Sammy Hagar & Bob Weir confirm eighth annual Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit concert

Sammy Hagar and Bob Weir are once again teaming up for a good cause. The two artists have announced their eighth annual Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit concert, which raises money for the Pediatric Cancer Program at the University of California San Francisco’s Benioff Children’s Hospital.

The benefit, the first in three years, will take place May 13 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, with a lineup that features former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, Heart‘s Nancy Wilson, Chris Isaak, Don Was and more, plus yet-to-be-announced special guests.

“I’m thrilled that we’re back for an eighth year and back home at the Fillmore in San Francisco where it all began,” Hagar shares. “Most of all I’m so grateful to my friends and partners who lend their unconditional support year after year,” noting the artists “donate their time and deliver unbelievable performances so all of the profits can go directly to an incredible cause.” He adds, “That’s my kind of philanthropy!”

Tickets for the concert go on sale Friday, April 14, at 10 a.m. PT.

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose back as 2023 Tonys host

Academy Award winner and Tony nominee Ariana DeBose will reprise her role as host of the Tony Awards.

The 76th annual event will be live from the United Palace in New York City on Sunday, June 11. It will air on CBS, and stream both live and on-demand on Paramount+.

In the announcement, the West Side Story veteran noted, “I was honored to serve as host last year and even more so to be asked back! So looking forward to celebrating this incredible season and the people who make the work happen.”

Referencing the Washington Heights location of the venue, she enthused, “Here’s to adding some uptown flavor to the magic of the Tony Awards!”

Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, and Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, called DuBose “a force both on and off the stage,” adding, “We are thrilled to welcome back one of Broadway’s brightest lights to dazzle, inspire and illuminate this year’s Tony Awards!”

Referencing DeBose’s infamous BAFTA-night rap, the show’s executive producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner said, “Ariana will host and dance and sing, we’re so thrilled she’s back to do the thing.”

Mötley Crüe manager accuses Mick Mars’ reps of “taking advantage of him”: “It’s called elder abuse”

There’s more drama in the land of Mötley Crüe.

As previously reported, guitarist Mick Mars sued the “Kickstart My Heart” outfit last week, alleging that the band decreased his share of tour profits from 25% to 5% after he announced he was retiring from the road last October. He also claimed that the other three members — Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Vince Neil — played along to prerecorded tracks during last summer’s Stadium Tour and that Sixx in particular “did not play a single note on bass” live.

“I carried these bastards for years,” Mars told Variety in a subsequent interview.

Now, Mötley manager Allen Kovac is firing back, specifically at those representing the 71-year-old Mars, who cited his ongoing battle with the inflammatory disease ankylosing spondylitis in his retirement announcement.

“What’s upsetting to me is not Mick, but his representatives, who have guided Mick to say and do harmful things to the brand he cares about so much,” Kovac tells Variety.

“He has a degenerative disease and people are taking advantage of him,” the manager continues. “It’s called elder abuse.”

Kovac also contends that Sixx “played his bass and always has,” but Mars “would play the wrong songs and the wrong parts” during the tour. Mars has called such criticism of his guitar playing gaslighting.

At the heart of the suit, though, is the financial disagreement. Mars maintains that his retirement from touring does not mean he’s retiring from the band, and thus feels his share should not be affected.

“Resigning from touring — or even from the band entirely — is not resigning from the band’s corporations and LLCs,” says Mars’ lawyer, Edwin F. McPherson. “Corporate law doesn’t work that way.”

However, the Mötley team disagrees.

“[Without touring], there’s nothing left,” Kovac says. “What is left?”

Carly Pearce returned to the Grand Ole Opry stage on April 11 for her 100th performance.

During the special night, the Opry member treated fans to a performance of her latest number one hit, “What He Didn’t Do,” as well as duets with Ashley McBryde (“Never Wanted To Be That Girl”), The Isaacs (“Easy Going”) and Charles Kelley (“I Hope You’re Happy Now”). Fellow Kentucky native Ricky Skaggs also joined Carly to cover the classic Bill Monroe song “Blue Moon of Kentucky.”

Additionally, while backstage, Carly received two plaques: one to commemorate the RIAA certification of her latest Platinum hit, “What He Didn’t Do,” and another for the RIAA-certified three-times Platinum single, “I Hope You’re Happy Now.”

Carly’s performance will air on Opry Live on Circle Network Saturday, April 22, at 8 p.m. CT.

Jada Pinkett Smith‘s documentary series African Queens is returning to Netflix, with a second-season focus on Queen Cleopatra.

The series will feature four episodes about the “daring queen whose beauty and romances came to overshadow her real asset: her intellect.”

“We don’t often get to see or hear stories about Black queens, and that was really important for me, as well as for my daughter, and just for my community to be able to know those stories because there are tons of them! Cleopatra is a queen who many know about, but not in her truth,” says Jada in a statement. “She’s been displayed as overtly sexual, excessive, and corrupt, yet she was a strategist, an intellect, a commanding force of nature, who fought to protect her kingdom… and her heritage is highly debated. This season will dive deeper into her history and re-assesses this fascinating part of her story.”

