Graham Nash, Jackson Browne appear in new doc about late singer/songwriter Judee Sill

Graham Nash, Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt are featured in a new documentary about obscure 1970s singer/songwriter Judee Sill that will get its world premiere on November 13 in New York City as part of the 2022 DOC NYC festival.

Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill takes an intimate look at life of the Los Angeles-based artist, who was discovered by music mogul David Geffen and released two albums during the early ’70s before withdrawing from the music business and dying of a drug overdose at age 35 in 1979.

The movie also examines Judee’s troubled early life, during which she battled addiction, took part in armed robberies and spent time in prison.

The film features interviews with Nash, Browne, Ronstadt and Geffen, as well as with acclaimed songwriter JD Souther and singer Shawn Colvin, and also includes appearances by various younger artists who discovered Sill’s music after her death.

Nash produced Sill’s first single, “Jesus Was a Cross Maker,” and played organ on the track. The song later was covered by Cass Elliot, The Hollies, Warren Zevon and Ronstadt, among others.

The premiere screening of Lost Angel will take place at SVA Theatre at 8 p.m. ET, and will be followed by a Q&A session featuring directors Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom, Colvin and producer Peter Kenney.

Tickets to the screening can be purchased at DOCNYC.net. The film also will be available to view via streaming from November 14 at midnight ET through November 27 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson to be honored as MusiCares’ 2023 Persons of the Year

For the first time ever, the Recording Academy’s annual MusiCares Person of the Year event will salute two separate honorees next year.

Motown founder Berry Gordy and legendary Motown singer, songwriter and producer Smokey Robinson will be recognized as the 2023 MusiCares Persons of the Year at the organization’s 32nd annual benefit gala, which will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on February 3, two nights before the 65th annual Grammy Awards.

As usual, the event will feature an all-star concert paying tribute the honorees, and next year’s show will celebrate the music and legacy of Motown. The gala also features a dinner and a silent auction offering VIP experiences, celebrity memorabilia and more.

“Wow! How honored I am to be named the MusiCares Persons of the Year, and together with my best friend of over 65 years, the great Smokey Robinson,” says Gordy. “How special is that!”

Adds Robinson, “I have supported MusiCares for many years and know what great work they do for our creative community who need our help. Recently, when no one could tour, they were a lifeline to those in the touring industry for monetary help and mental health services. I am honored that they have chosen me and my best friend and Motown founder Berry Gordy to share this beautiful honor and celebrate with you all together.”

The gala benefits the MusiCares Foundation, which provides medical, financial and personal assistance to in-need members of the music community.

Jeffrey Dahmer continues to haunt Netflix’s TV chart

Netflix users apparently can’t get their fill of content related to notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, a three-part docuseries featuring interviews with the infamous figure himself, generated some 27 million hours viewed on the streaming platform last week, just as Dahmer: Monster The Jeffrey Dahmer Story dropped to #2 on Netflix’s English TV chart. Conversations currently ranks #4 on that list.

Monster, which stars Evan Peters as Dahmer, has spent four weeks on the streaming service’s global Top 10 chart. As reported, the drama is the second most-watched English TV title of all time for Netflix, with more than 824 million hours viewed behind only the fourth season of Stranger Things.

Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson named 2023 MusiCares Persons of the Year

Motown founder Berry Gordy and Grammy Award-winner Smokey Robinson will be honored at the 2023 MusiCares Persons of the Year, the Recording Academy announced Thursday.

For the first time, the high honor will go to two music legends; the 32nd annual gala will take place in Los Angeles on February 3, two nights before the 65th annual Grammy Awards.

Gordy, the creator of Motown, alongside Robinson, his first writer and artist, have created an indelible legacy in popular music spanning more than six decades. The longtime friends will accept the prestigious award together.

“Wow! How honored I am to be named the MusiCares Persons of the Year, and together with my best friend of over 65 years,” Robinson said.

How special is that!” Gordy said. “I am grateful to be included in MusiCares’ remarkable history of music icons. The work they do is so critical to the well-being of our music community, and I look forward to a most exciting evening.”

Carly Pearce’s headlining Ryman shows will conclude her 29 album cycle

Carly Pearce’s 29: Written in Stone album has brought the singer’s career to new heights — even helping to earn her induction into the Grand Ole Opry — and given her memories she’ll cherish forever. But now, it’s time to move on.

The grand finale of the 29 album cycle will take place next week when Carly takes the stage to headline two sold-out nights at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium.

“To be able to come off this crazy last, really, two years, and come home to Nashville and play two proper nights in the place that I love so much, that I dreamt of singing in my whole life, is going to be so special. And it’s actually kind of the way we’re gonna end the year,” Carly explains in an interview with her label.

“And I think it’s a really great way to kind of put 29 down — let her live, obviously, in my career forever, but also turn the page a bit in a really exciting way,” she adds.

29: Written in Stone first came out in September 2021. Its third and final single, “What He Didn’t Do,” is currently climbing the charts, and Carly recently released a music video to go along with the track.

Carly’s headlining Ryman dates are set for October 26 and 27.

Taylor Swift was teasing ’Midnights’ as early as her NYU commencement speech

Sneaky, sneaky Taylor!

Taylor Swift is a “Mastermind” when it comes to slipping Easter eggs into her social media posts, but it turns out she was teasing Midnights months before we even knew she was working on her 10th studio album.

We know this thanks to Taylor’s partnership with Spotify to help promote Midnights by releasing snippets of song lyrics in countries around the world. Thursday morning, a new lyric went up in Mexico City that read, “Breathe in, breath through, breathe deep, breathe out.”

