Biden meets with Trudeau as US, Canada announce immigration agreement

(WASHINGTON) — President Joe Biden and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a new migration deal as part of Biden’s first visit to America’s northern neighbor.

The new agreement will allow Canada to send migrants who cross at unofficial ports of entry at America’s northern border back to the U.S., a change to the Safe Third Country Agreement long-sought by Canada.

The U.S. will also be able to turn back asylum seekers who travel across the border from Canada.

In return, Canada has agreed to allow 15,000 more people from the Western Hemisphere to migrate to Canada legally.

Biden officially announced the new policy agreement as he delivered remarks to the Canadian Parliament, saying he applauded Canada for “stepping up with similar programs opening new legal pathways” to migrants.

“At the same time, the United States and Canada will work together to discourage unlawful border crossing and fully implement the updated Safe Third Country Agreement,” Biden said.

During a joint news conference with Biden, the Canadian prime minister emphasized working with the U.S. to “keep our people safe.”

“Keeping people safe also includes keeping asylum seekers safe, keeping our borders secure and keeping our immigration strong,” Trudeau said. “Both of our countries believe in safe, fair and orderly migration, refugee protection and border security.”

Trudeau said authorities will enforce the agreement beginning at midnight Friday.

The Bidens arrived in Canada on Thursday, and were welcomed by Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau at their residence in Ottawa.

The U.S.-Canada relationship was strained during the previous administration as Trudeau and former President Donald Trump clashed on a number of issues, including trade and immigration. But the alliance has since mended under Biden.

Trudeau touched on the “challenging times” the two nations faced, noting the last time Biden appeared in the room for a joint press conference he was the outgoing vice president.

“I have to say through our conversations back then, through the work we have been able to do over these past two years, it has truly been an honor to be able to work with you for the benefit of Canadians and Americans, but also to continue to have a positive impact on the world in a very uncertain time,” Trudeau said.

Biden, too, praised the U.S.-Canada alliance, saying the two countries will “always will have each other’s backs.”

Biden began the day on Parliament Hill for an official welcome and meetings with Trudeau, Canada’s Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and others.

In the evening, Biden and first lady Jill Biden will attend a gala dinner hosted by the Trudeaus at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa before departing for Wilmington, Delaware.

Gwyneth Paltrow testifies in ski crash trial

Gwyneth Paltrow has taken the stand in the civil trial for a ski accident that occurred on February 26, 2016.

Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist, filed a lawsuit in January 2019 accusing Paltrow of crashing into him on the slopes at Deer Valley Ski Resort in Utah, claiming he was left “seriously injured” as a result.

Sanderson’s original complaint claims that Paltrow allegedly “skied out of control and hit the back of Terry Sanderson, another skier, who was downhill, knocking him down hard, knocking him out, and causing a brain injury, four broken ribs and other serious injuries.”

In an amended complaint filed in February 2019, Sanderson changed the value of damages he is seeking in the lawsuit from $3.1 million to $300,000.

Paltrow filed a countersuit in which she claimed it was Sanderson who crashed into her, delivering a “full ‘body blow'” when he “plowed into her back.”

The award-winning actress called Sanderson’s lawsuit an “attempt to exploit her celebrity and wealth.”

Paltrow said her injuries were “relatively minor” and that she is only seeking “symbolic damages” of $1 plus costs for lawyers fees from Sanderson for defending herself against “this meritless claim.”

So far in the trial, the jury has heard opening remarks from both Paltrow’s and Sanderson’s attorneys, as well as testimony from a slew of doctors and a person Sanderson’s defense claims is the sole witness of the crash.

Sanderson’s ex-girlfriend and two of his daughters have also taken the stand, as did the brother of Sanderson’s son-in-law.

Paltrow’s attorney said the Goop CEO’s husband, Brad Falchuk, who was her boyfriend at the time of the accident, and her two children, daughter Apple and son Moses, will take the stand in the trial.

Alanis Morissette will headline the 2023 RBCxMusic Concert Series on June 10 in Toronto. She will be the closing act of the festival and said in a statement, “It’s always a great feeling to perform back home in Canada.”

Lewis Capaldi is out promoting his new album, Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent, due May 19. He shared a clip of his press tour to TikTok, where he jokingly tells fans not to buy the album and to buy Ed Sheeran‘s instead: “It’s a complete and utter joke that I’ve been allowed to make a second one.”

Speaking of Ed, he opened himself up to a Q&A on Instagram and was asked by a fan if he’ll check out Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour. “I’d love to see it. It looks like the greatest show on planet earth,” he confirmed. “It’s incredible what she’s doing!” No word yet on which show he might possibly crash.

Adele might be pioneering a new kind of audio experience for concerts. Billboard reports she’s using a 3D soundscape system, L-Acoustics, which allows for “hyper real sound” that can be heard practically anywhere, no matter where she’s standing — and, more importantly, allows her voice to move with her. Unfortunately, it costs more money to use such a system, but fans are apparently loving it, so more artists might use it in the future.

