(LOS ANGELES) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Los Angeles Department of Public Health have confirmed the first death due to monkeypox in a Los Angeles County resident.

The resident was “severely immunocompromised” and had been hospitalized, officials said in a statement.

“Public Health sends heartfelt condolences and wishes of healing to the family and friends mourning the loss of their loved one,” their statement read.

No additional information will be made public for privacy and confidentiality reasons, officials added.

Last week, county officials were investigating the death of someone who had been diagnosed with monkeypox.

There are more than 21,000 cases of monkeypox in the U.S., according to LA County officials.

There are 4,302 positive monkeypox cases in the state — the largest number of cases in the country, California Department of Public Health data shows. About 1,692 people have tested positive for monkeypox in LA County, according to recent data.

In Texas, a Harris County resident who had been diagnosed with monkeypox died last month, state health officials said.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the patient was severely immunocompromised and died at a county hospital.

Health officials have insisted the immunocompromised get vaccinated since they are at an elevated risk of severe disease.

Most cases in the current monkeypox outbreak have been detected in gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men. However, anyone exposed to the virus could become infected with monkeypox, officials said.

According to the CDC, monkeypox primarily spreads through continued skin-to-skin contact with infected people’s lesions or bodily fluids.

In addition to lesions, which can appear like pimples or blisters, the most common symptoms associated with monkeypox are swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, fatigue and muscle aches.

Saturday Night Live alums Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers helped announce history at the 2022 Emmy Awards when actress Sheryl Lee Ralph became this year’s winner of Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

This is a historic win for Ralph, as she is now the the second Black woman in Emmy history to win this honor.  Jackée Harry was the first Black woman to win Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, taking home the honor in 1987 for 227.

The moment wasn’t lost on the Abbott Elementary star, who broke into a joyful song to accept the award. The audience leapt to its feet to celebrate the moment.

“To anyone who has ever, ever had a dream and thought your treatment wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like, this is what striving looks like,” Ralph declared. “And don’t you ever, ever give up on you!”

Singer Lizzo then helped announce Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein as Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. This marks the second-straight win for the cantankerous actor, who picked up the award in 2021.

This time around, he said he learned a valuable lesson about keeping his acceptance speech clean. The British actor explained, “I was told not to swear and I did and I’m sorry. But it meant the feed got cut back home in the U.K. so my family never got to hear me say this. So thank you for this second chance!”

He then dropped a series of expletives, which also got muted, and joked “I’m so sorry!”

The 2022 Emmy Awards started off with a colorful number from host Kenan Thompson and led into “the queen of all thrones,” Oprah Winfrey announcing Michael Keaton as the winner of Lead Actor in a Limited Series.

“You have about 90 of these, don’t you?” the Dopesick actor joked to Oprah to open his acceptance speech about believing in oneself.  Keaton also spoke about how television shaped his childhood and how he fell in love with acting by reenacting scenes from “all of the cowboy shows” he used to watch.

He revealed his family encouraged him to act out those scenes in front of them and said, “I want to thank them.  I want to just thank all those people in my family for never making me feel foolish, because I went on to do that several times myself!”

After Keaton walked off stage, The White Lotus‘ Murray Bartlett was announced as this year’s winner for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.

He won out against fellow Emmy-nominated White Lotus alums Steve Zahn and Jake Lacey.

Bartlett kept his speech focused on his castmates, friends and family for their support.  He had a poignant shout out to his mother, who was watching from Australia.  He thanked her for “the most wonderful foundation of unconditional love and inspiring me to believe that we can all do that for each other. Thank you, mom!”

He hoisted up his sparkling Emmy and finished, “And thank you for this!”

Biden pushes efforts to end cancer on 60th anniversary of JFK’s ‘moonshot’ speech

(BOSTON) — On the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s famous moonshot speech, President Joe Biden on Monday outlined a new “American Moonshot” aimed at eradicating cancer “as we know it.”

“President Kennedy set a goal to win the space race against Russia and advance science and technology for all humanity,” Biden said during a speech at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston. “And when he said that goal, he established a national purpose that could rally the American people and the common cause, and he succeeded. Now in our time, on the 60th anniversary of his clarion call, we face another inflection point.”

