(CLEVELAND) — After weeks of back and forth negotiating on the time, the hosts and the venue, Ohio Senate nominees Rep. Tim Ryan and J.D. Vance faced off on Monday for their first debate. A second showdown is scheduled a week later.

Ryan and Vance, the Democratic and Republican candidates vying for retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman’s seat, argued their case on stage hosted by Fox 8 News in Cleveland.

FiveThirtyEight’s polling average shows Ryan and Vance in a close race. The winner could determine the balance of power in the Senate, which is currently split 50-50.

The candidates clashed over the issue of abortion, with Ryan claiming that Vance called those getting pregnant from rape an “inconvenience,” which Vance pushed back on, saying he has never uttered those words.

“I am pro-life. I’ve always been pro-life, and I grew up in a poor family and a poor community. I saw a lot of young women have abortions when I was growing up,” Vance said, adding that, in regard to Sen. Lindsey Graham’s proposed national abortion ban, “some minimum national standard is totally fine with me.”

Ryan added that he would support codifying Roe v. Wade.

Regarding the issue of the 10-year-old Ohio girl who got pregnant and traveled to Indiana for an abortion, Vance said he has always believed in “reasonable exceptions” and that anybody saying otherwise is “misrepresenting” his view.

“I’ve said repeatedly on the record that the [10-year-old Ohio] girl should be able to get an abortion, if she and her family so choose to do,” he said.

Ryan brought up multiple times throughout the debate how he has supported former President Donald Trump’s stances and initiatives, including the former president’s Space Force service branch. Ryan rattled off a list of Democratic lawmakers he has “taken on,” including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Bernie Sanders and President Joe Biden, again stressing that he agreed with Trump on a number of issues including “trade, renegotiating NAFTA [the North American Free Trade Agreement], being firmer on China.”

When asked by a moderator whether Ryan wanted Biden to run in 2024, Ryan said “no” and that he has been “very clear.”

“I like to see a generational change. With Mitch McConnell. Donald Trump. The president. Everybody,” he said.

On the issue of fixing the opioid crisis in the state, Vance slammed Ryan for doing “nothing to stop the flow of fentanyl,” adding that his family members have been impacted by the “terrible addiction crisis.”

When asked by the moderator about his take on Vice President Kamala Harris’ comments that the “southern border is secure,” Ryan said, “Kamala Harris is absolutely wrong on that. It’s not secure. We have a lot of work to do. I’m not here to just get in a fight or just tiptoe the Democratic Party in line.” He also took the opportunity to bring up Vance’s now-shuttered nonprofit, which has been criticized for not helping fix the opioid crisis but rather jump-starting the Trump-backed nominee’s political career.

Vance denounced claims that his nonprofit is a sham, saying, “None of this is true.”

“I put $80,000 of my own money into that nonprofit, and it absolutely did help people,” Vance said, adding that it is “shameful” for Ryan to attack him given that his family has been impacted by the opioid crisis.

Heading into Election Day, Vance has campaigned heavily on the issue of crime in Ohio. ABC News spoke with the “Hillbilly Elegy” author and former investor at a recent event in Perrysburg, Ohio, where he was joined by former President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

“Let’s declare war on the violent crime on our streets. Let’s let the police go and do their jobs and let’s support them as we do it,” Vance said to supporters at a banquet hall.

He told ABC News afterward, while speaking with reporters, that if elected he would prioritize increasing funding for police.

“We need to probably hire 100,000 additional cops in this country,” he said.

Referring to special legal protections for law enforcement that some Democrats argue are too broad, Vance disagreed and said: “We really have to protect local police officers with qualified immunity.”

ABC News also spoke with Rep. Ryan, most recently at a kick-off event for his statewide bus tour in Warren, Ohio. When asked how he’s prepping before Monday’s debate, Ryan said that he wished the face-off was held sooner.

“We want to get this thing kicked off. But, you know, we’re doing good work,” he said.

He also told ABC News that he can’t “overstate” how important the two debates between him and Vance are going to be because it will show voters what he said is a “contrast” between the two.

“JD has given up on Ohio and I’ve been here fighting like hell for this state, and we’re starting to see some real results. And so that contrast of his extremism versus my pragmatism is going to be very apparent in the next two debates,” Ryan said.

While the party in power often suffers setbacks in midterm races, swing-state Democrats like Ryan have campaigned by seeking to separate themselves from Washington.

He told ABC News that he’s an “independent-minded person,” while Vance has labeled him a “fake moderate.”

In an emailed statement to ABC News, Vance campaign spokesperson Luke Schroeder wrote that “JD is well prepared for the upcoming debates and has found time to prepare between rallies and events. He will have no problem wiping the floor with Tim Ryan.”

A&M Records/UMe

A remastered version of Cat Stevens‘ sixth studio album, 1972’s Catch Bull at Four, will be released on December 2 in multiple formats in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

The album, which can be preordered now, will be available on CD, as a 180-gram vinyl LP and via digital formats. A limited-edition orange-vinyl version of the LP can be purchased exclusively at CatStevens.com, uDiscoverMusic.com and TheSoundofVinyl.us.

Released in September 1972, Catch Bull at Four was Stevens’ only album to top the Billboard 200. It featured one hit single, “Sitting,” which peaked at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Arriving at the height of Stevens’ popularity, Catch Bull at Four found the British singer/songwriter reflecting on his fame and delving deeper into his spiritual beliefs. Musically, the album featured more complex production and a wider range of styles than his previous records.

“Contrary to the spiritual nature and theme of the album, Catch Bull at Four went straight to number one and became one of my biggest commercial accomplishments,” Stevens, who is now also known as Yusuf, notes. “It was scary! I feared it would divert me from my spiritual goal. That’s precisely why I followed it up with an album called Foreigner, which would sacrifice my newly acquired crown for a welcome return to obscurity.”

