(UVALDE, Texas) — The Connecticut lawyers who successfully sued the maker of the rifle used in the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut, shooting filed a letter Friday seeking documents and records from Daniel Defense, maker of the rifle used in the Uvalde, Texas, shooting May 24.

This petition was filed on behalf of the father of Amerie Jo Garza, one of the 19 children killed in the rampage by the alleged gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos.

Alfred Garza, Amerie Jo’s father, is being represented by attorneys Josh Koskoff, who obtained a $73 million settlement to nine families of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting victims, and Texas-based attorneys Mikal Watts and Charla Aldous, according to a press release.

“We have to honor her and make sure we do good. From this day forward, I want to live my life for my daughter,” Garza told David Muir in a recent “World News Tonight” interview.

“My purpose for being now is to honor Amerie Jo’s memory,” Garza also said in the statement. “She would want to me to do everything I can so this will never happen again to any other child. I have to fight her fight.”

“Daniel Defense has said that they are praying for the Uvalde families. They should back up those prayers with meaningful action,” said Josh Koskoff of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder. “If they really are sincere in their desire to support these families, they will provide the information that Mr. Garza has requested without delay or excuse. Either way, we will do a complete and thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned.”

The petition letter is a precursor to a lawsuit that could seek to hold the gunmaker liable despite a federal shield for gunmakers that President Joe Biden asked the nation to repeal in his Thursday night speech.

A similar petition was filed Friday by Robb Elementary teacher Emilia Marin, whose lawyer spoke this week to ABC News.

In February, the families of five children and four adults killed in the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School announced a landmark victory in their long-running case against Remington, the company that made and marketed the AR-15 weapon used in the Newton massacre.

DOJ declines to press contempt of Congress charges against Meadows and Scavino

(WASHINGTON) — The Department of Justice will not be prosecuting former Trump officials, chief of staff Mark Meadows and social media director Dan Scavino, for refusing to cooperate with the Jan. 6 committee, according to sources familiar with the correspondence.

The House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol previously voted in December 2021 to hold Meadows in contempt of Congress for not appearing before the committee and a criminal referral was sent to the Department of Justice. Meadows provided the committee with over 9,000 records and emails in regards to his activities and communications with former President Trump surrounding the riot but then refused to cooperate further and give a deposition.

The House voted to hold Scavino and former Trump adviser Peter Navarro in contempt in April after they refused to comply with a subpoena to testify before the Jan. 6 committee.

Navarro was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday on two counts of contempt to Congress.

The New York Times first reported that the DOJ would not be pursuing charges against Meadows and Scavino.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), the chairman of the House Select committee investigating the attack, and Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) released the following statement on Friday evening. They declared that the indictment of Navarro was the “correct decision,” by the DOJ but did not agree with not pursuing charges against Meadows and Scavino.

“We find the decision to reward Mark Meadows and Dan Scavino for their continued attack on the rule of law puzzling. Mr. Meadows and Mr. Scavino unquestionably have relevant knowledge about President Trump’s role in the efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the events of January 6th. We hope the Department provides greater clarity on this matter,” the statement read.

“If the Department’s position is that either or both of these men have absolute immunity from appearing before Congress because of their former positions in the Trump Administration, that question is the focus of pending litigation. As the Select Committee has argued in District Court, Mark Meadows’s claim that he is entitled to absolute immunity is not correct or justified based on the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel Memoranda. No one is above the law.”

When it comes to #1 albums in their home country, Liam and Noel Gallagher are now officially tied.

Liam’s latest solo effort, C’MON YOU KNOW, has debuted at the top of the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart. It’s his fourth solo release to achieve that feat, which, combined with Oasis‘ seven chart-topping records, gives Liam a total of 11 U.K. #1s.

That equals the streak of Liam’s former bandmate and estranged brother, who has also notched four #1 albums with his solo project, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com about C’MON YOU KNOW‘s debut, Liam shares, “What do we have here? Another Number 1 record brothers and sisters! … I’m buzzing, you’re very kind. Thanks everyone and I’ll see you again.”

C’MON YOU KNOW was released last Friday. It includes the single “Everything’s Electric,” which features and was co-written by Dave Grohl.

