Seventy-eight dead, 104 rescued after boat carrying migrants capsizes near Greece

(ATHENS, Greece) — Rescue efforts were underway Wednesday after a fishing vessel carrying migrants capsized and sank in the Mediterranean Sea, about 54 miles off the coast of Pylos, Greece.

At least 104 people have been rescued and 78 have died, the Greek Coast Guard said. Unconfirmed early estimates put hundreds of migrants — perhaps as many as 650 — on board when the boat began to sink at about 2:30 a.m. local time.

The Greek Coast Guard was in charge of the rescue operation, which included six Coast Guard vessels, a Greek Navy frigate, a military transport plane, an Air Force helicopter, several private vessels and a drone from the European Union border protection agency.

Survivors are being brought to a hospital on Kalamata, a city in southern Greece, officials said. Mayan Queen IV, a 300-foot yacht, picked up some survivors.

The Coast Guard had contacted the vessel midday on Tuesday as it traveled through international waters, according to a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

A ship approached the fishing boat with supplies later on Tuesday, but passengers refused further help, saying they wanted to continue on their path toward Italy, the Coast Guard said.

The number of illegal border crossings detected in the Central Mediterranean nearly quadrupled in the first four months of the year from the same year-earlier period, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, said last month.

More than 42,200 such crossings were recorded from January through April, Frontex said. That amounted to the highest level recorded since Frontex began collecting data in 2009, the agency said.

“Organised crime groups are taking advantage of political volatility in some departure countries to increase the number of migrants they smuggle across EU borders,” Frontex said in a statement in May.

Wednesday’s capsizing was another “tragedy in the Aegean,” the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration said on Twitter.

The group called for comprehensive action including more pathways for legal migration.

New box set focuses on Stevie Nicks’ solo career

Stevie Nicks’ solo career is being revisited with a new box set from Rhino.

Stevie Nicks Complete Studio Albums & Rarities will feature all eight of Nicks’ solo records — 1981’s Bella Donna, 1983’s The Wild Heart, 1985’s Rock a Little, 1989’s The Other Side of the Mirror, 1994’s Street Angel, 2001’s Trouble in Shangri-La, 2011’s In Your Dreams and 2014’s 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault — with many of them remastered from the original analog masters.

There will also be a Rarities album, with 23 non-album tracks, including songs that appeared on movie and TV soundtracks; three songs from her 1991 hits collection, Timespace; and her 2022 cover of Buffalo Springfield’s classic “For What It’s Worth.” It also includes the just-released “One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star,” which was the B-side to the Rock A Little single “Talk To Me.”

The box set will be released on July 28 in a variety of formats, including a 16-LP limited edition set, which will consist of 3,000 numbered copies, pressed on crystal clear vinyl. Three of the albums — Street Angel, Trouble in Shangri-La and In Your Dreams — are making their vinyl debut.

Snoop Dogg and Sade pull out of Songwriters Hall of Fame 2023 class

The Songwriters Hall of Fame 2023 class will be inducted on Thursday, June 15, but Snoop Dogg will no longer be part of the festivities. The rapper dropped out due to “personal reasons,” according to Billboard, but is hoping to join the class of 2024. Sade has also pulled out, with interest in being inducted with a future class.

Artists become eligible for a Songwriters Hall of Fame nomination 20 years after their first commercial release. Still being inducted on Thursday are Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard, Gloria Estefan, Jeff Lynne and Liz Rose.

The ceremony will take place at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

Tom Holland on passing “the baton” of Spider-Man and why he won’t talk about his relationship with Zendaya

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, The Crowded Room star Tom Holland talked about his superhero success, and pondered hanging up his web-shooters once and for all.

The actor explained that before the writers strike, he, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Spider-Man movie producer Amy Pascal batted around ideas for a fourth stand-alone adventure as Peter Parker, following the blockbuster success of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“The first few meetings were about, ‘Why would we do this again?'” Holland explains. “And I think we found the reason why. I’m really, really happy with where we’re at.”

However, the 27-year-old admits, “But I’m also a little apprehensive about it. There’s a bit of a stigma about the fourth one in all franchises. I feel like we hit a home run with our first franchise and there’s a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton to the next lucky kid that gets to bring this character to life.”

Holland reiterated how close he got with his fellow Spider-Men and No Way Home co-stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. “Myself, Andrew, Tobey — we have this amazing bond as three people who have been through something that is so unique that we really are like brothers. We have a great group chat and we catch up … It’s called the Spider-Boys.”

What do they talk about? “Spider-Man stuff,” he says.

What he wouldn’t expound upon was his relationship with Zendaya. “Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible,” he explains. “We don’t think that we owe it to anyone, it’s our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers.”

Woman, 28, arrested for allegedly enrolling at high school as a 17-year-old

(NEW YORK) — A 28-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly posing as a 17-year-old student and attending a Louisiana high school, authorities said.

Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano, 28, and her mother, Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, 46, both of Boutte, Louisiana, were each charged Tuesday with one count of injuring public records, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Serrano-Alvarado allegedly used a fraudulent passport and birth certificate to enroll her 28-year-daughter at Hahnville High School in Boutte during the 2022-2023 school year, according to the sheriff’s office.

School officials launched an investigation after getting “a tip that a female student, who was on record as being 17 years old, was in fact an adult possibly in her mid 20’s,” the sheriff’s office said. School officials then relayed their findings to the authorities on May 29, the sheriff’s office said.

St. Charles Parish Public Schools confirmed in a statement Tuesday that school officials notified the sheriff’s office that fake documents were used to enroll an adult at the high school. A school district spokesperson declined to comment on when the 28-year-old was allegedly enrolled or who submitted the tip to the school.

The district added that it “will enhance processes to determine the authenticity of enrollment documents for current and future students as well as modify policy and procedures as warranted.”

Alice Cooper details new ’Road’ album; listen to single “I’m Alice” now

Alice Cooper has announced a new album called Road.

The follow-up to 2021’s Detroit Stories arrives August 25. Cooper recorded Road with his live bandmates, including returning guitarist Nita Strauss.

“For Road, I wanted the band to be involved in the foundation of all the songs,” the “School’s Out” rocker shares. “I only see these guys when we’re on the road. So, I wanted them to be as tight as they are for the show but on all new material. When you have a band this good, I believe in showing it off, and this is my way of doing so.”

You can listen to the lead Road single, the self-referential “I’m Alice,” now via digital outlets.

Cooper will be on tour this summer playing shows with Rob Zombie, as well as Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard.

Billy Joel landed at #1 with his seventh studio release, Glass Houses.

Influenced in part by new wave music, it featured, in Billy’s words, “bigger, louder, faster, shorter and punchier” material.

Four tunes off the album became Top 40 hits, including “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” which was Joel’s first #1 single. Other hits included “You May Be Right,” “Sometimes a Fantasy,” and Don’t Ask Me Why.”

Glass Houses remained on top of the charts for six weeks and went on to be certified seven-times Platinum by the RIAA.

It also earned Joel his fifth Grammy, winning Best Rock Male Vocal Performance.

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan announces new solo album, ‘Lighthouse’

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan is set to release his third solo album, Lighthouse, on October 20 and has just shared the title track from the album.

The record, his first solo release since 2019’s Tenderness, has the rocker “fusing acoustic elements with hard-edged rock ‘n’ roll to land at the sweet spot between soul-searching reflection and pure energy.”

Lighthouse features 11 tracks, with guest appearances by McKagan’s GNR bandmate Slash on a song called “Hope,” Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell on “I Just Don’t Know” and Iggy Pop on a reprise of the title track.

Netflix and chew: Streaming giant planning pop-up restaurant

Netflix pretty much brought the term “bingeing” into public consciousness, so it’s almost natural it will be letting fans binge in the traditional way: at a restaurant.

The streamer just announced plans for a pop-up restaurant experience called Netflix Bites, “an elevated dining experience” from several of the platform’s well-known chefs.

In the announcement, the company asks, “Have you ever watched Chef’s Table…Is It Cake? or Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend and wished you could dive into your TV to sample the delectable dishes on screen? Now, for the first time, you can get a taste of the shows you know and love through this limited-time pop-up restaurant.”

The eatery is opening June 30 in Los Angeles and will spotlight acclaimed chefs from popular Netflix series such as chef Curtis Stone (Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend), Dominique Crenn (Chef’s Table, Iron Chef…), Rodney Scott (Chef’s Table: BBQ), Ming Tsai (Iron Chef…), Ann Kim (Chef’s Table: Pizza), Nadiya Hussain (Nadiya Bakes), Jacques Torres (Nailed It!) and Andrew Zimmern (Iron Chef…).

“These culinary legends will team up to create a special tasting menu that features flavorful bites showing off their unique specialties and giving fans and foodies alike a one-of-a-kind restaurant experience,” Netflix teases.

“To top it all off, fan-favorite mixologists from Netflix’s Drink Masters — including Frankie Solarik, Julie Reiner, LP O’Brien and Kate Gerwin — will craft custom cocktails for the drink menu,” they add.

Demi Lovato explains why she started using she/her pronouns again

Demi Lovato is sharing why she decided to stop exclusively using they/them pronouns and go back to identifying as she/her.

In an interview with GQ Hype Spain, the singer says she simply got tired of explaining it to people.

“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,” she says in the interview, translated from Spanish. “It was absolutely exhausting.”

“I just got tired,” she adds. “But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

To that end, Demi hopes for more gender neutral options for things like public restrooms and on official forms where you have to select a gender.

“I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it,” she says. “Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me.”

Demi came out as nonbinary in 2021. She readopted she/her pronouns last year.
