The nominations for the 2023 NAACP Awards have been announced, recognizing the work of several African Americans across film, television, theater, music and literature. Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverand its accompanying cast are standout nominees alongside The Woman King and Quinta Brunson‘s Abbott Elementary.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Woman King dominated in the motion picture categories, earning 15 and 12 nominations, respectively, including nods for Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. Black Panther star Letitia Wright was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, while Tenoch Huerta is up for the male equivalent. Castmates Angela Bassett, Lupita N’yongo and Danai Gurira are among those listed for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
The Woman King‘s Viola Davis and John Boyega were nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Motion Picture, with Lashana Lynch earning nod for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
Leading in the television categories is Abbott Elementary. Abbott and its cast have earned a total of nine nods, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Quinta’s also nominated for Best Breakthrough Creative for her work on the show. black-ish was nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, with cast members Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Deon Cole, Jenifer Lewis and Marsai Martin getting nods for their characters on the series.
On the music front, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar lead the pack with five nominations. Bey’s nominated for Outstanding Female Artist and Outstanding Album for Renaissance, while Kendrick’s nods include Outstanding Male Artist, Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song for “The Heart Part 5” and Outstanding Album for Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
The NAACP Image Awards air February 25 at 8 p.m. ET on BET.
Dr. Dre is selling some of his music assets and income streams to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music for more than $200 million.
According to Billboard, Shamrock is reportedly acquiring the portion of the bundle that includes royalties from two of his solo projects, his producer royalties, his share of N.W.A. artist royalties and the writer’s share of the part of his discography where he doesn’t own publishing.
The remaining portion, which is comprised of the master recordings for Dre’s The Chronic, his share of Kendrick Lamar’s releases through TDE’s deal with Interscope and his Aftermath imprint, will go to UMG.
Dre’s assets are said to generate almost $10 million in annual income, per Billboard. Shamrock’s portion makes up 75% to 90% of the package’s revenue, while UMG’s portion comprises 10% to 25% of the overall income.
Genesisis set to drop the new collection BBC Broadcasts on March 3, which will feature Genesis performances recorded by the BBC between 1970 and 1998.
The set, curated by founding member Tony Banks, will be released as a 53-track, five-CD set, as well as a 24-track, three-LP set, with many of the songs being released on vinyl for the first time. Only a handful of the songs have previously gotten an official release.
BBC Broadcasts will include music from Genesis’ three lead vocalists — Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Ray Wilson — and such songs as “Home By The Sea,” “Mama,” “Duchess,” “Carpet Crawlers,” “No Son Of Mine” and “Turn It On Again.”
It will include the band’s iconic 1987 Wembley concert, which was previously released as a DVD only, as well as a 1980 show at London’s Lyceum. A 1978 and a 1992 performance at Knebworth also made the cut, plus a Paris Theater performance from the ’70s.

(NEW YORK) — With the Federal Aviation Administration’s Notice To all Air Missions, or NOTAM, system back up and running, staffing remains high and systems monitoring is at an urgently high level this morning, a senior official told ABC News Thursday.
Computer traffic on the NOTAM system is at super-high levels as airlines, pilots and airports start the day with normal flight operations while also trying to make up for delays and cancellations yesterday. At the same time, public and media computer traffic on the NOTAM system is running high because of global interest in the antiquated system that crashed on Wednesday.
The ground stop order that paused all airplane domestic departures and the FAA systems failures Wednesday morning appear to have been the result of a mistake that occurred during routine scheduled systems maintenance, according to a senior official briefed on the internal review.
An engineer “replaced one file with another,” the official said, not realizing the mistake was being made. As the systems began showing problems and ultimately failed, FAA staff feverishly tried to figure out what had gone wrong. The engineer who made the error did not realize what had happened.
Engineers and IT teams are working to keep the system from crashing again today while they also try to figure out if there are any similar systems that could fail without redundancies.
The official equated this morning’s situation in the FAA networks to the unprecedented strain that was placed on residential internet systems in the first days of the COVID shutdowns in 2019. The systems were just not built for that level of sustained traffic, the official said.
