(WASHINGTON) — A group of moderate House Republicans broke ranks with GOP leadership on Wednesday to force a vote on a clean, three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act insurance subsidies set to expire at the end of the year.

Four Republicans signed onto House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ discharge petition, giving it the 218 signatures needed to force a vote.

The decision by moderate Republican Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Lawler, Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie to join Democrats comes after the Republican-controlled House Rules Committee on Tuesday night blocked amendments to extend the ACA subsidies from advancing.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has also resisted from allowing an up or down amendment vote on extending the expiring subsidies, which were Democrats’ focal point of the record 43-day government shutdown this fall.

Moderate Republicans who signed onto the petition took aim at House leadership.

Lawler, of New York, said he doesn’t endorse the Democrats’ bill as written,

“…When leadership blocks action entirely, Congress has a responsibility to act. My priority is ensuring Hudson Valley families aren’t caught in the gridlock,” Lawler wrote on X.

“Our only request was a Floor vote on this compromise, so that the American People’s voice could be heard on this issue. That request was rejected,” Pennsylvania’s Fitzpatrick said in a statement. “Then, at the request of House leadership, me and my colleagues filed multiple amendments, and testified at length to those amendments. House leadership then decided to reject every single one of these amendments. As I’ve stated many times before, the only policy that is worse than a clean three-year extension without any reforms, is a policy of complete expiration without any bridge. Unfortunately, it is House leadership themselves that have forced this outcome.”

What happens next?

The Republican-controlled House will hold vote on a clean three-year extension of the ACA subsidies; however, the vote is not expected to occur until January 2026 at the earliest given the rules for when a discharge petition can hit the floor.

The big question now is how the Senate will respond. The Senate already rejected a clean three-year extension of the subsidies in a pair of dueling health care votes last week, though several Republican senators crossed the aisle to join all Democrats in supporting it.

On Wednesday night, the House will hold a vote at approximately 5:30 p.m. on a narrow Republican health care package that does not address the expiring ACA tax credits.

Johnson needs a simple majority for the bill to pass and can only afford to lose three Republican votes. Democratic leaders are whipping their members against the bill. The vote will be tight for Johnson, who continues to navigate a slim majority.

The House GOP proposal would expand the availability of association health plans and what are known as “CHOICE arrangements;” impose new transparency requirements on pharmacy benefit managers to lower drug costs; and appropriate money for cost-sharing reductions to reduce premiums in the individual market.

(LOS ANGELES) — New videos appear to show the moments leading up to the arrest of Nick Reiner for the murders of his parents, renowned Hollywood director Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner.

One of the videos appears to show Nick Reiner, 32, moments before his Sunday night arrest near the University of Southern California. In the video, he’s wearing jeans, a striped jacket and a baseball cap. He’s seen with a red backpack slung over one shoulder as he enters a gas station and purchases a drink.

Another video shows him outside walking near a crosswalk when several police vehicles with flashing lights surround him. He can be seen in the video raising his hands.

Police said they found him thanks to “good, solid police work.”

Nick Reiner was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder, with the special circumstance of multiple murders, for allegedly stabbing his parents to death early on Sunday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said.

Nick Reiner’s defense attorney, Alan Jackson — who helped defend Karen Read in Massachusetts — told reporters that the 32-year-old is expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, Hochman said.

“No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty,” Hochman said.

The Reiners’ daughter found her parents’ bodies in their Brentwood home on Sunday, sources told ABC News.

A neighbor told ABC News that actors Billy Crystal and Larry David were seen at the house after police arrived on Sunday, and the neighbor said, “Billy looked like he was about to cry.”

Nick Reiner — who was living on his parents’ property, according to a former family security guard — had been open about battling drug addiction since he was a teenager. In 2016, Nick Reiner worked with his dad on the movie “Being Charlie,” which was based largely on his struggle with drug addiction.

Sources told ABC News that Nick Reiner got into an argument with his father at a holiday party on Saturday night and was seen acting strangely.

“Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes,” Hochman said in a statement on Tuesday.

Back in September 2024, Lady Gaga performed a “secret” concert at LA’s Belasco Theatre to promote her then-newly released album Harlequin, a companion to her movie Joker: Folie à Deux. Now we may finally get to see it.

On her Instagram Story on Tuesday night, reposted by a fan, Gaga shared a video that showed an empty stage with a drum kit on it; the word “Harlequin” is scrawled on the bass drum. Next to that was a carton of “Gayle Valley Farms” milk, the same carton that was originally used to announce the album and its track listing. The video ends with the words “Coming Soon.”

According to Variety, which reviewed the concert, the Belasco show “was utterly bonkers but also one of the best things [Gaga]’s ever done.” It featured Gaga performing the Harlequin album in its entirety, as well as a solo rendition of “Die With a Smile.”

Among the songs she performed, included on the album, were the standards and show tunes “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Smile,” “Get Happy,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “That’s Life.”

Harlequin is currently nominated for a Grammy for best traditional pop album, which might be what has prompted the show’s release.

If you’ll be traveling to Tasmania to see Foo Fighters‘ sold-out stadium concert on the Australian island state, you won’t have to “Learn to Fly” yourself.

The airline Virgin Australia has announced extra flights around the Jan. 24 show, which adds about 700 extra seats. The newly added trips include two additional return services between Melbourne and the Tasmania city of Launceston on Jan. 23-25, and two additional return services between Sydney and Launceston on Jan. 24-25.