Queen Cleopatra premieres May 10. It follows the story of warrior Queen Njinga of Angola, which is now available on the streaming platform.

Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee featured in new trailer for Disney+’s ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ series

A new trailer for the upcoming Disney+ original series The Muppets Mayhem has arrived, and carrying on the fine Muppets Show tradition, it doesn’t skimp on celebrity cameos, including Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee.

The new comedy series follows the beloved Muppets band, The Electric Mayhem Band — including its famous members Dr. Teeth, Animal, Sgt. Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot and Lips — and their comeback to record their first-ever studio album.

The official trailer opens with some famous guest stars reflecting on their own experiences growing up with the famous band for The Muppet Show.

“The Mayhem? They taught Mötley Crüe how to shred and party,” Lee jokes. “They tattooed their name on me when I was passed out,” showing off a huge tat of “Mayhem” on his rib cage.

Other artists giving testimonials in the trailer include Chris Stapleton and Lil Nas X, while the upcoming series will feature guest appearances by Billy Corgan, Susanna Hoffs, Paula Abdul, Steve Aoki, Sofia Carson, deadmau5, Kesha, Morgan Freeman, Ben Schwartz, Kevin Smith, Zedd, Danny Trejo, “Weird Al” Yankovic and more.

All episodes of The Muppets Mayhem will be available to stream on Disney+ starting May 10.

Timbaland says new Justin Timberlake album is “done”: “It’s fun Justin, nothing too heavy”

Good news for Justin Timberlake fans: He has a new album coming and apparently it has the same vibe as his 2006 smash FutureSex/LoveSounds.

Justin’s longtime friend, collaborator and producer Timbaland tells Variety that he and Justin “just finished up” the singer’s new album and adds, “Everything sounds great. Now it’s really on him how and when he envisions it to come out, but it’s done and it’s coming.”

Asked to describe the sound of the album, Tim revealed, “It’s fun Justin — it’s like FutureSex/LoveSounds but nothing too heavy, just giving you what you expect from us.”

That album, which sold over 10 million copies, features the #1 hits “SexyBack,” “My Love” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.”

Timbaland explains, “Music is a young sport — of course, we’ve both seen a lot of life, but you have to bring out the 13-year-old kid again, you know? We had songs that maybe were too complicated, so we said we want it to feel like FutureSex part two, so we did songs that will fit that.”

When the album does arrive, it’ll be JT’s first release since 2018’s Man of the Woods.

Netflix collabs with Lacoste for ‘Bridgerton’, ‘Stranger Things’ and other show-themed fashions

A new collaboration between the streaming service and Lacoste will let viewers of the Netflix shows Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Lupin and Sex Education literally wear their fandom on their sleeves — and other parts of their bodies.

The designer label famous for its crocodile logo polos has created a new line celebrating the streaming hits, which launched Wednesday.

According to the ad copy, the Lacoste x Netflix collection “reimagines Lacoste’s iconic genderless polos, sweatshirts, tracksuits, footwear, and more, from the Upside Down to Las Encinas high school with the French label’s famous Croc disguising as characters from the fan-favorite Netflix shows such as Stranger Things‘ Demogorgon and Bridgerton‘s Queen Charlotte.”

Florence + the Machine dropping new song “Mermaids” next week

Florence + the Machine is dropping a new song next week.

The track is titled “Mermaids” and arrives on Friday, April 21.

“Mermaids” follows Florence’s 2022 album Dance Fever, which features the single “My Love.” Last week, Florence teased that a “new song is coming to the Dance Fever universe,” perhaps suggesting that a deluxe version of the record is in the works.

Meanwhile, Florence + the Machine released a cover of No Doubt‘s “Just a Girl” in March for the second season of the Showtime series Yellowjackets.

Lil Nas X, Kesha, Zedd, Paula Abdul to guest on Disney+’s ‘The Muppets Mayhem’

Big-name pop stars jamming with The Muppets — can you picture that? Disney+ has released a list of all the famous musicians who’ll be guest starring on The Muppets Mayhem, a new series focusing on The Muppets’ famous Electric Mayhem Band.

The series follows the band — Dr. Teeth, Animal, Janice, Lips, Zoot and Floyd — as they attempt to record their first-ever studio album. The concept is that they’re a legendary band who everyone has heard of, but they struggle to fit into today’s music industry.

Of course, the band runs into some real-life artists on their journey, including Lil Nas X, Kesha, Zedd, Paula Abdul, “Weird Al” Yankovic, country superstar Chris Stapleton, deejays Steve Aoki and deadmau5, Mötley Crüe‘s Tommy Lee and many more.

A lot of those guests appear in the new trailer for the show, including Lil Nas X, who claims, “I grew up idolizing Dr. Teeth. I bought gold grills just to be like him!”

Even Ryan Seacrest will pop up on the series, which debuts May 10. In addition, some of the guest actors who’ll be appearing include Rachel Bloom, Kevin Smith, Nicole Byer, Morgan Freeman, Jack McBrayer and Danny Trejo.
