Melissa Etheridge recalls how her sexuality was censored early in her career

Melissa Etheridge is looking back at her start in the music industry and how she was asked to hide her sexuality.

The singer recalled to SPIN FIRE’s Free Speech + Other Dirty Words that when she was signed by Island Records in the mid-80s, there was a jarring moment that came shortly before she released her self-titled 1988 debut album. She said, “There was a meeting at an office with a conference table where everybody was sitting round, and someone said, ‘So, what are we going to do about the gay thing?'”

Melissa remembered advocating for herself at that meeting and responding with, “I am not going to pretend I am something else and find a guy to take pictures with — I am going to be me.”

“They said, ‘Well, as long as you don’t flag wave.’ This was before we had the rainbow flag,” Melissa added. “Four years later, I was flag waving!”

Melissa publicly came out alongside singer Janis Ian on January 20, 1993, during former President Bill Clinton‘s inaugural celebration.

Melissa also reflected on the difficulty of protecting everyone’s right to free speech, even if it upsets her, noting that. Recalling her disagreement with Eminem over the slurs he used in his 2000 song “Criminal,” she noted that freedom of speech “works both ways.”

“We want the freedom to say what we like even though it offends others; I gotta let him be even though it offends me. Because that’s freedom,” she said. “The American Experiment is about can we all live together inside those differences?”

Melissa also revealed the discomfort she felt when continuing her show on Sirius XM because the platform also hosted conservative firebrand Steve Bannon‘s Breitbart Daily News. She admitted, “Free speech is hard.”

Def Leppard takes fans behind the scenes of their Santiago & Chile concerts

Def Leppard is giving fans another look at their life on the road. The band just shared the third installment in their ‘Behind the World Tour’ diary, this time highlighting stops in Chile and Brazil.

The episode kicks off with the band at a Santiago cemetery for a photo shoot with photographer Ross Halfin, and later features footage of the band at another photoshoot in São Paulo with some of their tourmates in Mötley Crüe.

There’s also lots of footage of the band on and off stage at both gigs, as well them enjoying Mötley’s set. The clip also shows Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott meeting a fan in São Paulo who gives him a small model she made of him based on an old photo taken by Halfin.

Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe are set to resume their World Tour May 22 in Sheffield, England. You can find a complete list of tour dates can be found at defleppard.com.

Dove Cameron teases the next season of ’Schmigadoon!’

Dove Cameron returns to the new season of Schmigadoon! as a new character who is a little more sultry than the affable Betsy.

This time, Dove will trade in the blonde pigtails to star as Jenny Banks, a nightclub performer. Also, while the Apple TV+ series is titled Schmigadoon!, which is the setting of the first season — a play on the classic Broadway musical title Brigadoon — season two is set in “Schmicago,” an obvious play on the musical Chicago.

“It’s an anthology,” Dove told Today of the musical comedy, adding, “So you come back each [season] and it’s a different storyline [and] different characters.”

Dove noted that while season one explored musicals of the 50s and 60s, this new tale honors those that took over Broadway in the 70s.

Dove also revealed, “We shoot all of the [musical] numbers live,” which brought some encouragement to the cast when filming the first season, which took place during the height of the pandemic.

“It felt very much like being a part of live theater in a time where there was no live theater,” she shared.

The new season of Schimigadoon! airs April 5 on Apple TV+.

Meet the Brothers Osborne twins: Arthur & Maybelle have arrived

The Brothers Osborne twins are here! John Osborne and his wife, singer/songwriter Lucie Silvas, welcomed their first children — a boy and a girl — early Tuesday morning.

“Welcome to this crazy world, Arthur and Maybelle,” John posted on Instagram later in the day Tuesday. “It’s going to be a wild one. @luciesilvas – You’re a damn boss.”

Arthur arrived at 1:43 a.m., weighing 3 pounds 13 ounces and measuring 15 1/2 inches long, while Maybelle made her entrance a minute later, checking in at 5 pounds 1 ounce and 18 inches.

“We did it y’all,” John added. “@luciesilvas is a damn warrior princess.” Around the time of the kids’ birth, John posted a photo of himself in a mask and scrubs, saying “It’s go time.”

John and Lucie first revealed their pregnancy last November on the day of the CMA Awards, where Brothers Osborne once again took home the Vocal Duo trophy.

Gwyneth Paltrow appears in Utah courtroom over 2016 skiing accident

Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow found herself in a Utah courtroom Tuesday, in a civil trial stemming from a 2016 skiing accident.

Paltrow is being sued by Dr. Terry Sanderson, who claims Paltrow collided with him on the slopes of the Deer Valley Resort in February of 2016, and then skiied away from the scene.

According to ABC News affiliate WTVX, Sanderson claims Paltrow was “skiing out of control and too fast for her ability” when she allegedly struck him. His attorneys claim he suffered four broken ribs, a brain injury and other injuries in the collision.

Sanderson also claimed resort employees filed a false report claiming he was at fault, and failed to contact medical personnel at the time.

However, Paltrow claimed she was the one who was struck by Sanderson, whom she says apologized and said he was OK. The actress countersued the retired optometrist in 2019.

Her countersuit reads, in part, “Three years after a ski collision, Plaintiff [Sanderson] threw a press conference to assert that Gwyneth Paltrow had struck him…He demanded Ms. Paltrow pay him millions. If she did not pay, she would face negative publicity resulting from his allegations.”

Further, Paltrow’s suit adds, “Plaintiff admits he does not remember what happened. Ms. Paltrow remembers what happened very clearly,” and further states that Paltrow received a “full body blow” from Sanderson from behind while she was skiing “slowly” because her family was below her getting skiing lessons.