Catch Bull at Four was produced by founding Yardbirds member Paul Samwell-Smith, who also produced Stevens’ Mona Bone JakonTea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat.

Here’s the album’s full track list:

“Sitting”
“Boy with a Moon & Star on His Head”
“Angelsea”
“Silent Sunlight”
“Can’t Keep It In”
“18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare)”
“Freezing Steel”
“O’Caritas”
“Sweet Scarlet”
“Ruins”

What happens when you combine the guitar of Eddie Van Halen and the vocals of Chris Cornell? Unfortunately, we may never know, but such a song apparently came close to happening.

According to guitarist Pete Thorn, who played in Cornell’s live solo band, the Soundgarden frontman and the Van Halen shredder had developed a friendship, which they one day hoped to channel in the studio.

“Eddie always wanted to do something with Chris musically,” Thorn tells The Mitch Lafon and Jeremy White Show. “Eddie loved his voice.”

As Thorn explains, a Cornell-Van Halen collaboration became a possibility toward the late 2000s, when Thorn was putting together some alternate, stripped-down demos of songs off Cornell’s 2009, electronic and pop-driven solo album, Scream. Upon hearing Thorn’s recordings, Cornell suggested they ask Van Halen to play on them.

While Thorn was waiting for Cornell to reach out to Eddie, he happened upon a friend who built amps for Van Halen. Thorn shared Cornell’s idea with him, who then gave Thorn Van Halen’s number. A few days later, Van Halen called Thorn back and the two set up a recording session. While Van Halen did play on the recording, that’s as far as it got.

“I don’t wanna get anybody excited thinking that this ever got finished, because it didn’t,” Thorn says. “But, [Van Halen] did work on it.”

“It’s a long story, but it never got a vocal on it by Chris,” Thorn continues. “It just never ended up getting finished.”

Sadly, it will stay that way, as Cornell died in 2017, while Van Halen passed in 2020.

“We miss Alex every day”: New ‘Jeopardy!’ hosts speak out in first joint interview
Good Morning America

In their first joint interview since Jeopardy! announced who will fill the shoes of the late, beloved host Alex Trebek, new hosts Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings sat down to talk to Good Morning America about the next era for the long-running game show.

“We miss Alex every day. But luckily, it still feels like Jeopardy!” Jennings said.

The show’s executive producer, Michael Davies, announced in July that Bialik and Jennings would become the show’s official co-hosts permanently. Both were among a string of guest hosts who filled in temporarily after Trebek died of cancer in 2020.

Bialik is a four-time Emmy-nominated actress who is best known for her television sitcom roles in Blossom and The Big Bang Theory. Jennings holds the record for the longest winning streak on the game show, with 74 consecutive wins.

Jennings said that because he had played so many games, he thought he would have a “pretty good sense” of what hosting would be like, but said he was quickly proven wrong. “You realize hosting’s even harder because you basically have to do everything the contestants do, plus manage the game for them, plus manage the game for the home viewer,” Jennings said.

Bialik joked, “And not make faces.” She explained, “I think for both of us, we feel like we’re really ushering in what Alex facilitated so beautifully, which is, again, highlighting contestants and the show that people know and love. I think for me and Ken, we do love the purity and the fun Jeopardy! has been and will continue to be.”

Jennings said of the hosting duties, “Some nights it’s gonna be me. Some nights it’s gonna be Mayim. But it’s always Jeopardy!

NeNe Leakes‘ son Brentt Leakes is recovering after being hospitalized for a stroke and heart failure, the Real Housewives of Atlanta star confirmed Monday.

Leakes took to social media with an update that the 23-year-old has been “struggling with speaking” since the scary incident earlier this month but has “shown some improvement and we’re really happy and blessed for that.”

In her video posted via IG Stories, later shared by The Neighborhood Talk, the reality star says her son had a stroke two weeks ago. It was her decision to speak publicly about it so the “correct” narrative could be told.

“This is not the way I wanted it to come out. We wanted to be able to talk about it ourself when Brentt was in a better place,” Leakes said. “So, here I am because I would rather the correct thing be out there than something that’s not correct.”

Leakes says the cause is still unknown, though doctors did rule out drugs, HIV and other infections.

“They have run a number of tests on him to see what could have possibly made this happen to him,” she explained. “And we are still trying to figure out. Because if we knew the cause, obviously they could treat the cause. It was very scary.”

The 54-year-old star also noted doctors could consider it a genetic condition and that her son has been “super stressed” during the one-year anniversary of his father Gregg Leakes‘ passing in September.

Leakes says her son is “in good spirits” after talking to him via FaceTime Monday morning.

William Shatner’s takeaway from space trip: “Grief”

Blue Origin

When William Shatner traveled to space in October 2021, Star Trek‘s 91-year-old Captain Kirk says he was left with a feeling he didn’t expect: “Grief.”

Variety has published an excerpt from his new book, Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder. In it, Shatner explains that once he and his fellow travelers reached the weightlessness of space in the Blue Origins craft, he headed right to a window “to stare into space.”

“I love the mystery of the universe. I love all the questions that have come to us over thousands of years of exploration and hypotheses,” the actor wrote. “[B]ut when I looked in the opposite direction, into space, there was no mystery, no majestic awe to behold … all I saw was death.”

Shatner added, “I saw a cold, dark, black emptiness. It was unlike any blackness you can see or feel on Earth … Everything I had expected to see was wrong.”

He mused, “It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness. Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna … things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread.”

Shatner summarized: “My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.”