Former Blue Öyster Cult member Joe Bouchard‘s latest studio album, American Rocker, was released Friday.

The 11-track collection, which Bouchard describes as “a musical journey of my life as a rock star,” is available now via digital formats and on CD. In addition, special bundles pairing the CD with a T-shirt and an autographed booklet can be purchased at MerchBucket.com.

The album features guest contributions from longtime Bryan Adams drummer Mickey Curry and founding Blue Öyster Cult drummer Albert Bouchard, Joe’s brother and frequent collaborator.

Coinciding with American Rocker‘s arrival, Bouchard has debuted a lyric video for one of the album’s tracks, a haunting, melodic tune titled “Deadly Kisses.”

“‘Deadly Kisses’ is a song of young love and how it traps you,” Joe explains. “I sat down in a music room at a private boarding school and played a few odd chords. The opening lines and melody just came out.”

As previously reported, Joe has a series of five North American shows lined up in July with his band Blue Coupe — which also features Albert and original Alice Cooper bassist Dennis Dunaway. He and Albert also will be playing a series of U.K. concerts in August, performing as The Bouchard Brothers.

At 59 years old, Tom Cruise is about to have the biggest domestic hit of his blockbuster-filled career, and Top Gun: Maverick is just taking off.

Deadline predicts the film will pass the $274 million mark at the domestic box office by Monday — which will handily beat Cruise’s previous U.S. high-water mark, 2005’s War of the Worlds, which earned $235 million.

Maverick is doing so well — it still has a nearly unheard-of 97% Critics Score and a 99% Audience Score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes — that the 1986 original Top Gun is topping the streaming charts, according to watchdog Reelgood.

Making their return as a duo for the first time in 10 years, Atlanta R&B singers Anthony David and Algebra Blessett reunite on their new song, “Heaven.” The track samples BeBe and CeCe Winans‘ classic ’80s hit by the same name and on Friday, David and Blessett dropped off a remix of their reimagined version.

It’s considered an amapiano mix, which is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012. David’s love of Afro music dates back to 2016 with his original Afrobeats tune, “I Don’t Mind,” from The Powerful Now album. It also shines through in the new, fresh remix version.

“My love runs deep,” he said of the music genre. “I’ve been feeling the influence for a while. Feels good and not as raunchy as our music over here right now.” David emphasized African culture’s impact on music, saying, “Afrobeats is West Africa. Amapiano is South Africa. Africa just keeps coming with it.”

David and Blessett were last linked in 2011 with the release of their hit single “4 Evermore,” which debuted at the top of the Billboard R&B chart and reached #2 on the Billboard Adult R&B Airplay chart.

On working alongside Blessett on “Heaven,” David said, “Algebra and I really enjoy working together, both on stage and in the studio. With us both living in Atlanta our paths are always crossing. We chose this song for our first duet in a long while because it’s a feel-good classic we grew up on. I like songs that give a transcendent feeling. When deciding on the arrangement and production style, producer Eddie Stokes and I were looking to strip it down and still retain the deep emotion.”

The amapiano mix of “Heaven” is available for streaming on major platforms.

Rod Stewart has met Queen Elizabeth II seven times in his career, and as he prepares to perform for her Platinum Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace on Saturday night, he says he almost feels as though the queen is part of his family.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast ahead of the concert, Rod, who was knighted by the queen in 2016, said, “She’s been so much part of my life, almost like a sister, you know? She’s always been in the background of my life.”

But while he’s performed for the queen on numerous occasions, Rod said he’ll be nervous on Saturday night, because, he revealed, he’ll be singing a song he’s “never, ever sang before.” He called that prospect nerve-wracking.

Asked which member of the royal family is most likely to get up and dance during his performance, Rod immediately said, “Charles, ’cause I love him and my wife absolutely adores him.” When asked why, Rod responded cheekily, “I think they’ve got a thing going on! No, they’re very, very friendly.”

When the interviewer asked Rod what he thought wife Penny‘s response would be to his joke, Rod predicted, “She’s going to absolutely die of embarrassment. I wish I was dead right now! I’m going home!”
