Supreme Court weighs ‘geofence warrants’ for cellphone data

(WASHINGTON) — For generations, cops have obtained warrants to lawfully seek information from a specific suspect in a crime.

The Supreme Court on Monday is considering whether investigators can also use so-called “geofence warrants” to do the reverse — scanning cell phone data of thousands of innocent individuals in hopes of finding a suspect to apprehend.

The landmark case is the first time the justices will consider whether the controversial practice of digital dragnets, which have grown in popularity among law enforcement with advances in technology, violate constitutional protections against unreasonable searches.

Critics say the warrants intrude on Americans’ reasonable expectation of privacy by compelling service providers to turn over broad swaths of user location history and time stamps within a specified area over a specified timeframe.

Advocates for geofence warrants call them a critical tool that will help police more quickly solve crimes, in turn making communities safer. They also emphasize that most cellphone users knowingly transmit location data to third-party tech companies already.

The petitioner in the case, Okello Chatrie, was indicted on charges related to an armed robbery of a Virginia credit union in 2019 and wants key cellphone location evidence against him thrown out.

Authorities relied heavily on data obtained from Google under a geofence warrant that placed Chatrie’s cellphone within 150 meters of the bank during the crime.

The Trump administration, which is defending the law enforcement tool and Chatrie’s prosecution, argues that by sharing location information with apps and service providers like Google, a person forfeits any expectation of privacy.

A decision in the case — Chatrie v U.S. — is expected by the end of June.

It’s April 27, and that means everyone’s favorite meme is about to make its annual appearance — but this time a member of the Backstreet Boys is joining in on the *NSYNC fun.

Joey Fatone and AJ McLean both appear in the campaign for this year’s “It’s Gonna Be May” flash sale at Great Wolf Lodge, which has both of them yelling “It’s Gonna Be May!” AJ gives props to *NSYNC for having a meme that’s become “a staple.”

“We also had a meme, but it just didn’t really take off,” AJ reveals. “There was ‘As long as you love May.’ But ours kind of went [away] really quickly. And theirs has been going for years.”

“I would rather be in the Sphere as opposed to just talking about ‘It’s gonna be May!'” Joey responds. He insists he’s not that jealous of Backstreet Boys’ sold-out residency at the Vegas venue.

“Honestly, I’m so proud of them,” says Joey. “Yes, there’s a little bit of jealousy, but I don’t know, it’s different. … I guess because I’m older, it’s not a competition anymore. … We’re constantly just rooting for each other.”

The globe-spanning friendship of Luke Combs and Ed Sheeran is based on something simple

Not only did Luke Combs make the 2026 TIME100 list of the most influential people on the planet, he’s also featured on one of four worldwide covers.

In the issue, the Huntersville, North Carolina, native is the subject of a tribute written by a fellow superstar from Suffolk, England: Ed Sheeran.

So what’s the secret behind the friendship between the two men from different sides of the world?

“I just think we’re really similar in our kind of approach to our life and, you know, prioritizing our family and obviously being able to do things at a really high level, you know, as far as records and tours and all that crazy stuff,” Luke told ABC Audio on the red carpet at the TIME100 Gala April 23 in New York City.

“But just being grounded in the things that really matter, which is, you know, friends, family. I feel like we have a big bond over that,” he adds.

Luke’s “Sleepless in a Hotel Room” hangs on for a third week at #1 in the latest edition of Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart.

AFI announces 20th anniversary ‘Decemberunderground’ vinyl reissue

Hey, Miss Murder, can AFI’s Decemberunderground return to vinyl? It sure can!

Davey Havok and company have announced a vinyl reissue of their hit 2006 album in honor of its 20th anniversary.

The reissue, which marks the first time Decemberunderground has been available on vinyl since 2006, will come in three variants, including a limited-edition deluxe package featuring a bonus 7-inch single with two bonus tracks.

Decemberunderground marked AFI’s seventh studio album and spawned their most successful single, “Miss Murder.”

Coco Jones talks ‘LUVAGIRL,’ being chosen for the ‘TIME’100 list

Coco Jones is loving life.

The “LUVAGIRL” singer says her latest single is representative not just of her status as a soon-to-be-married woman, but about her feelings on all aspects of her life.

“I am engaged, I’m in love. And I’m in love with myself, you know?” she told ABC Audio on the red carpet of the TIME100 Gala in New York City. “It’s not just about, of course, us. It’s about the whole intention of my next project. It’s very, ‘I love my life. I love me. I love my girls. I love my man. I love everything.’”

