How recovery efforts are going in Lee County after Hurricane Ian

(FORT MYERS, Fla.) — Nearly a week after Hurricane Ian slammed into Florida’s southwestern coast, search and rescue efforts are ongoing, as the region takes steps to recover from the devastating storm.

Lee County — home to Fort Myers and the barrier islands Sanibel and Pine — was especially hard-hit by the powerful Category 4 storm, with Fort Myers Beach frequently referred to as “ground zero” by local officials.

At least 55 people died due to Ian in the coastal county, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office — more than half of the 100 storm-related fatalities statewide reported so far.

The damage in the county is widespread: Power infrastructure has been destroyed, boil water notices are in place, debris — from trees to boats — block roads, more than half of traffic lights are out and barrier islands are inaccessible by car.

As the community attempts to take stock of the storm’s impact, it is still unsafe for many residents to return to the area, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno warned.

“I need patience,” Marceno said during a press briefing Tuesday. “We know people want to get back. They want to see their homes. They want to see if they have a home. They want to grab a photo album — things that cannot be replaced by insurance or money.

“We want to make sure we give people when it’s safe, the first second it’s safe, a chance to do that,” he continued.

Lee County Manager Roger Desjarlais said it could be “30 days as a minimum” before people are safely able to go back.

“It is really dangerous to be in Fort Myers Beach right now,” Desjarlais said during a press briefing Monday. “There is no power. There is no water.”

Search and rescue efforts ongoing

More than 840 rescues have been conducted in Lee County since Ian made landfall on Sept. 28, Marceno said Tuesday.

Marceno said crews are currently following up search efforts of properties and identifying if anyone is in need or is unaccounted for, as the search and rescue mission continues “around the clock.”

“We’re probably still another three to four days left in search and rescue and recovery,” he said Tuesday. “So that’s a rough time frame that could go in either direction.”

Desjarlais said it is unclear how many people are unaccounted for. Eight urban search and rescue teams are working to locate residences and if there are any deceased people in the rubble to preserve evidence before heavy equipment is brought in, local officials said.

Restoring barrier island access

Ian knocked out the main modes of transport to several of Lee County’s islands. The Sanibel Causeway, which connects the island to the mainland, and the Matlacha Pass Bridge, which connects nearby Pine Island to the mainland in Cape Coral, were destroyed.

The Florida National Guard has been airlifting vehicles and other assets onto Pine and Sanibel islands, as well as evacuating people. The U.S. Coast Guard has also been running waterborne evacuations for residents of the islands.

In the short term, the state Department of Transportation is working on building a temporary gravel bridge to Pine Island.

“These repairs are needed for first responders and residents to access the island, as well as other recovery efforts such as power restoration and debris removal,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office said in a press release this week.

The bridge is on track to open by Saturday, officials said.

“This is not gonna be a bridge you’re going to want to drive 45 mph over … but at least you’ll have connectivity to the mainland,” DeSantis said during a press briefing Monday.

He said his administration would be trying something “similar” for the causeway to Sanibel Island, with a bid process underway.

The county is working on a temporary ferry service to assist residents of Sanibel Island, with boat access currently restricted to approved contractors and residents, Marceno said.

Turning on power and water

Nearly half of the county remains without power, according to state data.

DeSantis said Monday that the electrical co-op for the state of Florida will be sending 1,000 additional linemen from across the state to help Lee County’s power restoration efforts. The National Guard will begin flying electrical personnel onto Pine and Sanibel islands, he said.

The Lee County Electric Co-op has bumped up its restoration timeline to Saturday from Oct. 23 for all impacted areas except for Pine Island and Sanibel, the governor’s office said.

The water is slowly being restored as water pressure normalizes, Desjarlais said Monday. The Army Corps of Engineers is working to identify and assess several fractures in water infrastructure as part of the efforts to restore running water in Lee County. Some residents who have running water may be under a boil water notice.

In the meantime, the state and Florida National Guard have set up several distribution points for food, water and ice throughout mainland Lee County.

Public schools temporarily closed

Due to the lack of power and water, as well as damage to buildings, Lee County public schools are closed this week, the district said.

The damage to school buildings is varied, school leaders said.

