Gaza-Egypt border crossing at Rafah partially reopens after more than 2 years

(LONDON) — The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt has reopened to limited pedestrian traffic, Israeli authorities confirmed Monday.

The reopening is the first step in implementing the second phase of President Trump’s Gaza peace plan. The crossing has been completely closed to Palestinians in Gaza since May 2024. Egypt has not allowed unfettered access to its territory through the crossing.

“Following the arrival of the EUBAM teams on behalf of the European Union, the Rafah crossing has now opened to the movement of residents, for both entry and exit,” an Israeli security official told ABC News.

The first group of Palestinians returning from Egypt has arrived in the Gaza Strip. Khaled Megawer, Egypt’s North Sinai governor general, said 50 Palestinians were expected to cross into Egypt on Monday.

Raeed Al-Nemes, a Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) spokesperson, told ABC News that a total of 15 Palestinians – including five Palestinian patients and 10 relatives – left Gaza via the Rafah crossing on Monday.

“The health situation in Gaza is extremely dire,” he said, calling on international organizations and the National Gaza Administration Committee to pressure Israel to allow a larger number of patients to travel abroad for treatment.

On Sunday night, the Israeli Army released video and pictures of a new Israel Defense Forces security checkpoint it will use for Gazans entering Rafah. In a statement, the IDF said “forces have completed in recent days the establishment of the ‘Regavim’ designated checkpoint, which is managed by the security establishment in the area under IDF control.”

The IDF added, “The security establishment forces at the checkpoint check the identities of those entering against lists approved by the Israeli security establishment and carry out a strict inspection of their luggage.”

Israel said it will approve the names of all Gazans entering or leaving the area according to terms reached under Trump’s 20-point peace plan.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health announced Monday that 150 hospitals and approximately 300 ambulances were ready to receive injured and wounded Palestinians.

About 22,000 injured Gazans need medical evacuation, a Hamas spokesperson said Sunday.

On the other side of the crossing, about 10,700 Palestinians who have been evacuated to seek treatment outside Gaza through the World Health Organization will return to the territory after their treatment, the PRCS spokesman said.

But beneath the ice, something terrifying has awakened,” its official synopsis reads. “Could it be from the Upside Down? From the depths of Hawkins Lab? Or from somewhere else entirely? Charli XCX is currently in movie theaters with her film The Moment, but soon she’ll be on your TV — in a Super Bowl ad.

Charli reteamed with The Moment director Aidan Zamiri and co-star Rachel Sennott for an ad for Poppi, a low-calorie, low-sugar soda that contains prebiotics. Charli posted photos on Instagram of herself and Rachel promoting the ad. She’s wearing a “Rachel is the moment” tee, while Rachel sports a “Charli is the moment” shirt. Charli also posted several behind-the-scenes shots that appear to be from the shoot, including one that shows Rachel with a flamethrower.

“I love working with Aidan and Rachel. We’ve done so much stuff together now. … It’s just so easy to work with them, and it’s always so fun,” Charli tells Cosmopolitan“When we were approached to do this ad for poppi, and we knew it was gonna have to be this colorful, bright, chaotic madness, I knew I wanted them to be a part of it.”

When asked if she has a favorite Poppi flavor, Charli tells Cosmo, “To be honest, I was drinking all of the different flavors all day on set, and they were delicious. The vibes were pretty crazy, especially with Rachel having a flamethrower. It got quite hot in the room, and it really did feel like a genuinely wild party.”

You’ll be able to see the results on Feb. 8 during the big game.

SZA added another Grammy to her collection Sunday night, winning best rap melodic performance for her feature on Kendrick Lamar‘s “luther.” Though she appeared surprised, she said she’s thrilled about the win.

“I literally did not expect to win. I just feel like the records that were nominated were so amazing,” SZA said, adding she “didn’t think [Kendrick] could win again” after his wins last year and at this year’s Grammys.

She expressed gratitude for Kendrick’s support. “I just felt so blessed that Kendrick continues to lift me up. … I just trust God and trust him and things be working out,” she said.

Reflecting on the song itself, SZA said it’s one of the few tracks she’s been involved in that soothes her, capturing the smoothness and gentleness of the late Luther Vandross. “Being allowed to tap into that, it’s such a blessing,” she said. “And the fact that it’s brought us blessings, just like it brought him blessings, it’s just amazing.”

In a separate interview with ET, SZA addressed the moment Cher mistakenly announced Luther Vandross as the winner of the best rap melodic performance category.

“We share the frequency of the [Luther Vandross] song [‘If This World Were Mine’ with Cheryl Lynn],” she told ET. “Like, that’s his frequency that allowed us to win and that allowed it to be memorable.”