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ already killing it at the box office

Fans are apparently ready for John Wick to be back. The fourth chapter of the hit franchise has already broken a series record, and it only officially hit theaters on Friday.

Variety reports John Wick: Chapter 4 snagged some $8.9 million in sneak preview ticket sales in this country on Thursday alone.

By comparison, the last film in the series, Chapter 3: Parabellum, earned $5.9 million in its domestic sneaks, John Wick 2 earned $2.2 million and the original made $950,000 during its Thursday night screenings, according to the trade.

The latest installment’s huge sneaks have put Keanu Reeves‘ latest adventure as Baba Yaga on track for not only a record opening for the series, but an impressive weekend open overall, with an expected take of up to $70 million.

Stephen Stills shares performance of “49 Bye-Byes” and “For What it’s Worth” from upcoming live album

Stephen Stills is giving fans a taste of his upcoming live album, Stephen Stills Live at Berkeley 1971, dropping April 28. The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has shared a piano medley of the Crosby, Stills & Nash tune “49 Bye-Byes” and the Buffalo Springfield classic “For What It’s Worth.”

As previously reported, Stills Live at Berkeley 1971 was recorded during Stills’ first solo tour. It features 14 previously unreleased live performances, recorded August 20 and 21, 1971, at Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley, California, including two songs with Stills’ CSN bandmate David Crosby.

Stephen Stills Live at Berkeley 1971 is available for preorder in a variety of formats, including two-LP, CD, digital and a deluxe package that contains photos by famed photographer Henry Diltz, a numbered limited-edition self-portrait, framed lithograph and more.

Adam McKay arrests Robert Downey Jr., Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams and more for serial killer satire

Director-writer Adam McKay, who recently called the shots on Netflix’s environmental disaster movie Don’t Look Up, starring Oscar winners Leo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, has lined up some major stars for his next big comedy.

Deadline reports Oscar-nominated screenwriter McKay has netted Robert Downey Jr., The Batman‘s Robert Pattinson, Till‘s Danielle Deadwyler, and Oscar winners Amy Adams and Forest Whitaker for a dark comedy centering on a serial killer.

The trade reports Average Height, Average Build will have Pattinson playing a killer who turns to a Washington DC lobbyist, played by Adams, in an effort to help change the laws so that he could literally get away with murder.

Deadline says Downey will play a retired cop who still wants to bring the killer to justice. The film will reportedly start production later this year, bound for either theaters or streaming.

Noel Gallagher’s new High Flying Birds track earns backhanded compliment from Liam Gallagher

Noel Gallagher‘s latest High Flying Birds track earned a compliment from his estranged brother and former Oasis bandmate, Liam Gallagher, albeit a backhanded one.

After the song, which is called “Dead to the World,” premiered Thursday, Liam tweeted, “How can such a mean spirited little man write such a beautiful song.”

Liam’s tweet follows his latest comments on the ongoing Gallagher brother saga, in which he said that “the little fella aka potato” — his preferred nickname for Noel — “has done a lot of damage to Oasis as a band/brand.”

Prior to that, Noel gave an interview with France Inter in which he basically dared Liam to “get his people to call my people.”

“But you know what? He won’t call,” Noel said.

“Dead to the World,” meanwhile, will appear on the upcoming High Flying Birds album Council Skies, due out June 2. That same day, Noel and company will kick off a U.S. tour with Garbage and Metric.

Sam Asghari open to starring in a movie with Britney Spears: “That would be a dream come true”

Sam Asghari says starring in a movie alongside wife Britney Spears “would be a dream come true.”

The actor, who stars in the upcoming series Lioness, chatted with TMZ about his acting ambitions and whether or not they’d include his wife.

“I think she’s a great actress,” he said, adding, “I hope one day. That would be a dream come true.”

TMZ asked what kind of project he can see himself doing with Britney and if it comes down to it being the right script. “Maybe [I’d] write the script,” he responded.

Sam doesn’t think he’d want to do a rom-com with the pop star, adding, “Maybe it’s an action film, because she’s very athletic. She’s able to jump up and … do a bunch of stunts. I think she’d be really good at that.”

He also thinks Britney would do her own stunts.

The hitmaker previously starred in the movie Crossroads, and made memorable cameos in the shows like How I Met Your Mother and Glee.

Don Toliver to perform at McDonald’s All-American Games halftime show

The McDonald’s All-American Games return next week, showcasing some of the best high school basketball players in the class of 2023. Taking place March 28 at Houston’s Toyota Center, the boys game will feature a halftime performance by Don Toliver.

“I’m ready to do my thing at the McDonald’s All-American Games halftime show,” he said in a statement, per Uproxx. “I have a lot of respect for how hard the players have worked to be at the top of their game, and it’s an honor to take center stage in my hometown where it all began for me.”

The Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul Marching Band will perform during the halftime show at the girls game.
