Man serving 400-year prison sentence exonerated after new probe finds wrongful conviction

(FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.) — A man who has served more than 34 years of a 400-year prison sentence has been released after the state of Florida reinvestigated the case and determined he did not commit armed robbery.

“I can’t put it into words,” said Sidney Holmes, now 57, in an interview with ABC affiliate WPLG after he was exonerated and freed on Monday. “It’s overwhelming.”

According to Broward County State Attorney Harold F. Pryor, a thorough reinvestigation of the 1988 armed robbery case that led to Holmes’ conviction “raised reasonable doubts about his guilt.”

“With the Christian faith I have, I can’t have hate,” Holmes said. “Just have to keep moving.”

Holmes was arrested in October 1988 for allegedly being the driver for two unidentified men who robbed a man and woman at gunpoint outside a store, according to Pryor. The two unidentified men stole the male victim’s car.

Holmes was convicted in a jury trial in April 1989, and sentenced to 400 years in prison.

In 2020, Holmes contacted the State Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU) claiming he was “factually innocent” of the armed robbery of two people outside a convenience store, Pryor said in a statement.

The CRU found that there is “no evidence” connecting Holmes to the robbery besides a flawed identification of him and the vehicle involved in the robbery. The CRU found that witness identification of Holmes was likely a “misidentification,” partly due to the photo and live lineup practices commonly used by law enforcement at the time, which are “scientifically unreliable,” according to the state attorney’s office.

The state attorney’s office also found that Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies who did the original investigations “expressed shock” that Holmes was sentenced to 400 years and had served more than three decades.

“We have one rule here at the Broward State Attorney’s Office – do the right thing, always,” Pryor said in a statement. “As prosecutors, our only agenda is to promote public safety in our community and to ensure that justice is served. I commend the victims, witnesses and law enforcement officers for their candor and assistance in reinvestigating a crime that occurred more than 34 years ago.”

Pauly Shore shouts out Oscar-winning ‘Encino Man’ co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser

(NOTE LANGUAGE) Sure, he was the butt of an Oscars night joke from Jimmy Kimmel, but Pauly Shore is taking it all in stride, for the sake of giving flowers to newly minted Academy Award winners Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser.

The pair appeared alongside Shore in 1992’s hit comedy Encino Man, which Kimmel poked fun at during his monologue. “Two actors from Encino Man are nominated for Oscars. What an incredible night this must be for the two of you, and what a difficult night this must be for Pauly Shore,” Jimmy joked.

For his part, Shore posted a video of the bit Monday, noting, “If you haven’t checked it out, watch this clip. Very funny — I really loved it.”

Shore added, “But what I REALLY loved is that my old buddies from back in the day, Brendan Fraser and @KeHuyQuan, took home the Oscars. What a story. I mean really guys, what a f*****’ story.”

Pauly added, “If we can all learn something from this, never quit on your dreams. Keep dreaming, work hard, and put in the time, and if your stars line up and you’re in the entertainment business, one day Hollywood will hit you in the head with the pixie dust like it did for Brendan and Ke.”

However, Shore also told Page Six on Monday, “We love to hate people when they’re on top. People wanted to smash me down and they did. I was always nice to everyone, always cool, I put my heart into my all my films.”

He added, “Human beings have feelings, it’s not like selling real estate.”

Biden lets it slip that Jimmy Carter wants him to deliver Carter’s eulogy

(WASHINGTON) — President Joe Biden let it slip on Monday evening that former President Jimmy Carter has asked Biden to deliver his eulogy, according to pool reporters present at the closed-door event.

At a private reception for the Democratic National Committee in Rancho Santa Fe, California, Biden revealed Carter’s request seemingly off the cuff when talking about a “recent” visit with him.

“He asked me to do his eulogy — excuse me I shouldn’t say that,” Biden said, according to the pool. “I spent time with Jimmy Carter and it’s finally caught up with him. But they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough.”

Carter, who at 98 is both the oldest living and longest-lived U.S. president, has been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. The Carter Center announced last month the former president had elected to spend his remaining time at home with family after several extended hospital stays.

Biden’s relationship with Carter stretches back decades, as he was reportedly the first elected official outside of Georgia to endorse Carter’s run for president in 1976, when Biden was a first-term senator from Delaware.

The two previously saw each other in May 2021, a few months after Biden entered the White House, when he and first lady Jill Biden traveled to Plains.

Carter, who held office from 1977 to 1981 as the 39th president and went on to become a Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian, has seen serious health challenges in recent years. In 2019, he suffered from various falls and underwent hip surgery. He has also survived metastatic melanoma.

Back in 2007, Carter eulogized former President Gerald Ford, the Republican he defeated in 1976 to win the presidency.

Lana Del Rey shares new ‘Ocean Blvd’ song, “The Grants”

Lana Del Rey has premiered a new song called “The Grants,” a track off her upcoming album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.