Those are the same words Taylor used in her commencement address at New York University way back in May. She had told the graduating class at the time, “And as long as we are fortunate enough to be breathing, we will breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep, breathe out.”

Fans then began poring over the address to see if, maybe, there were more clues hidden within the inspiring speech.

Taylor also said this in her speech: “Everything is connected by my love of the craft, the thrill of working through ideas, and narrowing them down and polishing it all up in the end, editing. Waking up in the middle of the night, throwing out the old idea because you just thought of a new or better one, or a plot device that ties the whole thing together.”

In addition to referencing midnight, she previously released the lyrics “I polish up real nice” in London and “I should not be left to my own devices” in New York City.

Taylor may have also slipped a song title when she told the graduates, “Scary news is, you’re on your own now. Cool news is, you’re on your own now.”

That mirrors the album’s fifth track, titled “You’re on Your Own, Kid.”

Midnights arrives Friday, October 21.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ could have 2022’s second-biggest opening

The film doesn’t come out until November 11, but prognosticators say Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is already on track to have the second-biggest opening of the year.

According to data from the National Research Group (NRG), the sequel could see a $175 million opening weekend, putting it slightly behind 2022’s biggest debut, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That film earned more than $184 million, on its way to a more than $955 million global take.

The Black Panther sequel has big shoes to fill, both thematically and financially: The sequel will be the first Panther film without lead Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer in 2020, and 2018’s original earned more than $242 million on its four-day opening weekend, going on to become a $1.34-billion grossing phenomenon.

The biggest opening film of all time is 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which earned more than $347 million in its first days in theaters. In 2021, the Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures collab Spider-Man: No Way Home earned the second-biggest debut slot with a global take of more than $260 million.

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.

Michael Bublé won’t just perform and guest judge on Dancing with the Stars on Monday night — he’s also the night’s guest of honor as all competitors will be dancing to his music.

Here’s a sneak peek into next week’s show. The night will open with the DWTS pro dancers putting on a dazzling performance as Michael performs his hit song “Sway.”

Derek Hough and his fiancé Hayley Erbert will also put on their dancing shoes to electrify the ballroom with a resounding number to “Higher.” This will become a full circle moment for all three as Hough helped choreograph the song’s music video, during which Michael danced with Erbert.

As for the 10 remaining couples competing for the Mirrorball, here’s a rundown of the Michael songs that each of them will be dancing to.

Comedian Wayne Brady will start the night with a quickstep to “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” while TikToker Charli D’Amelio will take over with a foxtrot to “Fever.” Her mom, Heidi D’Amelio, will dance third with a samba to “It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio Stasera)”.

Country star Jessie James Decker will dance the salsa to “Come Dance With Me,,” while TV star Trevor Donovan will foxtrot to “Come Fly With Me.” CODA actor Daniel Durant will perform sixth by also dancing the foxtrot to “Feeling Good.”

Jersey Shore‘s Vinny Guadagnino will then cha cha to “Save The Last Dance For Me,” followed by drag star Shangela, who’ll be doing a tango to “Hollywood.” Jordin Sparks will then foxtrot to “You Make Me Feel So Young,” while Bachelorette star Gabby Windey will close the night with a rumba to “Home.”

Yungblud announces digital premiere of ‘Mars’ short film

Yungblud has announced the digital premiere of his upcoming short film Mars, which was inspired by the British rocker’s 2020 song of the same name.

The 21-minute movie will screen via the streaming platform Moment on November 17. The premiere falls in the middle of Transgender Awareness Week, which takes place November 13-19.

The online event will also feature an introduction from Yungblud and Mars star Yasmin Finney as well as a panel hosted by LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD.

“I’m so honored to present you our beautiful film Mars,” Yungblud says. “I believe this is the start of something truly groundbreaking and truly special. This all came from the idea that we could facilitate bringing characters to life by assembling a team of cast and crew that fully represent the communities whose stories we wanted to tell.”

“We set out to bring talented creatives together, some experienced, some whose star was already rising and some who’d never been on a film set before,” he adds. “Giving people a platform to tell their stories with truth and integrity means so much to me and I feel that’s what we’ve achieved with this film.”

Simone Biles wants people to keep the Dahmer Halloween costumes “back in the closet”: “we ain’t having it!”

Simone Biles wants anyone thinking about dressing up as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for Halloween to think twice.

The gymnastics star took to Twitter to express her disapproval of the idea, urging people to put the costumes “back in the closet.”

“im just gon go head and say it, put the jeffrey dahmer costumes back in the closet,” she wrote, adding, “we ain’t having it!!!!!!”

Biles’ post follows last month’s release of Netflix’s true crime series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and the heightened public interest in one of the most notorious killers in U.S. history.

Over the span of more than a decade, Dahmer brutally murdered 17 people, predominately Black men and boys, engaging in horrific cruelty with their bodies. Impersonating the killer, many social media users say, is a sign of disrespect to the families’ victims.

Iterations of the costume were being sold on eBay until the website banned Dahmer-inspired items, according to Buzzfeed.

“These items are prohibited for sale on our site and we are removing them,” a spokesperson for eBay told BuzzFeed News.

Not long after its premiere, rapper Boosie called on the Black community to boycott the series.

“AS BLACK PEOPLE WE SHOULD BOYCOTT THE JEFFERY [sic] DAHMER MOVIE,” the rapper wrote. “WHAT HE DID TO OUR BLACK KIDS IS F******G SICK #NETFLIXTAKE THIS MOVIE DOWN ITS SICK.”
