The stars of ‘Emily’ on the unlikely romance, hope of Brontë’s story

Not much is known about the life of Wuthering Heights author Emily Brontë, but the new romantic drama Emily, out now in select theaters, aims to imagine the life she might have led.

Sex Education‘s Emma Mackey stars as the titular writer, and she tells ABC Audio the film’s central romance, while unlikely, was rooted in curiosity.

“From the offset there’s a mutual fascination,” Mackey says. “There’s an unwanted fascination between the two of them.”

Oliver Jackson-Cohen plays clergyman William Weightman, the other half of the romantic duo. He says curiosity isn’t the only thing that connects the pair.

“What seems to bind them together is this element of creativity. The fact that Weightman is suppressing, to a certain extent, his creativity for what he believes is right,” Cohen said. “Here’s Emily’s creativity kind of coming out of her … I think there’s something incredibly romantic about that.”

Writer/director Frances O’Connor says it was important for Brontë to fall for someone much her opposite, that the challenge of it allowed her to remain true to herself.

“I think it’s really helpful for Emily to fall in love with what really is the patriarchy. Someone who ultimately is never going to accept who she is,” O’Connor says. “Those parts of us that are authentic and different, a lot of the time the patriarchy doesn’t accept it. So, what do you do and how do you still maintain your voice through that?”

While the film explores grief and confinement, Mackey believes it is ultimately a story about hope.

“I think it’s a very sad film. I always feel very heartbroken after … But it is a hopeful film,” Mackey says. “All of the characters show in some way that they’re trying to fight for something and they’re trying to find their voice.”

Paramore‘s new album This Is Why has debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200.

The sixth studio effort from Hayley Williams and company — and their first in six years — moved a total of 64,000 equivalent album units in its first week, 47,000 of which were traditional album sales.

This Is Why is the highest charting Paramore album since their 2013 self-titled album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Billboard also reports that This Is Why is the highest charting alternative album since Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ record Unlimited Love bowed at #1 in 2022.

Along with the Billboard 200, This Is Why brought Paramore to the top of another chart with its title track, which earned the group their first #1 on the Alternative Airplay ranking.

Paramore will launch a U.S. headlining tour in support of This Is Why in May. They’re also opening two dates on Taylor Swift‘s tour in March.

Roger Waters defends David Gilmour’s solos after alleged “grubby” misquote

Roger Waters and David Gilmour are currently feuding, but Waters took to social media to declare that he has nothing but admiration for his former bandmate’s ability to play guitar.

Waters took issue with a piece that journalist Stuart Maconie wrote for the British publication New Statesman. In it, he referred to an article in the Spanish paper El Pais that quoted Waters as saying he was planning to remove Gilmour’s “horrible guitar solos” from his new version of The Dark Side of the Moon.

In a Twitter posting, Waters said he had to “set the record straight” about something in Maconie’s story. Referring to the “horrible guitar solos” quote, Waters wrote, “I don’t know who he thinks he’s quoting when he says Gilmour’s ‘horrible guitar solos’ but it sure as s**t ain’t me.”

He continued, “I was there, I love Dave’s guitar solos on DSOTM, both of them, and on [Wish You Were Here] and on ANIMALS and on THE WALL and on THE FINAL CUT…Dave’s solos on those albums constitute a collection of some of the very best guitar solos in the history of Rock and Roll.”

He then addressed Maconie, writing, “Please check your copy with the subjects of your grubby little piece, before you go to print.” The current version of Maconie’s article now notes that the El Pais quote has been removed.

Of course, there still hasn’t been any resolution between Waters and Gilmour regarding their most recent war of words. Earlier this month, Gilmour’s partner, Polly Samsontweeted a slew of insults at Waters, to which Gilmour added, “Every word demonstrably true.”

Waters threatened legal action and, then speaking to The Telegraph , claimed Gilmour and late Pink Floyd member Rick Wright “can’t write songs…They have no ideas, not a single one between them.”

Lea Thompson was reunited with her Back to the Future co-stars Michael J. FoxChristopher Lloyd and Tom Wilson over the weekend at a pop culture convention, posting a selfie that gave fans all the feels.

The quartet from the movie trilogy, which started with the 1985 original, was shown smiling at the camera during Fan Expo Portland, and took to their socials to mark the occasion.

Thompson, who played Fox’s mom, Lorraine Baines-McFly, in the films, noted, “Wow honestly had the best time today with my #bttf family.”

Fox posted a photo of him and Thompson together on a now-vanished Instagram Story, noting, “I love being at these FanExpo events and seeing some of my favorite people like Lea, Tom, Chris and all you #bttf heads. Heavy.”

Wilson, who starred as Biff Tannen in the original and played both the bully’s offspring, Griff, and also his progenitor, Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen in the course of the time-spanning trilogy, also shared the selfie, captioning, “Okay, so this happened. 2023.”