Court documents show Sanderson was initially seeking more than $3 million in damages, but that has been amended to $300,000, according to WTVX. Paltrow’s countersuit seeks just $1, plus attorney fees.

The civil trial is expected to last eight days.

Kane Brown hopes to collaborate with Shania Twain

It’s Women’s History Month, and Kane Brown is celebrating it by sharing a bit about a global country superstar who’s impacted his life.

“I feel like I say this every time, but I’m going to have to go with Shania Twain again,” Kane tells the press when asked about the ladies who have influenced him.

“My mom was a huge fan of hers, so I’ve grown up listening to all her music and I actually met her one time and I talked about doing a song with her,” he recalls. “So, it’d be cool if we got to do it. But yeah, she influenced me the most as a female.”

Of course, Kane’s also influenced by the women in his family, particularly his “Thank God” duet partner and wife Katelyn Brown and their daughter, Kingsley.

“Another woman that’s had a huge impact on my life, well there’s two, my wife Katelyn and my beautiful little baby girl, Kingsley,” Kane says.

Kane is currently touring the country with Dustin Lynch, Gabby Barrett and LoCash on his Drunk or Dreaming Tour. His latest album is 2022’s Different Man, which features the number one hits “Thank God,” “Like I Love Country Music” and “One Mississippi,” as well as his next single, “Bury Me in Georgia.”

Madonna reveals she’s working with producer Max Martin

Looks like Madonna is cooking up new music in the studio and she has acclaimed Swedish record producer Max Martin helping her.

The singer revealed on Twitter that she’s working with Martin and shared a snap of the two brainstorming in a music studio. “When in Doubt go to Work,” she captioned the update.

She added, “Nothing shuts Down the Noise or the Naysayers More then being in the Creative Process !!”

Martin has previously worked with superstars like Adele, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga and more. So far, he’s written or co-written 25 songs that went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, including Katy Perry‘s “Roar,” Taylor Swift‘s “Blank Space” and The Weeknd‘s “Blinding Lights.”

So far, it’s unknown what Madonna’s cooking up with Martin but fans are antsy to get their hands on some new, original music from Madge, with some noting it’s been nearly four years since she released her most recent studio effort, Madame X, which dropped in June 2019. She did help tide fans over with her 2022 remix album, Finally Enough Love.

In addition, Madonna’s gearing up for her Celebration Tour, which kicks off July 15 and is slated to wrap December 6 of this year.

Post Malone settles “Circles” lawsuit, the day the trial was scheduled to begin

Post Malone has reportedly settled the authorship dispute over his hit song “Circles,” the very day jury selection in the trial was scheduled to commence.

The suit was brought by Canadian musician Tyler Armes in 2020, who claimed he was owed partial ownership of “Circles” because he contributed a guitar riff and co-wrote the chords and bass line for the hit song.

Billboard reports Post has apparently worked things out with Armes after U.S. District Judge Otis D. Wright announced a settlement had been reached. The announcement came just before jury selection was to begin.

Judge Otis also comically waved goodbye to the press who had packed the courtroom for the proceedings. In addition, court staff were seen clearing out musical equipment that was apparently going to be used for the trial.

Armes was also seen leaving the courthouse.

Leading up to the trial, Post rejected Armes’ claims he was due partial ownership of the song and was present at the August 2018 jam session that created fragments of the hit song.

A representative for Malone previously told Billboard, “It is an age-old story in the music business that when a song earns the type of runaway success that ‘Circles’ has garnered, an individual will come out of the woodwork to falsely claim to take credit for the song, and demand unwarranted and unearned windfall profits from the song.”

“This lawsuit arises from such a story,” the statement noted.

Details about the settlement have not been publicly released, nor has there been any public statement from Post or Armes.

Steve Hackett to play Genesis’ ‘Foxtrot’ on new North American tour

Steve Hackett is ready to celebrate his career with Genesis with a new North American tour. Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot and Fifty + Hackett Highlights Tour will have the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer performing Genesis’ 1972 album Foxtrot in its entirety, plus other songs from Hackett’s catalog.

Hackett shares, “I’m thrilled to be bringing my Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour to the USA and Canada in the autumn, and very much look forward to seeing you all then!”

The tour is set to kick off October 3 in Montreal, Canada. It hits the States October 5 in Ithaca, New York, with shows confirmed through November 18 in Los Angeles, California.

Released in October, 1972, Foxtrot was Genesis’ fourth studio album, and contained such classic songs as “Watcher of the Skies” and the epic 23-minute track “Supper’s Ready.”

In a bit of corporate synergy, HGTV has announced the Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, a new home design reality series timed to the release of Warner Bros. Discovery’s upcoming Barbie movie. The series will see one lucky participant win a real-life version of the dollhouse of their childhood dreams.

Hosted by model, author and mom Ashley Graham, the “four nostalgia-filled episodes” will feature “celebrity guests, pop culture history and a plethora of Barbie surprises” as “eight teams of HGTV superstars…transform a Southern California home into a real-life Barbie Dreamhouse.”

Featured on the show will be a deep bench of HGTV’s home reno experts, including Jasmine Roth from Help! I Wrecked My House; Extreme Makeovers vet-turned Rock the Block‘s Ty Pennington; Windy City Rehab‘s Alison Victoria; Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson from Married to Real Estate; New Kids on the Block star-turned Farmhouse Fixer‘s Jonathan Knight; Christina Hall and James Bender from Christina on the Coast, and more.

The teams will not only renovate the house, they’ll do so in a style that shows Barbie’s evolution over the decades — from a ’70s disco for Ken’s Den, to a 1960s “atomic age kitchen.”