After being introduced by Kennedy’s daughter, U.S. Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy, Biden pointed to the parallels between his efforts and those of JFK, who, at the time, declared the America’s objective to put a man on the moon — noting that both plans were unprecedented for their times.

“I believe … the same national purpose will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills to end cancer as we know it. And even cure cancers once and for all,” he said.

The cause is a personal one for Biden, who launched the moonshot originally as vice president just months after his son, Beau, died from glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, in 2015.

Biden reiterated the importance of this cancer moonshot to him, saying it was one of the reasons he ran for president in 2020.

“As president of the United States Senate, I presided over the overwhelming bipartisan vote and watched my friend Mitch McConnell name the cancer provisions in that bill after my son Beau who had lost his life to that disease just months earlier. And when we left office, Jill and I knew we had to keep going through, keep it up. So, we initiated the Biden cancer initiative. We focused on turning the moonshot into a movement, not just a shot, a movement,” Biden said.

In the years since President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act in 1971, “enormous progress” has been made in the nation’s fight against cancer, Biden said, adding that progress has increased at a faster pace in recent years, with the death rate due to cancer falling more than 25% over the last 25 years. Cancer, however, remains the second-leading cause of death in the U.S. after heart disease.

Earlier this year, Biden relaunched the cancer moonshot initiative, unveiling his goals of cutting cancer deaths in half in the next 25 years, and on Monday he pointed to how technology can be used to further efforts to find a cure.

“Today, I’m setting a long term goal for the cancer moonshot to rally America, an ingenuity that we can engage like we did to reach the moon that actually cures cancers — not all cancer — cancer — cures cancer once and for all. ” Biden said.

Biden also introduced Dr. Renee Wegrzyn — his pick for the first Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), a program Biden campaigned on creating to help drive research to cure diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s and Diabetes, and one he views as critical to the success of the moonshot.

“Scientists are exploring whether mRNA vaccine technology that brought us safe and effective COVID 19 vaccines could be used to stop cancer cells when they first arrive to target the right treatments,” Biden said.

Looking ahead, Biden asked the audience to imagine what was possible.

“Imagine the possibilities. Vaccines that could prevent cancer, like there is for HPV. Imagine molecular zip codes that could deliver drugs and gene therapy precisely to the right tissues. Imagine simple blood test during an annual physical that can detect cancer early with a chance of cure best. Imagine getting a simple shot instead of grueling chemo, or getting a pill follicle pharmacy instead of invasive treatments and long hospital stays,” he said.

But Biden warned that the federal effort and investments would not be enough to cure cancer.

“We need everyone to get the game. That’s why I’m also calling on the science and medical communities to bring the boldest thinking to this fight. I’m calling on the private sector to develop and test new treatments. Make drugs more affordable, share more data, and knowledge that can inform the public and benefit every company’s research,” he said. “And I’m respectfully calling on people living with cancer and caregivers and families to keep sharing their experience and pushing for progress,” Biden said, urging them to share their ideas with the administration as well.”

Earlier, the White House said Biden would not be seeking additional funding from Congress for what is bound to be an costly effort.

The David Bowie-themed NFT sale “Bowie on the Blockchain,” which had been scheduled to take place Tuesday, September 13, has been postponed in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

A message posted on Bowie’s official website explains, “Out of respect for the people of the UK and Queen Elizabeth II, we will be postponing the ‘Bowie on the Blockchain’ sale. We will update soon.”

As previously reported, the sale was organized by Bowie’s estate in partnership with NFT marketplace OpenSea and the We Love the Arts venture.

The “Bowie on the Blockchain” sale will feature nine NFTS that pay tribute to the late rock legend, and his influential life and music, each created by a different artist. Among the artists who created the collectible digital tokens are Nadya Tolokonnikova, of the Russian activist and music collective Pussy Riot.

The Bowie estate will donate all of the profits from the sale to the anti-poverty and humanitarian organization CARE. In 2019, David’s widow, Iman, was named CARE’s first Global Advocate.

Queen Elizabeth died Thursday, September 8, at the age of 96.