Canada’s NOTAM system was also disrupted Wednesday. FAA teams in contact with the Canadians do not know what happened to the Canadian NOTAM system Wednesday or whether it was connected to the U.S. chaos, the official who spoke with ABC News said. Canada did not have to initiate a ground stop and its system had backups and returned to normal function much more quickly than the U.S. operation. Canada also has a more modern system, the official said, and a fraction of U.S. air traffic.

(GENEVA) — The World Health Organization said Wednesday China is “heavily underreporting” the number of COVID-19 deaths as a wave of infections sweeps the country.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has not posted a daily briefing on COVID-19 to its website since Jan. 8 and has reported just 37 deaths since the “zero COVID” policy was lifted on Dec. 7 for a total of 5,272 deaths since the pandemic began.
According to data from Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, China has seen nearly 18,000 deaths since the pandemic started.
“WHO still believes that deaths are heavily underreported from China, and this is in relation to the definitions that are used but also to the need for doctors and those reporting in the public health system to be encouraged to report these cases and not discouraged,” Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO Health Emergencies Program said during a press conference in Geneva.
Ryan praised many of China’s measures to reduce the burden of disease including administering antivirals early in the course of infection and expanding designated beds in intensive care units but called for more reporting.
“We are working ever closer with our colleagues in China to try and understand better the transmission dynamics, but we still do not have adequate information to make a full comprehensive risk assessment,” he said.
Throughout most of the pandemic, China implemented very strict measures, including widespread lockdowns, quarantines in government buildings and mass testing in an attempt to prevent outbreaks.
However, after large outcries and growing public resentment over the disruption to daily life, Beijing eased the restrictions and reopened its borders.
Public health experts have said that under-vaccination and large swaths of unprotected vulnerable populations in China will lead to hundreds — if not thousands — of deaths.
The WHO has said that it has not detected a variant of concern in China, but cases have skyrocketed.
In response, Japan and South Korea have enacted entry requirements for people traveling from China.
Japan has restricted flights from China to certain Japanese cities but is allowing visitors from China provided they show proof of a negative COVID-19 test. Meanwhile, South Korea is also requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test and stopped issuing short-term visas at its consulates in China through January.
In retaliation, China stopped issuing new short-term visas to both countries and said the rule will remain in place until the “discriminatory” entry restrictions are lifted.

(WASHINGTON) — After flatly rejecting calls to step down, embattled Republican Rep. George Santos told reporters on Thursday, “If 142 people ask for me to resign, I’ll resign.”
He later told ABC News that he meant “142,000 voters who voted for me” would have to ask for him to resign, although according to the New York Board of Elections he received a total of 145,824 votes.
Santos claimed “the elevator cut” him off causing the misstatement, but video shows he was able to finish his sentence before the elevator doors closed.
Santos followed up by saying he basically meant he would not resign.
The freshman congressman addressed the matter further during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast hosted by fellow GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz. It was the first time Santos, who has avoided questions from reporters all week, sat down for a media interview as calls for him to resign intensify.
“It’s their prerogative,” Santos told Gaetz. “I came here to serve the people not politicians and party leaders, and I’m going to do just that.”
“I wish well all of their opinions, but I was elected by 142,000 people. Until those same 142,000 people tell me they don’t want me — we’ll find out in two years,” he added.
A coalition of New York Republicans held a press conference on Wednesday criticizing his campaign as deceitful and calling him a “disgrace” to the House of Representatives. But on Capitol Hill, Santos told ABC News Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott he had no plans to leave his role.
House Democratic Caucus leader Hakeem Jeffries, in his first weekly press conference Thursday, said Santos is “unfit to serve” and the responsibility falls on House Republicans to take action against Santos.
“Clean up your House and you can start with George Santos,” Jeffries said.
But McCarthy on Wednesday declined to join calls for Santos to resign, and said he’ll be placed on some committees — though he won’t be given any top assignments.
“Is there a charge against him? You know, in America today, you’re innocent until proven guilty,” McCarthy said when asked if he would take any action against Santos.