In one of actress-director Thompson’s videos, she warmly embraced Lloyd, who played Dr. Emmett Brown, and in another hugged Wilson, calling him, “my favorite, favorite guy,” to which he answered, “I love this lady.” She then playfully asked him, “I’m a butthead, right?” aping one of Biff’s famous put-downs. Wilson responded, “I’ve never done this to you, I don’t bring this out …for anybody,” and pretended to knock on her head, and quoted his character, saying, “Hello, anybody home? Think, Lea!”

Fox and Lloyd recently reunited at New York Comic Con in October 2022.

While adding the taste of dirty, sweaty feet to your adult beverage doesn’t seem like a good idea, drinking out of one’s shoe — or “doing a shoey” — is apparently a beloved tradition in Australia. So who was Harry Styles to argue?

In fan-shot video of his concert in Perth, Monday night, Harry is seen asking if anyone has a drink they can lend him in order to try his hand at the activity. “Can we do a shoey with water or is that against the rules? No?” he asks.

After pouring water into his sneaker, Harry announces, “This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever witnessed,” before shotgunning it into his mouth as the crowd cheers.

Harry’s in the middle of the Down Under leg of his Love on Tour trek, which takes him to Melbourne later this week.  After wrapping up his run of shows in Australia, he’ll head to New Zealand, then to Asia and on to Europe.

Earlier this month, Harry’s album Harry’s House was named Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

“GMA” co-anchor Robin Roberts celebrates 10th anniversary of return after bone marrow transplant

“GMA” co-anchor Robin Roberts celebrates 10th anniversary of return after bone marrow transplant
ABC News

(NEW YORK) — ABC News’ Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts said she is “beaming in gratitude” as she marks the 10th anniversary of her return to GMA after undergoing a lifesaving bone marrow transplant.

On Feb. 20, 2013, Roberts returned to the GMA set after spending nearly six months off the air while undergoing treatment.

“I have been waiting 174 days to say this, ‘Good morning, America,'” Roberts said in her first on-camera remarks upon her return.

Nearly one year prior, in June 2012, Roberts announced to GMA viewers that she had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a condition that occurs when blood cells don’t form and don’t work properly, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Roberts, who years earlier had beat breast cancer, would go on to endure months of treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

On Sept. 20, 2013, Roberts underwent a lifesaving bone marrow transplant using stem cells from her sister Sally-Ann Roberts, who was her perfect match.

“I was blessed to have the perfect match, the greatest gift from my sister Sally-Ann,” Roberts said Tuesday on GMA. “In those challenging moments to follow, focusing in on the fight and not the fright during my intensive treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering.”

Roberts shared her health journey with GMA viewers, following a lesson she said she learned from her beloved mother, Lucimarian Roberts, to “make my mess my message.”

Her hope, she said, in sharing her own story was to “help others through their own journey.”

That hope continued for Roberts when she returned to the GMA anchor desk on Feb. 20, 2013.

“Those 174 days there was a lot of challenges. There was a lot of fear,” Roberts said. “I was really grateful to be able to once again say, ‘Good morning, America,’ and also grateful and hopeful that by being back, I could somehow be a symbol to others going through something that this too shall pass.”

In the decade since her return to GMA, Roberts has continued to “make her mess her message” by raising awareness about the need for bone marrow donation.

While Roberts’ sister was luckily her perfect match, about 70% of patients on bone marrow registry lists do not have a family match and rely on anonymous donors for a cure, according to the Be The Match registry, a nonprofit organization operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, which manages the world’s largest bone marrow donor registry.

Even then, a patient’s chance of having a matched, available donor on the Be The Match registry ranges from 29% to 79%, depending on the patient’s ethnic background.

Over the past decade, Roberts and GMA have continued to report extensively about blood stem cell transplants, which can cure or treat more than 75 different diseases, such as leukemias and lymphomas, and spread awareness of the importance of the Be The Match registry.

Now more than ever the need is urgent as over 12,000 people are diagnosed each year with conditions that require a blood stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor, according to Be The Match.

Be The Match reports regional and national recruitment efforts decreased 36% during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, and that only 50% of people on the registry will go on to make a donation when they’re a match for a patient in need.

Be The Match has put a call out in particular for younger donors under the age of 40, as research has shown younger donors help improve overall outcomes for patients, according to the Mayo Clinic.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Roberts’ return to GMA, the show partnered with Be The Match to host bone marrow registry drives across the country.

The effort focused particularly on college campuses in order to reach donors under the age of 40.

“Still a decade later, our hope is to inspire others to help others be a match,” Roberts said Tuesday, adding that she is “filled with gratitude” for the “love, support and prayers” she has received over the years.
