(SAN DIEGO, Calif.) — A former Marine arrested in El Salvador earlier this week for the 2016 murder of his girlfriend was ordered held without bail during an arraignment hearing in California on Friday.

Raymond McLeod was taken into custody on Monday following a yearslong manhunt. He was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, 30-year-old Krystal Mitchell, who was found strangled to death at a friend’s apartment in San Diego on June 10, 2016.

“This week, this defendant’s brazen attempt to evade justice was over,” San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said during a press briefing following the arraignment. “The work to hold him accountable has begun.”

McLeod, 37, pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder during his arraignment hearing, San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV reported. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 26, 2023. He faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted, the district attorney said.

Mitchell’s mother, Josephine Funes Wentzel, a former police detective, was instrumental in the search for McLeod by helping generate leads and spreading the word about the manhunt on social media, the district attorney’s office said.

“He’s not going to get away again. He’s never going to be released from that jail if I could have something to do with that,” Wentzel, who was in the courtroom Friday, told reporters after the arraignment hearing. “I will be satisfied when he is convicted for brutally murdering my daughter, and that he is sentenced to life in prison.”

The couple, from Phoenix, was in San Diego to visit friends when Mitchell was killed. McLeod was seen assaulting Mitchell in the hours before she was found dead from a “violent” strangulation, Stephan said. McLeod, the last person with whom Mitchell was seen alive, then fled to Mexico, Stephan said.

McLeod was believed to have also been in Belize, Guatemala and, for the past two-and-a-half years, El Salvador, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Joseph O’Callahan told reporters during Friday’s briefing.

“He really laid low,” O’Callahan said, noting the former Marine may have relied on training in “clandestine operations.”

Then, on Aug. 20, the U.S. Marshals Service received a promising tip that someone resembling McLeod may be working as an English instructor at a school in Sonsonate, El Salvador, O’Callahan said.

A week later, U.S. Marshals traveled to El Salvador and “determined the individual inside the school was, in fact, Mr. McLeod, going by the name of Jack Donovan,” he said.

McLeod, previously described by the U.S. Marshals as an “avid bodybuilder,” is believed to have taken the name of a bodybuilder in Canada who resembled him and “was able to run with that identity,” O’Callahan said.

El Salvadorian law enforcement officials took McLeod into custody on Monday and he was deported back to the U.S. the following day.

McLeod was added to the U.S. Marshals’ 15 Most Wanted List in 2021 and a reward of up to $50,000 was being offered for information leading to his capture. O’Callahan said the U.S. Marshals plan to pay the reward but did not share further details.

Maren Morris is finding the humor in a rapidly escalating social media feud with Jason Aldean’s wife, Brittany.

In the latest installment of a fiery weeklong back-and-forth, Maren posted a screenshot of a photo that appears of her onscreen during Brittany’s recent interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight.

The photo of Maren is from the Grammy Awards, but what really got her attention is the caption underneath, which identifies her as a “lunatic country music person.”

“#NewProfilePic,” Maren joked on Twitter, posting a screenshot.

For those who haven’t been following the feud between Maren and Brittany, it started when Brittany posted an Instagram Reel showing her going from no makeup to a face full of glam. The caption thanked her parents for not “changing my gender” during her “tomboy phase.”

Cassadee Pope first objected to Brittany’s transphobic comments, and Maren quickly followed, calling Brittany “Insurrection Barbie.” Angry back-and-forth ensued, and Brittany even launched a Barbie-themed line of shirts that read “Don’t Tread On Our Kids.”

Jason hasn’t formally addressed the feud — though he has posted a few vaguely supportive comments on Brittany’s posts — but on Friday, his publicity firm of 17 years, The GreenRoom, announced its decision to part ways with the star. The company didn’t specify whether that decision was a response to Brittany’s comments.

As for Maren, she’s not the only one finding humor in the fight: Cassadee replied to Maren’s “lunatic country music person” post, writing, “A framer for sure.”

Charlie Puth reveals he reversed his music-making template to make ‘Charlie’

Usually Charlie Puth makes music by coming up with the melody and then writing lyrics around the music.  But he put that process in reverse to make his new album, Charlie, which comes out October 7.

Speaking to American Songwriter, the Grammy winner explained, “I wanted to approach this album a little differently.” He said he wanted to step away from his “music first, lyrics after” formula, which is how he writes “a lot of music for myself and for other artists.”

“For this album, I had so much to say and throughout all the conversations that I had with myself, I was able to start with the lyrics first and then put the music on afterward,” said Charlie, adding he used the same process to develop The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber‘s hit song “Stay.”

“The most important thing you can do as a songwriter is tell the truth,” the singer continued, “and I was telling the truth a little bit before, but now the cup is overflowing with truth on this album.”

Although Charlie said he’s “a pretty private person,” that doesn’t mean he putting up a facade. “I’m very open about the mistakes that I’ve made in the past in these new songs,” he said.

While this is a deeply personal album for the hitmaker, Charlie said this new effort is “just as much about the listener, as well, and me wanting to guide them to inspiration.”

That explains why he seemingly created this whole album on TikTok, allowing fans to follow along with the process and make their own remixes. “I wanted them to make their own album and realize that anybody can be a musician,” he said.

Charlie dropped “Smells Like Me,” a new single off Charlie that’s about him wondering if an ex misses him.

Shinedown has premiered a new version of “Daylight,” the current single off the band’s new album, Planet Zero.

The updated recording, which is streaming exclusively through Amazon Music, is described as a “complete re-imagining” of “Daylight,” complete with “big drums and an aggressive distorted synth guitar tone that balance against the beauty and softness of the verses and chorus.”

