(NEW YORK) — Medina Spirit, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, died of a heart attack following a workout at California’s Santa Anita Park, the horse’s trainer announced Monday.

The 3-year-old colt collapsed on the track after completing a routine morning workout and died “suddenly,” the on-site veterinary team who attended to him determined, according to a statement from Santa Anita Park.

The veterinary team took blood, hair and urine samples from the horse and sent them to the California Horse Racing Board, according to Santa Anita.

A full necropsy, as per protocol in California, will be performed at the University of California-Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine to try and ascertain the exact cause of this sudden death. The results will be released by the California Horse Racing Board, according to the Park.

Medina Spirit’s first-place finish at the Kentucky Derby was dampened by a positive drug test for betamethasone, a joint injection/anti-inflammatory medication, following the race on May 1.

The horse was found to have 21 picograms of the steroid in his system, twice the legal limit. The medication is legal but not on race day in Kentucky, Maryland and New York, the states that host the Triple Crown series.

In June, Churchill Downs suspended Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert for two years after the positive test was confirmed.

Baffert maintained his innocence, describing the positive test as a “complete injustice” and maintaining that the steroid was used to treat a skin rash.

A topical ointment, and not an injection, led to the failed test, an attorney for trainer Bob Baffert announced on Friday, The Associated Press reported. The determination was made through urine samples tested by a lab in New York.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will determine whether the test proving the drug was given via ointment and not injection could get Medina Spirit’s positive test tossed out, the AP reported.

Medina Spirit has not been stripped of his victory. He also came in third in the Preakness Stakes.

Baffert said in a statement, “My entire barn is devastated by this news.”

“Medina Spirit was a great champion, a member of our family who was loved by all, and we are deeply mourning his loss,” Baffert said. “I will always cherish the proud and personal memories of Medina Spirit and his tremendous spirit.”

Baffert also said his “thoughts and prayers” are with Zedan Racing Stables, the owners of Medina Spirit.

“Medina Spirit will be missed by all those who worked with and cared for him,” Santa Anita said.

Churchill Downs and the California Horse Racing Board are expected to release statements on Monday.

Santa Anita Park made national headlines in 2019, after dozens of horses died at the racing facility in a single season — the majority on the main track.

The deaths prompted a task force investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office and calls from Gov. Gavin Newsrom to shut down after it did not heed the California Horse Racing Board’s recommendation to suspend racing when the death toll was at 29.

More than 40 horses died that season.

Despite the highly publicized deaths, the facility boasts a high rate of safety and considers itself the largest training facility in the U.S.

In 2019, horses raced or trained at the facility more than 420,000 times at a safety rate of 99.99%, according to the park.

Drake announced Monday he is withdrawing his two Grammy Awards nominations, as reported by Variety.

Drizzy was nominated for Best Rap Album for Certified Lover Boy and Best Rap Performance for his song “Way 2 Sexy” featuring Future and Young Thug. The Toronto, MC, who previously won four Grammys, has been a frequent critic of the Grammy Awards in the past

Last year, after his close friend, the Weeknd, was shut out at the nominations, Drake called for the Grammys to be replaced with “something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come.”

In 2019, when “God’s Plan” won Best Rap Song, Drake said in his acceptance speech that the award had no value.

“We play an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport,” he said. “You already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if they’re singing in your hometown. You’re already winning, you don’t need this right here.”

“I still know kung fu” — Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss put the pieces together in new ‘Matrix Resurrections’ trailer

“I still know kung fu” — Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss put the pieces together in new ‘Matrix Resurrections’ trailer
Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. has unveiled a new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, and although much of the plot is still secret, it seems as if Carrie-Ann Moss‘ Trinity will prove as vital to the human resistance against the machines as Keanu Reeves‘ Neo was in the first three films.

“She believed in me,” Reeves’ Thomas Anderson/Neo says in the trailer. “It’s my turn to believe in her.”

Like Neo was in the original films, Trinity seems to be in God mode once she snaps into the virtual reality of the Matrix; this time around, we see her character having an awakening similar to Anderson’s, realizing the world she occupies isn’t real.

We also get a peek at Jonathan Groff‘s take on the machines’ enforcer Agent Smith; the Mindhunters veteran replaces Hugo Weaving as the fearsome, suited baddie.

The trailer also gives some peeks of some set piece action scenes, from rooftops, to a speeding bullet train. And of course, there’s some reality-bending martial arts action, including a scene where Reeves blasts a bad guy through the air with a wave of energy.

“I still know kung fu,” he huffs.

The Matrix Resurrections opens December 22.

Halsey is getting ready to celebrate their first holiday as a mom and showed off all the decorations they already put up — including a rather unique Christmas tree.

Taking to their Instagram story on Sunday, the “Eastside” singer first lamented that they messed up their gingerbread house after they “put the stairs under the windows instead of the doors.”

Halsey then said that their home will include two Christmas trees this year, a “big tree” that has yet to be decorated and a smaller, “other weirdo tree.”

The latter is decorated with an array of unique ornaments and the most eye catching ones are of Harry Styles and Britney Spears

Those ornaments appear homemade, with one being a cut-out still from Britney’s “Toxic” video and the other of Harry’s cover of Rolling Stone, where he posed shirtless by the ocean.  Halsey also has a glass ornament that immortalizes the infamous swan dress Björk wore to the 2001 Academy Awards.

Other trinkets Halsey hung on their tree include a button that reads “Full of Anxiety,” a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine bottle, a Pop Tart, a rainbow-colored book that says “Agenda” on the front, a jar of marshmallow fluff, a glass jar with a “little mushroom” inside and others.  There also appears to be a small garland made out of Life Savers strung along the top.

“We love her.  an ugly weirdo,” the Grammy nominee remarked. Halsey also revealed a good portion of those ornaments were made by “really awesome small businesses and artists” on Etsy and encouraged their followers to support the creatives.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirms Charlie Cox will return as Daredevil

With just weeks to go until the opening of the Marvel Studios co-production Spider-Man: No Way Home, studio head Kevin Feige may have confirmed a long-held rumor about the return of a hero.

“If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil,” Feige told Cinemablend.

He added a slight disclaimer: “Where we see that…when we see that, remains to be seen.”

Daredevil was on Netflix for three seasons, ending in 2018. The show turned Cox into a fan favorite as blind lawyer Matt Murdock by day, and New York City vigilante Daredevil by night.

With Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker unmasked as Spider-Man and on the run in No Way Home, fans have been speculating he’s going to need a good lawyer, and who better than the Man Without Fear? Analyzing the trailer like the JFK Zapruder film, some feel they’ve even spotted him.

Cox has denied those mysterious forearms in the shot in question are his. However, he allowed, “I love the idea of…Matt as a lawyer advising Peter Parker. That’d be really, really cool.”

Whether Feige’s revelation is trying to get ahead of persistent leaks, or just red meat for fans of the red-suited hero remains to be seen.

Another persistent rumor states the Multiverse-shredding No Way Home will see previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield joining Tom Holland onscreen, to help him best the baddies from previous films who appear in No Way Home. In fact, a recent press screening was only 40 minutes long, reportedly to keep spoilers at bay.

Spider-Man: No Way Home debuts December 17 from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC Audio.
