The Goonies was a rare 1985 blockbuster that, despite its success, never got a sequel — but not for lack of trying.
The treasure-hunting adventure starred Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin and Ke Huy Quan, among others, and was based on a story by Steven Spielberg and directed by the late Richard Donner. Before the pandemic, and Donner’s 2021 death, Josh Gadreunited the cast and the filmmakers virtually, with Spielberg admitting that he, Donner and screenwriter Christopher Columbus have “had a lot of conversations” about a follow-up in the decades since the movie came out. But he said they hadn’t “been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the ’80s.”
That said, fans are still eager for the kinks to be worked out, so much so that Quan was asked about it Tuesday night after his Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe win for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Kwan, whose first movie was Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, noted backstage, “Well, first of all, we have the big man here tonight, Steven Spielberg. And that would be one question that I think all of us want to ask him.”
He added, “Honestly, I think they worked really hard. We had numerous scripts, but there was not one script that … felt it could … live up to what the, you know, the original was. And I really don’t know if there’s going to be a Goonies 2, but I would be open to revisiting that character Data if there is an opportunity.”
(NEW YORK) — COVID-19 remained the leading cause of law enforcement deaths in 2022 despite the number attributed to the virus dramatically declining.
A new report released Wednesday by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund looked at preliminary data and found that 226 federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement officers died last year while in the line of duty.
Of those deaths, 70 can be attributed to COVID-19. However, this is an 83% decline compared to the 405 officers who died from COVID-19-related complications in 2021.
“While America’s law enforcement officers are still battling the deadly effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant reduction in such overall deaths, likely attributed to reduced infection rates and the broad availability and use of vaccinations,” the report read.
Marcia Ferranto, CEO of NLEOMF, told ABC News to recognize an officer line of duty death from COVID as such, each case is reviewed by a medical team and then by a group of 13 law enforcement peers.
“At that point, it is determined whether this would be considered a line of duty death,” she said. “At this point, for 2022, we’re looking at recognizing 70 of these COVID-related cases as official line of duty deaths and each one, tragic.”
In 2021, 586 officers died in the line of duty, a 61% decline year-over-year, that can be attributed directly to the reduction of COVID-19 deaths.
According to the report, firearms-related incidents were the second-highest cause of death in 2022, followed by traffic-related incidents and other.
The “other” category included health-related deaths including heart attacks, stroke and effects from the September 11 attacks as well as accidents including aircraft crashes, falling objects, fires and falling to their deaths.
The report found that Texas had the highest number of law enforcement COVID-19 deaths with 16, followed by Illinois with six, New York with five, Alabama with four and Oklahoma and Tennessee with four each.
Overall, of the 226 fatalities, 204 were male and 22 were female. The average age was 44 years old with an average of 15 years of service. Additionally, each officer left an average of two children behind.
“These numbers bring it close to home and really humanize these men and women, these incredible men and women who are choosing law enforcement as their profession,” Ferranto said.
She said an investment in officer safety and wellness programs can hopefully help drive down these numbers even further in 2023.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, only has the virus been the leading cause of death among law enforcement officers but firefighters and other protection service employees had the occupations with the highest death rates from COVID-19.
According to a recent report published by the National Center for Health Statistics — a branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — those with protective service occupations had the highest COVID-19 death rate at 60.3 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2020.
This was twice as high as the overall workers’ COVID-19 death rate in 2020, which sits at 28.6 per 100,000.
The authors of the report said this was likely attributed to protective service employees not having jobs that allow them to stay at home as well as working in proximity to others — both colleagues and the public — increasing their risk of infection.
One of those deaths was Niagara Falls Police Department detective Kristina Zell, who passed away from a COVID-related illness in November 2022.
According to local affiliate WKBW, Zell began her career with the NFPD in March 2000 and worked her way up from patrol officer to a detective specializing in sex crime investigations.

The tour takes its name from the North Carolina native’s fourth album, which came out in 2014.
Demi Lovato‘s posters advertising their Holy Fvck album are now banned in the United Kingdom because they apparently offended Christians.
BBC reports the six posters, which depicted the album’s artwork, were taken down because they are said to have combined sexuality with religion. The Advertising Standards Authority made the move after four complaints were lodged over seeing Demi “bound up in a bondage-style outfit whilst lying on a mattress shaped like a crucifix.”
The ASA said Demi was “in a position with her legs bound to one side which was reminiscent of Christ on the cross.” Because these elements were a “serious offense” to Christians, the organization ruled the posters were “likely to be viewed as linking sexuality to the sacred symbol of the crucifix and the crucifixion.”
In addition to the imagery, British officials didn’t like the album’s title, which technically is a curse word since a “v” takes place of the “u” in the F-word. The ASA said the posters were erected where children could see them. Because of that, they “considered that the ad was likely to result in serious and widespread offense and had been targeted irresponsibly.”
The posters had been put up by Polydor Records, a facet of Universal Music Operations Ltd., when Holy Fvck arrived in August. The company claims it checked with an agency that specializes in outdoor advertising, which reviewed and signed off on the posters, before putting them up. Despite getting the green light, the six posters were removed four days after the complaints were made.
Universal Music Operations Ltd. has since been warned by the ASA to not cause offense in the future.
Holy Fvck was released August 19, 2022. It is Demi’s eighth studio album.
Tuesday marked seven years since David Bowie passed away after a private battle with cancer, and both his wife, Iman, and their 22-year-old daughter, Alexandria ‘Lexi’ Zahra Jones, marked the day with tributes on social media.
Lexi shared video of them playing keyboards together when she was young, along with a childhood photo, writing, “7 years ago today. I miss you ❤️ .”
Her mom, Iman, also marked the day with a post, sharing a beautiful black-and-white photo of them and writing, “January 10th. For a couple of moments in the immensity of time, we were one,” with #EternalLove#BowieForever.
Bowie died of liver cancer on January 10, 2016, 18 months after being diagnosed with the disease. He never publicly disclosed his illness.

