(ANTWERP, Belgium) — Seven-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles is already a household name but her latest feat upon returning to the world stage has cemented her name in history.

On Sunday, Biles became the first woman to land the Yurchenko double pike in international competition at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

The skill will now be named the Biles II. Skills must be done during an international competition for them to be named after the gymnast.

Biles, 26, already had four other gymnastics skills named for her — two on the floor exercise, one on balance beam and one on vault.

The vault, which is the most difficult jump according to the women’s scoring code, was given a “difficulty score” of 6.4 points before Sunday’s championship, according to NBC Sports. Last year, 5.6 was the most challenging vault performance at the competition.

Her move, which scored a 15.266, began with a roundoff onto the springboard, then a back handspring onto the vaulting table, where she then completed the double pikes before landing.

Biles will compete in all four individual finals and the all-around final later this week.

Exclusive: Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner on returning to the baseball field after fractured skull, concussion
ABC News

(NEW YORK) — Colorado Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner is speaking out for the first time since taking a 92-mph line drive to the back of the head.

The devastating injury in May left him face down in the dirt against the Philadelphia Phillies. He suffered a fractured skull and concussion and was escorted off the field on his feet.

“There’s one of two ways it could have gone and I didn’t want it to go in a negative direction,” Feltner told ABC News’ Good Morning America in an exclusive interview.

“This presents the biggest challenge that I’ve ever had. I remember everything … so working through all of that was a journey,” Feltner said.

He feared he’d never play baseball again.

“Daily activities were pretty tough in the beginning,” he said. “I couldn’t make breakfast, couldn’t do anything really for myself. And then things gradually got easier. I think the biggest thing was balance issues. There was vertigo in the beginning. I didn’t want to get my blood pressure too high because of the brain bleed that I had.”

He went on, “There were fears at the beginning of that, you know, everyday activities were tough. We had four months to work through things. So when we got to that point, that’s kind of when it became clear that I was going to do it again.”

Last week the 27-year-old pitched five scoreless innings and threw five strikeouts against the San Diego Padres.

Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black said of Feltner’s recovery: “To have him come back after, after his type of injury was was uplifting for us. His dedication, you know, his, his devotion to being a good pitcher, and his work ethic will lead him to good things.”

Now, Feltner wears a protective shield under his hat when he plays that’s made from the same type of material used to protect hitters’ elbows and shins.

“It doesn’t bother me too much, so I would encourage other people to look into it as well,” he said.

He’s also felt grateful for the outpouring of support from friends and fans and has a fresh perspective on life outside baseball.

“You’re gonna win some games and you’re gonna lose some games,” he said. “So there’s no reason stressing over it and there’s a lot more to life, there’s a bigger picture to it. You know, when you come back close to not being able to play again, it switches things up for you. I’m just grateful for every day.”

(NEW YORK) — Golf legend Tiger Woods was back on the green this weekend, but instead of starring in the action, the father of two was serving as the caddy for his son Charlie, who was competing in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship Last Chance Florida Regional, held at the Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Charlie, 14, emerged as the winner of the regional qualifier in the boys 14-15 age division with final scores of 71 and 66, and will move on to the upcoming national championship in Louisiana.

In a post-competition interview, Charlie said it was “great” having his dad right alongside him on the course.

“We just stay in our own little world and we just take it one shot at a time,” he told tournament host Ryan Burr.

“He puts me in my place,” he added.

The elder Woods has caddied for his son in the past and has previously said he doesn’t formally coach Charlie in golf in order to minimize any pressure his son might feel.

Who are Tiger Woods’ children?

Charlie has been following his father’s footsteps into competitive golf since he was a young boy.

The father-son duo have also competed together at multiple PNC Championships, most recently in December 2022.

Woods also has a daughter, Sam Alexis Woods, who is now 16.

Sam honored her father by introducing him when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame last March, calling him a “fighter.”

“You’ve defied the odds every time,” she said in part at the time.

Woods shares both Sam and Charlie with ex Elin Nordegren.

Two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart talks inspiration from tennis star Coco Gauff, amplifying women’s sports

(NEW YORK) — New York Liberty star and two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart has had a stellar season, leading her team to the playoffs, and hailed this moment in sports as bigger than basketball and a catalyst for all women’s sports during an interview Wednesday morning.

Stewart joined Good Morning America on Wednesday after the Liberty came back to defeat the Connecticut Sun Tuesday evening, after being down at the half in Game 2 of the WNBA semifinals.

“The energy in Barclays has been just electric all season long and we knew that they were behind us the entire time,” she said. “We obviously went down Game 1 and knew we had to take care of business in Game 2.”

For her eighth year in the league, after a successful seven in Seattle, Stewart is back in her home state and has led the Liberty to the No. 2 seed this season, also becoming the first player in team history to win the league MVP, an honor with which she was awarded Tuesday night.

“Hearing all of that and being the first Liberty player to win MVP is an amazing honor and I’m lucky to be the first,” Stewart said, adding that the season gave her “goose bumps.”

“It’s one of the founding franchises here and [we’re] continuing to put the Liberty on the map and chase a championship, because they’ve never won one and that’s our goal,” she continued. “We want to get to that point where we can have the whole city behind us and celebrate women’s basketball and the WNBA in a different way than it has before.”

Remarking on the tight race for this year’s MVP title against Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson and Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas, Stewart explained that she thinks “it says how incredible this league is and how amazing all of these women basketball players are.”

“They’ve had dominant seasons,” she said. “The fact that three of us can really try to uplift this league together and continue to be great, women’s sports are going places. We’ve known that for a long time, but now everybody else is seeing it. And we’re continuing to raise the bar.”

Stewart stunned Liberty and women’s basketball fans when she started the season off by setting a league record with 45 points in 30 minutes. She also notched three games with 40 points and 10 rebounds, and averaged a career high 23 points.

“Life has changed a lot from 2018 to 2023,” Stewart said of her progression and upward trajectory on the court over the past several years, citing support from “family” including “my wife Marta [and] my daughter Ruby.”

As for what the future holds, the former University of Connecticut Husky said she hopes to “[continue] to be great no matter what happens, no matter where I am, making sure that I show everyone how it is to be great and bring greatness around me.”

Stewart said she has held onto wise words from competitors in other arenas to motivate her in her game, most recently taking wisdom from 19-year-old tennis star Coco Gauff, who took home the U.S. Open women’s title for the first time earlier this month.

“The fact that people thought they were pouring water on her fire, but they were pouring gas … that’s what I felt,” Stewart said, referencing Gauff’s comments after her win (“To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it”).

“It’s an amazing time for women’s sports,” she added. “We’re in a spot where we want to have positive support and with that comes negative … not everybody is going to be on my side, but I’m still going to shine bright.”
