New Utah wildfire triples in size, prompting evacuations and closing a highway The Cottonwood Fire is one of 342 active wildfires burning across Utah

(NEW YORK) — A wildfire burning in Utah tripled in size overnight, prompting mandatory evacuations of homes and campgrounds and completely closing a highway in the mountainous area.

Fueled by drought conditions and wind gusts up to 50 mph, the Cottonwood Fire in Beaver County started Monday afternoon and spread rapidly overnight, according to Utah Fire Info.

As of Tuesday morning, the blaze has burned more than 10,000 acres and was 0% contained, officials said.

The Cottonwood Fire ignited around 3:36 p.m. on Monday, threatening populated areas in Beaver County, according to officials.

Just after 9 p.m. local time on Monday, residents in the Eagle Point and Merchant Valley areas of Beaver County were ordered to evacuate immediately as flames bore down on the area, authorities said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The Cottonwood Fire is one of 342 wildfires currently burning across Utah, consuming more than 64,000 acres combined, according to Utah Fire Info.

The biggest active fire is the Iron Fire burning in Juab County, about 28 miles southwest of Provo. As of Tuesday morning, the Iron Fire had burned 31,304 acres and was 9% contained, said Al Nash, public information officer for the Great Basin Team 3, a federal agency in charge of the incident.

Nash told ABC News that firefighters battling the Iron Fire are bracing for another day of hot, dry and windy conditions.

The fire has prompted numerous evacuations in the area, including the complete evacuation of the town of Eureka, which has a population of just over 600.

“Our firefighters are expecting to have another challenging day,” said Nash, adding that humidity is expected to drop into the single digits.

Kelly Wicken, a spokesperson for the Utah Division of Forestry, said the blaze started on private land and has now spread across Juab and two other counties, crossing onto federal land and shutting down a highway.

Before the fire, the National Weather Service had issued red flag fire danger warnings for a large part of the state.

Red flag warnings for fire weather danger are in place across southern Utah and through much of western and central Colorado. Strong winds and low humidity are expected to fuel the existing fires and enable new fires to spark and spread rapidly.

3-year-old boy dies after being left in hot car in Florida: Sheriff

(RIVERVIEW, Fla.) — A 3-year-old boy died after being left in a hot car in Florida, according to authorities.

Deputies responded to a home in Riverview, just outside of Tampa, at about 10:40 p.m. Saturday after the boy’s father found him unresponsive in a parked car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

The boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

The temperature hit a scorching 95 degrees in Riverview on Saturday, and with humidity, it felt hotter than 100 degrees.

It’s not clear how long the boy was in the car.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister called the death a “tragedy” and warned, “A vehicle can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.”

“We urge every parent and caregiver in our community to make hot vehicle safety a priority,” the sheriff said in a statement. “Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a moment.”

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.

At least eight children have died in hot cars so far this year in the U.S., according to national nonprofit KidsAndCars.org. Last year, at least 37 children died in hot cars across the country, KidsAndCars.org said.

Knicks pun-filled custom tees were Taylor Swift’s ‘genius’ idea, says Este Haim

When Taylor Swift and her pals attended Game 4 of the NBA Finals on June 10, they made headlines not just because people were accusing Taylor of not being a “real” fan, but because of the custom shirts they were wearing.

The tees, worn by Taylor, Mariska Hargitay, and Este Haim and Alana Haim of the band HAIM, featured the names of famous people misspelled with a “Kn,” in honor of the New York Knicks, like “Stevie Knicks,” “Knickole Kidman” and the band “Knickelback.”

Now, Este tells People, “Taylor is a genius. She was the one that came up with the idea, and Alana was the one that executed it.” Alana custom-made the shirts by hand and said Taylor came up with “Stevie Knicks” specifically.

As for Nicole Kidman, Este tells People, “I mean, it’s no secret that we love her, we’re huge fans of hers. And it kind of lent itself to the T-shirt. It was the first name that came to mind when we were all brainstorming what Knicks-themed names we would use.”

