West Virginia lawmakers pass near-total ban on abortion

(CHARLESTON, W.Va.) — West Virginia legislators approved a bill that bans nearly all abortions in the state, sending it to Gov. Jim Justice’s desk for approval before it becomes law.

Known as HB 302, the bill approved by state legislators Tuesday prohibits the procedure at virtually every stage of pregnancy.

However, there are exceptions if the mother’s life is in danger, if the fetus is “non-medically viable” or for an ectopic pregnancy, which is when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside of the uterus. Psychological or emotional conditions are excluded, according to the bill.

Physicians who perform unlawful abortions could lose their license to practice medicine and face criminal charges.

Additionally, the bill states that miscarriages and stillbirths are not considered abortions.

The bill passed both chambers last week, but returned to the House for a vote after an amendment by the Senate stripped a section of the bill that would see doctors imprisoned for up to 10 years if they perform abortions outside of the exceptions.

The Senate also changed the bill’s exceptions for rape and incest. In the House-backed version, rape and incest were excluded from the ban until about 14 weeks’ gestation and as long as a report is filed with a “qualified law enforcement officer.” In the Senate, the exceptions are until eight weeks’ gestation.

The bill passed by legislators requires physicians to report any abortions they perform to the commissioner of the state’s Bureau for Public Health within 15 days, including a justification for why the care was provided.

On July 25, the state legislature was initially called into a special session to consider Justice’s proposal to reduce personal income tax rates.

But that morning, as lawmakers were gaveling in, Justice amended the call and said he would also be asking lawmakers “to clarify and modernize the abortion-related laws currently existing as part of the West Virginia Code.”

“From the moment the Supreme Court announced their decision in Dobbs, I said that I would not hesitate to call a Special Session once I heard from our Legislative leaders that they had done their due diligence and were ready to act,” Justice said in a statement. “As I have said many times, I very proudly stand for life, and I believe that every human life is a miracle worth protecting.”

Maren Morris is keeping the music coming with a fresh single off her Humble Quest album. For her next radio single, she’s selected “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” which is the third track on the project.

“Next single let’s goooooooooooo,” Maren wrote on Twitter this week along with the single art for her song.

Humble Quest arrived in March, and the project’s first single, “Circles Around This Town,” cracked the Top 10 on the country radio charts. Fans have already gotten to familiarize themselves with “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” as Maren and her fellow artist husband, Ryan Hurd, debuted the song live at the 2022 CMT Music Awards stage back in April.

In other news, Maren recently returned to the studio with her “The Middle” collaborator Zedd for a new duet, “Make You Say.”

She’s also made headlines in recent weeks for her feud with Jason Aldean’s wife Brittany over Brittany’s transphobic social media comments. Maren launched a t-shirt to commemorate the feud, raising $150,000 to benefit transgender youth causes in the process.

Julian Lennon released Jude, his first new studio album in 11 years, this past Friday. Now, the singer/songwriter is taking part in a special streaming event to promote the record, which is set to kick off September 14 at 3 p.m. ET on the LOOPED platform.

During the interactive event titled “Jude: Behind the Album,” Julian — who is John Lennon‘s older son — will be interviewed and will share stories and details about each track on the record.

Fans can view and participate in the Q&A by visiting LoopedLive.com. Tickets for the event are free, but only a limited number are available. The session will also feature giveaways and opportunities to purchase limited-edition merchandise.

Jude is an 11-track collection that Julian says includes songs that “have been in the works for several years, so it almost feels like a coming-of-age album.”

The record’s title is a nod to the famous Beatles song “Hey Jude,” which Paul McCartney wrote to try to comfort five-year-old Julian following his parents’ separation.

Julian co-produced Jude with his longtime guitarist Justin Clayton. The album includes the track “Gaia,” which features guest vocals by Paul Buchanan of The Blue Nile and French singer Elissa Lauper.

With the release of a new teaser, Netflix has announced its romantic reality show Love Is Blind will return in a month.

The wildly successful reality series — which has already spawned Brazilian and Japanese adaptations — returns for its third season on Oct. 19, it was revealed in the 31-second first look.

While we still don’t know which lucky singles will appear in the Love Is Blind season 3 cast, fans do see glimpses of what to expect throughout the season.

Love Is Blind, hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, starts with men and women meeting one another while speed dating in pods where they can’t see each other — hence the show’s title.

The couples who get engaged in the pods finally meet each other face-to-face before they continue to see if they can make it to the altar and ultimately say “I do.”

Season 1, which aired in 2020, saw two couples — Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton as well as Amber Pike and Matthew Barnett — marry. They’re still together to this day.

Season 2’s couples didn’t fare as well. The season, which aired earlier in 2022, saw two couples — Iyanna McNeely and Jarrette Jones as well as Danielle Ruhl and Nick Thompson — marry. However, both couples have announced they’re divorcing.

Sumerian Records

Sleeping with Sirens has premiered a new song called “Complete Collapse,” the title track off the band’s upcoming album.

“‘Complete Collapse’ is actually a song about how I was feeling mentally before the pandemic and how I could have completely collapsed if it weren’t for the time at home during the pandemic,” says vocalist Kellin Quinn. “Having the time to restore and not burn out was a godsend, which is ironic for how terrible the pandemic was.”

“It is also the reason for the title and the picture on the cover of our album,” Quinn adds. “I think says it best we’re all just chilling at the pool drinking our martinis while everything is burning around us.”

You can listen to “Complete Collapse” now via digital outlets and watch its accompanying video streaming now on YouTube.

Complete Collapse the album, the follow-up to 2019’s How It Feels to Be Lost, drops October 14. It includes collaborations with Underoath‘s Spencer Chamberlain, Dorothy, Royal & the Serpent and Charlotte Sands.

Sleeping with Sirens will be performing at Las Vegas’ When We Were Young festival in October. The much-anticipated event is headlined by My Chemical Romance, Paramore and Bring Me the Horizon.