The original “Daylight” hit #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, helping Shinedown once again take the record for the most leaders in the ranking’s history. The Planet Zero title track reached #1 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, as well.

Shinedown has been touring throughout the year in support of Planet Zero, which continues Friday at the Rocklahoma festival. The band will then play a run of U.S. headlining dates throughout September and October, followed by a trip to Europe in November.

Jon Pardi is known as one of country music’s stoutest neo-traditionalists, bringing elements of fiddle, steel guitar and more into songs with subject matter that’s just as classic.

He’s keeping those traditional country vibes going in his newest album, Mr. Saturday Night, and the singer’s method is still working. The lead single off his new album, “Last Night Lonely,” recently reached the top of the charts on country radio.

But just as gratifying is the validation he gets from the classic country hitmakers who influence his music, Jon says.

“It was always just kind of what I thought country music sounded like,” he explains to Billboard, speaking of the fan fervor over throwback country that emulates the heyday of the ‘90s.

“I’ve toured with people like Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn and you want them to like what you do,” the singer continues. “The coolest thing is just hearing them say, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing.’ I’m happy that people are more accepting of the more traditional, ‘90s kind of sound.”

Mr. Saturday Night arrived on Friday.

Perry Farrell confirms Eric Avery’s return to Jane’s Addiction

Perry Farrell has confirmed that original Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery is back in the band.

“We recorded three songs with [Avery],” Farrell tells NME. “That Jane’s rhythm section is back.”

Farrell’s comments come after the Jane’s Twitter account shared an uncaptioned video of Farrell and Avery jamming together in August.

Avery played with Jane’s from the band’s founding through their first breakup in 1991. He skipped out on reunions in the late ’90s and early 2000s before eventually rejoining Jane’s in 2008, only to leave again two years later. Since then, Chris Chaney has been the Jane’s Addiction bassist.

In addition to Avery, Farrell has also reunited with another former bandmate, Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble. LeNoble was not in the lineup for PfP’s comeback show at the Welcome to Rockville festival earlier this year, but later rejoined the band for their summer shows, including a set at Lollapalooza.

“We all took that opportunity to not just kiss and make up, but to do some great work and we sounded really good,” Farrell says. “It’s true what they say about musicians. They get better with age.”

Gina McCarthy to step down as Biden’s climate adviser

(WASHINGTON) — Gina McCarthy — President Joe Biden’s top climate adviser — will step down from her post on Sept. 16, the White House announced on Friday.

The National Climate Advisor role will then be filled by McCarthy’s deputy, Ali Zaidi, just weeks after the president signed historic climate legislation.

Longtime Democrat John Podesta, who served as President Bill Clinton’s chief of staff, was a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, and managed Hillary Clinton’s 2016 White House bid, will oversee the implementation of the climate and energy provisions of Democrats’ recently passed Inflation Reduction Act while also chairing the President’s National Climate Task Force, according to the White House.

“Under Gina McCarthy and Ali Zaidi’s leadership, my administration has taken the most aggressive action ever, from historic legislation to bold executive actions, to confront the climate crisis head-on,” Biden said in a statement announcing the administrative moves.

Biden also nodded to his recruitment of Podesta, under the title, “Senior Advisor to the President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation.” While with the Obama administration, Podesta’s focus was on coordinating climate-related policy initiatives.

“His deep roots in climate and clean energy policy and his experience at senior levels of government mean we can truly hit the ground running to take advantage of the massive clean energy opportunity in front of us.”

After decades of federal inaction to curb climate change, the The Inflation Reduction Act includes $369 billion in investments in climate and clean energy programs– lauded by experts as one of the country’s most important steps to address the issue and potentially decrease energy costs for households nationwide.

“This is an absolute game-changer,” McCarthy said about the IRA’s climate provisions at a recent summit in Lake Tahoe.

McCarthy, 68, led the Environmental Protection Agency for four years during the Obama administration. During her nearly two-year tenure with President Biden, she played an outsized role promoting climate initiatives across federal agencies and moving climate legislation through Congress. Her office helped craft the IRA.

The Washington Post had reported in April that she was mulling the decision to step down from her position, however.

“Yes, she is stepping down,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at her Friday briefing. “She, as you know, has been a leader in what we have seen as one of the largest investment in dealing with climate change … She is a — not the first time that she’s been in an administration, and we are very sad to lose her.”

Kanye West admitted that he’s addicted to porn and has suffered the consequences.

“Pornography destroyed my family,” Ye wrote Thursday in a since-deleted post on Instagram. “I deal with the addiction.”

He also expressed concern about his daughters becoming involved in pornography. “Instagram promotes it. Not gonna let it happen to Northy and Chicago,” the Donda rapper continued.

Ye’s pornography statements were part of a larger rant in which he addressed his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, noting he was going to be the one to decide where his four kids go to school. “I’m the kids father,” he wrote.

He posted a since-deleted screenshot from Kim, where she responded, “Can u please stop.” West replied, “No. We need to talk in person.”

Also mentioned in the rant was Kim’s mother, Kris Jenner. In a since-deleted message addressed to Kylie Jenner‘s former assistant, Victoria Villarroel, Ye wrote, “Don’t let Kris make you do playboy like she made [Kylie] and Kim do.” He then shared another since-deleted screenshot from Kris in which she asked Kim to have him end the public exchange.

“Tell him to please stop mentioning my name,” the screenshot of Jenner’s message read.

After escalating the social media feud, West asked Travis Scott and Tristan Thompson, the father of Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian‘s children, respectively, to support him, writing, “We in this 2gthr.”