After seeing Este in the “Knickole Kidman” shirt, Nicole shared a photo of the trio at the game to her Instagram Stories and wrote, “Right there with you girls!”

The third member of HAIM, Danielle Haim, was also at the game that night — she wore a shirt that said “Knickolas Cage.” And later that same night, Taylor’s friend sombr was seen out at a club in a “Stevie Knicks” shirt.

In other Taylor news, on Monday she supported her fiancé Travis Kelce at his annual Tight End University training camp in Nashville by attending the opening night party.

Fear of the Dark: Iron Maiden’s Paris show cut short due to power outage

Iron Maiden fans had to confront their “Fear of the Dark” when the power went out during the band’s show in Paris on Monday.

According to fan reports and a recap from the site SortiraParis.com, the Paris La Défense Arena went dark in the middle of a performance of the song “2 Minutes to Midnight.” The outage happened as France is dealing with an extreme heat wave.

Unfortunately, fans had to wait for much longer than two minutes for the show to resume. Maiden eventually retook the stage after about an hour, but due to the delay and the venue’s curfew, the set’s encore was cut from the show.

Ahead of the Paris show, Maiden announced that they were filming the concert to document their Run for Your Lives tour, and that all fans standing in the floor section would be required to lock their phones in Yondr pouches. We’ll see if the power outage impacts the planned film at all.

The Run for Your Lives tour, which celebrates Maiden’s 50th anniversary, will continue through Europe into mid-July before coming to North America in late August.

The Killers’ Brandon Flowers announces new solo album, ’Thrasher’

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has announced a new solo album called Thrasher.

The “Mr. Brightside” singer’s third solo effort, and his first since 2015’s The Desired Effect, is due out Aug. 21. The lead single, titled “Plans,” will premiere on Friday.

In a trailer for Thrasher, streaming now on YouTube, Flowers previews the upcoming record’s country music influence.

“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found my way back to my father’s music – ‘Country-Western’ (as he called it) – and discovered that the stories I carry really feel most at home in the skin of this beautiful American tradition,” Flowers says in a statement.

The Killers’ most recent album is 2021’s Pressure Machine.

Eric Clapton and ZZ Top’s Billy F Gibbons are among the artists set to perform at a concert celebrating blues legend Buddy Guy’s 90th birthday.

Buddy’s Got the Blues: A 90th Birthday Concert Celebration, happening Oct. 1 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, is described in a press release as a concert that will celebrate Guy through “unforgettable performances, once-in-a-lifetime collaborations, and heartfelt tributes from artists whose music and careers were profoundly shaped by his influence.”

The lineup also includes John Mayer, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark Jr., Jon Batiste, Aloe Blacc, Robert Cray, Robert Randolph and Jimmie Vaughan, among others.

Supreme Court denies Rastafarian’s lawsuit after he was forcibly shaved bald behind bars

(WASHINGTON) — A narrowly divided Supreme Court on Tuesday denied a Louisiana man the ability to sue state prison officials for damages after they forcibly shaved him bald behind bars, allegedly violating his religious rights as a devout Rastafarian.

In a 6-3 decision, the court’s conservative majority said federal law did not permit the plaintiff, Damon Landor, to seek money from individual state employees.

Landor, whose locks of hair had grown uncut for 20 years, has said he felt “raped” by the experience.

The ruling was a victory for states, which said such claims could bankrupt them.

Religious rights advocates warned that it would severely restrict the ability of victims of religious discrimination to sue for justice and accountability.

New Smashing Pumpkins tribute album announced, featuring Tame Impala, Palaye Royale & more

Despite all their rage, The Smashing Pumpkins are getting their own tribute album.

The record, titled Sending Hearts to All My Dearies – A Tribute to The Smashing Pumpkins, is due out digitally on Aug. 14 and will be released as a two-LP vinyl set on Oct. 16.