The Foos concert also coincides with the 2026 Australia Day weekend celebration.

“We have the broadest jet network between Launceston and the mainland, with direct services from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, making it easier for fans to fly directly to the concert,” says Virgin Australia Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Alistair Hartley in statement. “It’s shaping up to be one of the busiest travel weekends of 2026 for northern Tasmania, and we’ll keep monitoring bookings to determine if more seats are needed.”

As previously reported, the Foo Fighters Tasmania show sold out in “record time,” according to promoter Frontier Touring.

“We have a very special relationship with Tasmania – as we do with all of Australia,” frontman Dave Grohl said.

Foo Fighters’ other live plans include a Jan. 14 benefit concert in Los Angeles, which celebrates Grohl’s birthday, and a full U.S. stadium tour launching in August.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin gave a surprise performance at a couple’s recent wedding in England.

In footage posted by the BBC, you can see Martin, wearing a white beanie, sitting at a piano and playing the song “ALL MY LOVE,” a cut off Coldplay’s 2024 album, Moon Music.

According to the BBC, the groom’s mother sent a message to Martin asking if he could record a video for the couple. He instead decided to fly in by helicopter and perform in person.

“I’m very happy for the couple,” says venue owner Alexander Brown. “It made their special day extra special, I couldn’t quite believe it.”

Perhaps Martin felt compelled to celebrate the beginning of a relationship after the biggest Coldplay headline of 2025 involved possibly ending one. During a July show in Boston, Coldplay inadvertently caught a couple seemingly engaging in an affair when they appeared on the big screen during a kiss-cam segment.

Though the pair ducked out of frame when they realized they were on camera, the internet quickly identified them as Kristin Cabot and Andy Byron, two executives at a company called Astronomer. Both resigned after the incident.

Several friends of the late Rob Reiner and Michele Singer are remembering the couple after they were found stabbed to death in their home in California on Sunday.

Billy Crystal and Janice Crystal, Albert Brooks and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan Zweibel and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry Levinson and Diana Levinson, and Ambassador James Costos and Michael Smith shared a joint statement with The Associated Press on Tuesday, paying tribute to the couple, who were frequent collaborators and worked together on several iconic classic films, including When Harry Met Sally… and Misery.

The statement memorialized Rob Reiner as an unparalleled director who “was always at the top of his game.”

“Absorbing all he had learned from his father Carl (Reiner) and his mentor Norman Lear, Rob Reiner not only was a great comic actor, he became a master story teller,” it read. “There is no other director who has his range. From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentary he was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films.”

“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the statement continued. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”

Rob Reiner and Singer were also remembered for their activism.

“Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better and with his loving wife Michele, he had the perfect partner,” their friends wrote. “Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens. … They were a special force together-dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”

The friends ended their statement with a quote from what they said was one of Rob Reiner’s favorite films.

“There is a line from one of Rob’s favorite films, It’s a Wonderful Life, ‘Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?'” they wrote. “You have no idea.”

Rob Reiner and Singer were found dead with stab wounds on Sunday in their Los Angeles home.

The couple’s son Nick Reiner was taken into custody on Sunday night and has since been charged by the Los Angeles district attorney with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to his parents’ deaths. He is currently being held without bail.

If convicted, the 32-year-old could face the death penalty.

Fraud charges follow subprime auto lender Tricolor Holdings collapse

(NEW YORK) — Federal prosecutors in New York unsealed criminal charges Wednesday in connection with the collapse of subprime auto lender and used car retailer Tricolor Holdings, which went bankrupt earlier this year.

Founder and CEO Daniel Chu, COO Daniel Goodgame, and former Tricolor executives Jerome Kollar and Ameryn Seibold, were charged with conspiracy, bank fraud and running a continuing financial crimes enterprise, according to the indictment from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Kollar and Seibold have pleaded guilty to fraud and are cooperating with the government, according to prosecutors.

“CEO Daniel Chu was the leader of an elaborate scheme to defraud creditors of Tricolor,” U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement announcing the indictment. “At his direction, Tricolor repeatedly lied to banks and other credit providers, including by falsifying auto-loan data and ‘double pledging’ collateral. Fraud became an integral component of Tricolor’s business strategy.”

“The resulting billion-dollar collapse harmed banks, investors, employees and customers,” Clayton said.

Tricolor Holdings is a provider of subprime auto loans. The company also operates a chain of used car dealerships across the Southwest. It specializes in loans to low-credit and no-credit buyers, often issuing them without a credit check, the indictment said.

The defendants “engaged in a series of frauds directed at each of Tricolor’s lenders,” the indictment said. They allegedly double-pledged the same collateral to multiple lenders, allowing Tricolor to borrow against the same assets, at the same time, repeatedly, according to the indictment, and also “manipulated loan date to make ineligible, delinquent loans appear current and compliant with lender requirements.”

To cover their tracks, the defendants simply fabricated records, including fake customer payments, according to the indictment. Federal prosecutors said this fraudulent activity became Tricolor’s “routine manner of business.”

When Tricolor filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in September, its lenders – which included JPMorgan Chase, Fifth Third Bancorp and Barclays – sustained multi-million-dollar losses, prosecutors said.

Chu, 62, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of the first count of the four with which he’s charged, Continuing Financial Crimes Enterprise. The remaining defendants face sentences of between five and 30 years in prison.