McCarthy on Thursday reiterated that Santos is now part of the Republican conference and if it’s determined he’s done anything wrong, he will be “held accountable.”
“Well, what I find is the voters have elected George Santos,” McCarthy said. “If there is a concern, it will go through ethics. If there is something that is found, he will be dealt with in that manner, but they have a voice in this process.”
Several investigations have been launched into his conduct and an official complaint from two New York Democrats to the House Ethics Committee. Santos has maintained he’s done nothing unethical.
Santos was elected in November to serve New York’s 3rd Congressional District, defeating Democrat Robert Zimmermann by roughly 20,000 votes.
But in the weeks before he was due to be sworn in, it was discovered that parts of his background were fabricated during the campaign.
ABC News found he lied about attending the prestigious Horace Mann school in New York City and Baruch College. He also claimed he worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, but the two companies said they have no record he was ever an employee. Santos has admitted to falsifying parts of his resume.
Speaking on “War Room” on Thursday, Gaetz suggested on multiple times that other lawmakers elected to Congress have embellished their resumes.
Gaetz also pressed Santos on the origin of the $700,000 that Santos gave his campaign, who declined to say exactly where it came from.
“I’ll tell you where it didn’t come from — it didn’t come from China, Ukraine or Burisma,” Santos said.
When asked about the work he did that was the origin of the resources he spent on his campaign, Santos responded: “It’s the equity of my hardworking self.”
“I’ve worked my entire life. I’ve lived an honest life,” he said.
Guitarist Jeff Beck continues to be remembered on social media, with artists like Rod Stewart, ZZ Top’s Billy F.Gibbons and more paying tribute to the rock legend, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 78.
“Jeff Beck was on another planet. He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since,” Stewart shared alongside a picture of him and Beck together. “He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man . Thank you for everything.”
Former Yardbirds member Paul Samwell-Smith shared his tribute via the Cat Stevens/YusufTwitter account, offering, “What a genius. We wrote Shapes of Things together and Jeff had a blank 16 bars for a solo. He not only played an extraordinary solo, but changed the nature of guitar playing ever after.” #JeffBeck.”
And ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons shared, “I met Jeff Beck when I was 17 and I was glad to know a guy like that, a guy who was able to show me how this guitar playing thing should be approached and that’s still very much the case. Jeff’s was a wondrous soul and we already miss him terribly but take comfort in the fact that he’ll be with us forever. Hi Ho Silver Lining!”

Call it boy meets fiancée. Boy Meet’s World‘s Ben Savage has gotten engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Tessa Angermeier.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, the actor, 42, shared a photo of the couple posing together in front of a lake with Angermeier’s left hand on display with a ring on that finger.
“The best is yet to come,” Savage captioned the snapshot.
Although there was no explicit mention of a proposal, many flooded to the comments to celebrate the twosome.
Danica McKeller, who starred in The Wonder Years with Savage’s brother, Fred, wrote, “Congratulations!!” followed by several heart-eye emojis. Meanwhile, Arielle Kebbel left a trio of red heart emojis under the post.
After a 50-year battle, John Fogerty has regained control of the worldwide publishing rights to his music with Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Unlike artists who have sold their catalogs in recent years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been able to purchase, for an undisclosed sum, a majority interest in his rights to CCR songs, which encompass more than 65 songs, including classics like “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Bad Moon Rising” and more.
Fogerty initially gave up his royalties on the CCR songs to Saul Zaentz’s Fantasy Records in 1980 in order to get out of his deal with the label. In 2004, when Concord purchased Fantasy Records, they reinstated and increased Fogerty’s royalties, which he hadn’t previously been receiving.
Concord still owns the CCR master recordings and will continue to look after Fogerty’s publishing interests, at least for a limited time.
“I’m really kind of still in shock,” 77-year-old Fogerty tellsBillboard. “I’m the dad [of these songs]. I created them. They never should have been taken away in the first place.”
He adds, “The happiest way to look at it is, yeah, it isn’t everything. It’s not a 100% win for me, but it’s sure better than it was.”
