, it’s good to accept, that everything earthly is finite and the end will come,” he says.

And Fellowes hopes fans come away with a simple message from the film.

“I hope what they take away is that what we all have to do is accept that we must deal with change and that if we can do that, we may be OK. But if we dig in, and refuse to accept change, we won’t be OK.”

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is in theaters now.

‘The Last of Us’ co-creator Neil Druckmann on exiting the HBO series ahead of season 3

The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann is opening up about his decision to exit the HBO series adaptation of his video game.

Druckmann served as co-showrunner of HBO’s The Last of Us before he announced his decision to step away from his creative involvement in the show in July 2025. In a recent interview with Variety, Druckmann said he did not exit the series on a whim. Rather, it was because he accomplished the goal he set out when he began adapting the video game for the screen.

“I had multiple goals, some of them were selfish. I wanted to elevate The Last of Us beyond the people that have played the game,” Druckmann said. “I felt like that story could find a bigger audience for people that will never play video games.”

He called the goal “crazy,” saying he “wanted someone to watch this show and have no idea it was based on the video game, and then be like, ‘Wait, that’s based on a video game?’”

Druckmann says there is data to show that people have watched the show and it led to them buying a PlayStation or a PC to start playing The Last of Us video game.

“That has become this gateway for them, for this medium that I love so much,” Druckmann said.

Now, Druckmann said, his hard work on season 1 and 2 has paid off and it is time to get back to putting his focus on making video games.

“It was time to go back to the thing that started it all, which is just full-time video game work. But other things are coming and we can announce more things soon,” Druckmann said.

HBO renewed The Last of Us for season 3 in April.

There’s nothing little about this Big Little Lies update.

The HBO series is officially returning for a third season, ABC Audio has confirmed. Mr. & Mrs. Smith showrunner Francesca Sloane has been tapped to executive produce season 3 of Big Little Lies and write its first episode.

She takes on executive producing duties along with the series’ creator, David E. Kelley, and its stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

Zoë KravitzLaura Dern and Shailene Woodley also starred in Big Little Lies, which featured Alexander SkarsgårdAdam ScottJames TupperJeffrey Nordling and Meryl Streep as part of its star-studded ensemble cast.

Sloane has signed an exclusive two-year overall TV deal with HBO. She moves from Amazon MGM Studios, where she had previously been under overall deals since 2020. At Amazon MGM Studios, Sloane co-created Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Donald Glover. That series, which was previously greenlit for season 2, has been delayed indefinitely, Deadline reports.

Season 1 of Big Little Lies debuted in 2017. It won eight Emmys and received 16 nominations. The show is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Liane Moriarty. It follows the darkly comedic story of the secrets that take place in the lives of three seemingly perfect mothers living in Monterey, California.