“We have some schools that we believe are ready to open, others need minimal work,” Lee County School District Superintendent Christopher Bernier said in a video message Monday. “Some of our schools will require significant repairs and, as expected, there are a few that have damage that may be beyond repair.”

Building inspectors are conducting more comprehensive assessments, and some students and staff may be relocated depending on the damage, he said.

“This is not going to stop us from opening our schools as soon as we can,” Bernier said. “While we are not opening this week, we are certainly not waiting until January.”

Kelly Clarkson saluted Jennifer Lopez on her daytime talk show by choosing to belt out “Waiting for Tonight” during her ending segment, Kellyoke. The singer opted for a super stripped-down version, accompanied by just an acoustic guitar to open the passionate and pining performance before the rest of her band slowly joined.

If you want to channel The Weeknd‘s After Hours era for Halloween — you’re in luck. The hitmaker is out with the official costume, complete with shades, a red jacket and pair of black leather gloves. The Weeknd notes “Halloween is just around the corner” and that people should order the costume on his official website before October 10 so it’ll arrive by Halloween.

Pink is showing off the serious pipes her 11-year-old daughter, Willow, has. The singer shared a video of her daughter playing on a skateboard — and she is wearing a helmet and knee pads — while singing at the top of her lungs. Fans were unable to identify the song and believe this is teasing a new collab between the two, just like their pandemic hit “Cover Me In Sunshine.”

Blake Shelton had the sweetest shout-out for wife Gwen Stefani on her 53rd birthday. Sharing a photo of them walking hand in hand, he wrote, “Happy birthday to my beautiful wife @gwenstefani!!! I love you so freakin much!!!!” Gwen shared the tribute to her Instagram Story and included three red heart emojis. She revealed he also bought her a massive flower bouquet.

Sara Bareilles will support victims of domestic violence at a charity concert set for Thursday, October 6, at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York. Proceeds benefit the Pace Women’s Justice Center.  The show starts at 8 p.m. ET.

A lawsuit stemming from the sale of one of the former couple’s properties has turned ugly, with Angelina Jolie accusing Brad Pitt of domestic violence.

According to a countersuit obtained by ABC News, Jolie accuses her fellow Oscar winner of getting physical with her aboard a private plane flight in 2016 and then with some of their children, who “bravely” intervened.

Jolie and Pitt are parents to adopted children Maddox, 21, Pax, 18, and Zahara, 17, as well as 16-year-old Shiloh, and 14-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

The scrum reportedly started as a verbal argument, with Pitt accusing his then-wife of being “too deferential” to the kids, according to the legal documents.

“Pitt grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her, and then grabbed her shoulders and shook her again before pushing her into the bathroom wall,” according to the document, which also said, “Pitt then punched the ceiling of the plane numerous times, prompting Jolie to leave the bathroom.”

“When one of the children verbally defended Jolie, Pitt lunged at his own child and Jolie grabbed him from behind to stop him,” the suit says.

“To get Jolie off his back, Pitt threw himself backwards into the airplane/s seats injuring Jolie’s back and elbow. The children rushed in and all bravely tried to protect each other … Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face. Some of the children pleaded with Pitt to stop …”

Pitt sued Jolie in February, claiming she sold their French estate and winery, Château Miraval, without his knowledge.

Variety reports negotiations broke down after the Bullet Train star sought a nondisclosure agreement to keep quiet about what the countersuit called “Pitt’s physical and emotional abuse of her and their children.”

Julian Lennon has been named the official 2022 ambassador for the 12th annual edition of World College Radio Day, which takes place Friday, October 7.

The celebration, which is organized by the not-for-profit College Radio Foundation, seeks to unite college radio stations in more than 50 countries to raise awareness about the work college stations do and value they bring to broadcasting.

“College radio is a good way to learn about what’s going on in the world, whether it’s locally or worldwide,” says Lennon in a statement. “College radio is not like the usual mainstream stuff, and I find that far more intriguing.”

This year’s World College Radio Day theme is “Voices for Peace.” Reflecting on the topic, Julian, who is the late John Lennon‘s older son, says, “I feel I’ve been pretty successful in promoting peace and trying to motivate people through so many mediums, but we’ve got to keep moving, we’ve got to keep changing, we’ve got to do better.”