The Jennifer Hudson Show has resonated with viewers, so much so it’s been renewed for a second season.
Hudson announced the news during Wednesday’s episode after expressing her gratitude for her new platform and the support she’s received.
“The Jennifer Hudson Show has been renewed for season 2,” she said, to which the crowd responded with a standing ovation. “Don’t you want to run and shout?”
Hudson discussed the importance of reflecting on the blessings you once prayed for.
“I think this happens to all of us as adults,” she said. “We’re so busy doing stuff that we never stop to think about, ‘This is what I prayed for, this is what I wanted, it’s happening.’ And embrace it. Well, this is one of those moments.”
She then thanked the crew, the staff, the guests, her fans and her son, David.
“I want to say thank you to my son, who has always been so supportive of his mom and just being such an inspiration of a child and just being there in support,” she said.
Created and produced by Hudson and JHud Productions, season 1 of The Jennifer Hudson Show premiered on September 12 and has averaged 5.2 million weekly viewers, according to People.
In a statement to the outlet, Hudson said that “working on this show alongside my incredible team and our amazing partners has been one of the greatest joys of my career.”
“I am so thrilled to take it to the next level,” she continued. “I can’t wait to show you what we have up our sleeves in season 2!”
With the Golden Globe Awards in the rear-view mirror, awards season is in full swing, and to that end the Screen Actors Guild has announced this year’s nominees.
The SAG Awards also announced that beginning in 2024, it will air globally on Netflix; this year it will be broadcast on Netflix’s YouTube channel, as opposed to its longtime home at TNT and TBS.
This year’s winners will be revealed Sunday, February 26, live from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

Is Billie Eilish engaged? Some eagle-eyed fans are freaking out over what they think they saw in her latest Instagram post.
Billie shared a series of snaps of her posing seductively by her bed and wearing an all-black outfit, which included sheer stockings, strappy heels and a long velvet skirt. But it isn’t her clothing that is making fans sound the alarm — it’s what appears to be on her left ring finger.
Two snaps in the middle of the slideshow are taken from above and show Billie’s left arm resting by her side. Some fans appeared to have zoomed in on her hand and claim there’s a sparkler on her ring finger.
They also contend that another slide appears to show Billie looking down at her ring, which they believe is all the proof they need that she’s hinting to a major new development in her life.
While Billie has yet to address the rumors, she recently confirmed her romance with her boyfriend, Jesse Rutherford. The two were first romantically linked back in October when she and The Neighbourhood frontman were spotted holding hands at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Billie revealed she initiated the relationship and described how happy Jesse makes her.
(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) — Matthew Haynes has 20 years of memories at Club Q, the site of the Nov. 19 shooting that left five people dead and dozens more injured in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
As the co-owner of the LGBTQ bar, Haynes says in the aftermath of the shooting, he has been contemplating the bar’s significance in the community and its role in helping the community continue to recover from the tragic event — and rebuilding the bar is part of that goal.
Club Q was a place where people met their significant others, where they made new friends, where they’ve “grown up,” Haynes said.
“The biggest takeaway that this community has had, that I concur with, is that [the shooter] will not win,” Haynes told ABC News. “This man will not take away our space. This man will not destroy this community.”
The suspect is facing 305 charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder and bias-motivated crimes.
Haynes, alongside the bar’s advisory and development team, said they will restructure the inside of the bar, implement new security precautions, and build a memorial to honor the lives lost, as well as the lives affected.
It’s unclear what a memorial would look like, or how long a rebuild will take, Haynes said. He said he is hoping for a four-monthlong remodeling process, with hopes of a May reopening — but the path forward remains uncertain.
In recent meetings with city officials, including Colorado Springs mayor John Suthers, Haynes said Suthers has put Club Q staff in touch with an architecture firm to plan a memorial and address the damage done to the inside of the bar during the shooting, pro bono.
According to Haynes, the city has also assigned a supervisor to work through the technical processes needed to get the business back up and running.
“Colorado Springs is a welcoming and vibrant community. We are supportive of the efforts underway to redesign and rebuild Club Q and believe this will be an important step to heal and to honor the lives lost in November’s tragic shooting,” Suthers said in a statement to ABC News.
“From every aspect, from the police department to the FBI, to anything that’s underneath the city and certainly from the state — a this point, we are feeling fully supported,” Haynes said.
Haynes said he doesn’t want to just fix the damage done — he wants to make aesthetic changes to the bar, so it can be a welcoming and freeing environment for those who were present in the bar on that tragic night.
“In talking to the victims that were actually shot, they [want] to have it changed up a little bit … would help with some of the trauma,” Haynes said.
Since the tragedy, the bar owners and staff have also been tending to an ever-growing memorial outside of Club Q, lush with flowers, cards and artwork.
They’ve preserved many of the gifts left at Club Q’s doors, and Haynes said they hope to create a permanent memorial at the location to honor not just those who died or were injured, but also the “thousands that have been impacted.”
“The plan is to make it serene, to make it peaceful, to make it full of the life that they were living when this happened to them,” Haynes said.
He thanked supporters nationwide for the support the community has received in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“We take our responsibility very seriously and we’re all very passionate about it,” Haynes said. “We certainly would like to thank everybody for the support and the love and the thousands of cards we have received, the letters we have received, donations directly to the rebuilding, donations in the millions of dollars to all of the victims. There’s just been such an outpouring of kindness and so so we’re very humbled to be in this position.”