Artists contributing to the compilation include Tame Impala, Palaye Royale, Nita Strauss, Meg Myers, Barns Courtney, Bones UK and Des Rocs, among others.

You can listen to Tame Impala’s contribution, a rendition of the Siamese Dream cut “Hummer,” out now.

“Siamese Dream was the soundtrack to my high school years and ‘Hummer’ is the song that takes me back there in the most potent way,” Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker says in a statement.

If you want to hear The Smashing Pumpkins play Smashing Pumpkins songs, you can catch them live on their The Rats in a Cage tour. ‘American Idol’ stars, Billy Joel & more react to Clive Davis’ death

The death of legendary record executive Clive Davis at age 94 continues to reverberate throughout the music industry, since he was personally responsible for the careers of many artists.

Clive signed Billy Joel to Columbia Records, where he remained for his entire career. Billy said in a statement, “He recognized the talent of great musicians and understood the power of contemporary music. I will always be grateful to Clive for his recognition of the critical importance of songwriting.”

Clive helped revive Dionne Warwick’s career in the ’80s with songs like “I’ll Never Love This Way Again” and “Heartbreaker.” She said in a statement, “I can think of no other record man that seemed to have that magical ability to know a hit when he heard a song.”

On Instagram, Barbra Streisand credited Clive with helping her update her sound. “In the early 1970s, the times they were a’changin’…socially, politically, and of course, musically,” she wrote. “As the head of Columbia Records, Clive recognized these changes and encouraged me to … record an album of songs by contemporary writers like Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro and Gordon Lightfoot. The album Stoney End opened new doors for me. I’m forever grateful for Clive’s vision and support.”

Clive was the head of the record label that released the music of American Idol winners in the show’s early years. Jennifer Hudson, a finalist on season 3, wrote on Instagram, “This was a huge blow to wake up to. I know nobody lives forever, but Clive’s impact and legacy will always live on! Yes, he was the legendary music mogul, but he was family to me. … You will be missed, Clive! We will always celebrate your life and legacy.”

Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks wrote, “The great Clive Davis and I used to yell at each other. Our chemistry from artist to legendary label head was edgy but we both had one goal in common, to create the best art I could. … I was honored to know him and yell at him 😉 Rest in Peace Clive, you were a legend.”

Season 5 finalist Chris Daughtry paid tribute to Clive, writing, “Thank you for believing in and taking a chance on a 26 year old me… A singer songwriter from North Carolina who couldn’t even win a TV singing competition. Thank you for seeing something more in me. Thank you for being the only record exec out of the 6 that I met with to show genuine interest in MY songs.”

He then recalled playing “Home” in front of Clive for the first time, and Clive saying, “Well… that sounds like a hit.” “My heart almost exploded out of my chest. I will never forget this moment. You will be missed sir,” he added.

Savannah Guthrie speaks out after reports that ransom note said Nancy Guthrie died after kidnapping

(NEW YORK) — An emotional Savannah Guthrie spoke out on Tuesday following new reports that a ransom note said her mother, Nancy Guthrie, died shortly after she was abducted.

The “Today” show host’s 84-year-old mother was kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of Feb. 1 and remains missing, according to authorities.

Various ransom notes were sent to the media in the days after Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. The second ransom note received by a Tucson television station, days after Nancy Guthrie’s abduction, said she died shortly after she was taken and was buried in nature, sources familiar with the investigation told ABC News.

Savannah Guthrie wiped away tears as she addressed the news on “Today,” saying, “I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here.”

“And so, since I am, I wanted to just take the opportunity to ask people — to really, to beg people — to come forward,” she said. “Somebody knows something.”

“This is a news story today that is on your radar, but this is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live, every day. And we are in agony,” Savannah Guthrie said through tears.

“Please do the right thing. … We love our mom, and we’ll never stop looking for her, ever,” she said.

Images from Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera showing a masked man at her house were released by authorities early on in the investigation, but the 84-year-old’s whereabouts remain unknown, and the suspect remains unidentified.