Coco, who revealed her engagement to NBA star Donovan Mitchell last summer, does indeed have a lot to be grateful for.

She was among those chosen for the TIME100 list as one of the most influential people of 2026. She was celebrated at the TIME100 Gala on April 23 and performed at the event, as well.

“I think it’s an honor to be here, to be even on that list,” she told ABC Audio. “It’s such an accomplishment.”

She added, “TIME100 has, I mean, just been a home for all the powerhouse culture movers. And so to be considered … to be actually on the list, it’s just a huge accomplishment and a huge honor. I’m really grateful.”

In the magazine’s TIME100 issue, Coco’s best friend Jaylen Barron paid tribute to her. Barron wrote that Coco is “incredibly grounded” and someone who “will always tell you the truth, even when it’s hard,” adding that she sets an example for young Black women by staying true to herself without compromising her values.

Others who made the list include Anderson .Paak, Keke Palmer, Sterling K. Brown and Zoe Saldaña.

Lindsey Buckingham reveals what inspires him to make music

Lindsey Buckingham is giving fans a little insight into what inspires him to continue to create new music. The rocker broached the subject in a video posted to Instagram, captioned, “Remember, you always have choices.”

“The thing about new music or about continuing to make any music at all is that you are again presented with a choice,” he says. “Do you follow your instincts? Do you following your gut? Do follow your vision? Do you take risks? Or do you find yourself somewhat caught in repeating formulas or concepts of yourself that have been defined externally for you?”

Buckingham goes on to mention an unnamed artist who told him, “I just don’t get excited about making my albums anymore. I don’t get excited about writing,” to which Buckingham told him, without judgement, “Well, you know, you have taken that road of fulfilling expectations that are foisted on you to some degree.”

“I had the luxury to be in a hugely successful band that could have swallowed me alive,” he says, referring to Fleetwood Mac. “But I somehow was able to use the opportunity from that to reject some of what that was about on a commercial level, on a monetary level, even on an artistic level.”

He compared the decision to making a Steven Spielberg film versus an indie film, noting an artist is more likely to grow with an indie film.

“I’m just saying, if you’re going to follow the commerce, you’re not necessarily going to find the religion in what you do,” he concludes. “And so when I contemplate the idea of continuing to write new music and to make new albums, it’s in pursuit of and because of the religion, for sure.”

Another hit for the King of Pop: ‘Michael’ tops this weekend’s box office

Michael Jackson had a lot of #1 hits throughout his career, so it seems fitting that a movie about his life has landed at #1 as well.

The biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Michael Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the title role, moonwalked its way to #1 at the box office this weekend, debuting in the top spot with a haul of $97 million domestically, and $217 million globally, Box Office Mojo reports.

According to Variety, the domestic haul breaks the record for the best biopic debut. The previous record holder was the 2015 N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, which earned $60 million in its debut week.

Michael’s opening is also the second-best opening of the year, with only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie doing better, with its $131 million debut.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie slips to #2 this week with $21.2 million in earnings, followed by Project Hail Mary at #3 with $13.2 million. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy and The Drama round out the top five with $5.6 million and $2.6 million, respectively.

Besides Michael, the only other debuts to make it in the top 10 this weekend were Over Your Dead Body, starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving, at #8 with $1.4 million, and the YoungBoy Never Broke Again documentary, American Youngboy, at #10 with $1.2 million.

Madonna makes surprise appearance at LGBTQ bar in West Hollywood

Madonna followed up her surprise appearance at Coachella last weekend with another surprise Saturday night in West Hollywood.

She popped up at the iconic LGBTQ bar The Abbey and took over the DJ booth, along with her Confessions and Confessions II producer Stuart Price, Variety reports. Madonna’s boyfriend, Akeem Morris, was also on hand.

“Hello, children, mother is here to save you,” Madonna told the crowd. “Are you ready to dance for me? Come on meet me on the dance floor.”

She sang “I Feel So Free,” the first single from Confessions II, and performed for about 30 minutes overall. The crowd included Julia Fox, Tori Spelling and Britney Spears’ former husband Sam Asghari, according to Variety. Also on hand, according to Madonna’s record label, were Addison Rae, Lily Allen, Cara Delevingne and Bebe Rexha.

The event doubled as a birthday party for Abbey owner Tristan Schukraft, who Madonna playfully spanked as the crowd sang “Happy Birthday.”