An exclusive interview with Julian, conducted by students from World College Radio Day’s U.S. board, will be simulcast October 7 on over 700 participating college stations. Many of the stations also plan to play a recording of Julian’s recent cover of his father’s classic peace anthem “Imagine,” which he did in support of Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion.

Lennon plans to release a 7-inch vinyl single featuring “Imagine” on or around November 18.

Last month, Julian released a new studio album titled Jude, his first new collection of original songs since 2011’s Everything Changes.

Previous World College Radio Day ambassadors have included Joan Jett, Poison‘s Bret Michaels, “Weird Al” YankovicThe Black Keys and Wyclef Jean.

While details about the state of their marriage varies, Page Six is reporting that supermodel Gisele Bündchen and Super Bowl superstar Tom Brady have hired divorce lawyers.

The publication quotes “multiple sources” who say the countdown clock has run out on their 13-year marriage, stemming from his decision to “unretire” from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I never actually thought this argument would be the end of them, but it looks like it is,” said one source. “I don’t think there will be any coming back now. They both have lawyers and are looking at what a split will entail, who gets what and what the finances will be.”

The pair have extensive real estate holdings, reportedly worth some $26 million, according to the publication. That pales in comparison to Brady’s earning hundreds of millions from endorsements; Bündchen reportedly has a net worth of $400 million.

The couple will reportedly share custody of their two children, 12-year-old Benjamin and 9-year-old Vivian. Brady is also dad to Jack, his 15-year-old son with his Blue Bloods star ex, Bridget Moynahan.

Nia Long shared a message on Instagram Tuesday, the first time the actress has posted to social media since the widespread news of cheating allegations against her longtime partner, Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka.

“A tip for mental health,” Long wrote on her page and shared to her IG Story. “Learn to distinguish who deserves an explanation, who deserves one answer, and who deserves absolutely nothing.”

The post comes nearly two weeks after Udoka’s suspension as head coach, following reports he had an affair with a female Celtics staff member.

Prior to her social post, Long shared a statement with ABC News expressing her gratitude for the support she’s been given amid the rumors.

“The outpouring love and support from family, friends and the community during this difficult time means so much to me,” she said. “I ask that my privacy be respected as I process the recent events. Above all, I am a mother and will continue to focus on my children.”

The Celtics suspended Udoka from his coaching duties for the 2022-23 season. The organization shared news of the suspension on their website and Twitter account.

“The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has suspended Head Coach Ime Udoka for the 2022-23 season for violations of team policies,” the statement reads. “A decision about his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date. The suspension takes effect immediately.”

Long, 51, and Udoka, 45, have been engaged since 2015. They welcomed their son, Kez Sunday, in 2011.

The award-winning actress once told Essence that while happily engaged to Udoka, she was in no rush to get down the aisle.

Carrie Underwood is paying her respects to Loretta Lynn

In an Instagram post, Carrie recalls meeting Loretta backstage at the Grand Ole Opry early on in her career — specifically how Loretta lightly spanked her as she walked by.

“I turned around and there she was…in a big sparkly dress…laughing as she continued to walk down the hall at what she had just done…,” Carrie says.

She goes onto describe the country legend as a “cantankerous little pistol” who was friendly, sweet, and “never afraid to be herself and speak her mind.”

Over the years, Carrie has been part of musical tributes to the legend, joining forces with Loretta and Reba McEntire on “Still Woman Enough,” the title track off Loretta’s 2021 collaborations album. She also contributed a cover of “You’re Lookin’ at Country” on the 2010 album Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn, in addition to performing “You Ain’t Woman Enough” during her homage to women of country music at the 2020 ACM Awards.

“She is irreplaceable. She will be incredibly missed…but her legacy lives on in those of us whom she has influenced. I am truly grateful to have known such an amazing woman and artist,” Carrie continues. “Thank you, Loretta, for showing us how it’s done.”

In the wake of Loretta’s passing, there has been an outpouring of support from artists across genres, including Miranda Lambert, Dolly Parton and Carole King.