“So, [Cher’s] not wrong and she’s from that era. She probably really knew Luther Vandross,” SZA continued. “Of course, her brain and her energy is connecting that energy to the energy that we’re sharing.”

“We’re mooching off what Luther already gave us,” she added. “I wish I could speak to him. Thank you, Luther.”

Ariana Grande wasn’t at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, but she did win a trophy — her third career Grammy.

Ari and her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo won for best pop duo/group performance for their rendition of “Defying Gravity,” from the soundtrack of the first Wicked film. Ari posted the announcement of the win on her Instagram Story and wrote, “this is so special. @recordingacademy than you so so so much! Congratulations to the incredible @cynthiaerivo i love you & am so grateful to share this.”

She also thanked the song’s composer, Stephen Schwartz, as well as her record company and Wicked director Jon M. Chu.

Ariana previously won in that same category for “Rain On Me,” her duet with Lady Gaga, in 2021. Her other win came in 2019 for best pop vocal album for Sweetner.

Sunday night at the Grammys, Cher appeared to forget that she was supposed to present the record of the year trophy. When she eventually did, she mistakenly announced that the winner was the late R&B icon Luther Vandross, instead of the actual winner: the song “luther” by SZA and Kendrick Lamar. But SZA said she understood Cher’s flub.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, SZA referred to the fact that “luther” has that title because it’s based on a sample of “If This World Were Mine,” recorded by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn in 1982.

“We share the frequency of the song. Like, that’s his frequency that allowed us to win and that allowed it to be memorable,” SZA said of Vandross. “So, [Cher’s] not wrong and she’s from that era. She probably really knew Luther Vandross. Of course, her brain and her energy is connecting that energy to the energy that we’re sharing.”

SZA continued, “We’re mooching off what Luther already gave us … I wish I could speak to him. Thank you, Luther.”

Vandross, who died in 2005, sold over 40 million records and won eight Grammy Awards.

Although there has been no official announcement, Clive Davis appeared to confirm rumors that Meryl Streep has been cast to play Joni Mitchell in the upcoming biopic on the singer, penned by Mitchell’s good friend, writer/director Cameron Crowe.

According to Rolling Stone, the music exec spilled the beans during his annual pre-Grammy party Saturday in Los Angeles. While introducing Mitchell to the audience, he mentioned that Streep would portray in Crowe’s film.

Crowe also seemed to confirm the news to the mag. When asked to comment on the casting news, Crowe told Rolling Stone to refer to Davis’ announcement. Streep’s rep declined to comment on Davis’ statement, while Mitchell’s rep did not respond to the mag’s request for a comment.

In March 2023, it was announced that Crowe was planning to write and direct a biopic on Mitchell, a project he had been working on with her for two years. In July of 2024, rumors surfaced that Streep would be playing the singer in her later years.

Crowe offered an update on the long-in-the-works Mitchell film in October 2025, telling Variety, “We’re gonna do it next year.” When asked about the casting at the time, he said there’s “nothing I can confirm,” adding, “I’m just grateful that people are talking about it and that I get to tell the story.”

‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother missing in Arizona, evidence of crime at home: Sheriff

‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother missing in Arizona, evidence of crime at home: Sheriff
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced on Sunday that a woman missing in Arizona is the mother of “Today Show” host Savannah Guthrie. (Pima County Sheriff’s Department)

(NEW YORK) — There is evidence of a crime at the home of the missing 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, according to authorities in Arizona.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area on Saturday night, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. She was reported missing on Sunday around noon, authorities said.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators processed her home on Sunday and “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” and that it is considered a crime scene.

“She did not leave on her own, we know that,” Nanos said.

Nancy Guthrie is described as having some physical ailments and limited mobility, but does not have cognitive issues, her family said, according to the sheriff.

She takes medication that if she doesn’t have in 24 hours, “it could be fatal,” Nanos said Monday.

“So we make a plea to anyone that knows anything about this, who has seen something, heard something, to contact us, call 911,” he said, urging residents to check any home security cameras.

The search and rescue effort for Nancy Guthrie, which was conducted late into Sunday night “to no avail,” has ended for the time being, Nanos said.

“Right now, we don’t see this as a search mission, as much as we do a crime scene,” he said.

There’s no indication at this time that the public is in danger, the sheriff said.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night by family members, when her children brought her home around 9:45 p.m. local time, according to Nanos. The following morning, her family got a call from their mother’s church saying she wasn’t there, he said.

“The family went to the house. I’m thinking they spent some time looking for her themselves before they called us,” he said.

An NBCUniversal spokesperson confirmed early on Monday that Nancy Guthrie is missing and said the family is “working closely with local law enforcement.”

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” Savannah Guthrie said in a statement read by Craig Melvin on the “Today” show on Monday. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”

“We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900,” the statement continued.