The song’s title refers to Del Rey’s birth name, Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. You can listen to it now via digital outlets.

“The Grants” is the third Ocean Blvd cut to be released, following “A&W” and the title track. The album will arrive in full on March 24.

Ocean Blvd is the follow-up to Del Rey’s two 2021 albums, Chemtrails over the Country Club and Blue Banisters.

Axl Rose performs “Welcome to the Jungle” with Carrie Underwood at Los Angeles show

Axl Rose and Carrie Underwood continue to solidify their musical friendship, with Axl once again turning up to join Underwood to perform the Guns N’ Roses classic “Welcome to the Jungle.”

The collaboration went down Monday night as Carrie brought her Denim & Rhinestones tour to Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, marking the third time they’ve performed together onstage.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world,” Carrie shared on Instagram. “Thanks, Axl, for showing up, once again, to make the great times even better! It’ll forever feel like it was all a dream, but these dreams are my favorite ones!”

Axl and Carrie first performed together last year at Underwood’s Stagecoach Festival appearance in Indio, California. She then returned the favor, turning up at GNR’s 2022 show at Tottenham Hotspur Arena in London, England.

Morgan Evans announces new song, “On My Own Again”

Morgan Evans is slated to release a new song, “On My Own Again,” on Friday, March 17.

Composed by Morgan with Zach Kale, Geoff Warburton and producer Chris DeStefano, the track is the follow-up to his 2022 viral single, “Over For You.”

Though not much is known about the song yet, a press release from Morgan’s label home, Warner Music Nashville, teased a lyric: “If forever’s gonna end like that, I guess I’d better start the rest of my life like the best time’s up around the bend. Oh, on my own again…”

It seems safe to say that this release will be another deeply personal one for the Australia-born country singer.

Video for “Ma Boy” off ‘Creed III’ soundtrack released

Dreamville/Interscope Records have released the video for “Ma Boy,” the lead single off the Creed IIIsoundtrack. The visual finds J.I.D and Lute performing their respective verses in a boxing gym intermixed with scenes from the recently released movie.

The song is one of 17 tracks featured on the soundtrack to Creed III, which was executive produced by Dreamville, Proximity Media, Michael B. Jordan‘s Outlier Society and executive music producer Frank Brim. The album also sees appearances from Big Sean, Kehlani, Tierra Whack, SiR, Dreamville stars Ari Lennox, Bas, Cozz, Omen and more.

Creed III and its accompanying soundtrack are out now.

Report: Mick Mars “was not happy” with Mötley Crüe’s use of “tape” on tour

Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars announced his retirement from touring back in October, citing his ongoing battle with the inflammatory disease ankylosing spondylitis, or AS. But it sounds like there may have been more to his decision.

In a new interview with Ultimate Guitar, drummer Carmine Appice, who’s worked with Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, King Kobra and more, claims that Mars “was not happy” while out on Mötley’s Stadium Tour with Def Leppard.

“Basically, everything was on tape; it was all planned out and ultimately a lot of crap,” Appice, who’s friends with Mars, explains. “And Mick is a pretty good player, and so, to [not] let him loose and play the way he wants, that was never going to work for him.”

He notes, “The truth is that everything has been weird for a while with Mötley Crue,” adding that Mick was “pissed off” that everything was on tape, with Appice saying it was obvious.

The drummer also says Mick wasn’t getting along with his bandmates and he “would travel alone on a bus while the other guys flew everywhere. They were all busy still trying to be rock stars, and Mick just wanted to play the music,” he says. “Their lifestyles are different than his, and so there were a lot of disagreements. I think he was just done.”

Recent ‘Swarm’ teasers feature preview of new Childish Gambino song

Donald Glover‘s new series Swarm may feature music from his alter ego, Childish Gambino. Teasers of the show preview a snippet of a song titled “Sticky.” It will reportedly be part of an EP that is slated to come out Friday.

“Y’all waitin on visuals, meanwhile we gettin a whole EP,” read a tweet from the Swarm Twitter account. “Original music from the series by Ni’Jah with Kirby featuring Childish Gambino available 3/17.”

For the uninitiated, Ni’Jah is the Beyoncé-like character in Swarm, which showcases the dark side of fandom. Created by Glover and Janine Nabers, the series stars Dominique Fishback, Chlöe and Damson Idris.

“We just thought it’d be fun to make a post-truth Piano Teacher mixed with The King of Comedy,” Donald told Vanity Fair in January. “Me and my brother Stephen were talking about finding someone like Isabelle Huppert, as far as risk-takers in performances.”

“A lot of people did it out of the kindness of their hearts and they did a really great job,” he continued of the show, which included Malia Obama on the writing team. “Dom, Damson, Chlöe. I was really blown away at how hard they worked on the tone, ’cause it’s a strange one.”

Swarm premieres March 17 on Prime Video.
